Calma introduces the visual language of Brazilian painter and illustrator Stephan Doitschinoff, who finds his creative cadence in the realm between authentic urban art and rural spirituality. The title Calma is not only Stephan Doitschinoff's alias as a graffiti writer, but also the abbreviation of "con alma" (c'alma) in Latin, meaning "with soul." His emblematic metaphoric imagery feeds off Afro-Brazilian folklore, pagan and alchemistic symbolism and contemporary pop culture. Doitschinoff composes spectacular murals and applies his extraordinary talent to emblazon houses, churches and walls in rural cities in his South American homeland. For the first time, Calma documents his artistic journey through these rustic areas and presents the complete visual pandemonium of a young urban artist who creates powerful figurative worlds. His colourful murals and black and white drawings are a sensation internationally and have been shown in galleries and museums around the world.
Calma (aka Stephan Doitschinoff) has been one of my favourite artists for years. This is exactly what an art book should be — beautiful cover, great layout, strong visuals. It’s a solid compilation of behind-the-scenes imagery and a glimpse into some really rural, rustic parts of Brazil. For fans of street art and graffiti, Calma’s been around a long time, consistently contributing with a style that’s both beautiful and incredibly well executed. Top artist, and another standout art book from Gestalten.
This book is everything you want from an art book. The cover by itself is a piece of art!
Inside you'll find sketches, murals, paintings, an interview with the artist Calma- in which he tells about his life and the influences and meanings behind his works-, and some very funny short-histories written by him about the time that he spent in the small city of Lençóis, painting houses, murals and even a church, and meeting some interesting local people!
If you like his art, you need to have this! The prints are beautiful, always covering at least one page- when not, two-, and the paper is of the best quality. It really doesn't get better than that!
