There is never a dull moment in this book — nor apparently in the life of the author. The “horse doctor” mentioned in the title is Dr. Erica Lacher. Together they operate a veterinarian service and clinic near Gainesville, Florida. The variety of stories in this collection will teach you so much about the emergency care of horses and will keep you entertained and amazed by the humour, sensitivity, and commitment of this couple. The book is well-written and easy to understand. The author does a superb job of narrating the audio edition that I listened to. Highly recommended!

Very entertaining book and a quick read. It reminded me somewhat of "All Creatures Great and Small", written by an English veterarian. I gave his books a rating of 5.
I enjoyed his narrative of how he and his wife, Erica, met. Eventually, they have a very unique wedding with everyone dressed in costume! It is very plain from his writing that he respects his wife and loves her very much. But it is the descriptions of her work as a vet that is the heart of this book. He goes out on a lot of calls with her as an assistant, so he observed and participated in the treatments. It's hard work by very dedicated people. The stories are all interesting, some very funny, and others quite sad.
It's a worthwhile read. I noticed he has written a sequal which I will definitely read.

I really enjoyed this book, having worked in a Veterinarian's office. There were really funny stories and some very sad. I like how Justin told the stories in layman terms. It's a short book but very entertaining. I plan to read the second one as well.

As a horse enthusiast without a horse, I enjoyed reading about the experiences of Justin and his veterinarian wife, Erica. While her practice is primarily large equines, there are a cast of animal characters: cats, dogs, camels, pigs and others. Justin's introduction to the "animal life" is recounted from his courtship with Erica to his assimilation as part of the staff. The adventures are humorous, tragic, dangerous at times, enlightening and always a good read.

Adventures of the Horse Doctor"s Husband

Five stars was as high as I could rate but to me 100 stars. I knew a little about horses , my daughter and granddaughter have their own horses. Now they board horses. I laughed, I cried, I prayed for you and your wife during your sad times and cheered you on for happier times. Every one should read this Awesome story. Getting ready to read the next book.

Great book!

I really enjoyed this book. The way you described the vet instruments so I could picture them right along with you as you made those mad dashes to the trailer made me smile at the thoughtfulness of Erica's patient on the job training. Though I seldom read books more than once, this one makes my list.

A rollercoaster ride.

The phrase, "Horse girls, easy to love, hard to afford," is true. Add the professional status of Vet and many a suitor would run away screaming. But this book grows on you, it's not just a man meets a woman. It's the love of animals that comes across loud and clear.

I almost stopped this one 4 chapters in due to a couple of gut wrenching loss stories that were told!

If you loved All Creatures Great and Small you’ll love this! A seemingly unconnected series of horse vet life stories, I felt this book needed a narration that was more expressive. I learned a few interesting things and could relate to a lot of it as a horse owner myself.

Great stories Not so great writing skills.

This is a very interesting book.Really digs deep into the ownership and Life of Horses And a few other animals.I'm going to buy the next book but I hope his writing style has improved a little. He's just almost there but not quite. So I hope he keeps on.

This was a relaxing, enjoyable read. The writer speaks comfortably, dealing with both veterinary topics and his new life. This is not a book that will win a Nobel Prize. It is a book that is a fun and pleasant distraction in a busy life.

Charming

I enjoyed each adventure with laughter and tears. Knowing each were life events happening to an ordinary person. Having had to call a veterinary many times when in the business of raising horses, I now have an idea of the every day life they have.

If you're an actual "horse person", the explanations will become somewhat tiresome. It can't really be helped though as I'm certain the book is intended to be for a broader audience than just horse people.

The message and intent behind the book is a good one, but with a background in veterinary medicine this was really a bit dull. I am glad he loves his wife and her difficult job. If more veterinary clients could appreciate how taxing the job can be, the world would be a better place.

Easy read

I enjoyed the layman's view on a vet's work. Some good descriptions of some emergency work that a vet does without the sterile operating rooms of a clinic, but, out in the fields.

Fascinating look at equine veterinary situations and practice. Not too technical since it is written by a " civilian" !

Entertaining reading

I am a horse person, my husband is not. He has been dragged into many situations that he probably never thought he would be part of. This book reminded me of several of those times. It was humorous and poignant. Looking at the horse world from the eyes of an outsider looking for the door. It was good.

It's ok. Light reading for airport or cabin.

This is really an uncomplicated book easy read. I was expecting a bit more on the equine relationship than adding in a chapter on cats and a motorcycle vacation. Not interested in goldwings. Missed some of the details on showing horses. I doubt I will read the sequel.

Wonderful book

I'm addition to being very well written, the book was a great story in the life of an equine vet. I cried when a horse couldn't be saved and felt the pain of the owners. The funniest part was the adventures with the donkeys! I laughed out loud at the story about getting the donkey into the horse trailer. Also, I could just imagine the little old lady who found the pig in the bathroom! This was one of the most enjoyable reads I've had in a while. Thanks and I look forward to the next book.

Okay--I'll just say it--I was so disappointed in this book. Expectations were that it was all about horses--and a vet who cares for them. The chapters that were about that were good. But many chapters were about kittens, and vacation, and circus animals, and looking at the stars. Those are good topics, but NOT in a book that is supposed to be about horses.

And since I've had a lot of experience with horses--the parts about foaling were what I've done--very basic. I wanted to learn new things, to read about situations I haven't experienced. The best chapters, to me, were the ones where the author drove his wife to horses who needed her care. That's what I wanted the whole book to be about.

And I'm wondering who edited this book. There are too many details. Not every moment needs to be added. My gosh---I almost quit reading, but one of the best chapters was at the very end--about Thanksgiving--because there were the most horse visits in that one.

Enjoyed every episode.

The telling of these adventures was with humor and care, for the animals and humans alike. Having read "All Creatures Great and Small", I had high expectations and this collection of stories held its own. I grew up with horses, some sheep, chickens and an assortment of cats, dogs, a pair of ducks and a rabbit. Later I managed a horse boarding facility and related to many of the risks and disasters that animals and their owners endure with devotion and stoicism. 'Loved the telling and his point that horse people form bonds that run deep. I still miss my favorite horse. I highly recommend this insightful and humane read about the joys and stresses of sharing our lives with animals. He and his wife sound like a great team to place their trust in, house calls and all.
