The Place That Never Existed

Rate this book
For Paul and Debbie it was meant to be the happiest time of their lives – a small village wedding in front of their family and friends, followed by a quiet honeymoon in Devon. Not everyone was happy to see them together. Someone from the past was intent on ending their marriage before it had really started. Now, supposedly away from it all in a picturesque log cabin, Paul and Debbie find themselves in the midst of mysterious happenings. Unexplained disappearances with people turning up dead, and all of it centred on the site of an horrific murder. A place the locals wish was a place that never existed.

Well
What to say!
A bit ‘bonkers’, a tad scary and a good lead story of a newly married couple who go on honeymoon to a secluded cabin in Devon
Lots of characters, lots of sexual referencing ( the bit where the gardener/handyman catches the honeymooners and offers to strip to join in was very funny ) lots of side stories, many musical references ( songs and artists ) and a ending I guessed followed by another that I hadn’t and was kinda bizarre, not that bizarre means bad, maybe unexpected would be better wording
This author writes books that however odd the story gets you are still there and always want to know what is going to happen
Maybe not a read for everyone and am
not sure if enjoyed it or was just stunned by it but either way I wont forget it

This book was interesting from start to finish! It starts as a spooky tale, weird house and people just dissappear. Then it gets deeper and as I don't want to give any spoilers all I'll say is it really wasn't the ending I was expecting!
You really won't guess it. If you do I wanna know!
I liked the authors listed as characters book choices, fun idea, a very good unusual original book.
Edit:: I’ve recently listened to audio book of this. It’s atmospheric & is like a mini play. Lots going on. Sounds, music, voice play. Excellent.

A sign of great writing when you don't realise it is almost dark outside and you've been sitting glued to the pages for hours. This novel has everything the genre dictates. Relatable characters? Check. Creepy undertones? Check. Twisty plot? Check. A (very) unexpected ending? Check.

I had chilling tingles at the back of my neck-especially towards the end- and felt as though I was watching one of those uncomfortable horrors, when nothing terrible has happened...but by the creepy music and camera angles- you know it's about to!

I look forward to reading more from this talented writer.

This is not my usual type of book at all and so has to be taken into account when reading my review as I really don't think I am best placed to do the book and writer justice.
The book follows Paul and Debbie as they marry and spend a few days honeymooning in the Devon village of Huntsman Cove. They hire a cabin tucked away in the woods which is owned by ex police officer Ginny.
The pair are plagued by a very disturbed ex girlfriend and some strange goings on further into the wood at the Dudley House. Anyone who has visited this abandoned place never lives to tell the tale.
There are a whole host of characters, possibly too many, and they all are a little bit weird.
The book is full of humour, some of which I enjoyed immensely - I think Red Bear and the conversation with a CB radio was my highlight - and Jez made me laugh at times too. However practically every character mused about or acted upon some sexual fantasy or other and for me this just wasn't my thing.
I read on, intrigued as to what was going to happen next and what on earth was going on at The Dudley House. I could never have guessed. A surprising and bizarre ending with an even more bizarre epilogue!
This book does not conform to any genre boundaries and is definitely an off the peg designer read as opposed to a chainstore trend. I think it will (and does) appeal to readers who will have read similar books whereas for me, my first foray into this sort of read, I need a little more time to acclimatise!

I want to start with the cover… Simple, yet draws you in and relates to the story well. A good first impression. This is the first book I have read by Jim Ody and it will not be my last. I awarded four stars. This is my kind of story. I was interested after the prologue as that caught my attention. The Place That Never Existed is written well, easy to read and fast paced with some brilliant Characters and settings. This is a well thought out plot and story which I would recommend to you all. I enjoyed reading this one. This book keeps you guessing till the last page. Enjoy!

