From the back cover: Lovingly coloured for this collection, Dejects spans 25 years of Jay Stephens' unique and diverse comics, available here for the first time since their original appearances in print, and some for the very first time anywhere!
Dejects collects previously uncollected material written and drawn by Jay Stephens. Some strips, like Jungle Shi-Tzu, Nature Show, and Twerp, are great. Others are hit or miss.
Humor is very subjective. And, often, it doesn't always age well. I dom't mean it gets problematic. I mean humor evolves and what was once edgy (again, not in a problematic way) and humorous feels dated and kind of boring. That's how this book hit me.
If, however, you're a fan of 90s cartooning, this might be a love letter to you. I do like the visual style, but the jokes don't land for me, so it wasn't a fun read.
I had only a passing knowledge of Jay Stephens' work when I saw an ad on social media for this new book, and that some of the proceeds from the sales would be going to a charity whose work I supported. The book is beautiful, the strips included are a good representation of Jay's work, lots of chuckles.
