Lainey

It’s my brother’s fault I’m in this mess.

Flying is my number one fear. And what does he do? He chooses a destination wedding in Ireland, all the way across the Atlantic. So, before I board the metal deathtrap, I knock back a drink… or two… or possibly three, just to calm my nerves.

And now I’m so drunk, I can’t think straight.

But I’m sober enough to know my seatmate is the sexiest guy I’ve ever laid eyes on.

Xavier

I’m sitting next to the most adorable girl I’ve ever seen.

Well, almost adorable. She’s a little tipsy. Strike that. She’s plastered. But we still manage to hit it off. Behind that sarcastic booze-fueled mouth is a girl I could really fall for.

Too bad she has no idea I’m in a wheelchair.

I’m not afraid of flying, but I’m terrified of how she’ll feel when she finds out the truth.

Sweet quick read, the author did a good job of writing about a relationship complicated by disability. I'd love to see it develop further, not just in a novella, but I had fun reading it.

"Lainey." His grin grew wider, popping those amazing dimples of his. He lifted his outstretched palm, and I extended my shaky hand, placing it in his. "Nice to see you again." He clasped my fingers and gave my knuckles a kiss.

Happy disability pride month!! This is a decently entertaining and pretty fun novella featuring Xavier (H), who is a wheel-chair using paraplegic, and Lainey (h) who's an overall pretty sweet heroine.

I liked the detail in which the author wrote, about Xavier's maneuvers in his wheelchair. I found it very eye-opening! Of course, I also enjoyed the way Kingston showed wheel-chair users absolutely can and do have love/sex lives. Lainey and Xavier dancing together was everything!

From the beginning, the characters meet and it's really entertaining, with Lainey being drunk and sat next to Xavier on a plane.

However, there was some "i'm not like other girls" stuff going on, from both the heroine and the hero, and I didn't understand Lainey's brother's anger. This has the brother's best friend trope, and the brother gets so mad and violent toward the hero and is concerningly, weirdly possessive of the heroine. On his wedding day! He should have been paying attention to his wife.

The hero used to be in the army, so his inner monologue is pretty alpha male dude bro if you catch my drift, but this was overall a decent novella if you're looking for something to get you out of you slump and that has representation of wheel-chair users! Thank you @avareadsromance for the recommendation (she has a bunch of youtube videos recommending books with disability representation if you're on the hunt for some!).

Alright, buckle up buttercups!
Let me start by saying that I LOVE LOVE LOVE seeing Avery's messages regarding her ARC's. I get the warm and fuzzies and I'm like a kid on Halloween night after dive bombing the candy bag!
"GIMME, GIMME, GIMMEE"
I'm, normally, not a fan of short stories. BUT! This book is so endearing and REAL. Short, way too short! But soooooo good.
I'm not going to give you an outline of the book but I am going to tell you that you are truly missing out if you do not read this. Buy the book, love it and then explore what else this spectacular author has written. She is a gem and you will come to adore her writing as much as I do. Happy reading ;)

❝Lainey, I love you. I think I loved you from the moment I first laid eyes on you—❞
❝Only because I stuck my tits in your face,❞ she interrupted.
I grinned. ❝Ok, I have to admit those are fantastic, but no.❞

I love love loved this book! These two were such a sweet couple, and the way they met was just perfect. It was a novella, but I felt like it was the right length, although I definitely want to read more about this couple, hopefully in the future! This is definitely a sweet and sexy read with a feelgood ending. I couldn't recommend this more highly!

Lainey is terrified of flying. So she imbibes a little bit of liquid courage before she climbs aboard the flight to her older brother’s destination wedding. Xavier has a reason to be afraid of flying – he was injured in a training jump from an airplane back when he was in the military, resulting in him being paralyzed – but that’s a fear he conquers every day at his ‘let’s jump out of planes for fun’ job. Instead, he’s more nervous about the cute, drunk girl sitting beside him thinking he’s got no manners since he doesn’t stand up to let her pass when she’s coming in/out of their row. Still, somehow, they manage to make mostly positive impressions on each other, and Xavier’s pretty upset that he had to wait for his chair to de-board the plane and lost out on being able to follow his seat mate and ask for her number.