We follow the story of newlyweds, Paul and Debbie, spending their honeymoon in a cabin in the the woods - and Paul's ex, who is struggling to move on, so joins their honeymoon uninvited, causing them quite a few problems.
They're staying near a strange house that is the stuff of local legend, where unusual things happen, people disappear and turn up dead...
The best thing for me about this book was the unique and atmospheric narration, which certainly brought an air of mystery and suspense to the story.
What a strange story though... I must be honest, it took a while to get going with it, I wasn't sure what was happening quite a lot of the time and when it ended still felt a little confused. Some of the content seemed superfluous and I had difficulty with time lines.
That said it had some interesting characters and the twists managed to just about hold my attention. There is humour at points and some great writing - the ending was rushed though.
It's odd... strange... confusing and, perhaps, needs a second reading / listen to. It's had a lot of great reviews so perhaps it's just me that struggled to 'get it' to the same extent.

Dark Minds is a charity collection of short stories from the very best crime writers, and one of those who contributed was author Jim Ody. After reading Jim Ody’s short story I knew I wanted to read more by this author so was thrilled when the opportunity arose to read and review The Place That Never Existed.

This book and I got off to a rather shaky start. It took me a little while to warm to the author’s style but before long I was enjoying Debbie and Paul’s adventures in deepest, darkest Devon. Over time I found I warmed to the couple and wanted to know about the strange things which were happening to them. Particularly with regards to Paul’s ex-lover. The characters found in the small village also interested me, with their well-kept secrets and strange ways.

I was happily enjoying the book but then, I’m afraid, the ending happened. The ending of this book is like nothing I have read before (and I’m not 100% sure I would want to read again). I felt there were several unanswered questions which were left hanging. I like my crime novels to have a certain realism to them but I’m afraid I found it impossible to believe the conclusion of this book.

Saying that, I think I am in the minority because I’ve read so many fantastic reviews of this novel. Many of which highlight and praise the different ending. Jim Ody’s writing is good, his characters are believable but I’m afraid this book and I just didn’t gel. I also found one particular story-line quite predicable, which doesn’t normally tend to spoil a book for me and isn’t part of the reason this book and I didn’t click.

With the assurance that it doesn’t feature a similar conclusion, I would read another book written by Jim Ody as I think he’s a good storyteller and I liked the humour included in the novel. Would I recommend this book? If you’re looking for a crime thriller with something quite different then yes, I would. If however you like a certain amount of realism in your reads then maybe look elsewhere. Or if you’re an Oxford United fan….don’t read this book if you’re a U’s fan!

Three out of five stars.

I chose to read and review a copy of The Place That Never Existed. The above review is my own honest, unbiased opinion.

The Place That Never Existed is the first book I've read by author Jim Ody. You never know quite what you're going to get when you read an author that's new to you so I was looking forward to reading this.

Debbie and Paul have just got married and are spending their honeymoon in a secluded cabin in the woods near Huntsman Cove in Devon. Far from the reaches of the internet and mobile phones the couple set out to explore the surrounding area and soon they stumble upon the old Dudley House and decide to take a look around. Unbeknown to the couple the house is the place of local legends and known for the bad things that happen there and not somewhere that someone wants them to be.

But Paul has an ex-girlfriend who can't accept that their relationship is over and is determined to get Paul back. When Debbie's hapless brother Jez inadvertently reveals the couples honeymoon destination it's not long before there are several other people heading towards Huntsman Cove.

This is a well plotted and enjoyable read with some great humorous moments littered throughout. Full of peculiar characters who each appear to have their own agenda's through the book but it's not until the last third of the book that all the strands are pulled together. I really enjoyed Jim Ody's style of writing, however, for me the ending let it down slightly. I felt that it could have been expanded on so that it didn't come across as being so rushed. That said, overall, it was a gripping, fast-paced read and I wouldn't hesitate to pick up another book by this author.

With kind thanks to author Jim Ody for the review copy.

The Place that Never Existed is a mystery novel with an unexpected ending! Following the newlyweds as they embark on their honeymoon we get a glimpse of their lives unfolding throughout the story. Even the most perfect relationship will still feel the influences of past experiences and these two are no exception. Jim Ody did a beautiful job adding realism to his characters. The small details within each held my attention and the dialogue was entertaining, driving the story along.

