Negalyod starts out quite interesting - our main character herds a troupe of dinosaurs, which get killed by overflying semi-sci-fi looking aircraft that supposedly control the weather. So our dinosaur herder wants revenge, and he thinks he'll find it in the city. The city is a huge sci fi monstrosity and things get complicated. There we encounter the titular god network, a kind of AI that governs the city.

That all sounds interesting enough, and it is, with nice Moebius-like art, with nice designs of the city and its inhabitants.. but then it all fizzles out in the last third, with an unsatisfying ending.

Sad network.

Quite disappointment. Great art and world full of interesting ideas, but it's lacking some consistency let's say. Seem like author it's just pasting some cool stuff he wants to draw and trying to create story from it. Characters are flat, dialogs feel unnatural, even infantile in some cases. When something needs to work in some way, it just does, without some logical path (even slightly sketched) to it, or something backing it up. One of the cases in comics when author creates really beautiful art - some pages are quite stunning, especially whole page panels, - but he should hire somebody else for the script. Or at least should have some really good friends to point him in right direction... One more star just for the art and concept of the world which I really liked.

Here's a conundrum: a graphic novel with stunning art and imaginative designs, set in a post-apocalyptic world among dinosaurs and ruins of forgotten civilizations; and yet with all these boxes ticked, I felt absolutely nothing while reading it. Is it because I've read too many similar stories lately? Is it because of lukewarm characters and rushed pacing? Or is there something else, unrecognizable to me, but separating the works that are objectively good and the works that I fall in love with?

Ponekad su neke priče prekratke i nisu dovoljno razvijene, a ponekad su preduge kroz nepotrebno razvlačenje. Kod ovog stripa je prvi slučaj. Tu se moglo dobiti nekoliko tomova i puno, puno bolje stvari. Ali ok, što je tu je. Zgodan svijet. Fora crtež.

Vincent Perriot zeigt mit "Negalyod", dass in den europäischen Comics das Vermächtnis von Moebius und Co. sehr wohl weitergetragen wird. Der Einzelband spielt nicht nur mit ähnlichen Stilmitteln, er vermittelt ein gleiches Gefühl bei der Lektüre. Fantastik und Science-Fiction treffen aufeinander, Charaktere bewegen sich durch dystopische Welten, in denen futuristische Technologien und altertümliche Weisen nebeneinander koexistieren. Dinosaurier und alles beherrschende Netzwerke? "Negalyod" bietet dies ohne ein Ungleichgewicht zu schaffen.

Dazu kommen die wunderschönen Zeichnungen von Perriot, der mit feiner Linie und vielen Details grosse Splashpages ebenso beherrscht, wie kleinste Panels. Ein Band also, der dank der tollen Verarbeitung für viel Genuss sorgt und visuell immer wieder staunen lässt. Auch wenn die Geschichte keinen Innovationspreis gewinnt.

Una muy buena historia avanzada de un modo pobre. Tiene detalles, imaginería, elementos y personajes que hacen un mundo muy atractivo y podría haber sido un gran cómic. Y la ilustración es un clásico, homenaje total a Moebius, bañada de un azul-ocre que acompaña totalmente en el tono.

Pero me he sentido como consumiendo una de esas películas desgraciadamente tan extendidas hoy en día, en las que la historia avanza sin transiciones y con una seleccion de diálogos simple y poco adecuada a veces.

Entretenido, pero en mi opinión, una lástima porque podría haber sido mucho mejor.

Vůbec jsem nevěděl, co od toho mám čekat. O to víc mě to bavilo. Takové uspořádání světa, jako zde, jsme už ve sci-fi viděli snad tisíckrát. Bohatí bydlí ve svých hi-tech městech na obloze, případně na oběžné dráze země a chudina živoří na vydrancovaném povrchu země. Zatím se to téma ale neomrzelo. Tady je to navíc okořeněné dinosaury. Všechno je lepší, když se tam přidají dinosauři. Taky jsou zde proudové stíhačky svázané z bambusů a poháněné “štěpným” motorem. No prostě velmi neobvyklý koktejl, který mi velmi chutnal.

Hlavní hrdina, pastevec dinosaurů jménem Jarri, je mužem mnoha schopností a je snadné si jej oblíbit. Scénář z něj možná dělá až příliš schopnou osobu, ale ve výsledku to tolik nevadí. Řízením osudu se Jarri dostane mezi rebely, kteří bojují proti systému, který ze země vysává veškerou vodu a mění ji v poušť. To je asi tak všechno, co se k tomu dá říct, aniž bych vyzradil příliš a připravil vás o překvapení. Komiks neodpoví na všechny otázky, které vás během čtení nutně napadnou, ale kupodivu mi to tady moc nevadilo. Ten svět je tak zajímavý a akce tak zábavná, že snaha o vysvětlení by mohla celkový dojem z komiksu zničit.

Co se týká výtvarné stránky, tak ta je skvělá. Na první stránce jsem si nebyl jistý, jestli se mi ta kresba líbí. Na druhé stránce jsem už ale věděl, že se mi líbí moc. Je planá detailů, plná davových scén se spoustu lidí, je v ní hodně velkolepých záběrů na krajinu i dynamických akčních scén. Hrozně moc tomu pomohly i syté barvy. Design některých postav mi připomínal Moebia.

