Janet Sumner Johnson lives in Utah with her husband and three kids. She bakes a mean cinnamon twist and eats way more cookies than are good for her, which explains her running habit. This was a really fun story.
I loved how the author pulled characters from traditional bedtime stories into this book.
The illustrations were cute, but felt like they could have been more?
I can't even say what was missing for me in the illustrations.

The addition of some applicants resumes at the end was really fun.
I think that was one of my favourite parts.
Thank you NetGalley and Capstone for my DRC.

Shailey loves reading bedtime stories with her father but since he started his new job he’s been too busy. Shailey’s solution? Fire her father and advertise for a new bedtime storyteller.
description
A host of fairytale characters apply for the job but none of them are quite right. Shailey begins to wonder if she’ll ever be able to find a suitable replacement for her father.

Some of my fondest childhood memories include trips to my local library to find new treasures. I always love books about books! I appreciated the inclusion of fairytale characters as it was a reminder that books are always there for you, even when you feel like you’re alone.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Capstone Editions for the opportunity to read this book.

As the author, I'm hugely biased as to my rating. But this book idea grabbed me from the second it sparked. First draft was written within the hour (which NEVER happens for me), and I confess, I still giggle every time I read it. I love Shailey so much and her bold choices to stand up for herself and her needs. Still, I have all the sympathy for her dad. All of it.

I hope you'll enjoy reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it (and now reading it)!

Help Wanted, Must Love Books is an absolutely cute, little picture book that will make your heart sing!

If it's not obvious, I love reading! So, when a book like this comes around I get super excited. What is more exciting than a book about loving books?! This sort of book (wow, I'm saying book a lot) would have been one of my favourites as a child. If only there had been a few more of these gems around when I was little!

Shailey is a little girl who loves to read. Her Dad and her read together, but one day he gets a job that makes him too tired to read to her (which is quite frustrating for our little friend). Once she has enough, she fires her Father as her reading buddy and puts out a job posting for a new one! So many people and animals show up for the job, and thus the hunt began! Help was wanted and they must love books (doesn't the title work so well here?).

My positive notes:

1. I absolutely love the cover. The colours are fantastic, the cartoon-y vibe is delightful and I love the detail (butterflies, books, bears... so many b's!). It grabs your attention but doesn't divert you from the story.

2. Shailey is relatable - at least to me! I could see many kids relating and enjoying seeing someone who acts (or looks!) like them. To top it off, the storyline she follows is also relatable (a parent who's new job makes them too busy... yep, check out those relatable boxes!).

3. I like that this story took a creative leap with the different characters who show up for the job interview. I wasn't expecting this book to be super serious, so seeing the array of characters had me chuckling. This would be a great way to get kids talking about prior fairy tales they read! On this note, parents and some older kids may appreciate it more than little kids. Some of our younger reader friends might not be able to remember all of the fun fairy tales they've seen before.

4. The ending was super sweet! Devices OFF during family time, folks!

I can honestly say I don't have any negatives for this book. I think this is a very sweet and very creative book. I would love to see more books like this floating around.

Five out of five stars!

Thank you to NetGalley and Capstone for providing me with a free copy of this book.

5 stars.

Ohh my stars this was EXCELLENT! It literally had a lot of what I love in a book. It was about Books which, let's face it, is good enough for me right there and doesn't need anything else to accompany it. But it did have more. It was about fairytales and it was surprisingly funny! I giggled at a few of the pages. It really is quite an adorable book.

It's about a girl named, Shailey. Shailey loves bedtime because that is her special time with her dad to get lost in her fairytale stories. But then her dad is unable to keep doing that with her because he gets a new job that makes him far too busy at that time of the day to sit down and cuddle up and read. So Shailey puts up an advertisement for a new storyteller which kinda doesn't go as she planned.

This story is sure to make bedtime reading fun. It's a book that is mainly aimed for 4-7 year olds but I reckon that age range can be a lot wider, as even as an adult, I found this to be really entertaining and lovely to look at.

