Beastly: The Citadel is the first book in Kiera Legend’s new paranormal series. The author introduces readers to Kit Reeves. She’s just arrived at the Citadel and boy is she getting an eye-full. She’s seeing all sorts of creatures and beings and honest…she’s feeling out of place. She’s not even there for five minutes and she’s already encountered a vampire, a werewolf, and an angel. She doesn’t feel like she belongs, so she makes it her mission to get out as quickly as possible so that she can go back home to where she feels like she belongs. Too bad the principal isn’t fazed by her attempts and simply tells her to just give things a chance. But it won’t be long before Kit notices strange things going on with the students and that there is danger afoot.
Beastly: The Citadel – Semester One is an engaging paranormal novel that mixes romance and mystery together into this novel that had me page-turning to the end. Kit is an interesting character and overall I really like her. She doesn’t necessarily want to be at the Citadel but I’m glad that for the most part, she’s not running around making a scene and being clownish about not wanting to be there. She makes a few friends, but then she also sets herself up for a couple of bad interactions as well. I mostly appreciate that there isn’t any catty female drama in this book of where she has to deal with jealousy from other girls. The story focuses strongly on Kit and then encompasses the trio of guys who have caught her attention. I think one of my favorite characters in this story was the head librarian. I love how the author goes against the usual stereotype and has her young, interesting, and not the “shush, you’re in a library” type. Instead, she likes those who are rebellious and encourages it. I found this both amusing and refreshing.
I like the mystery the author weaves into this story. It keeps the story going and interesting along with Kit’s interactions with the three different guys who have caught her attention. The author does an excellent job putting in place the building blocks of a reverse-harem/why choose romance. The guys have such dynamically different personalities and I loved every second of it.
There isn’t much that I don’t like about this book, but there is one complaint that I have to make. While Kit has been going around making friends it seems that the author has neglected her making female friends. Now! I say that, but I also do acknowledge that she has a sort of friendship with Hailey. I say sort of friendship because that’s how I view it…” sort of.” They don’t hang out. Hailey is not someone Kit seeks out or asks for help when a certain situation arises. Instead, she goes and seeks out only the guys. I understand her attraction to the guys, but I’d like to see her interact with some more female characters in the next book. I want more actual interactions and less in passing/brief mention to show that there are others that she interacts with from time to time.
I truly enjoyed this book and it flows well from beginning to end. For that reason, I am rating this book 4.5 out of 5 stars. I’m taking off half a star because I want more female characters and interaction with Kit. I feel that this will help balance out the story. Also, it will help Kit look less like a bit of a hypocrite when she wanted to talk about “sexist bs” from men when all she spends her time with is guys. For those who enjoy paranormal romance novels with a healthy dose of mystery, this is a good book to pick up. There are some heated moments, but I can easily say that this book is a slow-burn with a cliffhanger. So for those who don’t like cliffhanger novels…this book comes with one, but it only makes me anticipate the next book in this series.

Kit wanted to go to college with her friends but her parents insisted she go away to attend a different college- one that is not what Kit expected. She seems to be the only normal student in a school full of the supernatural, things Kit is not even sure exist. All she wants to do is go home and get her regular life back on track, but it seems life has other plans for her.

Beastly was a very quick read, easy to power through in a day since it was only a little over five hours long. The author was able to create a detailed, unique world in so few pages, which I find very impressive. The main character finds herself enrolled in a college that just so happens to be full of shifters- and in this case, shifters just so happen to be all kinds of creatures such as animal shifters, vampires, angels and who knows what else. My favorite creature just so happened to be Herman the boggart, and while he was not a shifter, he was ridiculous and mischievous and I loved whenever he showed up because I was certain I would be entertained.

The plot dealt with the regular angst of fitting into a new college as well as a new kind of world, lots of secrets, conspiracies and discoveries dealing with the supernatural world, a possible reverse harem with potential relationships with three different boys (keep in mind this was fairly PG, with a few kisses and some over the clothes groping and lust) and then the undercurrent of a drastic problem in the regular world. Everything intertwined nicely to make a cohesive plot, with Kit inadvertently smack dab in the middle of it all.

I found this entertaining and interesting and it totally plays into my current obsession with the academy book trend that is on the rampage. The narrator was perfect at bringing Kit to life and she did voices for the other character that gave everyone personality which I loved. I will for certain be picking up the next book in this world because I have so many questions and I need to know more. This is the second series I have read by this author and I enjoyed both immensely and I will read whatever she wants to create in the future because I know it will be fun.

2.5-3 Stars. Not a bad start to the series story wise, though there were some parts that definitely could have used more world building and explanations to really strengthen some things up plot wise. As for the characters/romance aspects.. well they fell flat for me, personally. It might have something to do with the complete YA feel and the immaturity (not annoying but just young) of the character's personalities themselves.

