When Mary Lee Thomas’s husband dies, she learns that to keep their farm, she must marry her husband’s brother, her former love, Sheriff Wade Thomas, or the farm will be sold. She’s still attracted to him, yet feels Wade wants her now only as a way to keep his home place. By trial and failure, she realizes she has no choice but to marry him if she and her son are to have a place to live. When he returns from a trip for the Sheriff’s Office, she can’t wait to tell him she’s with child. Instead of being elated, Wade swears the child can’t be his. As a child, he’d overheard the doctor say he couldn’t sire children. He was widowed, but never had any children. That proves his point. Though she loves Wade, unable to convince him, Mary Lee decides that even if the farm sells, she can no longer live with his distrust. Wade is sure she’s broken her vows to him again, but will he discover the truth in time to save his marriage and live happily ever after with the woman he’s loved all his life?