I can't not mention the illustrations. Courtney Dawson is an amazing illustrator. The use of colours along with the style of the artwork just fit perfectly. This soft kind of art is my favourite for picture books because it has such a gentleness to it that would easily appeal to my younger self. Actually it appeals to my adult self too. The cover design just looks amazing and that is what caught my eye first with this book then it was the title which is so spot on and perfect.

I can't wait until this is released because it's one that I want to purchase to add to my collection. Definitely highly recommended.

My Thoughts
Shailey is in immediate need of a bedtime story reader! She fired her previous one as he was failing to do his duties well (and if you must know, it was dad!)

And now, she is all set to interview anyone and everyone who wants the job. It is certainly an exciting few days of interviewing for Shailey as the applicants range from the gingerbread man to various fairy tale princesses to Captain Hook. She keeps making updates to the requirements based on each applicant, until she was not sure she could ever find another bedtime-story-reader at all ever again!

And then, the story takes the sweetest turn……

The illustrations are colorful and cute. And I totally enjoyed the resumes of some of the applicants included at the end of the book (I saw myself in some of them!)

In Conclusion
I love that this book subtly lets adults know we need to take time away from the busyness that life tends to bring, and spend focused time with our loved ones; and shows children that they can work towards finding solutions for themselves when problems arise.

So yes, read it with your little loved ones for it is indeed a sweet sweet read about the love of reading and books and family!

Disclaimer: Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for the digital review copy of the featured book. These thoughts are my honest opinions of the book.

Shailey loves bedtime and her special routine of reading books with her dad. Unfortunately, dad is busy these days with a new job that keeps him on the phone and computer a lot so she has no choice but to fire him as her bedtime storyteller.

When Shailey places a help wanted ad, she is surprised by the quirky fairy tale applicants who arrive for an interview. She has some strict requirements that no one seems to meet and between Sleeping Beauty falling asleep on the job and the Gingerbread Man stealing her books, it seems Shailey may never find a suitable replacement for her dad. Can father and daughter work together to continue a solid bedtime routine?

This is such a cute story for both young readers and adults thanks to the familiar characters. The illustrations are excellent and will hold the attention of emerging readers, the sentences are simple and easy to follow for young readers. I appreciate that this story shows the importance of sharing time and developing a routine with children to nurture a love of reading.

Thanks to Capstone and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

The premise of this book is pretty cute. However, it's also one of those that seems to be directing winks at the parents, and that becomes problematic on one particular page when it assumes that its audience is more mature and educated than it actually is.

Shailey and her dad read a bedtime story every night. But when her dad gets a new job, he's suddenly too busy to read anymore. So Shailey fires him and puts out an ad for a new bedtime story reader. She gets plenty of applicants, but there's something wrong with all of them. Goldilocks is obsessed with the comfort of the seating. Sleeping Beauty can't stay awake. The Three Little Pigs get frightened off by the Big Bad Wolf before they even have a chance to interview. It isn't until a somewhat familiar face shows up and applies for the job that Shailey finds the perfect candidate.

I don't have much of a problem with all that. The résumés at the back are cute, too (even if much of what's in them will go over readers' heads). But there's one candidate that just didn't work. Or, I should say, Shailey's reaction didn't work. The candidate is a giant. A very human-looking giant who just happens to be very large. But rather than using the opportunity to make a statement about differences not being inherently negative, the book shows Shailey being afraid, and subsequently changing her ad to read: "Human applicants only." Now, I understand that giants are often viewed as fictional creatures, but this particular giant looked pretty real. He was simply very large. When I read Shailey's revised ad, I cringed, because it seems to endorse being afraid of differences and also discriminating based on size... as well as implying that giants aren't human. Because there are very real medical conditions that can cause people to grow unusually large, this book has the potential to fuel bigotry, and potentially even bullying. I'd hate to see kids read this and then turn around and taunt their larger peers with: "Not human!"