As I had the audiobook:
Nigel Peever's narration was brilliant and well done throughout the book. His accents displayed the background of each character and he flowed seamlessly from one to the next. This was an excellent listening experience

Another great read from Jim Ody.
I had a feeling all would not be as it seemed with this story and it definitely had a few surprises in store.
Paul and Debbie have just got married but someone wasn't happy to see this go ahead.
They head off on their honeymoon at Huntswood Cove, which is a place in the woods with no phone signal.
For me, this was when the alarm bells started ringing as I could tell Huntswood Cove wasn’t what it seemed to be.
There is so much I want to say about the story but I don't want to give too much away, and you need to discover it for yourself.
This is a creepy, suspense filled read that will have you on the edge of your seat.
Thanks to Jim Ody for sending me a copy to read.

Firstly, i love this cover. This appeals to me in so many ways, simple yet elegant. It provides that air of unknowing before you even open the book up.
This is my first book by Jim Ody. I'm always excited when i open a book by a new (to me) author. Usually, you can get a good feel for the writing
stye and attention to detail in the first couple of chapters. Now, when it came to this one, i was hooked within the first couple of pages.
The author has a great ability for adding that air of mystery and spookiness to a book without actually going down the path of gory/gruesome etc. By the merest whisper of a line in this story i had my own back up, and was on edge, waiting for more to be revealed but having a feeling you weren't going to be any more at ease when it was. I was right.
Each character is well thought out, well written and have their own personalities. Helped along by the authors brilliant descriptive prowess. I absolutely could see the beach, the woods. I absolutely could feel the air of trepidation and suspicion. Really well done.

The story is flowing and fast paced, and makes the reader want to keep going, to find out that little bit more, but when you do it's just not enough to keep you satisfied until the next time you can pick it up. I kept wanting to carry on until the end and, if given the chance i'd have devoured this book in one sitting. As it was, i kept thinking about
what was going on and kept my kindle at hand so i could read more in a grabbed few minutes here and there.

So in short, great cover, great story, loved the writing style and i will definitely be reading from Mr Jim Ody! Highly recommend this book.

Weird!!!

I don't even know why I finished this book. Should really have just put it down halfway through. Too many characters, too many sub plots, and the strangest ending that I have ever came across. After saying that, I gave it three stars because I liked some of the characters and felt that they deserved to be expanded on and there would have been a decent novel there.

When you pick up this book, make sure you have settled somewhere with all the lights on, a supply of tea (or something stronger if you are of a nervous disposition) and enough biscuits to get through at least the first chapter - after that your stomach will be too tense to eat, even with the mouth watering descriptions of delicious meals and snacks Paul and Debbie keep trying to distract themselves with rather than accepting what strangeness surrounds them. Because reading this book is like watching "The Blair Witch Project" crossed with "The Hand that Rocked the Cradle"; it has the feel of a cinema blockbuster. Ody has combined all the perfect elements of a story that makes you too scared to turn the light off at night and too scared to ever stop at a service station again.

The opening chapter really had me interested. Paul and Debbie, out walking in the forest stumble across a derelict house.

The aura of a forgotten house that was sat in such beautiful forest surroundings should be idyllic, but somehow there was an unspoken sinister presence that instantly put you on edge. A spine tingling feeling aroused by one too many horror movies of deserted houses in the woods just like this.

I can't resist an empty house, an isolated location, no phone signal and a loved up couple. Ody gave me the magic ingredients for a story and I couldn't help but let out a bit of an "ooohhhhh" in anticipation- in my inner voice obviously otherwise it would have just been embarrassing.... *blushes*

I liked that Ody acknowledged the comfortable, well worn path he was treading with his protagonists being a couple, in the middle of nowhere, entering a house and then all the subsequent suspicions and events that came from this decision to cross the threshold when they shouldn't have. I liked that he often reminded us of well known scary horror films and other contemporary crime writing authors as I found it quite playful and it probably helps the reader to buy in to a few situations when the reader might challenge the character's actions. Like when someone decides to enter an empty, dark house and then walk all the way down into the dark dark cellar with no protection and without anyone knowing they are there!

Ody has a very wry voice at times and his humour filters through the pages. I particularly liked Paul's reflection at the beginning of the story about the fact they were honeymooning on a tight budget in the back of beyond - not what they had ever imagined for their special holiday. And especially not with all the strange goings on that they had managed to get mixed up in.

