Moonlight Beach: Murder and Magic

Rate this book
Moonlight Beach, adjoining the exclusive, opulent hamlet of Rancho California is a sleepy conclave in Southern California where median home prices top $5,000,000 and yearly incomes…well if you can afford a home there, then your income is commensurate. What has been shattering this sunny, sheltered little world? Death. Bodies washed up on Moonlight Beach. Grisly mutilations. Could it be sharks - hungry, hunting, doing what they do best? But, maybe it’s something else: something sinister, dangerous, perhaps even supernatural? Then there’s the cynical, greedy, local Venture Capitalists looking to start a company supplying organs to those with the need and the money; could they be responsible? Could their greed reach so far into such unimaginable violence?
And how about the nearby coven of witches who often explore their own bizarre rituals and dark magic, could they be involved? As victims or willing participants?
On a recent night, two more people are murdered on a cliff overlooking the beach – their organs are missing. Serial killer? Greed? Black magic?

In this modern mystery, a serial killer is preying on young women in the small beach community of Rancho, California.  After the latest body is found on Moonlight Beach with the heart cut out, the police are desperate to find the killer before there are more victims.
During the Spring full moon in Rancho, a coven of four women hold a ceremony and call upon a Native American spirit to harness its powerful magic for positive purposes.  While conducting the ceremony, the spirit of a Native American witch from a hundred years ago enters the body of Anne who is part of the coven. The spirit's name is Katomi and she speaks through Anne and asks the coven to protect her from a shape shifting Snake-man.  As the women receive more power from the spirit of Katomi, they begin to suspect that the Snake-man is a resident of Rancho named Roy who lives near Moonlight Beach.
A member of the coven named Diane who is an Astrologist reads the charts of Anne and her best friend Susan.  Diane sees that there is a tragic event for them in the near future.  The coven uses their white magic to protect Anne from Roy as the mysteries of the murders at Moonlight Beach are unraveled.
The story is told from many different perspectives which makes Kiri's wtiting very interesting.  The different characters in the story overlap through their interactions and motives.  This is a good introduction to the Moonlight series for fans of mystery.

Love it! Couldn’t put it down. The book opens with a stalker on the beach and ends... well, I won’t say but you have to read it! In between frenzied murders are a coven of amateur witches, an astrologer, several venture capitalists, organ donors, doctors, zoo keepers, the cops and some very evil bad guys. Looking forward to the next one in the series.

Moonlight beach: Murder and Magic by Yurie Kiri is book that I can promise you is going to keep you turning the page when you pick it up. You will not be able to put it down. Is it black magic or the ultra-curiosity that is given from the way the author describes coming about the story that draws one in? I am not sure and I will let you be the judge. I am going to try and give this awesome book the review it deserves without giving away too much of the story line as any thing could possibly be a hint to you about how the story goes. The book twists and turns and will not lead where you think it is going to lead at any given moment. Things are happening, but are they a string of brutal events due to some sick killer on the lose who just likes killing? Or is there something else going on entirely? Some dark and something dangerous? Does it have something to do with someone who has a score to settle with things that someone of the typical human experience could even put into words? What hooked me immediately was the mix of genre’s that are involved here. The book is a melting pot of the paranormal as well as modern day crime and with the story that the author tells about the way that she came across the story, the book is just that much more real as one reads it. Even if you aren’t so much into the paranormal, the other aspects of the books are going to pull you in before you even realize what is happening. To the author, what a brilliant job! I have no complaints whatsoever! This book could easily be turned into a movie or TV series and I am hoping to see it someday!

This story opens up with a murder and the detective is having a difficult time finding who did it. Alongside this murder story is a story about a few women and men who are into doing special drugs and calling on spiritual beings. The two stories eventually converge with all the pieces coming together cohesively.

