Sidelights: Carey told Contemporary Authors: "I began writing late; my first articles and stories were published after I was thirty, and I was motivated by money. Money is not a bad motivation. The need to eat keeps us from laziness, and the fact that someone is willing to pay to read what we write assures us that we have indeed written."
"I think that writing should be honest and simple, and it should say something about what it means to be a person. When God is good to us, we write in such a way that the act of reading becomes a pleasure to those who buy our books. This experience doesn't happen all the time, but when it does it is at least as heady as winning the Irish sweepstakes. It makes mere competence seem dull. It is probably also what makes writing a compulsive occupation; some of us are uncomfortable when we are away from our typewriters for any length of time."
"My lifelong ambition, aside from writing, is to finish exploring the American West. This should keep me busy for at least another thirty years, since there is a
T3I Update: 43 read, 0 to go! That's it! I am done with the original series!
This book was a bittersweet read for me. I knew going into it that this would be the last "new" book I could read of the original series (there are still Crimebusters and Find-Your-Fate T3I books I have not read), so I really did not want to go through this book very fast. Still, I ended up going through it quickly because of the quality of the story and because I wanted to know how the series ended. This is the typical Mary Virginia (M.V.) Carey type of Three Investigators book. She HAD to put something in it that could not be explained in any other way other than "ghosts" or supernatural means, but the "ghostly" explanation only applied to part of the solution and did not impact the main part of the mystery. Personally, and maybe this is just me, if you are trying to write a child's mystery book where the youthful investigators solve and explain the crime, then ALL parts of the solution should be explainable and based in reality. This book, like almost all of the other books in the series, contain the usual T3I elements that make this series so great: the three boys (Jupiter Jones aka Jupe, Pete Crenshaw, and Bob Andrews)--too young to obtain a driver's license--solve a mystery plot that baffles adults and confounds police. The boys use their secret headquarters, ask for car rides from the adults in their lives (Uncle Titus, Hans the salvage yard worker, etc), and beg for permission and even forgiveness from authority figures such as Jupe's Aunt Mathilda. In the end, they solve the mystery, find the kidnapped victim, and set everything right in the world again before fading off into the book series oblivion. It is clear that the authors (multiple authors worked on the series) and the series editor (Eugenia "Jenny" Fanelli) did not think that this book would be the last of the series if for no other reason than the last line of the book: "What would they all come up with next?" Unfortunately, the answer was nothing. According to Seth Smolinske, the webmaster at http://www.threeinvestigatorsbooks.com/ , a book #44 was in the writing process at the time the series was cancelled. Several fans tried to find out more information about book #44, but given than both M.V. Carey and Eugenia Fanelli have now passed away, it is very doubtful than the manuscript will ever come to publication. Part of Seth's website gives a listing of all 43 published books and a small blurb about book #44 (see http://www.threeinvestigatorsbooks.co... for more details).
This was an enjoyable, if somewhat bittersweet, read. No more "new" Three Investigators books for me--at least not in the way I knew the boys in my childhood. It is an awesome series, and I would HIGHLY recommend each and every one of the books to anyone interested in Young Adult Mystery books! Five stars ALWAYS for the series! Enjoy!
Well this is bittersweet. This was a good mystery, but also the last of the series and I hate to see it end. I'm going to try out the early 1990s reboot, but I have a feeling it won't match the nostalgia of this series that I read as a child.
Overall The Three Investigators was a great book series and if you have children that enjoy mysteries this is a great series for them to read, although sadly some of the books are probably a little hard to find.
I give the entire series an overall 5 stars and it will always be on of my favorites.
And thus ends my revisit and final completion of reading this series of books.
As with many of the later books, this one suffers from an over complicated plot and a couple of unrelated red herrings. However, there are some noteworthy changes. For one, the boys are randomly working as a waiters for a caterer to earn some extra cash. But this story seems to be an attempt at writing an Agatha Christie-esque mystery. We have a social gathering of a disliked wealthy man. When he suddenly disappears, it seems that everyone is a suspect.
It's an nice change from the typical, but then again, like my complaint about the previous book, it moves away from the concept that children are less judgmental than adults so they can shine as investigators.
This would have been a solid entry into the series except for M.V. Carey once again introducing actual ghosts into the story. Why didn't the editors of this series stop her from erring so many times? This is a mystery series set in the real world, not a horror or fantasy series.
This is among my very favorites of the Three Investigators series. Despite the now-outdated computer references(replacing this with a room full of filing cabinets would have actually aged better), M.V. Carey's writing and character development are excellent here. For a change, the boys become involved in helping some rather unpleasant people. Jeremy Pilcher, the miserly hoarder of the title, never becomes any kinder in the story, remaining stubbornly mean and ruthless. His daughter is not exactly sweetness and light either, though she is a more complex character who clearly doesn't want to become any more like her father. Ray Sanchez was quite a likable side character with a few secrets of his own. Despite her numerous '80s references, I will gladly admit that M.V. Carey always delivers when it comes to the personalities and relationships of the characters!
Little disappointed for this to be the finale in the 3 investigator's series. Also MV Carey's final installment in this series before she died. It was quick read but a little boring. Wealthy hated man character. I will miss Bob, Pete, Jupe, & the junkyard headquarters.
So ends my read through of the series to revisit my childhood. A whimper of a book in general though the climax was something of a bang. If you are thinking of reading the three investigators read the ten books by the original author, Robert Arthur. The rest are very uneven and generally not worth the effort, though a few are almost randomly quite good.
During the pandemic, I tracked down all of the books in this series. Tonight I finished reading the last one! It’s not a very memorable one although I did appreciate that after all of the other books debunked any supernatural explanations, this one did not.
I don't know, but I'm just not feeling this book right now. Bored me to tears. 1 more book to go, and I will have finished the whole series. This was just another one of the mediocre later entries.
Sadly it is the last original one as it ended in America too soon. 43 books are in this series, showing small stories to get yourself to think about what had happened behind the scenes. In Germany we already have around 217 books and more will come out each year. There are also 217 audiobooks about this series which are meant for kids but adults too.
