Autumn Eldridge considers herself one of the lucky ones—after all, she got rescued from a life of horror after just six months. That was three years ago. Now she has a black belt in karate and she is never going to be a target again. So when billionaire Cyrus Black invites her to help other teens from being taken in the first place by joining his elite team, she jumps at the chance. She is partnered with the mysterious Noah Fuller, and she wonders why he is on the team, since he’s the only team member who was never trafficked. Destiny Wexler has had an incredibly bad year. First her mom died, then her dad remarried way too quickly, and she just found out she’s pregnant. When her jerk of a boyfriend breaks up with her, she turns to a friend she met last year in a chat group for teens who have lost their mothers. Finally, things are starting to look up. She’s just met two new friends. Even better, her chat room friend is going to fly in and take her to lunch. But when she lies to her new friends—who she doesn’t realize are on the team trying to save her—and meets her “friend,” she finds herself #caged and betrayed. She can’t believe how deep the lies have gone and she’s terrified no one will be coming to save her.
I’m an author who had a somewhat unorthodox upbringing. I was raised in South America and the Middle East, and wrote my first stories as a teenager in Kuwait, where my sister and I proved it really is hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk. I wrote my first novel in three months on a typewriter when I was 21, I used every romance cliché possible (including amnesia — need I say more?), and never rewrote anything, which is why it’s so much fun to pull it out occasionally when I need a good laugh. I wrote sporadically until my youngest child (who is now 18) was two, when I decided it was time to either actually start writing, or to stop saying I was a writer. So I took a class and started doing the scary things that writing requires. Now I’ve written about twelve novels and several children’s books.
I really wanted to give this one 5 stars, but after all the buildup from the previous 3 books in the series, I was hoping for some sort of resolution on the situation from the prequel novella, not another cliffhanger! It was such a disappointment to me!
That being said, I really felt that this story had a lot going for it! It touches on several subjects that need to be addressed in this day and age, and makes them relevant for the target audience. I liked how Autumn grew into her role as a North Star member, and how resilient she was bouncing back. I thought she made a good team with Noah and liked how they were able to connect with Destiny.
All things considered, this is a book worth sharing with your children, as is the series at large! They were an eye opening and educating read!
I'm glad I pushed through and read all these books. It was not easy to read but it's also nice to know what can happen to kids if they are not being careful online. The peer pressure girls get from boys to have sex. This last book really went through and shared what the girls had to go through with sex trafficking. It was pretty clean. Didn't go into much detail. Yes I teared up at the end. It was a very good ending.
This was an eye-opening read. It tackled exploitation and sex-trafficking in a relatable way. It was good to see the team take on trafficking. I'd rate this PG-13 for discussion of sex trafficking and references to sex and getting pregnant.
Another of the hard books to read but so much the reality of the situation. It makes you sick because that's the reality of it. I appreciate the reality of young girls being sold into sex slavery. It could be anyone at anytime and it scares me, but that's good because we can't be complacent. Thanks to you ladies I"m one more mom teaching her kids to watch out.
As Christians we often live in our own safe little world without knowledge of trafficking. It's time for us to get out of our comfort zone and become champions for those at risk.
While I am sure it is an incredibly hard subject I cannot help but think there should be other books in this series. This was an amazing book and the whole series has made me think about what can I do to help.
This series takes a very difficult subject and does a great job of making an interesting story and educating the reader about sex slavery. It is written so young adults can read it. I highly recommend everyone read this series.
