Months after he was mugged in Houston, legal secretary Jasper Barnes is still hiding out in Hidden Creek. Self-defense classes would boost his confidence. Problem is, the guy offering them is Chad Allaback, and he has a reputation, to say the least. So why does Jasper feel an irresistible pull toward him?
Six months after his wakeup call, Chad is too afraid of his past to reach out to those around him in his hometown. Accepting help from Jasper when he finds out he’s about to lose his home is the hardest thing he’s done. Can he really change now?
Self-defense lessons quickly turn into a sizzling, secret connection. When neither man is sure if they can trust their heart to the other, they hit a breaking point all too quickly. It’s going to take a Hidden Creek miracle to heal their scars and find redemption in each other’s arms.
Welcome to Hidden Creek, Texas, where the heart knows what it wants, and where true love lives happily ever after. Every Men of Hidden Creek novel can be read on its own, but keep an eye out for familiar faces around town! This book contains a changed man, gossip text chains, and a sassy twink kissing his unexpected savior.
E. Davies writes feel-good, low-angst romance that never fades to black when the going gets good! Born in Canada, after 16 moves and counting, Ed has finally put down roots in north London.
He emerges from his writing nest to coo over fuzzy animals, flee from cute guys, dance through the streets with his chosen family, put together fierce looks, and—most of all—befriend local flowers.
Serious, heartbreaking and soulful look at an ignored man's life, from his parents and beyond, and what acceptance and caring can do. In addition, another finds his strength. Chad, 27, stayed on in Hidden Creek after his awful behavior and wants to change. He works two jobs, washing dishes and at the gym.
Jasper, 26, has run from Houston after he'd been attacked and robbed, to find peace here, working in a smaller law office. Jasper steps into a conversation and says yes to self defense classes by Chad.
The guys are snarky, but begin to see what the other man is all about. This grows into a slow burn romance amidst each man's troubles.
We see the unforgiving, and how it affects Chad, the needs of each guy, Jasper and Chad, and the comfort they get from each other. One stands up for the other. Chad has never had any tender feeling from anyone before, so he thinks Jasper has ulterior motives, and Jasper keeps waiting for Chad to revert to the way he used to be. Jasper gives him a chance and they find so much more in themselves.
Their slow burn sexy times are wonderful, and the emotions are getting deeper, too. Troubles have each man keeping secrets, which always causes misunderstandings. Several times I just cried for Chad's circumstances.
We watch the redemption, the acceptance, and the forward moving successes. It's terrific to see, and this town can surround a person with exactly what they need. I liked that they used therapy sessions, and were getting professional help, along with good-hearted friends.
Heart wrenching, and then heartwarming, I was happy with this tale. Marvelous epilogue. ENJOY !
I'm going to have to come back to this one after I've read more stories from the series. I had a hard time following along - too many characters with backstories and I'm missing big pieces of the plotline.
I was very curious to see how E. Davies could make me change my mind about Chad after making me dislike him so much in Shelter (from the first season of Hidden Creek). I loved how we got to see Chad from a more compassionate side, and we see him realizing that he wasn’t going down a good path and was trying to change his life around. Chad was made to work for his happiness, both from all the characters in Hidden Creek and from the readers. I liked how his past wasn’t glossed over. This wasn’t a “oh look, I want to write a book about him so like him now”. His flaws and past were spelled out and not ignored, and I found myself surprised at how much I was rooting for him to be accepted. He tried to make things better, and I loved that they gave him a chance for redemption. Jasper was a perfect fit for Chad. His lack of real past with Chad allowed him to go in with less of a filter, but he wasn’t blind to the past. It made him a wise and open hearted character. I loved them together.
Cora was once again so awesome. I just love her.
