The Write Decision

Rate this book
The most dangerous part of jury duty may be when it's all over.

Always ready for some in-the-field research, author Carla Williams is almost happy when she’s called in for jury duty. She’s not so happy to discover it’s a high-profile trial for the attempted murder of a San Antonio police officer, especially since her fiancé, Roger, is a homicide detective. But if it’s not a problem for either the defense or prosecution attorneys, why should it be a problem for her? Carla’s conviction that the truth will win out is challenged by inconsistent facts, and high emotions within the court room. Roger would never ask her to compromise her principles, but will he support her when she sides with the defendant and starts her own investigation to find the real shooter? Will Carla still get her happy ending, or has she stumbled into a plot twist she can’t write her way out of?

Gena Webb aka Kay Wyont

Gena Webb’s passion has always been writing, but through the years it took second place to her other endeavor—serving her country. Born in California, she enlisted in the Air Force a few years after high school graduation. Her first assignment was as a computer operator in Omaha, Nebraska.

Eventually, she ended up in San Antonio, Texas, where she retired after serving more than 23 years. Eight months later, she got bored being a bum and went back to the Air Force where she served in a civilian capacity for another 19-plus years.

If Gena’s learned anything in her life, it's this: God is in control, He has a plan, and that plan includes only what is best for us. Although her books aren't "preachy" by any stretch of the imagination, she does tend to put that concept into her novels. Everyone could occasionally use a gentle reminder to live by faith, don't you think?

She currently lives in San Antonio with her wonderful, supportive husband of many years. Her children/stepchildren are scattered throughout the country, although their one daughter lives two houses away. This comes in handy when they want to travel, since she doesn't have to walk too far to feed their indoor kitty babies and the 4,000 stray cats that have taken up residence in the yard. That might be a slight exaggeration, but there are quite a few.

Gena Webb also writes under the pen name of Kay Wyont. Both of her series (The Misadventures of Miss Write and Alamo City Mystery) are set in San Antonio. They are liberally sprinkled with humor and the flavor of her adopted hometown. A percentage of all proceeds from her novels are donated to various charitable organizations. Carla is selected to be a juror in the case of an attempt on a police officer’s life. She’s a little worried about how the outcome of the trial might affect her newfound relationship with Roger. But he respects her and her opinion, right? And how did the newspapers even find out she’d been selected?

It’s going to be an interesting couple of weeks!

As the trial moves forward, Carla’s worst fears are realized. Roger and his colleagues are counting on this guy being put behind bars. But the more she hears, the more Carla is convinced that the prosecution hasn’t proven their case “beyond a reasonable doubt”. When it’s declared a mistrial, the fat is proverbially in the fire. And Carla ends up giving Roger the ring back.

Webb is masterful at creating the suspense here. Even as I giggle at some of the interactions between the characters, I’m fully invested in finding out what happened. And oh boy do I want to give Roger a piece of my mind!!! In the end, the wrap up is another shot out of left field, but I love that about these books. They aren’t your run-of-the-mill whodunnit by a long shot!
Cannot wait to see what they get into next.

Grab them both, you’ll be glad you did.

[Many thanks to the author for the opportunity to read a copy of this book. This is my honest review, the opinions expressed herein are entirely my own.]

Carla Williams is back and she finally gets to try her hand a jury duty.

Carla thought that getting selected for jury duty would be fun and that she would get to learn more about the system and what happens, to help her write her novels.
Sadly, now that the day has come she doesn’t really want to do it and after a long day of waiting around, she would be more than happy to go home without being selected.

Unfortunately for her, she is selected and for a slam dunk case where the defendant is obviously guilty of trying to rob someone and shoot a police officer. Or is he? As the trial goes on Carla is not so sure and the lack of evidence is not helping her with her decision, maybe this case isn’t so crystal clear.

Now the press have her name and know she is on the jury and Roger is furious when the verdict doesn’t come out the way he had hoped. As all Carla’s fears about serving jury duty on this case come to pass, can she believe in herself long enough to prove her theory right and maybe save an innocent man from prison?

While this story was different from the previous one, I still loved it.
It was great to have Carla and her friends back, I love their conversations and it’s alway fun to try and figure out a mystery.

Carla Williams, an author is called for Jury Services in a high profile trial for attempted murder of a rookie Police Officer and serving on the Jury will give her a good insight into how the jury system works for her books. The pressure is on her for a guilty verdict as her fiancee, roger, is a serving Police Officer. She is initially pleased to be on the jury but as the case proceeds, if doubtful that the accused is guilty and after raising her doubts in the jury room and he is acquitted much to the disgust of Roger and his colleagues who blame her for the verdict after one of the jurors talks to the press. After the trial is complete she decides with some friends to go and look at the site of the action and stumbles upon some missed evidence and they carry out their own investigation resulting in a conviction. However in the meantime Carla and Roger have broken off their engagement due to the tensions created from the result of the trial. Can they overcome their problems or is this really the end of their relationship? and have they accused the right person. Another great mystery from Gena Webb! The Write Decision, which I received an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy to read, review and post online), is the second book in Webb's The Misadventures Of Miss Write Series.