It’s ok though, since they get another chance at her brother Gibson’s wedding the next day. Turns out, Xavier is a friend from his Army days, and he’s in the wedding too (I feel like this book is part of a broader book universe, but Goodreads has it listed as a standalone, so I’m going to have to take their word for it, I suppose). Hijinks and more flirting (and, quickly, more than flirting) commence. Since it’s a novella, there’s not a ton of character development time, but I think Kingston uses what space she does have to great effect: You know enough about Lainey to get that she loves her family, even though they drive her crazy. That she’s used to them thinking of her in a certain way – kind of flighty, maybe not all that serious – and she both gets it and is sick of it. We get that Xaiver plays up his playboy past role with his friends (even his best friend, Gibson, to his detriment, when he starts hitting it off with Gibson’s baby sister), but it’s not who he is anymore, and he wishes somebody would notice. Readers get to see how much he refuses to let fear control his life, and how much he really just wants to be seen as ‘normal’.

I’m going to say now that this got bumped up my gigantic TBR because somebody else reviewed it, and had some negative things to say about having a hero in a wheelchair.
n fact, I then made a reallllly long sub-sheet on my extensive Excel TBR with Disabled Heroes & Heroines to read & review, because: Shut up.

Disabled people deserve happy endings too, and it’s not “forcing diversity” to include them in romances. Hello: We…exist?

I’m really confused why a hero in a wheelchair would ruin your HEA, but that’s on you. The only time I’m going to complain about a wider spectrum of H/h-s is when they’re not full and complete characters, and that’s definitely not the case here. In fact, as a wheelchair user myself, I felt like Kingston really nailed a few of the smaller details that wound up making Xavier’s character feel more authentic. The idea of Xavier ‘pacing’ via his chair, with the subtle back and forth of his wheels was one of those details that hit home for me (definitely a thing I, and a lot of wheelchair users I know, do.) The fact that Lainey found the move cute in her thoughts, was also one of those little things that hit home for me: Most characters wouldn’t tell a non-disabled character all the things they found cute about him on (technically) their first date, but too often, in romance that includes diverse characters – and specifically disabled characters – authors go out of their way to make the point that YES these two people are attracted to each other!!!, and make them do/say all sorts of things that you wouldn’t ordinarily expect a character to do/say in that position. So the fact that she thinks it, but doesn’t say it earned a lot of bonus points here, from me.

There were also the complete embarrassing screw-ups and misunderstandings that happen when you’re disabled that you don’t have any control over and just have to go with the flow of – elevators that don’t work, a kid asking nosy questions, being waist high to everybody and not being able to reach everywhere you’d want to reach – plus a bitchy bridesmaid who didn’t want to get stuck walking down the aisle with the ‘special guy’, which is also, unfortunately too real, and I think the author handled those with aplomb. I’m not 100% sure that the sex scene – yes, there is a sex scene – passes the “magical healing Heroine” test (aka ‘I can’t do X, normally, but somehow with you… I magically can), but there is A Lot of what nondisabled people might call uncomfortable discussions about what works, what doesn’t, how sex can be enjoyable for both of them, and what it’s going to look like, that I found spot-on believable, so I’m going to average it out and give her kudos for the lot. There were definitely things brought up here (I promise I didn’t mean that as a pun, but oops) that I have never seen discussed in other romances, ever, so five stars and hooray.

I think since it was a novella, a lot of things were too rushed, but Kingston managed to cover a lot in very few pages, and to portray a disabled character as just… a regular-ish guy, whole and complete, thinking and caring and complicated, just like the heroine. Definitely a positive in my book. Also, worth it for the breakfast brunch after scene.

First, things that I liked: I enjoyed reading the beginning scene in the airplane because the conversation on the airplane between Lainey and Xavier flowed naturally. I chuckled internally at her humor. She would overthink things and it made her so relatable in that moment. I thought Lainey's personality for the most part was charming and logical, which kept me reading. I appreciated the disability representation, and found it meaningful and informative. I liked the epilogue a lot.

Unfortunately, I didn't like a lot of things about the writing. There were some things I found illogical and unrealistic about the story.

Also, the writing is subtly sexist. The way Xavier referred to women as chicks and the multiple times he described how he went through women quickly felt objectifying and demeaning. There was casual slut-shaming that was completely unnecessary. She could've conveyed the same message without using the word slut. Or talking about other women.

Furthermore, I didn't like that Lainey went on and on about how attractive Xavier is, to the point where she starts making self-deprecating comments.
Side note: I've never understood the forbidden aspect of the brother's best friend trope. Fortunately, this wasn't a big issue in this story. Why wouldn't you approve of a relationship between two of the most beloved people in your life? You already know your best friend is a good man that you trust and you obviously would want your sister to be with someone trustworthy, so this should be an ideal arrangement.

a well written story that was unfortunately far too short to really dive into the characters but it had a lot of potential - I really wished for it to be longer - but if this is any indication of how the stories in that series will be I can not wait to read more - I just hope that the other stories are longer but I guess it depends also on the authors #sigh

I'm not usually a fan of novellas, but I just loved this book! Why? Because the author seamlessly blended the love story with heat, romance, and the main character being paralyzed.

