Beyonce: Queen of the Spotlight by Ebony Joy Wilkins, 144 pages. NON-FICTION, BIOGRAPHY. Random House, 2020. $8.

Content: G

BUYING ADVISORY: MS - OPTIONAL

AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE

Ever since she was born, Beyonce has been singing and dancing. She doesn’t let insults, mistakes, or depression hold her back from her dreams. Through hard work, Beyonce has become an award-winning singer-songwriter, a loving sister and aunt, an actress, an advocate for what she believes, and a mother.

Wilkins does a good job simplifying the events in Beyonce’s life that has led to where she is now. I enjoyed the quick, short experiences that talk about her, and the fast pace will help keep the attention of young readers, too. The non-fiction narrative was dry at times, but I like how Wilkins gives readers lists, pictures, and explanations of music business lingo and important people in Beyonce’s life throughout the book.

Part of the Trailblazers series devoted to individuals who have changed the world in significant ways, this biography focuses on Beyonce, the talented singer, dancer, and actress. Clearly, the author is a fan of Beyonce as she covers her formative years, her various musical partnerships, and her chart-topping songs and videos. She also touches lightly on the price of fame and some of the issues between her father, who was her manager for a long time, and other members of Destiny's Child. Readers may be surprised to find that the woman who has so much stage presence was once considered shy by her classmates and her group didn't win the prize when they appeared on Star Search. I like the writing a lot more than the illustrations, which didn't really capture my imagination or attention or do justice to Bey. Classroom and school libraries would be wise to add this to their collection since it will be almost as popular as its subject.