Our FMC, Kit, is confusing for the most part. She is dead set against attending this private academy from the very begining, even before she finds out about the supernatural world. The supernatural aspects were introduced in a very nonchalant way which also threw me off because realistically if a person gets thrown in to a situation like this you would think there would be... just more. More awe, more fear, more anger at never knowing about this world, more curiosity at why her parents think she should be here at this supernatural school to begin with.. just more explanation in general about the whole concept. When Kit finally discovers that she does actually "belong" you would think that once again there would just be "more" about it but it was very just meh about the whole thing. Very confusing for a whole "intro to the supernatural world" plot line. Then comes all the questions like why have her parents kept it from her? Are her parents also supernatural? What made them think she was? I got a little lost in the plot holes here. That being said, I do actually like Kit's take charge attitude as well as her moral code for the most part. She seems easily fired up about any issues and incredibly curious as well as willing to do what it takes to make a difference. I also really enjoyed all the little creatures she "befriends" and is able to use their skills to her best advantage. As for the romance.. these are really young characters so I wasn't really excpecting too much, but the lack of chemistry and age/hormonal "angst" was actually I think detrimental to the story. I'm not much for the teenage angst but I also recognize when you have a group of young teens that this is a realistic concept.. at the same time you don't have to take it too far, if that makes sense. Honestly, the only chemistry present was with the angel dude.. and even he seemed.. distracted at best.

I think the series has promise. No cliffhanger as of yet but it seems like we have an ongoing story line starting to bud. I'm not quite sure the whole thing has the flow I'm looking for though. It was decent but didn't rock my world or anything.

This story was Beastly indeed!

When Kit arrives at her college, she is baffled by some weird details that test the limits of her sanity. But, although she always lived a normal life within a normal world, she soon has to accept that there is another side to the world. The other side of “The Bargain”. A law between humans and supernaturals, made long ago, that the supernaturals will stay hidden and in return no human will hunt supernaturals. Of course, these days, The Bargain is not known amongst the human population because the supernaturals have stayed hidden all that time so the the danger of the hunting part may be eaten by time but that will only last as long as the supernaturals remain hidden (and thus people won’t panic).

So now, ordinary Kit finds herself on the side of supernaturals, enrolled in The Citadel, an Academy for shifters of all kinds. Isn’t that the biggest mistake ever!

Or is it? What exactly is her place amongst all these shifters?

But when classmates start loosing control over their shifter side, Kit proves herself quite the asset in The Citadel. After meeting Jimmy, a werewolf and an activist, they theorize that just maybe the pollution of the lake has something to do with the students loosing control.

After a certain incident it is clear to Kit she has to toughen up. Get in shape, if she wants to get out of this on top. Luckily she knows the perfect guy for the job. And even more lucky, she also has the perfect guy to relax with outside of the gym too.

But when puch comes to shove she will need the three of them to help save herself and the school too while she’s at it.

This first book is light on the RH part, I’d say, not that I’m an expert but that’s my assessment.

So anyways, I quite love the story and it’s characters and now I’m curious to book 2!

This was a really fun and engaging read. Kit and her inner ramblings were entertaining and I loved how she always stepped up to take control or lend a hand; even when it was the last thing she wanted to do. I enjoyed seeing her grow throughout the story and become more at ease with herself and her surroundings and work to fit in. I am looking forward to seeing how she matures as the series progresses.

The additional characters in the book were charming and interesting, as well. I look forward to learning more about each of them and seeing how their relationships develop with Kit. Who will ultimately be a friend, a romantic interest, or maybe even an enemy?

Since this is a YA academy read, you will find your typical young adult social statuses and interactions, the mean clicks, jocks who think they are ‘all that’, the rule-breakers, and the nerdy type bookworms who just want to bend in to the scenery, and all that comes along with a school-type setting. This story gives the reader a variety of characters, emotions, actions, and resolutions that fit well within the storyline. If you enjoy angels, vampires, werewolves, strange things that go bump in the night, angsty drama, and quirky teachers…this book will give you that and more.

There is plenty of suspense, fun, danger, mystery, excitement, surprises, and even a stirring of romance hiding within the walls of the Citadel along with magic, mayhem and budding friendships to make an enjoyable read. This series is set to be a YA reverse harem and Beastly is book one. It was a fun story and I am looking forward to the rest of the series.

Beastly.
A 3.5 star rating from mysel.

Beastly certainly is a promising start to a new series. I cant really say the story was for me. But thats okay, everyone is different and likes different things. It didnt wow me. But im hoping the second book maybe will? The biggest thing for me was the main character felt a little flat. The young girl has been thrusted into a world of the paranormal. Something she didnt know exists beyond books and films. But she kinda just accepted things laying down. She was lacking character and personality for me. The rest of the character's also felt a little of the same. The story line has huge potential and i will certainly go on to read book 2, as when i join characters in a world i like to know what happens through out the story as a whole. So i have everything crossed that the second instalment picks up its pace a bit more and the characters have more omff in them.

"I recieved an Advanced Review Copy of this book."
This book was intriguing. Definitely not what I expected so that's what kept me reading. I liked all the characters in this story. Kit seems fearless to me even though she wants to leave so bad. She was the first to stand up and help. Also lots of hotties!!! I liked them all. DeAngelo the angel artistic genius. Jimmy the werewolf protester for environmental health. Chuck the vampire sports jock. Also we are left with a mystery when she kisses each guy. You get to read up on the build up from each kiss you can tell something different is happening. We will hopefully discover the truth of in the next book as to why that happens with the guys. I think Kit will somehow be different and I'm excited to read how. Loved this story.