A five star hotel in the Maldives wouldn't have offered them such adventure. Just the boredom of warm white sands, a cyan coloured sea lapping at their feet with cocktails, in their own paradise, Speedos and bikinis, sunburn and coconut lotion, relaxing and reading the day away. Awful.

Ody also has some fun by changing writing style a few times to incorporate lists. For example when we meet two new characters who are about to break up, Ody takes us through a bullet point presentation of the emotions a woman will be through after a break up. I have never come across the term 'post relationship funeral' but it is a great explanation! I also enjoyed his description of Chrissy and how he was able to convey so much about her through one or two comments:

He had looked nervous and she had looked at her bare finger and hoped that it would soon have a ring on it.

But ultimately, smiles aside and despite Paul and Debbie's generally positive attitudes and sunny personalities, this is a dark tale of obsession, revenge, secrets and relationships. Ody is always able to deliver these moments of shock effectively with lots of dramatic impact:

he thought it best not to let her know about the text message. And of course, neither of them knew about the small black tract box underneath the Jeep.....

There are plenty of sentences that get under your skin, that unsettle you and his straight talking lines of prose can be very evocative.

Could a place actually be evil? Even without the person being there, a dark residual aura hanging over the place and polluting the air?

So are you settled in that chair? Well hurry up because Paul and Debbie haven't got long. You don't want them disappearing like the people in the novel! I would recommend this novel. It's very readable, very accessible and a good mixture of crime, horror and psychological drama. Enjoy!

After reading the author's debut book Lost Connections and loving it. I went into this book without reading the blurb knowing that I would enjoy it being formula with the style of writing. What I wasn't expecting was the author to put a whole new spin on things and write a story that is totally different to the first one. It shows that Jim has the ability to write in a different genre and still making it an engaging thriller. What can I say but I freaking loved it!

And a thriller it certainly is I was hooked from the start with the prologue which left me wanting more. I actually devoured this in one afternoon it is full of suspense and mystery that’s for sure.

The wedding was meant to be the happiest day of their lives but someone wasn't happy to see them get married. But now they can get away and spend some time together on their honeymoon at Huntswood Cove. When we follow the newly weds on a pulse racing journey when the Huntswood Cove isn't what it seems to be.

There is so much I want to say about the plot but I don't want to give to much away. I will tell you that the first half half the story the chapters alternate to what happened before, which builds the story up.

Not only does the reader have no idea what is going on but neither do the characters. Debbie was definitely the star of the show with her ideas about the Cove which made me laugh out loud.

I have to say that I loved the mention of a couple of Crime Book Club authors in the story and Dudley in the West Midlands which is where I am from.

It is creepy full of suspense and you have you on tenterhooks not forgetting the OMG moments.and also some added humor. Not forgetting the fantasy element about it, ticking all the boxes for me.

The Place That Never Existed would make a brilliant film I cannot wait to see what the author has in store for us next. I cannot recommend this enough giving it 5 well deserved stars.

This is my first read of Jim's work, having seen so many reviews praising his creativity. I decided to dive head first into his most discussed publication, I was not disappointed. Jim creates a fleshed out set of characters, building a picture of a loving relationship between Debbie and Paul. As they start their new life as husband and wife, a dark shadow is still cast over what should be a wonderful occasion. As bit by bit we learn more about Paul's ex and her obsession to destroy any happiness that Paul wishes to pursue. Jim builds a tense atmosphere, adds unsettling and creepy vibes. With any interaction that involves Paul's Ex, as she stalks them on the honeymoon. The couple journey to Devon, to stay in a cabin in the secluded woods near a small village called Dark Haven. Which has its very own League of Gentlemen vibes with a hint of Deliverance mixed in for good measure.
Ody creates a fast paced piece of writing, which adds more context. As we get stories weaved in from the past, sharing the gruesome history hidden within the darkness of Dudley House.
While the happy couple stay in the Lavender Cottage, less than an hour away.
I'm not gonna lie, I've seen far too many horror movies based in the 80s that involve a cabin in the woods. To even dare trusting this as an option as a holiday, already you have tension rising with the lingering ex in the background.
We flash to the past to get more context on the property's eerie backstory. As we follow Henry's sexy rendezvous going sore, the reader realises they are in for a bumpy ride. The chapters in between the main story of ‘accidents’ and deaths all related to the property.
As we meet characters like Missy, Ginny and the quirky handyman Robin.
As the couple's honeymoon soon becomes a vacation nightmare. As we get more context on Christina, Paul's Ex and the hell she subjected them to. Honestly, the more you learn the more you hate the woman and pray as a reader Karma bites her in the ass. After all the pain she caused Paul while with him and then the further torture and upset she caused Debbie.
This Book is a slow burner with building up to the climax. However, it has you on tenterhooks throughout as you wait for things to go sideways.
You know it's coming, will the brother show up in time? What is going on in the Dudley House? More importantly will Debbie and Paul get through the incoming storm that is Hurricane Christina. But things do take an unexpected turn, this is not your typical haunted house story. Going back I realised the small hints here and there, like when you rewatch the sixth sense. Clever little hints hidden within the pages, that clicked in my head after I finished the story. Definitely a very different story to what I was expecting, in a good way.

