Frank, who recently lost both parents, has become a guttersnipe. Barely able to eke-out adequate food to sustain him, he lies about his age to join the new Union Army. Shortly after the Civil War’s first battles, Frank’s cut off from his regiment and finds himself behind enemy lines – in almighty trouble. A group of entrepreneurial strumpets save his life by taking him in and disguising him as the daughter of their madam. This story occurs mainly in the 1860s. Given the times, some of the language is very offensive and racially, hell-fired wrong.
This is a civil war story with several interesting twists. Frank is raised as a girl by his mother until he's 11, then a few years after he has "broached" wearing pants and living as a boy, he is orphaned and joins the Union Army in hopes of regular meals and boots. Of course he is still small and frail and even the smallest boots are 2 big.
After getting lost behind enemy lines and nearly dying, Frank wakes up to find he is now minnie, the 11 year old daughter of a Madam and her traveling brothel. Unfortunately, for the Confederate army.
The story has lots of adventure, romance, and war history. What makes this story unusual is the unusual political views, in the colorful vernacular of the time, warts and all.
The racist language is offensive to a 21st century reader, but probably did reflect the thinking and writings of the mid-19th century before and during the Civil war.
Some of the medical information was probably more fantasy than actual history, but it did make the story more interesting and plausible.
Another well-written novel by Angela. Very well researched. (The only glaring historical error was a character talking about the 54 th Mass Regiment in 1861 , 2 years before it was formed) Although, I'm a. History teacher, I found this did not lessen my enjoyment. Angela 's characters are always in unexpected situations and Minnie is the most unusual. Thanks for a reminder that transgender and intersex people are nothing new. We have always existed and always will.
Wow... What an adventure - both the story and the author's moving from her comfort zone
This is unique - yes Angela is known for TG fiction but this has an element of that while a thoughtful historical novel - civil war buffs too should find this a most interesting read - Minnie's story is heartwarming and heart wrenching ... Well done Angela...
As a student of the Civil War, I was not expecting the depth of characters and the plot to be as exceptional as it was. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and look forward to reading more, from this author. As an aside, I believe the 54th Massachusetts Infantry was composed after the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. I would recommend this book to most anyone.
I did not know how to work rating my earliest stories. This is worthy of more than five stars. You managed to keep and hold my attention both times. What a wonderful work of an historic time in our countries history.
