Ella became guardian to a newborn, in the South, just after the Civil War has concluded. She is alone and hardly able to care for herself, so how will she care for a child? She seeks help at Belmont, a plantation that seems to have come through the war with less damage than most. Somehow, she finds herself pretending to be the widow of the missing soldier/owner Major Westley Remington - a Union officer. Then he shows up. Secrets and intrigue make for a great reading experience. I was transported to Ella's world and loved it.
Sweet story about a lonesome young woman who takes an orphan baby to raise. She is told there is a wet nurse at the Remington Mansion and the complications begin then. When Westley Remington, presumed dead in the war, arrives home, he has quite a few surprises in store for him.