I was lucky enough to receive a copy of this book for an honest review.
The plot of the book immediately had me intrigued & sounded right up my street. I love a good crime thriller. I was instantly drawn in & connected with most of the characters straight away & couldn't wait to read more.
I liked all the music references as it made it more real & you felt you were actually there in the story singing along & everything had a comfortable familiar feel.
Why have I not given this a better rating when I was enjoying this so much?
I was truly really enjoying the book & getting quite excited about where the story was going & couldn't wait for it to conclude. However it had a shocking ending which unfortunately I did start to predict but it was not for me & I felt really dissapointed & let down. It also felt a bit rushed & I didn't feel that the actual main event at the end was properly explained. Maybe if there had been a bit more at the end from Missy & an explanation of her relationship with Benji & more information about Benji then I might have felt better about the end.
If I could give 3.5 stars I would. However I have had to give a lesser rating as there were a lot of errors in the writing & incorrect words used. I found this really iritating & lost count in the end of how many I spotted. One example should have read...."recognising instantly the familar lazy-stride"...but actually read "family" instead of familiar.
I was really enjoying this book but sadly the errors in the writing & the ending did sadly dissapoint. That said though I would try another book by this author.
Thanks for allowing me the opportunity to read & write an honest review.

The writing in The Place That Never Existed is beautiful, however I did struggle with it at first as it's unlike anything I've read before, but once you get into the rhythm then it's so very enjoyable and well written. I found myself picking out lines to remember because of how well constructed they were and how much of an impact they had on me while reading. He also uses comedy and mentions of popular culture really well to lighten the tone at times.

Throughout the book I was chilled to the bone as the overall feel of the book was so very creepy and I never knew what was going on. Jim Ody weaves a tale of suspense and then the closer to the end it gets, the threads all get tighter and come together for the ending which was completely unexpected.

I really liked the characters of Debbie and Paul and I enjoyed their relationship. It was nice to see what they thought of each other through their thoughts and the fun that they had together. I always find it refreshing to see a couple together in thrillers and crime books.

There's very little I can say about the story without giving anything away, but it is extremely clever and well thought out and is full of surprises that I really didn't expect.

Whatever your expectations of The Place That Never Existed are, just take them and throw them out the window as it'll be like nothing you could have expected. If you want to check out a new author this year, definitely check out Jim Ody.

Reviewing for Sweet Southern Book Reviews by Skylar and Rena
From the very beginning this story had my attention. The story is woven through the experiences of many characters, mainly newlyweds Paul and Debbie, but all leading to the small village of Huntswood Cove and its house of legend. While on their honeymoon in the little fishing village Paul and Debbie meet a number of locals who are a bit strange by their standards, which gives the village an odd vibe in their opinion. Finding the abandoned house where a serial killer once lived, they hear a strange scream and watch an unusual scene unfold. As the story of The Place that Never Existed unfolds you find the town has their own secrets, as does the house, but also Paul and Debbie. With a strange child wondering around town, a mentally unstable ex girlfriend, and new acquaintances they can't quite get a handle on, Paul and Debbie find themselves in for a honeymoon they will never forget.
This is an excellent read! The author does an amazing job of introducing you to a cast of characters that you find yourself invested in while also unraveling the mystery surrounding the village and its residents. I cannot wait to read more by this author!