What intrigued me most about this story was the fantasy aspect of it. Even though I don’t often read murder mysteries, I’ve often enjoyed them. This one was no doubt a great murder mystery. I also found humor in the writing which I enjoyed as well. Adding the fantasy element to it was like the cherry on top. I personally have never read anything like this, or if I did, it must have been ages go. I love fantasy and this one didn’t disappoint.

Overall, this book was well written with strong characters and a pretty good plot. I think a little more focus/depth on just a couple of characters would also make the story even better. The pacing was on-point for this genre. There were things about this story that I felt was not believable, like the doctor simply accepting the lung donation from the father of the child needing it. I had to really think about that. I have no idea how organ donation is done in real life (the actual process), but I have the feeling it’s probably a little more complex than showing up to the doctor with an organ. But you know, I did enjoy the idea of just being able to do that. The overall theme and conflict were nicely done. This is definitely a fun read and would be well worth your time.

Enjoyed this story!

Yurie Kiri writes a thrilling paranormal tale with Moonlight Beach Murder and Magic. I haven't read anything by this author before, and what a hidden gem. I enjoyed it so much, that I have now followed the author and look for more books to read. This book in in print and on audiobook, and I have read the print, and listened to the audiobook, enjoying both, and writing a review for each one. The reader is introduced to Moonlight Beach, and the residents that are close by and are the ones that can afford the view. How terrible for them, that bodies are starting to wash up on shore. This is a grandly told paranormal thriller that brings in the possible, with what may or may not be possible, and those all add up to deaths, gory and terrifying deaths. So many theories as to what happened, and why it is happening, rather than how to stop it from happening, if that is even an option. he author weaves a tangled web of story, and captures the reader. Absolutely chilling, with death around every corner. This author is a great storyteller. The reader just embarks on a superb journey. It's a look over your shoulder book, because you never know who or what is going to appear next. Moonlight Beach Murder and Magic is a definite recommendation by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews. I read this book to give my unbiased and honest review. Amy's Bookshelf Reviews recommends that anyone who reads this book, to also write a review.

Moonlight Beach: Murder and Magic by Yurie Kiri is a story of murder, dark magic and greed set in the uber rich Southern California town of Rancho California. First bodies are washed up on the beach and found in the surrounding cliffs, beaten, broken, and eventually missing body parts. It is a super-natural tale that entwines an ancient feud between the snake and the female spirit of Katomi. During full moon ceremonies, both spirits are called upon and inhabit the respective humans that summoned them. The war is on! Then throw in the greedy venture capitalists who start up an organ harvesting business, and you have a wicked tale that leaves the police guessing. Kiri is very graphic in all details of this book - from the grisly murders and ensuing murder scenes to the detailed rituals to summon the supernatural. This is not a book for younger readers! It is, however, quirky, and entertaining. You never know what to expect from page to page. The downside I see is there is not much character development – you do not really know how the characters got to where they are in this story. If the foreword by the author is true, it is an amazing tale based on an overheard conversation in a bar. But it is an entertaining read that has a fitting end. It will be interesting to see how the next installment develops.

Right from the very first pages of the author's note to the reader, Kiri grabs your attention with both hands and forces you into the scene- as if you were sharing the memories together. And it's done in such a way that the reader doesn't even realize that they, too, are now leaning in just a little bit more, trying to hear the muddled voices of an interesting tale from an adjacent table. And how the creation of this novel was introduced... I thought it so well done (engrossing almost) to a point that I had to self reflect on just how big of a nosey neighbor I might have been in that same scenario!

Future reader reading this review: Without droning on, all I will say is that the story only gets better, and is absolutely worth the read! I'll never be the one to turn down a hot and racy read and I appreciate it being a book set too, knowing that there's more of this delicious story to digest. The story line is imaginative and binge worthy. It is a bit erotic and a little violent, so as the author states, this is truly for adult enjoyment only. I'm already looking forward to the second book!

The book is the first in the Moonlight Trilogy.