I am voluntarily reviewing an ARC provided by the author
I’ve enjoyed every book in every season of Hidden Creek. This one is extra special though, not only because it’s by a wonderful author but because it’s so well done and it’s so easy to correlate to real life struggles. If you’ve read the previous seasons you know Chad’s story and if not you can still understand it. It’s so incredibly relatable and so many realistic moments. I love how Jasper and Chad came together. They each had hidden depths, very different challenges and things to overcome but they really showed what can happen-not without hard work and effort and ups and downs, through stormy seas and smooth sailing. But that’s life and live and it all worked just right in this story.
This authors books are always detailed in all the right ways, well balanced and well developed. Strong, emotional, sexy...just all around great! Overall highly recommend this author anytime and loved this series as well!
A beautiful story of redemption and love that has all the feels for me! I loved the tone and pace of this story. I really felt i got to know these MC's and i became invested in their happiness. I enjoyed the depth and scope of the character development and i so enjoyed the supporting friends.
Chad and Jasper both have their issues and they both find new beginnings in this story. These guys will warm your heart and steam up your kindle. Each man finds themselves and i love how their connection grows and becomes so much more, i highly recommend this book!
This is part of the Men of Hidden Creek series and can be read as a stand-alone.
I was gifted this book from the author and i freely give my honest opinion and review.
Another great add to this series. Each season gets better and better. Jasper and Chad are to die for! I love how E. Davies can write great characters that have personal struggles and feel so realistic; that they can learn from their past and grow together. Second chances are needed for these two men trying to start over and connect as friends. Friends turns to more but can they trust their hearts to try again? With a fantastic redemption story you'll feel all the emotions and end with a smile. Can't wait for the next. I voluntarily reviewed an 'Advance Author’s Copy' of this book.
Another good story in this series. I liked it very much, it had some insecurities, love and people’s personalities developing from bad to good.
No unnecessary descriptions of surroundings Good dialogues Secondary characters that helped make the story as good as it could be. Characters is well described and developed in to realistic personalities Good chemistry between Jasper and Chad that was very sweet in the build up of their relationship
Narrator: As always read with feelings and clear pronunciation
Well HIDDEN CREEK is still the best place in Texas! I was surprised by the true Chad. Who knew his life had been so bad. Jasper is just a gem. I fell head over heels for these two characters. I love the way characters from the other books are included but don't overwhelm the current storyline. This is a FANTASTIC series. I love the positivity of this series and the way it helps remove the stigma of getting professional help. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK AND THIS POSITIVE SERIES!!!!!
this book will have you in tears!!! some cause you just can't help the emotions you feel and other because what the characters are saying or doing just has you laughing to tears (until you pee)
my favorite story of the season hands down and hopefully they will continue with more Hidden Creek
sweet sexy with some angst thrown into it.. it made me tear up in spots.. i was so sad.. but then i was happy and it made me laugh.. well written.. amazing characters and the story was fun.
Redemption is part of the Men of Hidden Creek series, a multi-author series with shared characters and a shared setting. The series is set up in Seasons, which reminded me of a Hallmark Channel TV series. Redemption is book 6 of Season 4. However, although Redemption is part of a bigger series, it was very easy to read it as a standalone. I’ve never read a Men of Hidden Creek book before, but I was really interested in the series since a few of my favorite authors write for series. Redemption was very easy to follow as a newcomer to Hidden Creek, but I could definitely tell there was a lot of history behind each character. E. Davies did an amazing job balancing explaining the history of the characters to newbies like me but also building on to this history and giving series fans a treat at hanging out with previous favorite characters.
I really liked Redemption. I thought the plot was well done with a lot of introspection and personal growth for both characters. Chad has been a jerk most of his life, and watching his redemption arch (the title of this book is not subtle) was really touching. He is such a sensitive man who previously internalized the worst of masculine toxicity much to his detriment. Jasper was the brightness and confidence that Chad needed to get his life in order. I love everything about Jasper, from his spunky personality to his amazing professionalism. He was a wonderful character.