I got to 72% and stopped because the MC was too immature and was making highly illogical decisions with it looking like the author was going to continue to let her make. Most of all I stopped because I could not connect with the story. I didn’t care about Kit’s situation. I liked what I saw of the potential male love interests than I did her. She was annoying and had no depth. Maybe the author was channeling the 18 mindset and it’s on me that I couldn’t connect but I’ve read other books with a naive immature MC who by 72% seemed on her way to making better choices instead going full speed ahead in whatever conspiracy theory she got going on in her head with no facts to base it on.

I love Kit Deangelo, Jimmy, and Chuck they are some really great characters. Sassy Artsy Serious and funny describe each. There is a mystery of the students spontaneously shifting and not having control that makes Kit want to find out why. My favorite line in the book was between Collins the police officer and Kit being
"Seems to me you turn up wherever there's trouble," she (Collins) said. "So do you," I (Kit) pointed out. "That's my job." "I just do it for a hobby." I laughed hard at that. I can't wait to get the next book im so excited to read it.

Kit is thrust into a world she never knew existed but takes it all very well even if she doesn't think she is one of them. While try to get sent back home by breaking the rules she learns of a darkness in this new world that she cant help but trying you save the people around her. Story was a really good read some great mystery that keeps you guys as to who is behind the attack. And of course through in a few boys for some romance what more could you want.

Really good

I really enjoyed this book. She had no clue as to what she was getting herself into when she received the letter for college. Once there she knows there are strange things and soon learns the college is of the supernatural and she's somehow a part of it all. It has some interesting turns and is one I really did like along with all the characters. Cant wait to find out how to relationships continue to progress and the storyline.

This was such a good book.

Kit has such a strong, caring, and rebel personality.
She tries to act like she doesn’t care about the school or friends. As her time goes on at the school she starts to care more about the other students and the school.

In the end she shows her true self and loves it.

Cannot wait for another book.

This was a Fantastic read.
I had a great time reading it.
I can't wait for book 2, please hurry.
Those 3 guys, Deangelo, Chuck and Jimmy are cool,
but only one is my favorite, I hope Kit will find out who that is LOL.
But the best off them all was: HERMAN, I loved it.
Please keep him in the next books, that's so awesome and funny.
Thanks Kiera Legend for such a great read.

Interesting

The storyline is unique and a good read. You have the MC placed in a college where she doesn’t want to be but then realizes that that’s where she needs to be. Different causes and detective work leads on who is making the student shift unexpectedly. Look forward to the next book to see what else is planned for her.

Total Score: 5/5

Summary:
All Kit wanted was to go to school with her friends, but what she got was sent to a private academy where nothing was what it seemed. The world turned upside down where seemingly mythical creatures like shifters, angels, and vampires are par for the course. Welcome to The Citadel where Kit has no idea why she is even there. A lone human surrounded by situations that would make people thinks they are going crazy. While not fitting in, Kit’s strong sense of right and wrong somehow places her in the middle of things that the school staff seem unable to deal with. Things are not that much different and Kit finds herself drawn to three very different boys who couldn’t be more different. Between a jock, an artist and an activist, Kit will find things at The Citadel will never be boring, she just has to uncover the danger before things really get out of control.

This audio-book came alive holding the reader riveted waiting to see what would happen next and the story had just begun.

The world of this story is pretty nice and interesting. It's genuinely good to see the supernatural world fitting into the human world. Shifters occupy important positions in the human world, and humans in power are aware of the presence of shifters in their society.

The biggest failing of this book are the characters. The male characters are cliches. They are honestly insufferable. I wouldn't want to be near any of them, let alone dating them. The FMC is annoying. She honestly seems to be very spoiled. She wants everything done her way and never stops to consider the risk to other people or the damage she is causing around her. Of course, this is the author's wish-fulfillment fantasy, so it all works out in the end and little miss perfect turns out to be a hero. Call me a cynic, but I like a character with flaws and grit who learns to adapt and grow. Our FMC is too embarrassed to work out in front of others and gets on of the male leads to help her at midnight and still turns out to be a prick to him. She is too embarrassed to be seen struggling in class so she spends weeks pretending not to have powers that she ought to be learning to control. I am glad the principle and Jimmy called her out on her bullshit, and I wish the librarian would stop enabling this behaviour.

The plot is not that great either. It's unexpected for a book in this genre, but it's not exactly a tight-knit work. The FMC just kind of stumbles onto the plot at some point in the book and everything works itself out.

All in all, a disappointing book. Avoid if you can.

It took me a little bit to get into Kit’s story. At first her character seems a little selfish and immature but as the her story progresses Kit’s characters gradually changes and becomes closer to the type of heroines I like. Jimmy, Chuck and Deangelo are interesting characters with a lot of potential. Their story really picks up toward the end and has a couple of good twists. Overall I found their tale to be intriguing and entertaining.
I’m curious to see how the plot and characters develop in the next book. (3.5⭐️)
