I don't normally like Academy books for several reasons. Firstly, as a teacher, reading about teenagers in a school is not the sort of escapism I'm after in my books. Secondly, they often include a lot of the tropes that annoy me, unless done very well, and often they're not. The cool guys/King of the school, the bitchy girls, the cheesy dialogue...it's often like watching an American teenage rom com (which I also have to time for - apart from 10 Things I Hate About You' because, come on, Heath Ledger).
However, I am please to report that the amazing Debbie Cassidy did not disappoint and I absolutely love this book, despite it, technically being an Academy book. So, here's why I loved it.
1.) The MC is 18 (almost 19) and yet her narrative voice managed to both capture the sense of her age, but without it becoming juvenile and annoying. She was irreverent, did not give a fuck and stayed true to herself, which I admire in a heroine. She was also bad ass, but not too super special snowflake. I mean, she sort of was, or they'd be no story. Female Shadow Knights are not the norm, after all, but she wasn't the smartest, or the most beautiful, or always the toughest. She got her ass kicked by Hyde and still has a lot to learn.
2.) It is an Academy book, but it is more, for me, about her training to be a Shadow Knight. This doesn't have the same anoyances for me as a school setting. Yes, she is part of the Academy still, and there are tutor's and students there, but the way it was run, and the amount of the book that dwelled on the Academy aspect, wasn't huge.
3.) Hyde... Well, let's just say HOLT SEXUAL TENSION BATMAN!!!!!! I completely loved him, and kudos to Debbie for having him heavily scared with a bionic leg. I feel like we, and Indigo have barely scratched the surface of his character. The teacher/pupil thing makes me feel icky, for obvious reasons, but I can totally get behind Shadow Knight Trainer /cadet vibe. Let's face it, everyone loves a totally hot training scene! Him and Indigo have a one step forward, five steps back kind of a thing going on, but it's delicious to read about!
4.) Minimal bullying! Another reason I avoid Academy books is the fact they go hand in hand with bullying, or even worse, what is now called 'bully romance'. Personally, I find the concept repugnant (I'd just want the MC to crotch punch them, not lust after and love the wankers) and I am happy to report that there is some very mild meanness towards the MC at the start from some students, but not from anyone she's going to get involved with, and once the plot progresses it stops. Bless for Debbie for not jumping on that shit wagon!
5.) Potentially good, platonic male friendships. Now, Debbie is one of my favourite Reverse Harem writers, and I'm not gonna lie, when we started meeting some of the other Shadow Cadets, my first thought was 'why, hello potential harem', but Indigo clearly only really has eyes for Hyde (who totally wouldn't be the sharing type) and we see the beginnings of some good camaraderie between Indigo and the guys on her team, without there being much innuendo and drooling over 8 million abs.
So, in summary, kudos Debbie for writing an Academy book I actually loved. I cannot wait until the next!
EDIT: So...apparently this is Reverse Harem 🎁🎉❤️🍰🍰🍰🍰🍰🍰🍰🍰👌🎈 It just gets better. Now I'm going to go away and play 'guess the harem'!