8- Mad Max with dinosaurs - if this doesn't make you sit up straight, this isn't the book for you. It must be clear that the appeal of this book is it being a post apocalyptic story with dinosaurs. Don't expect deep character exploration, subtle emotions, or literary dialogues. Even focusing on the art and the action I thought the characters two dimensional and the dialogue wooden. So, no five stars from me then. But the art ... Very much worth the price of admission.
Admittedly, I love dinosaurs and there are a lot on display here - some even with feathers (luckily) and some flying reptiles as well. They are very well realised, acting like living creatures and integrated in mass scenes as part of the surrounding culture as well (think a dystopian Dinotopia - pun intended). The SF-part of the story is great as well - a city high up in the sky with a bit of a cyberpunk aesthetic and weird flying machines out of Miyazaki, trying to suppress a rebellion (of course). Luckily the art is presented in page filling panels, the illustrations teeming with detail. There's something to see in every corner! The art is reminiscent of Moebius (in its futuristic details) and of Mezieres (in its pencilwork). I've read comparisons with Simon Roy as well and I can see that. Just for the art alone I will slowly leaf through the book again. The story is not deep, as I said before, but there are some great action scenes and chases between dinosaurs and vehicles here. So my inner child was richly satisfied.
If you like epic SF spectacle with beautiful art in the European style, with dinosaurs, this is the graphic novel for you!

Absolutely stunning to look at (big shoutout to the colorist Florence Breton for this, because holy smokes), though lacking in the character department. Our protagonist is just an average farmer, who shows no personality until he suddenly remembers he has a missing mother late in to the story. His female protagonist fulfills further cliché roles by being both the love interest and her father's successor despite his efforts to keep her from harm. The German dialogue didn't always come across as natural, though that may be more of a translation issue than anything else.
Nonetheless, the setting was stunning and I enjoyed the addition of dinosaurs, because who DOESN'T love dinosaurs?

Current average rating is 3.5 and that seems about right.
It's beautiful, reminds me of La Tour (thé journey to the top of the tower, detailed architecture...) But with more action and a sci-fi western twist.
It did seem simultaneously too long and too short. Like lots of visual exposition and not enough narrative meat...
But still quite a lovely work of art.

Молодой пастух пасёт стадо трицератопсов где-то в бесконечных пустынных степях, переписываясь с красавицей на сайте знакомств, в то время как вся вода из земли идёт по трубам куда-то в гигантские летучие города, вокруг которых выстроено многоуровневое тоталитарное общество. Однако, система достаточно нестабильна, и только и ждёт искры восстания.

"Негалиод" — ода старым приключенческим комиксам, нарисованная вполне в духе Мёбиуса. Прекрасный рисунок же и является главным козырем книги. Впрочем, сюжет тоже временами неплохой, и способен выкинуть неожиданный кунштюк. Автор черпал вдохновение отовсюду, и здесь в небольших дозах есть просто всё на свете — и "Наусика из Долины ветров", и "Мэдмакс", и "Инкал", и капля "Звёздных войн" с киберпанком. Больше же всего "Негалиод" напомнил мне серию "Пророк" Брэндана Грэма.

Автор написал уже вторую книгу, но и первая вполне самодостаточная. Не пропустите, если вам нравится что-то подобное. У "МИФа" есть бумажная и электронная версия. Вот небольшое превью.

I got this on Netgalley in exchange for an honest review!

I love a good dystopian world, and combined with dinosaurs I was expecting to really enjoy this. Instead I was met with flat characters (there is an attempt to make some of them mysterious, but for me it did not work at all), world-building and lore that does not go further than surface level and a plot that, combined with the other two things, was so slow and jumpy that I wanted to DNF at 30%. I stuck it out, but did not feel like it improved for me. Again, the biggest problem I had was that I did not care for any of the characters and the ending only left me feeling very meh.

Maybe someone will like this, but I did not (sadly).

Ein wunderbaren Science-fiction Epos in Graphic Novel Form hat Vincent Perriot hier abgeliefert. Die Zeichnungen sind zum einen sehr gut besonders die großen Zeichnungen die eine Seite ausfüllen von den Städten und Steppen. Die Welt in der wir hier hinein geschleudert werden scheint irgendwie eine Endzeit Welt zu sein, die kontrolliert wird von dem Netz. Diesem Netz kommt der Leser auf die schliche durch Jarri, der ein Dino-Hirte ist. Das ist nämlich das kleine Sahnehäubchen, in diesem Epos gibt es Dinosaurier. Leider ist das Ende, ein wenig unbefriedigend, deshalb ein Stern Abzug.

El arte de este cómic está a años luz de su flojo guión. Es como si en la impresionante Opera de París estuviera en cartel Chabelita, la hija de la Pantoja. Una lástima porque con una historia a la altura, el resultado hubiera sido de obra maestra. Aún así como deleite para la vista merece la pena.