I learned so much about paralysis and the challenges that comes with, both emotionally, sexually, and physically. But this book never feels preachy or tragically sad. Instead we get heat and sizzle and real life along with a sweet love story.

This is definitely a novella I would recommend!

This was a sweet, low angst contemporary romance novella with disability rep. Lainey and Xavier first meet on a flight to Ireland, they’re both going to the same wedding but don’t realize it until the end of the flight.

Xavier was in the military, but after an accident lead to a major injury, he got out and now owns/runs a skydiving shop where he does dual jumps as an instructor. He is headed to Ireland to be a groomsmen in his battle buddy’s wedding when the story starts. Lainey arrives on the flight at the very last minute, drunk because she has a fear of flying and seated next to Xavier. She assumes he’s being a jerk when he doesn’t stand to let her into their row, not knowing he’s a wheelchair user. Xavier doesn’t tell her right away and then every time after that he’s about to bring it up, he gets interrupted or something else comes up. Lainey, a freelance graphic artist who designs covers for indie authors, is headed to her brother’s wedding, who happens to be Xavier’s buddy.

Lainey and Xavier hit it off right away and feel a connection. I loved their in-flight meet cute moment. They meet again at the wedding when they’re going down the aisle together in the wedding party. Xavier is a little wary of her reaction to learning about his wheelchair, but I liked how Lainey proves him wrong. There is some drama with her brother, who isn’t happy his friend and sister are hitting it off (this felt over the top, like dude it’s your wedding chill out).

A sweet novella with two very likable characters & by chance share a connection to a very important person in their lives. A third of the book is quite amusing with Lainey taking her seat already half drunk as she has a fear of flying. Xavier has his own fears, not so much about flying but how this attractive seat mate will react to his little secret. In spite of the short length, the characters are developed enough to be relatable, interesting & believable. There's a quick epilogue that wraps everything up into a neat little package. A nice quick read.

This was an absolutely delightful romance novella! I’ve been addicted to Avery Kingston’s depictions of heroes with disabilities, and this paraplegic hero is so, so, so perfect. This story is realistic and raw, sweet and hopeful. I really, really wish this book had been full length, like her others, because she could have gone a lot deeper into Lainey and Xavier and their love story! (Also, I forgive the author for naming the guy in the wheelchair Xavier, because after reading Take Me Down, I know she’s a huge nerd and probably an X-men fan! LOL)
POPSUGAR Reading Challenge 2022: This book fulfills the "A book set on a plane, train, or cruise ship" category.

If you’re looking for some adorable fluff without being sickeningly sweet, this story is for you. You’ve got a genuinely nice, hot, tatted guy and a slightly awkward but charming, cute, tiny girl... I mean, come on, the visual alone makes your heart swell a little, right? Add in some alcohol and... well, I don’t want to say too much to give anything away, but it’s a fun ride.

Read it. You’ll like it. :)

And because I think it needs to be said: The research that went into this story to give us a glimpse into what life is like for Xavier (and real-life paras) is incredible. Too many authors who write characters with disabilities gloss over so much of the every day things that most people wouldn’t even think about (how they function physically, cope mentally and emotionally, etc.), but they’re such big things to the ones living with those issues that they deserve to be shown. Not only does it educate people, but it just gives the story so much more authenticity than if the details were left out. A story may still be good, and passable with 4 stars, but when the author goes the extra mile and spends time to make the it realistic, it makes it worthy of all 5 stars. - I want to read books that make me wish the characters were my friends because I know them so well, books that make me FEEL things, and I’ve yet to be disappointed by any of Avery’s stories.

Was partway into this when I realized i had DNFed it previously. Nevertheless, i persisted.

Was it worth it? Eh.

Cute storyline, respectful handling of paraplegic day to day and abilities, good dialogue.

Lots of overused tropes and little dangling bits of plot device along with a healthy dose of typos/misused words took me out of the story.

And what the fuck is up with her brother? What sort of caveman “defends his sister’s honor” by starting a fistfight at a family event? For a woman well into her twenties, by the way.

If you’re looking for a fun quick read that’s a tad predictable and involves a hot guy in a wheelchair, this might be it.

Sweet, sexy and short. Perfect as I squeezed in another novel before bedtime. Always impressed when an author can achieve a good story on so few pages. (Also a very good book cover, one that actually relates to the story).

