After Edgewater

Rate this book
Cleveland, 2006. Cooper Madison has rediscovered his passion for life, both on and off the field. After a tragic loss prompted him to walk away from professional baseball at the peak of his game, his chance encounter with college senior Cara Knox sparked an awakening in the soul that he had forsaken for the better part of a year. Cara, pragmatic by nature, has found in her relationship with Coop that true love is not always meant to be practical. Detective Jason Knox, Cara's oldest brother, has just made national headlines for his work on the Edgewater Park Killer case. When another body is discovered along the shores of Lake Erie, he and Commander Mick McCarthy must face the possibility that the EPK is still at large, despite Chief Horace Johnston's insistence that the case is closed. In this follow-up to Before We Ever Spoke, the bestselling novel by author Dan Largent, lingering questions will be answered and new ones will be raised as Coop and Cara's young relationship is put to the test.

After Edgewater is a work of romance, suspense and interpersonal drama penned by author Dan Largent. Written for readers of all sensibilities due to its clean and non-explicit approach, this charming and dramatic romance novel touches on other popular genres such as sports romance and murder mystery. It is the follow up to Before We Ever Spoke, and we continue to observe the relationship of Cooper Madison and Cara Knox as a new tragic discovery puts it to the test. Cara’s brother Jason reluctantly has to admit that the Edgewater Park Killer may still be at large, adding a new element of danger to the Lake Erie area and its residents.

One of the best things about this well written novel is the cross-genre appeal, and the fullness of the story to appeal to its readership on so many different levels. Fans of murder mysteries will obtain all the suspense that they need from Jason’s investigation and the eerie shores of Erie, with lots of procedural fun and clues for the crime genre fans too. The emotional content is deeply developed and given plenty of time to showcase, which allows romance fans to get their fill of the realistic interplay between Coop and Cara, who find themselves right in the midst of the mystery. Atmospheric description and well-played exposition-style dialogue keep the plot moving along and readers hanging on their seats with it, and overall this makes After Edgewater a highly recommended read for fans seeking a mutli-layered plot and high quality writing.

After loving Largent’s first book, “Before We Ever Spoke”, I was pleasantly surprised that I was even more captivated by “After Edgewater”! This sequel continues with the great love story of Cooper and Cara while entwining the horrifying yet fascinating hunt for the Edgewater Park Killer. The witty banter between lead detectives, Jason and Mick, provided much needed comic relief as I was on the edge of my seat throughout the crime narrative. Largent also added in new characters including my personal favorite, the tenacious young news reporter, Hannah LaMarca. The relatable, vulnerable, and humorous dialogue from the well-illustrated characters make you feel like you are a part of the action. The various settings described in each chapter make you proud to be a Clevelander or make you wish that you were one. Five stars for “After Edgewater”!

This is Dan’s second book. I enjoyed both books-though I think I liked this one a little better. The characters are well written-though we met them in his first book he gave them more depth in the second book especially they ones we were briefly introduced to them in the first book. Dan’s writing has gotten stronger with the second book and I look forward to his future writings.

Great book, but...

The only complaint i have with both books in this series is the language. The stories were wonderful, but taking the Lords name in vain is offensive. The books would be just as good, even better without using those words.

Largent’s anticipated sophomore novel picked up where Before We Ever Spoke left off with the stories of Coop & Cara’s whirlwind romance and the Cleveland Police & EPK’s potential ongoing battle. Slipping back into the story was effortless and the novel delivered more vivid descriptions of local haunts any Clevelander will know. So much attention to detail was paid in setting the scene and continuing the intriguing storylines, however, that much of the dialogue not belonging to the two main characters felt forced and unnatural. There are zero complaints to be made about how the story progresses and the interesting new twists Largent incorporates. Leaving After Edgewater we know so much more, yet still have more more to potentially learn; dare I wonder if another book could come down the pipeline? Both Before We Ever Spoke and After Edgewater are worth the read!

Well done Dan. Nice mystery and plot. I liked that you incorporated all your kids name in the book. Great twisting plot. I am thinking the series can continue.

This book is a good summer read on the beach. Love the characters and plot twists. I hope you continue the series.

I was drawn to this book by its cover (I admit it), yet "After Edgewater" and its prequel "Before we even Spoke" are the two best books I've read so far in 2022.

Developing the characters and themes he began in "Before we even Spoke," Largent continues his homage to Cleveland in "After Edgewater." You've got to love a book where the characters meet for breakfast at The Place to Be in Lakewood, Ohio!

But Largent also does an amazing job exploring all kinds of loss. What do you do when you meet the person of your dreams and you realize that one day they'll know you are not perfect? How do you deal with the loss of a child? Of health? Of a marriage? How far would you/should you go to prove your love? Largent explores these questions and more.

First off, I’d like to start by saying it was so easy to step back into this story. It had been a while since I read the first book ‘Before We Ever Spoke’. It had been so long and I had read so many books in between but it felt like I had read the first book the day before. This book is a page turner, a fast and easy read. All the characters are very realistic, well rounded and down to earth, which made me want to continue reading just to know what was going on with them. Great world building, I can still see some scenes in my head when I think about certain times in the story. I love when you get into a story that much.
You follow the continuation of Coop and Cara, but you also get to see the story of Jason and Mick trying to find the EPK killer. So many things are explained, including the reasons in which the EPK killer started killing. I found myself three quarters into the book cheering for the EPK killer. There was a big surprise towards the end, that I did not see coming. I enjoy it when you get taken back by something that happens in a book, that was definitely refreshing to be surprised. The different stories seemed to have an equal amount of time so you weren’t wondering what was going on with the other while reading, it bounced back and forth very nicely.
Coop and Cara are a beautiful couple and you see that more in this story, this book was an awesome continuation of their love story. The Epilogue is what I was hoping for. I really enjoy Dan’s writing, great world building, amazing characters, interesting and entertaining plots. I look forward to reading more from him.