Well, what can I say, the most exciting thing I have ever encountered in a Mexican restaurant is a taco! Although, the idea for my first novel, Woken, did come to me while I was eating in a Thai restaurant.

Anyway, as a crime novel super fan and a writer who has used magical elements this threatened to be somewhat of a treat.

It has everything from serial killers, organs being stolen, ghosts (maybe) and, of course, many twists in the plot. Is it too much for one novel? Some might say yes, there is a lot to take in.

However, it is worth it for the amazing ending, which, of course, I will give you no hint of.

In conclusion, would I recommend it? Yes, give it a go and see what you think.

In a high-priced, affluent beach town...money and magic are leading to murder.

First note: if you haven't guessed, this is a mature tale. The scene opens with introductions to a number of individuals who's pockets bulge so much that they believe they can buy their own rules. Cheating and one-night stands are the norm, but even the rich have their problems.

Add in a coven of witches practicing erotic magic, who end up running afoul of a vengeful Native American shaman. As bodies begin appearing on the beach, the law is always a step behind due to the confusing details of each case.

This story didn't settle for just one climax scene, and it threw some interesting twists. Well-thought out and intriguing.

Enjoyable read! Moonlight Beach weaves together magic, murder, and mystery! For both lovers of fantasy or murder mystery, this would be a great read.
The story starts out with a basic murder mystery of victims being washed up on the beach. But this isn’t your typical whodunit!
I really enjoyed the story telling and diving into the lore of the setting, Rancho, California. There are many characters the author introduces you to, including strong women, and shady businessmen, not to mention spirits!
There is a clear message of sisterhood and female strength and power. The characters are relatable, and the only thing I would have loved to see is more depth into these beautiful characters, as well as more diversity of their own unique personalities. Overall, a very entertaining read.

Supernatural, Indigenous People Folklore, and Mystery
From the first page when body parts wash ashore, to the final page, this book has action sequences in spades. The swanky town of Rancho, California has multiple options to answer the mystery of who is killing the town’s inhabitants. The real answer is both strange and intoxicating in this book. Yurie Kiri can create an action-packed story that will take readers to very unexpected places. I enjoyed this book very much; it had a bit of everything—sex, mystery, suspense, action, and friendship. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for an exciting escapable read!

Enjoyed it!

This story starts with a challenging murder investigation that intertwines with a subplot about a group dabbling in special drugs and spiritual rituals. The two narratives merge seamlessly, creating a cohesive and engaging plot.

The fantasy element adds a unique twist to the murder mystery, making it an enjoyable and distinctive read. While the characters are strong and the pacing is spot-on, the story could benefit from more depth in a few characters.

Some plot points, like the simplistic organ donation process, may seem unrealistic, but overall, it's a well-written, fun read with humor and solid themes.

Wow, this book was exhilarating. Every part of the plot felt unexpected to me, which made it really fun to read. I couldn’t anticipate where the plot was going but it felt so real, and I eventually started to put it together! If you like paranormal or mystery, this is a great book to pick up! It was so different from any book I’ve read before. The mystical elements and the plot twists made this book memorable. I am so glad I picked it up that I’ll likely read it again and would love to read more from this author! Thank you!

Ok. So I have to say I really liked this book with something going on right up to an ending I certainly didn’t see coming. Slightly different as well with a little bit of spice thrown in. I am now wondering if there is going to be a book two, cos there has to be storylines like this just begging to be written. First one I have read by this author and It will definitely not be the last. Highly recommended.

Sapphic Mayfair Witches

The blurb.
'Grisly death. Bodies washing up on nearby Moonlight Beach. It’s downright disconcerting to the privileged one percent living in their gated communities.'

What the hell was this?! Witches pleasuring each other under a full moon while trying to summon a succubus or some nonsense like that. Teenage wet dreams.
Unreadable garbage!
Once again shame on all the 5 star reviews. They must have been seduced by a succubus and in return gave a glowing review.

