Four Guys. Three Immortals. Two Witches. And one baby Alpha. We got problems in the best possible ways.
Welcome to the third semester of Bloodwood Academy, where crap is about to go down. I barely scooted through the last few months, and now one woman struts into my life and sends everything into disarray.
We have trouble, starting with the fact that our new addition is ready to start a war.
Bloodwood Academy Semester Three is a full-length Reverse Harem romance with no end to snark, twisted sheets, and with a snarky heroine, shirtless men, love scenes that will send you swooning, and no end to pulsing… muscles.
I just couldn't keep reading past (not passed) chapter 9 due to my disappointment in the main character's lack of, well character. I just can't get on board with a woman who lets herself be drawn to a emotionally, verbally and sexually abusive asshole when she has other men who treat her decently. Some women who read this book may have self esteem problems and think it's okay to not value themselves so I just can't condone the way the female protagonist is drawn to a lying creep who, as of chapter 9, appears to have no redeeming qualities. Also I'm offended by the constant use of the "c" word to describe a woman's character. I don't even like it as a word for female anatomy let alone used as a derogatory description a woman's character. Smarten up your writing and maybe I'll read your future works. Give your female characters more brains, courage and self esteem. show women they are worthy of being treated well and with respect!
This book is the perfect example of why I don’t read incomplete series. Holy cliffhanger Batman!!! When the book ends, life for all the MCs as they know it is about to end. I need to know what happens next and how a HEA could ever be possible for Ivy. Can’t wait to see Selene and Nicki brought down and Ivy come into her powers, save the day and go be happy with her men.
Well what can I say....for a super being that other pack and the witches are slipping from them too often. I was so excited that her mum came back in the last book but it turns out she's a real cow, not that Ivy is much better. Ivy seems very boring and her men aren't that great either. Trying to find something to like in this one really.
The Bloodwood Academy Shifter Semester 3 by Rae Foxx
TLDR: This is a SOLID addition to the Bloodwood Academy Shifter series. If you enjoyed previous books about Bloodwood Academy, or like paranormal RH romance, explicit sex, and a great story, READ THIS SERIES.
ARC: I received a copy of the ARC in exchange for an honest review. I also purchased (preordered) the book.
Release date: November, 2019
Technical stuff: This story is a paranormal, fast-burn, reverse-harem romance. There is explicit sex in the story line, including MM, as well as a fair amount of NSFW language. These are not gratuitous, but part of the flow of the story. There is some violence which may be triggering for some (bullying in school, by headmaster, and by one former lover). If these may trigger you, then perhaps this isn't the book for you.
The story is told in first person, from the FMC, Ivy’s, perspective. There is a cliff-hanger ending in the overarching story line with of this book. It stands alone as a story, but a fair amount of nuance may be missing if you have not read The Bloodwood Academy Shifter Semester 1 and 2.
Opinions and overview of story (with minimal/no spoilers): After you read an amazing book (or a couple of books in the series), you always have the niggling worry that the next book won’t be as good. Don’t worry: Semester 3 is a worthy sequel. There are (slightly) fewer sex scenes: the intensity and complexity of those scenes has increased, and the “hotness” of the sex scenes remains unequalled. There is the introduction of MM scenes in this book, which is done respectfully (and presented in a beautiful way) in favor of character development—which, like everything else Rae Foxx writes, is done masterfully. I definitely enjoyed the story, the sex scenes are fun and hot, the emotions and relationships feel authentic. I definitely recommend reading this book.
Previous books/backstory: *PREVIOUS BOOK SPOILERS* Ivy comes from the wrong side of the tracks, even for a human. She finds out that she’s more than human, though, and is whisked off to Bloodwood Academy as a Shifter. She finds out that there are Fae, Witches (female and male), Vampires, and Shifters. Ivy is informed by the headmaster, Nicky, that there is one absolute rule: No relationships outside of your “species” of magic. Children of such unions are slaughtered. Ivy being Ivy… rules don’t mean much. Enter the Fae prince, Finn. (pun intended) And then Saxon, a powerful vampire, proclaiming Ivy a blood queen.