So I can't wholeheartedly endorse this one. Perhaps Shailey's problem with the giant applicant could've been a more practical one (e.g., "Must be able to fit in our rocking chair.") or the candidate could've been changed altogether. As it is, though, I feel uncomfortable with a book that promotes discrimination based on size, going so far as to imply someone is not human because of it. The illustrations are cute, otherwise, and the resolution to the story makes perfect sense. Maybe with a bit of tweaking, this book could avoid a potentially problematic issue and be a cute fairy tale-based read.

Thank you to NetGalley and Capstone for providing a digital ARC.

A little girl who LOVES bedtime stories needs a new storyteller when her dad works so hard he just falls asleep early on in the evening or when he is too hard at work. Instead of wallowing she fires her dad (yes, really) and then starts hunting for new people to tell stories to her. I just loved her posting a poster to find a new storyteller and then adding more and more to it as the day grew long (seeing the additions to the poster were tons of fun especially since the girl kept it colourful).

I have to say I didn’t expect the applicants to be THAT or be about THAT. So that was a fun surprise, I won’t spoil anything as I want people to be surprised as well. I enjoyed seeing what kind of people who apply and what kind of skills they had. Not to mention, I wanted to know if the little girl would find someone to tell her stories at bedtime.

The ending was just the sweetest, that was the best applicant, but yeah, there needs to be some conditions for it to work out. 😛

Oh, and the CVs from the ones who applied in the book were just a wonderful addition, really glad the author added those to the book. I had quite a laugh reading those.

I love the art it was just the cutest!

All in all, a very sweet bedtime story that I am sure will be loved by parents and children. Recommended!

Shailey loves bedtime and especially loves reading bedtime stories with her father. Unfortunately, dad is busy these days with a new job that keeps him on the phone and computer a lot so she has to find a new bedtime storyteller. When Shailey places a help wanted ad, she is surprised by the fairy tale applicants who arrive for an interview. She has some requirements but each of the applicants has a problem, Sleeping Beauty falls asleep on the job, the Gingerbread Man steals her books, and Snow White brings all the dwarves with her. Will she ever find someone to replace her dad in the bedtime story ritual?

This is a cute story for both young readers and adults thanks to the familiar characters. The illustrations are well done and I enjoyed the pages with her help wanted ad on them. My son reads every night to his children, so this book was a fun fit for us. My granddaughter thought it was funny and my grandson loved the fairytale characters that applied. We tried to guess what they would do before the book told us. I really liked that this story shows the importance of sharing time and developing a routine with children to nurture a love of reading. A great book for any family library. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book upon request. The rating, ideas and opinions shared are my own.

Disclaimer: ARC via Netgalley

This is a wonderful book. Shailey loves bedtime because it was when her father reads to her, but his new job interferes so she needs to find a new reader.

It’s great that Shailey and her father are people of color. The fact that the father could be a single parent is important as well. It’s wonderful that while the job is never detailed, the father is involved in something that requires books and electronics. With just these details the story does much in the way of representation.

When Shailey interviews various replacement readers, Johnson and Dawson get clever. The people interviewed are those from fairy tales (which appear to be Shailey’s favorite book), and they are diverse. Snow White is the traditional looking Snow White, the dwarves are mixed in terms of skin color and gender. Sleeping Beauty is a person of color as is Hook. The three little pigs are still pigs, but one is girl. It is a nice variety.

The use of the fairy tales allows Johnson and Dawson to get creative. The way each character applies fits the source story, and Shailey’s increasing response to the applicants – she keeps redrafting her help wanted sign – show the power of words and meaning.

It’s a wonderful book.

I loved the story it is so cute. The illustrations and cover is beautiful. Shailey loves her bedtime, as her dad tells her stories. When her dad gets bust with a new job, Shailey is looking for another person to fill the position I loved that fairytale characters came to apply for the job.

What an adorable book! I loved how classic fairy tale characters were woven into this book.
Such a cute tale about a little girl whos father is the nest at reading and sharing bedtime stories with her until he gets a new job which leaves him too busy or too tired to share these books with her at bedtime anymore, so the girl sacks him and starts looking for a replacement.
We 3njoyed every page of this book and the job applications at the back were very funny too.