I was given this book in return for an honest review via the author.
The book kept me glued right up until the last 10%. I was kept guessing about who was doing what and the significance of the house. The characters, especially Jez, were entertaining and I felt I was really getting to know them.
The book did not end anywhere near what I had expected though. I was disappointed as it felt rushed, unexplained and a little bit random.
I am afraid to say I was left a bit bewildered. The overall writing and insight into characters and location was very good. I particularly enjoyed it as it is set around where I live and the references to other authors was a nice gesture!
I gave it 4 stars as previously said, it was the ending that disappointed, the rest of the book was fab. It is an interesting, quirky read. Would definitely class it as mystery/suspense more than crime.

I will certainly be reading more of Jims work in the future.

I was given this as a no strings attached review copy. I would have liked to have given it 3.5* but can't do that sadly. It means it's certainly more than just a good to read book but not quite in the upper echelons of my taste.
As the blurb describes, newly weds venture into a very remote & unique part of Devon devoid of digital communications. Throw in stalking by the groom's ex, a village populated by some unusual people, corrupt officials, a derelict house wrapped in legend, suspicious deaths & a whole lot more. All strands collide at the end producing an ending few would have guessed.
The humour is good but I found the constant naming of authors & music involved in popular culture to be a tad overdone. Also the numeous explanations drawn out in point form were a tad laboured. Hence 3.5 * not 4.
Nevertheless I enjoyed this book & look forward to reading more by this author.

This is about an old abandoned house in a small town with local legends and lore attached to it. However, this is not a haunted house novel nor is it about the paranormal.

But I won't tell you what it's actually about because finding out is what makes this book so much fun and really creepy. With a good dose of tongue in cheek humour, a crazed ex, a newlywed couple, and something terrifying lurking in the abandoned house, this novel is fast paced and never lets up. Each chapter ends in some cryptic thought or cliffhanger and you'll just want to keep reading to find out the secrets.

While I love this type of suspense building, I really wish we could have spent more time with the ending and the revelation of what's going on. It was a tad brief for me personally. But that doesn't take away from this being one hell of a good read and one that I highly recommend!

I was very pleased to receive an advance copy of this book from the writer himself, in exchange for an honest and fair review. As the references to my two great passions, music and crime fiction, were rife in this book, it could scarcely fail to delight and entertain. I found it a refreshing change from some crime novels as it is written with humour as well as drama and intrigue. The characters are well drawn and there is a good sense of place. It tells the story of a newly wed couple who opt to spend their honeymoon in a remote cottage in the woods. The story behind an abandoned nearby house is thoroughly entertaining and I look forward to other novels by Jim Ody.

I was given this book to read so that I could give it an honest review. I must say, once I got used to the writing style, it was well worth the read. There are so many characters taking their own little journeys through out the book, but you can see the links building until they came together at the end. The plot line kept you intrigued and wandering what would happen next, and I found it difficult to put down. There was also a few places that did make me chuckle. I did find the last few pages felt rushed, as though the author was in a hurry to finish, hence the 4 stars. This has not put me off though and I can't wait for the second instalment in this book.

The Place That Never Existed is a thriller that follows Paul and Debbie on their wedding and honeymoon. Which happens to be in a strange town full of mysterious people and goings on. The story is really well written and sets the scenes perfectly. Paul and Debbie are really likeable characters that you will be rooting for as the story unfolds. The book is very tense in places and kept me turning the pages right up until the end. The ending has a massive plot twist that I never saw coming at all! Although thrillers are not my usual genre of book (I've said before I'm a bit of wimp) I really enjoyed reading this.

Loved this book I got this for an honest review and I can honestly say I enjoyed all the twists and turns and how people in power think they are all that and can get away with anything they want when people start disappearing from a certain house and nobody questioned it till the newlyweds come and there landlord ex police officer started to get suspicious of the activity in the house and started asking one of her old colleagues that all the fun started only thing what I didn't understand why it ended they way it did I'm hoping there is going to be more in the series with Paul and Debbie.