Nicky and many students inform her that she is slightly more welcome than something you’d scrape off your shoe. Bullying begins with the Headmaster’s implied consent, and Ivy, tough as titanium, endures and even thrives.
The “peeping Tom” witch Librarian who can replicate herself gives Ivy a book teaching her that it used to be common to have a reverse harem, and the rule of no cross-magic relationships is something relatively new.
Pater, the Alpha for all shifters in the area and the Nicky are set to perpetuate a dynasty by marrying Pater’s son, Howl, to Nicky’s niece, Selene. Only problem is that Howl is Ivy’s True Mate. Selene challenges Ivy for Howl, and loses badly. Pater intends to keep them apart; he threatens to rape Ivy to death, and tortures Howl. Through one thing and another, Ivy finds out that she is being used as “bait” to bring her parents (her father, specifically) to the school for reasons unknown, but probably not friendly reasons. Ivy is abducted and is nearly sacrificed in an evil magical rite. Ivy and her mates must help her escape.
There is another fight in which Pater is carried away by his supporters when it becomes clear that Ivy is going to win. Ivy’s shifters move into the house that she is entitled to as the new Alpha. Ivy faces some “growing pains” as an Alpha. Danvers is introduced as helping the smaller shifters become better fighters through some bizarre dance. Ivy is less than completely persuaded that Danvers is on their side, but lets the training go on.
Ivy is learning to use and control her magic. Tommy reappears as a voyeur, unbeknownst to Ivy and her mates. Ivy also has another voyeur who reports her magic to Pater. Tommy keeps asserting himself as a mate to Ivy, and her other mates do all they can to keep him away from Ivy. At one point, Ivy and her mates overhear Danvers and Tommy talking, and the harem and Ivy become very suspicious of them both.
After the magic comes to light, Pater abducts his son Howl, one of Ivy’s mates, and tortures him and the rest of Ivy’s shifter pack. Selene has made herself available to be a sexual partner with Pater. When Ivy realizes what’s happening, she and Tommy, a demon and her ex-lover, come to the rescue. Ivy and Pater fight for the leadership of the shifters. Pater asserts her claim as alpha has no standing since she has magic at her behest. Pater offers to let her pack go if he can fuck her. Ivy is having none of it, and winds up depending upon Tommy to help her and her shifters to escape. Ivy and her harem are essentially driven out of the school, and take refuge in caves near the school.
Howl has been badly hurt, and struggles with blaming Ivy for not being there when this all went down, and grateful that she did show up—recognizing that emotions make no sense and are complicated in relationship. Semester 2 ends with Ivy’s Mama showing up clean, clear-headed and powerful, chasing and berating Tommy.
Always so much action in these books. I love that Ivy got to meet the mothers of two of her guys. I am a little curious about why everyone keeps reacting so oddly to Alias. I am hoping there are some answers in the next book. As for that cliffhanger... why? I really hate cliffhangers! LOL
Tommy is a horrible character but no one tells him to go to hell. He’s verbally abusive to Ivy all the time but her mates do nothing. Her mother is also a terrible person, spending her time belittling her own daughter. She’s supposed to be a powerful witch but had her memory and personality completely erased ? Are you kidding me ? I quite liked Ivy in the beginning of the series but the more I read the more she becomes stupid and only has time to have sex. She is no Alpha that’s for sure.
you got me, you totally got me! This book had me hooked from the beginning. With ever page you are wondering how ivy and her guys will get through whatever obstacle they are faced with...and did I mention the sex? Because it is magnificent! I will be (not so) patiently waiting for the last book!
Not great. Was actually getting frustrated for Ivy. Nobody’s helping her figure out how to use her new powers. If she does use them they tell her it’s about time. Help the poor girl out. She’s known less then a year she’s a shifter and a super witch. They all expect great things with her, but she’s not getting the assistance she needs to be the best she can be.
This book was intense. I can't believe her mom is back but I do't trust her at all. I don't know what will happen in the next one. This is a fast paced book that keeps you on the hook the whole time. LOVED IT!!
