It’s early July and across the United States, people are preparing for the upcoming Independence Day holiday. Millions of children are on summer break from school. One of them is Isabel Vargas. At a fair on Long Island, New York, Isabel avoids death by a millimetre when a knife buries itself into a wall behind her. Only NYPD Detective Sam Archer and his small circle of colleagues know why she may have been targeted; Isabel is the daughter of a former Manhattan mafioso, killed three years earlier along with his entire family apart from the girl, a man who’d made countless enemies in his lifetime. Isabel has since been adopted by Archer’s colleague Alice Vargas, and she and Archer both know the thrown knife was no accident. Since his first major police operation, Sam Archer has had to face death numerous times, but this time, it’s not his life on the line. For now.
With events rapidly unfolding, from Iceland to Louisiana, England to Texas, what follows is a breakneck ride, as they are pursued by a relentless and pitiless foe. Their job in the NYPD requires them to protect the city, but Archer and his colleagues’ concerns become focused on protecting an eleven year old girl who has already been to hell and back in her short life. With no choice who her family were, and having played no part in their criminal history, the child thought she’d be able to move on with her life, but not yet.
Someone seems determined to make her pay for her family’s crimes.

A Young Girl, Family Murdered Around Her...Now Someone Is After Her...
I really enjoy all stories written by this author, and this adventure with Sam Archer is right at the top! It is a fight for life for Sam and Alice, as someone is trying to kill Alice's adopted daughter, Isabel...The daughter of a former Manhattan Mafioso...Hiding in a hamper when her family is slaughtered around her...Now a Killer has attempted to remove her...And they will Not stop until they Do.... The police force closes around it's beloved members, offering help and advice whenever needed...But this is one time when so many innocents are being killed, that Archer and Alice realize they need to go on the offensive...Isabel goes with Archer's best friend, Chalky, across the pond for safety...But all their tricks and maneuvers don't work...And the Killer is on his way to her... A thrilling ride across the states and countries, trying to keep an innocent young girl alive!!!
Sam, Alice and the team face the hardest fight of their life and that's saying something. This time the person in the firing line is Isabel. Someone from her families past is out for vengeance and they don't care how many people they kill to get to her. Fortunately she has two things going for her. One her own strength, and two Sam Archer on her side. Another rollercoaster of a ride, filled with fast paced action and heart pounding drama. Bravo Tom Barber you've done it again. Keep up the good work!
I have read all the Sam Archer books so far and they just keep getting better if that is possible. So many twists and turns in Tom Barber's series. Love the camaraderie in the different police departments on both sides of the water. You never know what is going to happen next or to whom it will happen. Keeps you guessing. A definite must read. I am now going bass ackward and reading Hand Off where the leaders (Matt Shepherd and Jake Hendricks) of the two NYPD Counter-Terrorism teams first started in the police department.
Yet another great novel in the Sam Archer series. Barber is excellent at keeping you on the edge of your seat and this book is no exception. The only thing that I didn’t like is that In finishing this one, I have now read everything Tom has written and will have to patiently wait for the next to drop.
This is another good Sam Archer thriller. I have read the other 10. loved them all. However if an experienced Cop was trying to hide with a child, he wouldn’t use his own credit card to book a room. Also with the number of times Vargas had been kidnapped, she wouldn’t either. Neither would she enter her hotel room without checking it was unoccupied first.
I liked the Sam Archer books before, but this one was a heart-stopper. Just when you didn’t think things could get worse, they did. And then when it seemed the darkest, it got darker. Well done and it kept me o the edge of my seat especially the last few chapters.
Have enjoyed Tom's books. Especially the one in Harlem. Develops Characters making you hate or love them. Have read all of his books at this point. Looking for more.
Always a great and exciting escape! Just what I needed to take me away from reality for a few hours. Great storytelling, good action and characters I care about. This series is a reliable trip to action and suspense.
Although I enjoyed the book, the British spelling and idioms were at times a bit distracting. Probably just being too critical. Didn't quite fit in with a story about American gangsters! I guess that wouldn't bother most people.
Another action packed book love these books and become totally engrossed in the series and characters same you have to pay for rest of the series as i'm on Kindle unlimited cannot go to paying for the future of the series joys of being on a pension .
WOW! I’ve read everything except #7. These combo is one of the best reads I’ve encountered. This author looks too young to be this good of a writer. But, whatever, I will continue to reads his books, they’re that impressive!
This one a amazing series! If you are looking for a hard stopping roller coaster of a ride read this book and every book in this series. This series is well written, has a great cast of characters and throughly enjoyable.
It’s the only thing I want to comment on. The complete and utterly incorrect use of “y’all”. It does NOT indicate a single person use. It refers to multiple people, as in “you all“. It drives me batty.
Young Issy has captured my heart since her introduction to the series. A sign that nature doesn't determine who you are. So brave, strong and resilient. The story kept me entertained and interested from page 1.
OMG!!! Mr Tom, you out did yourself! Again!!! They just get better and better! I recommend the whole series! Trust me, you will be glad you did! Tom is a very talented author!
This is a nonstop, heart throbbing suspense thriller that has you on the edge of your seat. I stayed up most of the night reading as I needed to know what happened next.
Advise: give yourself long segments of time to read, before attempting to read this one!
Been reading this series one after the other and can’t put them down. This one was great with fast moving action and clever twists. Would highly recommend it but best to read the series from the beginning in book one to really get to know the characters and references to prior stories.
I’ve read everyone of the series and have loved them all. Only complaint in this book is the missing words, wrong words and grammar. I hope he gets a better proofing team. At this level it’s not right.
I just wish Tom could write faster!! The characters tors in his adventures are all just so. They are great and fun to root for. Great evil and greater good!!!! GMR
Once again an all action thriller from Tom Barber with the story working on several levels and on various cities. The thrills go right up to the end and the characters still have the power to draw you in and keep you reading.
Great. This was really hard to put down. The excitement never stopped. A crazed killer after an 11 year old girl. The chase across different countries. Great writing full of suspense.
Barber's books are roller coaster rides, extremely entertaining. I read books like this to escape to be entertained, thrilled. Trick Turn does exactly that. I am not a critic I will leave that for others. I simply enjoy. Thanks Tom Barber.
Such a thrill ride. Archer has his work cut out for him. The bad guy is pure evil, and trying to kill an 11 year old girl. He's a hired gun, working for a bitter, soulless, mobsters widow. Nail biting tension throughout.
Another fantastic instalment in the Sam Archer series. It makes your heart race as you follow the action around the world. Has Sam run out of luck this time?
