Ella became guardian to a newborn, in the South, just after the Civil War has concluded. She is alone and hardly able to care for herself, so how will she care for a child? She seeks help at Belmont, a plantation that seems to have come through the war with less damage than most. Somehow, she finds herself pretending to be the widow of the missing soldier/owner Major Westley Remington - a Union officer. Then he shows up. Secrets and intrigue make for a great reading experience. I was transported to Ella's world and loved it.

It was a good story, and liked the strength and determination of Ella very much, but I slowed down my reading tremendously the last half of the book. Looking back, I feel that the love between them was a bit rushed, I feel that they needed a little more time doing something together.
I also wonder why he left so quickly without making some kind of arrangements for the land, he had to of known that plans needed to be made for the at least few former slaves still on the land to be paid, and at the very least to pay the people left to live on, and future taxes.

The plot line was interesting. I was really hopeful about the setting and the post civil war world in the South. I loved the character of Sibby, but the whole thing just lacked a bit for me. The pacing was off for me. The pacing of the relationship, the secrecy on the property, the interactions with the town and then the army. It all just flared up as needed for the drama of the story. It was ok but I don't think I'll continue reading further books.

Sweet story about a lonesome young woman who takes an orphan baby to raise. She is told there is a wet nurse at the Remington Mansion and the complications begin then. When Westley Remington, presumed dead in the war, arrives home, he has quite a few surprises in store for him.

It was a sweet little Christian romance but I was a little shocked by his behavior at the end. If I were her, I'd be worried by how violent he became with the jailor just doing his job. She doesn't know him well, she's married him without knowing him much, and that sign of lack of patience is alarming. Oh well.
