Coming back home for his brother’s wedding feels a little like dying, too. Nothing to do but fight with his parents and walk around a derelict town square. Nobody to do, either - Grindr isn’t really a thing in tiny, southern hamlets.
Until Jack.
Six years ago, Trevor saved Jack from a gang of bullies.
Jack was adorable - but way too young for him.
Now he’s all grown up, with all the same nerdy charm that fascinated Trevor as a teenager.
Just one problem: Trevor doesn’t do commitments. And his little Jack-in-the-Closet? Well, he doesn’t do one night stands.
Doubt is the first book in the Virtue & Vice series, but it can also be read as a standalone novel! This book was previously published under the title Commitment and has been re-edited for release.
Trevor is near finishing his Masters Degree in Psychiatry at Rose State in Oklahoma. He has just told Austin, his friend with benefits, that he doesn’t want to hook up with him any more. He still misses his roommate Jackson who he had a crush on, but Jackson had rejected him and gone to work overseas. It’s now the end of the semester and he is reluctantly going home for a week for his brother Samuels wedding.
He left home 6 years ago following graduation from High School for college and never gone back to his small hometown in Pinton,Tennessee. The main reason for his absence was his family’s rejection of him as a gay man. His mother an ardent church goer refused to believe her a son of hers was homosexual. Plus it would ruin her reputation with her church , friends and neighbours. He would attend only for his older brother’s sake.
Jack 22 is a Librarian in Pinton’s small underfunded Library since leaving college. He lives alone in his family home since his parents were killed in a road rash a few years ago. His only acquaintances are the Head Librarian/Pastor and two octogenarian volunteers. He has a lonely existence. He has untested feelings about his sexuality and there is no one ‘out’ in this small for him to meet with even as friends.
Both these guys had fateful meetings in the town square the day Trevor arrived. Jack is approached at the fountain by an ex colleague, Robin. She invited him to her wedding with Samuel later in the week. Surprised and speechless he found himself saying “yes”.
Trevor arriving home and his mother Immediately starting on him again, he left the house and walked round the town square where he was found by a stray dog.
This stray Dog came to be the catalyst of what would happen during the following weeks.

First time reading book by these authors and enjoyed the story, liked the two MC’s especially Jack when he ‘woke up’ after meeting his ‘hero’ from High School.
Not much angst here really, except from Trevor’s mother, and the initial altercation Jack suffered through High School jocks.
It was a quick read through a stormy, wet and windy Saturday.
When you just know, without out a doubt, but with a dog
Families are important but complicated. Parents want the best for you, but sometimes their love gets twisted back with their dreams and desires that ignore your wants and needs. The things and people that you love are usually different than your parents.
Once your parents are gone, memories begin to fog into the mists of time. What they might have wanted for you may not seem to be as important as your memories of them and what they loved. You need someone to love, be it dog or cat or that special person in your life. Or all of them.
Being together is important, but sharing memories and adventures is important, too. Time spent together is never wasted if you savor those who you love.
A low angst (with the exception of Trevor's awful, homophobic mother), cute read.
Trevor is a commitment-phobe (could have done without his sex scene with someone else opening the book), who returns home after 6 years for his brother's wedding. Trevor has been avoiding his narrow-minded small town and those who judge him for being gay. Although in fairness, his mother is the absolute worst out of the entire town!
Jack is a loner. An orphan from childhood, he's all but raised himself (he had to teach himself to cook as a child as his guardian aunt was out most of the time 🤷♀️) and he stays in his small town, where he's basically invisible, as he hangs onto the memories of his parents (I found his to be a sad tale).
The pair connected briefly in high school when Trevor saved Jack from bullies. Now, they reconnect when Trevor befriends a stray dog and his mother won't let Dog stay in the house and if he goes to the shelter, he'll only have 10 days to find a home before he's put to sleep 😱 (Didn't I say his mom was horrible?!)
And so the pair temporarily live together where they get to know each other and Trevor introduces Jack to all his 'firsts'. But what happens when Trevor has to go back to school? Will Jack be brave enough to leave the only home he's known?
I enjoyed Doubt. It was an easy read with some cute moments. It wasn't outstanding but it was enjoyable and I liked it enough that I'll most likely read the next book in the series (different MC's).
I liked how the beginning of the 1st chapter and epilogue nearly mirror each other but for very different reasons. Trevor, whose in his masters degree for psychology, does not do relationships and in the beginning of this books breaks it off with one of his regular hook ups whose getting too attached. Trevor returns home has some family drama, finds a stray dog, and runs into Jack who he a history with. Jack works at a library and has never left town. He is quiet and tries to remain in the background. In the past he was saved by Trevor from bullies. When Jack sees Trevor again he is hesitant in getting close because their small town is conservative and Trevor is not staying for long. However when Trevor is in need of help to take care of the dog, Jack grows closer to Trevor and let his wants take over. The relationship is perfect yet it has a time limit. Trevor decides he wants to be with Jack even if they will have to work on a long distance relationship for awhile and is tired of the constant no strings sex. Jack wants to be with Trevor but doesn't seem how when he doesn't see himself as good looking nor thinks he can leave his parent's home. Trevor left after Jack pushes him away and it is thanks to Dog that they were able to win Trevor back. I loved how they were a family at the end the surprise of the future for them.
Ah, the self-absorption of youth. Trevor, is a commitment phobe. He is content having one nighters or if possible. A fling, Austin suggested he examination why as a thesis for his psychology degree. His brother, Sam invited him home to his wedding to his fiancee, Robin. Trevor, avoided home because the town was small and conservative enclave. Jack, was bullied in school when he was younger. He seems not to have supportive guidance helping him figure out who he is as a youngster. He carries heavy baggage along with his low self esteem. When they meet up during the time of the wedding, they enter a relationship over the stray, Dog/Dobby. Trevor sees Jack as someone who needs to explore outside his comfort zone. I really struggle to like Trevor with the clear understanding he is still maturing and finding himself personally and considering his career asperations. Does Trevor break down Jack's walls? Do they keep Dog/Dobby? Does Jack ever leave Pinton? Does Trevor find a balance with his family? Will trevor make a good therapist? Interesting story. Well done! I wasn't sure with them being college age but this story turned out adorable. High school football player basically saves town shy introvert freshman from probably being raped. Or at least abused big time. High tables it out of town as soon as he graduates and come out to his family just before he heads to college. Mean while shy introvert floats through high school but doesn't get away because he doesn't know a better way of life. He just exist. They meet up again when Trevor come home for his brother wedding. Jack who hasn't experience any thing in life falls into his own reality when Trevor make him a deal. He stay with him for the wedding and goes as his plus 1. Life in a small town seems to get in the way and Jack is afraid of what his future hold foe him once Trevor heads back to school. But life also has a way to work out if you want something bad enough.
One that doesn't do hook-ups. The other doesn't do one-night stands. Quite a pair for two men headed for a happily ever after.
Trevor saved Jack from bullies. When they see one another again, Jack is hesitant. Small conservative towns will make you reluctant to be your true self. Both manage to find a way to be together. Unfortunately there are a few bumps in the road. Having a long distance relationship and reluctance to move out the parent's home. Ironically, no strings intimacy is becoming an issue. Ultimately, the are pushed apart and it takes a furry best friend to being them back together.
Sweet, spicy and fun romance.