Between the steadiness of the harem, the arrival of mommy dearest, the lies uncovered, and the fights that ensued....I think my jaw stayed pretty much on the floor. This was the best yet!
Gah! God Bless America! Why did it have to end there? Ugh I can't handle it...all that build up and BAM.. face meet cliff. So wonderfully intense and action package and convoluted and hot. I need more.
I didnt think it was possible for these books to get better and better, but they do. The characters are well written and have a life of their own. And all the really steamy stuff was hotter than before. I cannot wait for the next in the series. Another awesome job!
SYNOPSIS (of 4 Book Series): This series is set in the modern world but there is no little reference to humans and supernaturals just seem to live with them but unknown to them. The FC (Ivy) is brought up in a trailer park, abandoned by her father, left with a druggie mother and a deadbeat boyfriend. She discovers she is a shifter by accident and is then given a scholarship to attend a supernatural academy. It is there that she finds out she is not just a shifter and her parents were not just deadbeat humans. The story arcs over 4 books where the FC and the MCs (wolf, fae, vampire & demon) try to prevent Ivy being taken and killed or used as a sacrifice to end the world. There is an (almost complete) HEA. To fully complete the story you would need to read a fifth book.
If you like pure smut and crudity as opposed to romance then this is a series for you. In fact the series should be under porn more that NA. This is definitely one of those series where I do not understand the amount of 5 star reviews. Whilst Book 1 makes you think the series might be good, the remainder quickly dispel that illusion. There is no way this series is close to 5 star.
The series is written and edited well although there are some annoying editing issues which need to be corrected - wrong words used, missing words, sentences that don’t make sense etc. - but not sufficient to really impact the flow. The issue I had was with the style and the content.
Book 1 starts off with a sex scene which sets the mood for the remainder of the series which, in my view, has far too many sex scenes which just ramble on. The sex scenes in Books 1&2 are hot enough 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ but, for me, soon transition into being too crude to be sexy and hot, too many and too long. By Book 5 they more gratuitous than enjoyable and just boring. The scenes quickly move into double penetration; A$$; bondage and then A$$ licking which, for me, is not romantic and just crude and crass. I enjoy hot, spicy and well written scenes. That was not the case with these. e.g. Need to save the world? Oh, let’s have a quick (20 pages) sex scene. “He’s already fu*&ed me everywhere I can be fu*&ed”; “Let me smell your c*&t” - yes, that’s so romantic. The writing and scenes jarred and I ended up skipping them.
As for the main characters, I enjoy a badass, cool and snarky heroine but this FC is one that quickly moves from strong and snarky to crass, over the top and just cringe worthy. She’s weak, stupid and not someone anyone would follow. The MCs are cardboard cutouts. Within barely 5 minutes of meeting the MCs the FC is screwing two of them (together) and with one, before she even finds out his name. There’s absolutely no background given on the MCs, no build up as to attraction between them or attempt to create any kind of relationship or connection. Just an immediate jump to sex and “my mate”. It means that the story lacks depth and is simply a series of sex scenes woven together by a loose and confusing story. The MCs do not come across as strong - one is even described as shaking in fear on several occasions - and you don’t get much physical description so it’s hard to visualise each. I’m not sure you even get the surname of some of them!
As for the Demon MC, that storyline is a joke. He is beyond unlikeable especially with his history with the FC and to have him as one of the FC’s mates was the last straw for me. He calls her a Bitch, a C*nt and talks down to her as if she is an idiot (not that the FC is the brightest bulb in the pack) and is incredibly patronising e.g. “You are stupider than a steaming pile of shit on the street” - nice.