Nick J. Russo narrated the audiobook and did a fantastic job with it. I love his voice and how smoothly he can switch from character to character. I had no trouble keeping track of who was talking and easily followed along in the story. The performance was well done and the audiobook was well produced.
I loved Chad but not Jasper I stopped a little after half because apart from Chad, nick, Pete and Kris the rest was annoying me ... I know Chad did bad things but hated that they were like judging who was already in the worst they wanted changes but they themselves were not contributing if it weren't for jasper few would have bothered to look at Chad a second time until it was too late. Jasper pissed me off at first but I soon liked him but then I started to dislike ... Like the guys apparently were his friends although I didn't think he was as close to the gang as he was concerned about their opinion and ... I was upset what was my reason for stopping reading was that jasper despite helping a lot chad looked like he was fixing the dog to be adopted because it looked like he saw chad was not enough and if gabriel didn't want what he would do with chad it pissed me off. And I think it just made me think that Chad isn't in such good hands as the author tries to show us
Redemption is season 4 book 6 in the Men of Hidden Creek series. This is a beautifully written story about second chances given to others and to yourself. Chad has changed himself and is back not really sure what to expect. Jasper has been in need of some self defense training and Chad just so happens to want to teach him. I'm glad Jasper took a chance on Chad despite what he heard about him. I enjoyed watching their relationship grow and the truth come out from both of them. They really are so great together. This is an emotional story with all the feels and I definitely recommend it. Narrator Nick J. Russo does an amazing job. He really brings out the emotions in Chad and Jasper.
3.5 stars’ This was my first Men or Hidden Creek books (and it definitely won’t be my last!) Because it was my first, I didn’t really get to see all the negativity by Chad in the past, and I’m glad for it as I’m not an easy forgiver lol. Instead, I got to see a man who has made bad choices in the past, but is truly repentant about them and is trying to change himself for the better. There was no hiding his past though, and I loved that, as it gave the relationship with Jasper (who knew what had happened) more credibility. Jasper was an amazing character too; who dealt with his own issues and it was all just handled so maturely and wonderfully.
Jumping into this romance without taking note of the overarching series, previous books in the series by Davies or even the current series book order - did leave me in the dark about some of the previous characters mentions throughout, as well as understanding the stigma that Chad carried from previous books (for which I understand he featured heavily as an antagonist). Regardless, I still thoroughly enjoyed this romance between a kin-hearted man who saw the hope in another who was struggling to respect himself and make a happier life.
I really enjoy a gripping story of a main character getting a hold of his life and atoning for all his past mistakes and bullying toward the residents of his town. Chad had hated himself for a long time, hated being gay. His friends were toxic. He cleaned up his act and started giving back and with Jasper's help slowly began making friends again. It was a slow burn beginning with Chad not wanting to treat Jasper like he had treated all the others in his past. But once they got going, they were sizzling. I loved it.
I really felt like I got to know both MC's very well in this story. There was a lot of dialogue between them, a lot of internal consideration, and I was thrilled to see the other side of Chad in this book. E. Davies is a newer author to me and I don't think I've ever given less than a 5 star review. I absolutely recommend this, even if you haven't read any other books in the series.
I felt so sorry for Chad in this book. The author really handled well the trials of someone trying to do better and be a better person in a small town where memories are long. And Jasper feeling so conflicted and being determined to try and give Chad a chance and make up his own mind about him. A sweet story and full of hope and redemption. Highly recommended!
4.75 stars What a wonderful redemption for Chad! I love how he's finally ready to stop being self-pitying and start to be active in the betterment of his own life. And Jasper is a lovely person to help Chad bring about the change in both attitude and actions. What a marvelous wrap to the Hidden Creek stories!
I know it says it’s a stand alone within a series but I hadn’t read the other books and there was a lot of context from their backstories that I asked. Read the other books first.
This story was a good listen! There were all the elements of a great story! The characters were interesting, the plot was captivating and the ending was excellent.