The peaceful and affluent community of Moonlight Beach is shattered by a series of gruesome murders, with bodies washing up on the beach and organs missing. As the investigation unfolds, a complex web of suspects and motives emerges, including cynical venture capitalists, a coven of witches, and a potential serial killer. As the body count rises, the truth behind the murders becomes increasingly sinister and disturbing.

I received a free copy of this book for my honest opinion. If you love magic, murder mysteries and everything within then this book is for you. I was drawn in from the beginning and enjoyed it to the end. I did lose a little interest in the middle and ended off scrolling through a few pages but overall the book is a great read. Well done.

Murder and Magic on the Beach

Moonlight Beach Murder and Magic is unlike anything I’ve ever read! A blend of old Indian magic, witchcraft, mysterious bodies and parts, and crime solving. It’s literally the best bar story ever created and bound to keep you awake for hours! Well done Yurie Kiri, and I’m looking forward to reading book two in this series.

Magically Erotic

If films such as fifty shades and the craft had a baby this would be a close mix. Add into that the dodgy liver harvesting dudes and you have a dash of charmed vibes mystery going on. If you also enjoy reading books like true blood then I’m sure this will make a nice addition to your library.

Witches, murders and an evil shaman...what more could there be? Well...throw in a dash of human greed, organ transplants, a modern day coven, adultery, ghosts and sex...then the bodies keep piling up, and the police have no clues.
This is page turner with plenty of plot twists which will keep you guessing right to the final paragraph. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story.

Moonlight Beach: Murder and Magic by Yurie Kiri, Murder and Magic is right, I am going to quote someone and if you know who it is this book is right up our alley to say. ¨If you’re a fan of the strange, dark, and mysterious…you have come to the right place.¨ Moonlight beach investigates the strange occurrences of a seaside community of Rancho, California. When I say ¨strange occurrences¨ that is an understatement. This story follows a “serial killer” but that is not quite the right term for Roy, a coven of witches, venture capitalist and just a tapestry of chicanery and intrigue to go all around the well to-do area of southern california. With the washing up on shore of human body parts on moonlight beach there is more than enough speculation to go around for everybody. Is it a “serial killer”, a coven of witches, venture capitalists that have gone for the ultimate statement on late stage capitalism by harvesting and selling human organs to the elite? This mystery weaves its way through the narrative in such a way that you cannot help but be drawn in and continue with each page turn.
For myself I particularly enjoyed the surface story, however there is also a good thinking piece below it if you are willing to look for the metaphor, some blatant such as the native american aspects and some a bit more in depth such as the coven and the caplists, there is a ton of misconceptions and murky depths to delve into in the sub-narrative. So between a very engaging surface plot and a wonderful metaphor just below the surface I have to say I do highly recommend Moonlight Beach: Murder and Magic by Yurie Kiri to the reader, I will caveat that by saying that only for 18 and up, really I personally believe 25 and up, but for purposes withstanding 18 and up only.

The talented author Yuri Kuri brings us the first in the Murder and Magic series, Moonlight Beach. The other books in this series, as well as several other books the author has written are all available on Amazon. The story opens on a California beach and the basic premise is that someone or something is murdering the residents by literally ripping their hearts out. The plot skips around from several different perspectives; a wealthy doctor, a coven of amateur witches, an unlucky surfer. Early on, a supernatural presence appears and that sets the tone for the rest of the book.
I feel that the author does an excellent job pacing out the story, there are numerous twists and turns and it helps to keep the reader engaged until the end of the book. There are many different characters here, so many, in fact, that it’s hard to keep track of them all, yet the book never feels dull or stilted. There are a lot of moving parts and they conspire to keep you guessing up until the very end.
I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in fantasy. This isn’t a typical murder/mystery, so if you are looking for that this may not be the book for you. This is book is for someone who is looking for something more original in terms of plot, but has the same witty dialogue of a more typical story.