This could have been a really enjoyable series. Ironically the author can write and the base story started decently enough but it was ruined by crass OTT sex scenes every five minutes, an annoying heroine and MCs who were pathetic and weak. Add in plot gaps - how did Nicky amass an army? Who is Nicky and why were people following her? What happened to Selene’s father and Selene? Why wasn’t Nicky killed sooner? What was the point of Pater? Kalensa’s story makes little sense - if she died when she made Oberion how/when did she also make fae and vampires? Where did all the hybrids come from - and the list continues
By Book 3 even the half way decent story (what there is of it) started to descend into the ridiculous. The FC is such an idiot that there is no way she would be seen as a leader or saver of the world and her MCs are equally as weak and pointless. The fact that the author still had the characters attending a school where the main villain was the headmistress (not headmaster as the author insists on calling her) and was still present makes no sense nor does the headmistress expelling the FC and MCs. The multiple fight scenes that seem to achieve nothing except to show the FC as incapable are confusing - one minute the FC and her pack are winning then they’re not, then they are, then there are witches that can defeat everyone but the FC’s mother is super powerful but apparently does nothing and the FC is super powerful but can’t fight back…. I almost threw my kindle against the wall midway through Book 5 the book was just so badly written.
It started a bit slow for me but then it started to pick up momentum. Then this story was making me more angry which I'll explain. The ending ended on a good cliffhanger but I am not rushing to read the next book.
So I'm about to go on a rant. I can't stand Tommy. I don't think Ivy likes him either except when he brings out his massive demon dong. I hate how he talks to her. He calls her stupid and calls her a bitch. I don't think he's redeemed himself.
Everyone is so G-D terrible to Ivy. It's tiring how much you get hit over the head how everyone thinks she's a trailer trash dolt who only is good at spreading her legs and is out of her depth. It is infuriating that one of her mates basically has the same attitude towards her. Yes her three other mates are on her side and so is Scarlet but from the beginning evryone else is so obvious in their hate that it's annoying.
Then you have her mother who is terrible. She is constantly rolling her eyes at Ivy and when Ivy does something good she has to be "about time."
I can forgive her for being a shit mom when she was being fed off a demon but the fact that she is naturally a bitch and awful to her daughter while not being under a magical influence makes me wish she would get killed off. You would think she would be doing everything she could to be a good mother now since she missed Ivy's childhood. Also you would think she would be sympathetic to the fact she didn't grow up knowing what she was capable of and would need some guidance instead of treating her like a dimwit.
I might read the next book but only because I am in it this far so might as well see it to the bitter end.
Disappointing!!! DNF at 59% (with a lot of skip-reading before that already)
The story itself has gone to pieces, it seems the author has completely lost the plot with everything just becoming totally twisted and convoluted without any real game plan or direction.
*Also, this book should come with a trigger warning for M/M content, which I'm really not into*
This is supposed to be a fun, relaxing read and since it stopped being that I'm moving on. Won't be reading anything by this author again any time soon, that's for sure.
I really wanted to like this book and honestly it's probably more of a 3.5 than a solid 3 but... I just can't handle the illogical nature of the characters' decisions. Honestly it's so frustrating that I'm not even going to finish the end of the series. Based on their previous actions , there's absolutely no way they can win. I hate her mom. I hate the Fae queen. All the people that should be helping her to become more, to become better are nothing now than shitty, irrationally angry people. It makes absolutely no sense. The chosen one is supposed succeed with no training, no previous knowledge, no support. I give. I skipped through the massive sex scene because... We need to prep for war but... sex oh and the person we needed to detain... gone during our sex free for all. It wasn't that I expected this to be a greatly in-depth book. The previous stories haven't set it up to be anything more than a quick fun read but I just can't move past the ridiculousness. I wanted to see it through but the buck stops here for me.
While this book (and the series itself) has a great story line, there were many things that I did not like.
The first of which being that even though it said it is Reverse Harem, it didn't mention in the description that it is M/M. I know that is becoming quite popular in RH books, but I personally don't have any interest in it and tend to not read books with M/M scenes, so it definitely would have been nice to know before reading, instead of a surprise halfway through the book.
Another thing is how Ivy did a complete 180, becoming extremely dominant in sex scenes, demanding what they do to her and each other. It didn't follow along with the other two books. I began losing interest at that point and will only read the next simply because I have already read through three of them and would like to know how it ends.