I wasn't a huge fan of the particular criminal misdeeds put forward in the plot BUT the writing and characters kept me turning the pages. My focus really was more on the characters than who did what and when. Admittedly, this is a somewhat strange reaction for reading a cozy mystery but Ms. Webb's writing and characters are THAT good.

I found the plot gave the writer a lot of opportunities to reflect on the relationship between our amatuer sleuth/novelist Carla Williams and her fiancé San Antonio detective Roger Graf. Honestly, I was probably more concerned with the character developments occurring in the book. The characters are written so well. I got caught up in their lives and wanting to know more of them that there were moments where I had to remind myself I was suppose to be solving a mystery! Highly recommend.

A brilliant addition to the series following on from Gena's first novel. This was just as good as the first and the plot surrounding the main character flows effortlessly into this novel from the last. Gena's writing style is witty, comical and easy going, making the narrative easy and entertaining. The first novel made an emphasis on establishing the characters leaving Gena to explore a mystery not centred on the main character in this one. Yet having said that it was so well written Gena was still able to use this novel to explore Carla's and Roger's relationship.

This series will always remind me of that classic TV programme "Murder she wrote" but with the character in a more modern context. I would highly recommend this to anyone that fancies a mystery with witty humour, and human characters.

I received this book from the author for the pleasure of reading and leaving an honest view. A real pleasure.

The Write Decision by Gena Webb.
I received a free copy of the book from the author in exchange for my review.
The story picks up several months after the events of the previous book. Carla & Roger are now engaged. Carla gets chosen to serve on the jury of a high profile case, leaving her to wonder how this will affect their relationship.
As with the first novel in the series, there is a good amount of character development and humor to balance out the crime solving and mystery.
Early in Chapter 2 I got a chuckle out of the following --
Her magazine failed to derail her impatience, so she spied on her neighbors. The man on her right was working the daily Jumble puzzle and the woman on her left was engrossed in a novel. Judging the book by its cover, Carla decided it looked boring and wished she had one of her own to give the woman.

Lifts the bar even higher.

I really enjoyed the first book in the series, but this one was even better. All of the elements which made the first book enjoyable, especially the wise-cracking main character, were there again, but the author also blended in elements of a legal thriller to give readers a bit of a taste of that genre. And with one nicely done little throwaway sentence at the very end of the book, the author has me hanging out for the next book (which fortunately is due very shortly).

We catch up here with author Carla. This time she's been called for jury duty and thinks it will be good for her wriresearchting.

The plot moves quickly on and as in the first book there are a few dead ends in the lot.

We meet again her friends from book one who join her in her adventures.

You will definitely be reminded of a well known film.

As before there is no gratuitous violence and the romance is chaste.

I received this book for free and the views expressed are solely my own.

The Write Decision
Jury duty can be a difficult thing, especially when a verdict cannot be reached. Sorting it all out is difficult. Once again, a gripping story, written with care and empathy for the characters in their various situations. It keeps you thinking, as the possibilities twist one way, then the other. Can the worst idea really be right? This tangle is not going to be easy for everybody to accept. How do they handle it all?

I enjoyed this book almost as much as the first in the series. A courtroom drama, perhaps just a little too reminiscent of 12 Angry Men. But the characters are wonderful and the personal relationships engaging. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review.

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of the book to review.

Five stars in this genre are rare for me. This one is great fun. Read it. The character development continues, the premise of not very wanted jury duty is likely familiar to most of us, as is trying to reconcile all the facts to a sticky situation. Any more would be telling, so just go read it.

Read the first one. Really enjoyed it. The second one was a good sequel but the author doesn't do as much research as her character. Sped my way thru to the end and then discovered she doesn't know a thing about horses. Those is us who do know a sorel (or sorrel) isn't gray. But that wasnt pertinent to the story and I will forgive it. Thank you for letting Roger and Carla work it out.

Oh my! I loved the first book in this series and the second book delivers as well! Well written, twisting plot, and great characters. I appreciate the author creating Carla (the main character) as a smart, strong, and morally centered woman. We need more Carla's in writing and in real life. Definitely recommend this book and the first!

Too Funny

I love this series! Carla and her best friend Maggie are two peas in a pod, and the interplay between them is hilarious. Throw in a mystery to solve and a little romance, and you have a great read.

Once again a really good read. I started reading this book early this morning and didn't want to stop. I really like that this is an author writing about an author who is always looking for ways to improve her writing and for ways to make her characters more authentic with a good story to go with it. Genre's books are both enjoyable and entertaining.