***Major Spoilers*** I don’t usually post this many spoilers, but I could not say what I needed to without them. Apologies all around. *Redemption is now on my top 20 list of favorite books of all time.* I don’t recall seeing Jasper in previous books. He is a good character with a great personality. He is responsible, friendly, and easy to be around. And he is accepting. That last one is the most important one to start with. He gives Chad a chance that no one else will give him. Gives him a bit of trust even though he knows about his past. He treats Chad like a person of quality and leaves the door open for Chad to be more than he was before. He needs Chad to help him with the issues that sent him home to Hidden Creek with his tail between his legs, but that quickly turns into more. Emotionally and physically. And the spicy parts are very well done with lots of sizzle. Mmmmmm. Chad did not make any friends in previous books. He was a horrible character that had no redeeming qualities. Until this author got a hold of him. Chad hit rock bottom, and no one knew. No one except this author. Chad’s hopes and fears were coaxed out of him and put on these pages with little regard for the delicate feelings of the reader, which is as it should be. He deserves the chance to let it all out and breath more freely as the pressure that has built up over the years is released. No matter what Chad did earlier in life, no one wanted him. No one wanted to spend time with him or get to know him. Everyone always wanted him to be someone different — not himself. His parents treated him the same as everyone else and never showed him love, affection, or approval. Everyone has memories of what he was not. Not what he was. He was a good person. But he was pushed away and ignored by everyone. So, he started acting out. For attention and as an f%#* you. So, now he is a pariah. He was friends with someone with just as bad a reputation because he was the only person who would be his friend, and did things to impress this person so that he would continue to be his friend. He was desperately lonely and did anything he could to gain a connection with someone. After he finally hit rock bottom, he made the conscious decision to change. He knew it wouldn't be easy, but he felt it was worth it. And he struggled. Not so much with changing his ways, but with the fact that no one noticed. He was still the pariah. OMG. My heart broke for him over and over. I cried the tears that he was hesitant to shed. The constant pain and defeat he suffered throughout his life scarred him in ways that most wouldn't understand. He has been ignored, belittled, rebuked, and denied his entire life. He is trying to make the necessary changes to improve his life and make himself into someone, by being his true self, that others will like and respect, but it is a constant uphill battle — poor, poor guy. I want to hug him and squeeze him and give him all the love he missed out on over the years. I think this is my favorite book of all the Hidden Creek books because out of all of them; Chad needs this HEA the most. Even Jasper, as good as he is, is secondary to my desire to see Chad finally win. Not grand prizes and applause from all, but respect and acceptance. Respect from within and acceptance that that part of his life is over and he is more now. And the burgeoning respect from those around him, even the ones he hurt the most, which will lead them to accept him as a good person and as an upstanding member of the community. I just teared up again. I do believe that this author has wrecked me. It’s funny, but it’s not. Because for an author to have this impact while reading fiction, good fiction but fiction nonetheless, and still hurting my heart two weeks later says something about the connection that author has to the characters and to the reader. It’s not necessary to read the other Men of Hidden Creek books to understand and enjoy this one, but I liked knowing exactly what happened in those because it made this one all the more heartwrenching as Chad found his redemption in the end. I am having a hard time writing this review because I can't easily communicate the overwhelming pain. I rarely have a lag time between books, but I had to take a break after this one. I needed space to find my balance after such emotional trauma. I hate/love E. Davies for putting me thru this. But, as always… I look forward to more from this author.
Bad boys are all the rage these days, but they’ve never been my favorite. Give me a nice sweet guy any day. That being said, a reformed bad boy? That’s a whole other situation. Chad Allaback is that former bad boy. Clearly he’s got a reputation in town and until about six months ago believed he didn’t care what others thought about him. I’m new to Hidden Creek but I suspect he’s appeared in previous seasons. Many people in town dislike him on sight. Perhaps because he hurt them or, even worse, because he hurt someone they care about. It can be easier to forgive someone who has hurt us then be willing to overlook damage they’ve done to someone else.