2.5⭐️ I enjoyed the first two books in this series even though the heroine has always been a touch on the immature side. However, after 3 books into the series, it’s becoming a little frustrating that her level of growth is still so shallow. I enjoy a harem as much as the next gal but maybe if she’s the supposed savior of the world, she might should take at least a minute to ask some basic questions and/or train her inherent magic rather than continue to just hope it bursts forth under duress at the exact right moment. Maybe? Just me? Ugh. I’ve enjoyed up until now, but I need some storyline progression that isn’t the equivalent of Scooby Doo and Shaggy. I almost didn’t make it through to the end of this one, but I am willing to give the series one more chance to dig in to something worth sticking around for.
I really like the story of this book so I'll probably read the next one to see how it ends, but I hated this book. I feel like everyone was just soo rude to Ivy, and they couldn't catch a single break. I'm all for action packed books that keep you on edge but when there is literally no happy moments or wins it just gets frustrating to read.
I HATE Tommy, Im really disappointed they made him the 4th mate, he treats her like absolute garbage and she just lets him but then is so turned on by him that she still sleeps with him..? Its hard to read where the FMC was a bada** and took no sh*t to being ok with constantly being called a b*tch and how stupid she is by her mate.
This book took a turn I wasn't expecting. There were so many twists, it honestly just confused things and didn't add to the story. There was m/m action which in not in to. Also need a trigger warning for some folks. I'll finish the series, just because there is only one more book. This ends in a huge cliffhanger. Glad the final book is out. Ivy makes some stupid decisions, but everyone is on her case about not knowing anything, but no one is telling her what she needs to know either. So many characters keeping things to themselves. I still don't like Tommy and I sure don't like her mom. This book was a pieced together mess. On to the last book.
I could not go through any more of this book. After the second book in this series, I discovered, everything you need to know is at the beginning and the end of her books. I am only getting the next one to see the ending because her plot line is really good. It’s just the execution that leaves a lot to be desired. There are a lot of sex scenes but they are not interesting and gave very little to do with the story. At this point I expected the author to decide Ivy was part succubus. I am only giving this book 2 stars because the plot had potential. Otherwise it would have gotten only one star.
In this third book of the series we learn more about Ivy and Why Nicky wants her blood, Ivory is hardly any help at all and acts like ivy should know everything Despite Her having grown up with a snack head low life mother or Witch Bitch Still not sure how I feel about Tommy. we do get to meet fins mother who is Queen of the Fae and slightly insane . I do feel as though Saxon needs more background as we know Tommy back story Howls story and now Fins. All we know of Saxon is he is a vampire who loves books ....
Didn’t finish unfortunately. Ivy fell for someone (her ex, who turned out to be an actual demon) who spent years literally sucking her magic away and treating her like crap. No thanks. Like others in this genre, it went from a somewhat interesting storyline to a bunch of sexual encounters and poor decisions on the part of the heroine. 3 stars just because I at least managed to make it to book 3.
I have mixed feelings about this book. I can't really put my finger on it but there was something about this part that just made me feel like it was filler rather than a streamlined piece working to bring us further into the mystery. I just didn't get the "I can't put it down, I have to find out what happens next." feeling. It is still a good book and overall, the series is a good one!
To be completely honest I did not finish this book. I found the demon edition to be ignorant, rude abusive I could go on and on and on but what's the point? It's through the tone of the entire series right off kilter. I don't want to read it anymore. I'd love to hear from other people that have read the entire series and hear what you have to say. But the addition of the demon and the witch mother.. I don't know I just don't want to read anymore.
So not all was what it seemed and poor Ivy. That girl hasn’t had it easy from day one and with a huge cliffhanger like that. Think it’s about to get ugly but damn we on a ride of a lifetime. Ivy is bringing everything to this book, she’s been gullible and having her sweet, caring side taken advantage of but she’s also fierce and loves well. Also was expecting the mm so guys be prepared that this serious is getting filthy 😜
Bummed that this story got repetitive and a little dull. I thought this was the last book but there is another one. Not sure if I will get to that next book anytime soon. The lack of answers from key characters just make the story frustrating to keep up with. Bummed this has deteriorated as much as it has.