This was a cute and short romance that starts out with an awkward meeting on a plane to Ireland. Lainey is on her way to her brother's wedding, the only problem is that she is terrified of flying. Her solution- get drunk to hopefully forget the whole experience. She ends up sitting next to Xavier on the flight, who happens to be a wheelchair user. But Xavier has been burned in the past when women realize he uses a wheelchair (rude I know 😒) so he is hesitant to tell this quirky woman he has a connection with about his situation.

What a cute novella! I obviously wish that there was more to this story. I feel like it was too short for my liking, and it left me wanting more. But I really liked these characters together and how they helped each other overcome their fears :)

I just also was not a fan, personally, when it came to some of the language used- an example being the heroine thinking she would be a sl*t for going home with Xavier. I just don't like words like that. I also felt like the conflict with Lainey's brother was just uncalled for and a little too violent for me.

This is my first read by this author. This standalone novella is written in first person from an alternating dual POV and ends with a HEA.

Lainey and Xavier meet on the plane to Ireland for her brother's wedding, though they do not realize at the time they are going to the same place. Their interactions on the plane allow them to get to know each other a little bit, and their attraction is instant. I love that Lainey is afraid of flying. I adored Xavier. I appreciated the way the author dealt with his paralysis without making him seem weak. At the same time, she gives the reader an inside look at what that mean for X both emotionally and sexually. I love that Lainey never sees his wheelchair as something that takes away from the man he is. She is perfect for him.

This was a quick read full of heat, romance, and friendship. I can't wait to read more.

Well Avery, that's two!

This story is so touching. Having lived through several conflicts, I am so pleased that I didn't have to have my life changed nor any member of my family. That does not mean I don't know that I was extremely lucky. This story is about someone not so lucky. This man may have already faced his issues and dealt with them when this story took place but it still has it all in the background. This story is about the people with whom he interfaced and their relationship with him.

The Avery I know bases her stories on people she's known. She does her research. She made me feel things I really didn't want to feel. God bless our military men for without them, we would not be here living the lives we lead.

Thank you Avery, for showing us that the possibility of a HEA does not end; you just need to keep going forward until you find it!!!

This book was gifted to me by the author in return for an honest review.

Avery Kingston has done it again!! I loved Plane Love!! Xavier and Lainey had me riveted to me sofa. I laughed and twared up in several parts! You couldn't help but fall in love with these two!!
I loved the banter that Lainey comes up with when meeting Xavier!! Talk about word vomit!! She was so much fun to read. She is the funniest I've read in a while!
I loved seeing the vulnerability of Xavier. I totally want an X for my very own!!
The scene where they see each other at the destination and then the dance scene was the BEST!!! Another scene was where Lainey is reminiscing about her brother that had me laughing out loud!! (I read it to my friend and she said that's what stinky boys do to sisters!!) Made me laugh all over again. Sigh.. I loved the ending.. For such a short read it packs one hell of a story!! I need more from Lainey and X...

What a fun read!!

Who knew that one flight could change your life? Xavier did, one flight, one accident, left him in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. But another flight brought Lainy into his life. Lainy is a spunky, fun red head that hates to fly, but on this flight she meets Xavier.

This is a fun love story, I love how the author handled Xavier's life in his wheelchair, and how his Lainy falls in love with all of him.

I had a friend that married a man in a chair, and everyone asked how she could marry someone in a chair, and she always replies, she never saw the chair. And this story reminded me of that.

Lainey and Xavier are seat neighbors on a plane ride, while they got off on the wrong foot, it all changes and they're not wanting the time spent together end. But, Lainey also doesn't know is X is bound to a wheelchair and these two are headed to the same wedding.

This was a quick, good read. I was wanting more!!!!! I really enjoyed their story. It was really sweet, romantic, fun, steamy and I would definitely recommend!!!!! This was my first Avery book and it will not be my last.

This was short and sweet and pretty darn steamy. I loved the sweet relationship between X and Lainey and watching it unfold was pretty funny.

X referring to women as "chicks" constantly was pretty grating, as were lines like "She didn't wear a shit-ton of makeup to impress like most chicks."

Over all enjoyed it though, definitely worth an hour of your time if you can overlook the sexist tone.

I loved how the characters came together in this novella. It’s written in typical Avery fashion with a vet, a woman who catches his eye, and a connection that’s real. Avery packed a lot in the novella. It’s a very good read. Highly recommend it.

Lovely, well-crafted story. I was concerned that a novella under 100 pages would feel rushed, but it covered everything it needed to for a satisfying read, including a HEA ending. Lainey and Xavier (may I call him, X?) were made for each other. I'd love more stories about them.