This picture book is super adorable! It takes a playful look at an over-worked parent and a spunky girl who is taking matters into her own hands when Dad doesn’t have time to read bedtime stories anymore. The cast of fairy tale characters is just perfect—except none of them are perfect for the job of bedtime storyteller. Shailey knows what she wants and she won’t stop until she gets it. I love this determined little girl and was rooting for her to get the happy ending she deserves! The art is fun and vibrant and the character’s profiles at the end of the story continue the fun. Super clever!

Reading bedtime stories is Shailey's favorite part of her nightly routine with her Dad and he is really good at cozying up with her in the rocker to share some of their favorite reads but lately, now that Dad has a new job, he's a bit too busy or just too tired. Shailey gets creative and hangs a "Help Wanted" sign that attracts the attention of a cast of characters that are eager to fill the position. She interviews The Three Little Pigs, Snow White, and the like, but no one measures up until one special applicant arrives.

Help Wanted, Must Love Books is more than a fun read. It's a reminder to make time for what's important. A time to unplug, to set aside our to-do lists, and spend some quality time together as a family doing what you love most. I've already got this book on my book order for my students to enjoy. It is recommended for ages 4-7 and would make a great bedtime story.

Shailey wants her dad to read to her, but he is so busy with work, that he can't do it.

So, she tries to interview new poeple to take his case. But each applicant it not quite right, from Cinderella to Sleeping beauty.

She also keeps revising the ad to attract those where anyway.

It is a cute book, but doesn't explain how her dad is able tot come back, so easily.

I am in LOVE! This is my new favorite book and want to gift it to everyone I know! I immediately connected with the main character who loved her pajamas and reading books until her eyelids closed, but then she started looking for a bedtime storyteller and the book just opened up on a whole new level. Every page had me giggling and completely understanding where Shailley was coming from. The end pages with the personal statements of some of the applicants was just hilarious. This should be on immediate preorder for everyone!

I received at e-ARC of this book and I’m ordering one for my children ASAP. This book is hilarious, yet also brilliantly shows the importance of reading books to your children and how much they cherish that. It’s real because as parents we sometimes get overwhelmed and busy and might brush off reading to our children or cutting it short. The main character misses her dad’s Storytimes and gets some interesting applicants. Will she find the perfect one? I love this picture book and I know children will love it to. A perfect bed time story!

This did not affect my opinion.
For the Magical Readathon I had to read a picture book and I'm so glad that I found this one.
The art was really beautiful and I loved that it was about a diverse family, especially because it's a children's book.
Help Wanted, Must Love Books conveys a lot of norms and values such as diversity and family love.
I also loved that there were characters involved from fairy tales. I think children will love that.
I couldn't give this book less than 5 stars and I really recommend it.

An adorable book about a little girl who loves reading books as part of her bedtime routine. When her Daddy falls down on his book reading responsibilities, Shailey 'fires' him and starts interviews to fill the position. Lots of iconic book characters try to get the job, like Pinoccio, Cinderella, Alice, the Sleeping Beauty, the Giant, but they all fail miserably! The best applicant for this role is, of course, Daddy, but he must agree that work related stuff are off limits during bedtime stories.

This is a very cute story! The illustrations are amazing.
The protagonist was great. She had a lot of endearing traits that showed a girl can be both sensitive and strong.
I think children will get a lot of joy identifying the job appilcant characters, offering a great mix of analysis and creativity.

I had a chance to review an e-ARC of this story and I could not have been more charmed. So many kids can relate to the idea of a parent who's distracted by work and/or technology. I absolutely love the gumption of this girl as she interviews other bedtime story readers -- familiar faces for many young readers. Clever, charming, and heartwarming. And of course, perfect for book lovers.

This book is so fun! The title is perfect and the illustrations are beautiful and well-done. The story is about bedtime storytelling--something kids, parents, and other caregivers can relate to. It's clever (look for clues in the illustrations!), sweet (especially the resolution), and funny (don't forget the job applications at the end!). My kids and I ADORED it!
