THIS IS A SHORT STORY....Free to join our news release letter - digital copy onlyNoted for her rich story construction and excellent detailed plots, Kee Patterbee's mystery writing centers on traditional female detective tropes but with original, modern twists. She produces protagonists that are a nod to the hard-boiled noir private eyes while avoiding the trappings found in much of modern private eye fiction.Patterbee's main protagonist, a former FBI agent turned culinarian named Hannah Starvling-Miles, is a genius, leaving her to view the world on a different level. She interviews interacts and interprets those involved in a case. Along the way, the reader becomes privy to her thoughts' and how Hannah assesses and categorizes suspects, even if they are long-term acquaintances, good friends, or family. But this methodology is only half the story. Hannah has a knack for trouble. While she often pushes forward with abandon, she is never alone. Her best friend Cate is never far from hand to aid in her adventures. Her husband Hymn always has her back. And her grandparents, Gran and Jayland are on hand to make some mischief. In this short story, we travel back to the origin of Hannah and her adventures. This is where the characters first emerged. Early versions of Hannah and all of Patterbee's familiar reoccurring characters - Hymn, Cate, Al, Papa Jay, Gran - along with several new characters, work their way through an adventure that is equal parts mystery, a ghost story, and a treasure hunt all delivered in a short and sweet format. In THE UNEXPECTED GUEST, Hannah Starvling-Miles, along with her new husband, Hymnal 'Hymn' Miles, throw a dinner party. After purchasing a historic four-story building in downtown Twilight, they have finished renovating the upper floors as a residence. But while the newlyweds are just getting started in life, their new residence is not. It has a long, dark, and mysterious past tied to shady characters and unexplained happenings. Now with an encroaching storm coupled with the unexpected appearance of a psychic for the festivities, things take a turn for the strange. Now Hannah's intended celebration has turned into her next mystery. A legend of missing jewels. Hidden rooms and secret passages. Voices from the past and questionable characters in the present.Working her way through the winding path of the building's past, her guests complicate the investigation. Twin paranormal investigators. A compelling young man. The former owners. Her grandparents. Her best friends. An attorney. A lawman. And a psychic. What could go wrong? Now she must find the answers to two questions:1. Is there a hidden treasure somewhere in her new home?2. And why did the guest see death before dessert?

This is the second book in a series and it definitely should not be read before the first book. I had no idea what was going on. There are a whole bunch of characters all introduced at the beginning but I had no context to remember them. This is a short story mystery. There isn't enough story to build any suspense or create a climax to the story. I started to get interested about half way through when the story focused on the current mystery. It was okay but perhaps would be better if I'd read the first book. I received a free copy of this book from an author giveaway but that did not influence my review.

This is a short story with a mystery that involves characters from the series. Since I haven't read the first book it was a bit difficult to understand who was who initially. But as the story progressed I was involved in the plot.
Now, time to read book 1 and know more about Hannah. She's an interesting character and seemed like someone I'd love to know more.
