Find Wonder in the Ordinary is a journey back to your inner child. Back to when everything in life was new and fascinating. Through the author's writings and whimsical drawings, you are reminded how to find the wonder within ordinary things...and beyond. This book is a guide, or as the writer states, "it's more like a drinking buddy." It's a companion that will definitely change how you see the world. In other words, it's a kids' book for adults.
This book is a refreshing, uplifting story that refrains from becoming preacher-y or soapbox-y. I would say it’s an emotional reminder of how our childhood experiences and our Memories can resonate with us through adulthood. This book brought a feeling of nostalgia and whimsy, both through the illustrations and the pop culture references. I was able to sit outside on a beautiful Summer afternoon in Central New York while reading this book and it was a great reminder to stop and smell the flowers.
The chapter about Change and how the author relates it to the seasons was introspective and enlightening, struck a chord with me as most of my biggest life changes have happened in the Fall.
I enjoyed the author’s take on religion and Faith, I think many people will be able to relate to these feelings of being at peace in nature (hence the outdoor reading).
Monkey, monkey, monkey - you’ll need to read it to understand :)
On the technical side, this book is a quick, easy read with smooth chapter transitions.
This book is very relatable on multiple levels and I strongly encourage everyone to give it a read! (If swearing bothers you, ask someone to color out the swear words first.)
This book put a lot of things into a new perspective for me. I think for most of my life my mind was so occupied with other things I didn’t think about the wonder in the ordinary. I truly enjoyed reading this, it was so well thought out and executed. The illustrations were wonderful and so positive. I feel lighter after reading it, like there’s so much good in the world that people don’t see often and I’m grateful to Bernie Freytag for writing such a book. You feel as though he’s telling you these things in a conversation, it’s a very pleasant read. I would absolutely recommend this!
Bernie Freytag calls his collection of ramblings and doodles a Children’s Book for Adults. It is so much more! His chapters are self contained memories, musings, and observations that remind us to find the wonder within ordinary things. Eloquently written, they’re amusing, enlightening, and often thought-provoking. Together, they provide even deeper meaning.
