I was in middle school in 1964 when the British invasion began rocking the American pop culture. The Beatles were the consensus #1 however other British bands battled to top the billboard charts including the Rolling Stones and to a lesser degree the Kinks. The Kinks were not my favorite British band but I sought to know more about them. This book offers the groups day to day diary as well as behind the scenes biographical information. At 8 ½” X 11”, the paperback appears to be more of a textbook. It is not true coffee table material, yet at the same time it is too cumbersome to house on a bookshelf.

Ray Davies, the group’s inspirational leader, vocalist and songwriter was born in England in 1944. On his 13th birthday his older sister gave him a guitar and tragically died later in the evening from a heart defect while out dancing. Ray’s challenge with insecurity was jolted. Rather than become a factory worker or baker he was determined to follow his passion with music. It’s not all about making songs as lead musicians must acquire marketing and promotion skills to run a business. His brother Dave (3 years younger) was a welcome addition to the quartet, but also added potential family feuds.

One pivotal factor that altered the Kink’s rise to fame occurred on Friday July 2, 1965. After recording a few songs in Hollywood, CA for the ABC television program “Where the Action Is” Ray Davies got into an argument with a union official representing the American Federation of Television& Radio Artists, which escalated into a fistfight. The outcome was disastrous and although the Kinks were not officially banned from the U.S. they found it very difficult to work with promoters. It was a regrettable situation. During their peak they played to sellout crowds and in some fashion they lingered on towards the end of the 20th Century.

“All Day and all of the Night” (1964) captures the early sound of the Beatles while other hits like “Waterloo Sunset” (1967) paint a vivid picture through lyrics. I’m not sure what prompted Ray Davies to reach out of his sphere and record the hit “Lola” (1970) but that he did. For me “Don’t Forget to Dance” (1983) is a lasting beautiful song as Ray Davies chimes:

“Don't forget to dance,
no, no, no
Don't forget to smile.”

In my twilight years I hope I continue to recall these simple aspects of life.