That being said, Chad is trying to make things right. He’s been sober since his DUI, is holding down menial job, and is trying to stay under the radar. He occasionally goes into the local bar, but he hangs around near the back and definitely sends off ‘stay away from me’ vibes. But there are little indicators that he might be hiding a sensitive soul. More on that later.
Jasper Barnes has left a great job in Houston to move home to Hidden Creek. He’s told everyone that it’s for a change of pace, but that’s not the whole truth. He needs self-defence training, so it’s pretty clear something bad happened to him in the big city. He’s rekindled friendships and met new people in this LGBTQ-friendly town, but he lives with paranoia. He’s getting help, though, so that speaks to his strength of character. He’s heard of Chad and when the man offers self-defence lessons, Jasper figures this will be a chance to show up the man. What he doesn’t expect is a caring person who helps him confront his fear. What he doesn’t expect is physical attraction. What he doesn’t expect is that he’s coming to care for the former town bad boy.
Not so long ago, someone suggested to Chad that he should, “be the man you want to date.” That advice hit home and he’s been working on himself ever since. But he’s leery of Jasper and his intentions. Chad’s never had someone want to be in a relationship with him so he’s constantly questioning Jasper’s motives. He doesn’t want charity or to be someone’s pet ‘project’. There are several times when Chad’s self-esteem issues threaten to come between them, but Jasper is pretty intuitive and is learning how to read Chad. They form a bond. There are doubting people around town who question why Jasper would want to be with Chad, but many of those questions are put to rest when the men show up together to the ‘grannies and gays’ class at the local gym. Kick ass, grandma.
In the end, Jasper says, “I want it to be just us forever. I want to be by your side and under you and over you. No barriers, no secrets – nothing but the two of us. Raw and vulnerable. I trust us to take care of us.”
Chad replies, “I wish I could find pretty words like that.” But that’s the great thing about relationships – sometimes only one person needs to have the pretty words. As long as both people are willing to work toward happiness, that’s what really matters, right? By the end of the book, though, both men have undergone profound changes – for the better. Made my little romantic heart happy.
Nick J. Russo has narrated this entire season of Hidden Creek and I have to say he did a great job. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed all the books I’ve listened to and Nick played a big part in that. This was a great end to the season and I sure hope there are more to come.
I think I have a serious thing for heartbroken heroes. Chad has definitely pulled so many awful stunts in his life that redemption is more than just a need, it's a soul-deep desire that he finds within himself. I adore how hard he works to change himself, that taking responsibility for his actions sets him on a path to finding love, but more than that, he finds the peace and forgiveness only he can give himself.
Jasper rubs me the wrong way at first, not because of his general personality, but because of his underlying motives for taking Chad on with the self-defense class. I'm always bothered when someone uses other peoples' hate or meanness as an excuse to be just as awful in return. Setting out to hurt someone because they hurt someone you know, and not because you know what actually went down between them, is appalling to me. Thankfully Jasper sees very quickly that, beyond their chemistry, there's something sweet, earnest, and so very vulnerable about Chad. Jasper's own issues throw a wrench in their budding relationship, but at no point does it seem like Jasper is trying to change who Chad fundamentally is, he just has a not-so-great way of helping him which gets painfully misconstrued. It's when Jasper finally becomes honest with himself and others that I truly enjoy him.
Because of Chad I spent most of the book with tears in my eyes. It was a bit much to read his negative thoughts over and over, but I can't deny that I was always moved by it. He was so hurt repeatedly and his self-sabotaging behavior never helped him either, but his yearning for love made him so redeemable for me. Seeing him evolve into someone capable of standing up for himself and others when it really matters, growing to love himself in spite of what he came from and all the bad things he did...it was beautiful.
The relationship was more of a slow-burn in that it took them longer than expected to find themselves more sensually linked. Their thoughts were spicy enough, but when they finally got down to clothing removal, the embers had grown hot enough to set of some serious sparks. In their intimacy they were also able to discover new things about themselves, mainly Chad, and it gave an extra layer of sweetness to his life change. Overall I was so pleased by the story and all the hope that was there carrying Chad and their relationship. There's nowhere safer to find their place in life and in love than in Hidden Creek.
First thought when reading the synopsis on this one: "Holy shit?! They're redeeming Chad??"
And then Chad ends up being the best thing about the book. I found Jasper annoying and the plot dragged. Which meant I got a little bored. But I liked what they did with Chad, so. Points there.
**WARNING :: SPOILERS AHEAD**
My big problem was Jasper is how he treats Chad like a project the whole book, and it's just kind of waved off at the end. Oh sure, it's acknowledged. But nothing really comes from it. And I was irritated with how Jasper's whole reaction to Chad not telling him about moving out is all "me, me, me" why couldn't Chad trust me, why did he lie to me, what does this mean for me romantically?? Not a second at all is devoted to considering Chad, and how Chad is feeling. Chad - who just got evicted, who has been struggling for months to turn his life around, Chad who is used to depending only on himself. Like, asking him to move in with you was not a good solution. It wasn't helpful at all, and it was the only piece of advice he could offer. No help trying to find another cheap place, no asking around to see if anyone he knew had a spare room to rent, asking his bosses to see if they could get some assistance for renters, literally anything else. He didn't even try. He got as far as "I want Chad to live with me despite dating for all of two weeks" and thought no further about the topic. Actually, Jasper's whole attitude towards Chad is kind of iffy for me. It's almost like he views Chad as a project, something to help fix. He starts the whole plot off by agreeing to take classes with Chad just so he can see if the rumors are true and Chad is actually still acting like his old self. It's great that he treats Chad like a human and all, but it's a little patronizing to keep trying to fix Chad's problems for him.
And now, after this whole time of trusting Chad and treating Chad right, Jasper just starts jumping to weird ass conclusions. Like, Chad told you he was getting more hours at work. He told you he didn't want to depend on you and live with you. Calm TF down and stop making this all about you
Good God Jasper worked himself into a frenzy all because Chad didn't pick up his phone a couple times.
And the line about how Jasper's instinct says to trust Chad but literally 20 mins ago he was doomsdaying about all the things Chad had lied about. K.
I found Jasper frustrating, which is the primary for the rounding down.
I love second chance stories. Redemption stories. For those people who truly want to change and make their lives better, they deserve a second chance. Some people truly don't want to change, and it's a hard thing, because you still want to give them the second chance but it's when it's real it's truly deserving. Chad was used to being the town pariah. No one likes him. He didn't exactly blame them. His life before was bad. He's done bad things and even if he didn't do the bad things, he didn't stop them either. Which made him just as guilty. But he realized, himself and through a friend, he didn't want to love that life anymore. A few people gave him a chance to start over. Giving him a job and such. But it wasn't until Jasper that Chad starts to feel like he was maybe getting a bit of a break. But how wrong he was. Things were still falling apart. He felt like Jasper was just using him as a project instead of just loving him for him. Secrets were being kept, and communication was not being used. And it made things rough for a bit. But Chad had to make up his mind, fight for his new life or tuck his tail and run. I felt for Chad in this book. It's hard when you've been one way for so long and are trying to make up for it, but no one trusts you or will give you a chance anymore. Everyone knew him and of his past and if they didn't, it didn't take long to find out. And he raked himself over the coals worse than anyone else could have ever done. His guilt and shame were constant burdens he carried. So when Jasper actually took the time to see Chad and the steps he was trying to take, it made me happy. Until he tried to make Chad a project. Communication was hard with these two and sometimes it just made something simple into something horrid. But they learned to talk better. Learned more about each other and shared the secrets that needed to be shared. Chad got rid of the dead weight of old so called friends and really moved forward. It was a good story. So good. It made me happy to see how it ended. http://lovebytesreviews.com/
