Unspoken Words

Rate this book
This is a story of unspoken words and how loud they can be.

Connor Bourke and I met when we were twelve years old. He was a quiet boy with so much to say and only one way to say it—through song. He’d lost his best friend to cancer, so I showed him there was love and life in loss, and to hold on to his memories, always.

Eloise Mitchell was a blazing fire when my world turned dark. She’d shined so bright and burned so fierce that the wall I’d built around myself simply melted to the ground at her feet.

We shared everything together:
Our first kiss,
first love,
first mistake,
and first regret.

She taught me to speak,
to forgive,
and to never forget.

Through his music, he could say all he needed to say except for, ‘I love you’.

I could never tell her those three words.

Yet, I knew he meant them, that he loved me beyond all measure, beyond time
… beyond a broken heart.

I loved her more than anything.

Our bond was unbreakable.

Our love was ever after.

But, then, we tend to destroy the ones we love most.

And all bonds break, especially when the heart is what holds them together.

Good lord this was awful. The first thing you need to know when reading this book is that the “hero” is self absorbed and gets pretty much everything he has ever wanted( even the heart of the girl he loves after he beyond screws her over). And even in his external dialogue he explains how his cheating on this girl he loved (and basically destroying her) was supposed to happen so that he could have his perfect son. It’s actually really sick when you think about it. The heroine ends up with nothing. She wastes her entire life on a guy who screwed her over. Literally, her entire short life. The book is one giant tragedy, what was this author thinking? She tacked two really hard to swallow subjects in this book and it was just too much. I will admit that I am very anti-cheating, it takes a lot for me to swallow that pill. To have him do it, break the heart of the girl he “loves” and then over and over again say that he doesn’t regret it because of his son just didn’t fly with me. He could regret the situation that happened and still love his kid. For Pete’s sake there are people who have been raped and still choose to keep the baby, regretting one doesn’t mean that you regret the other. Or heck even if he was so drunk that he truly thought it was her, I could swallow it (because in all honesty a man can be sexually assaulted, there is a reason that alcohol intoxication is considered a reason for not consenting, it goes both ways) but no the author gave us way too many details of his awareness to get his betrayal out of our heads. Then he doesn’t go after the heroine when she leaves, he waits until it’s convenient for him. You know after he really rubbed it into her face by trying to “make it work” (ie to continue screwing the woman who specifically set out to try to ruin his relationship). The author tried to get us to feel sorry for the hero, he was just doing “the right thing”. Only no, it was even more pointless, because they broke up before his child ever had a memory of them together, so he compounded the hurt into Ellie for NO REASON AT ALL!
Then of course when he is ready to demand she be with him (4 years later) she does, pretty much immediately. They get together and here is the second part of the problem, that makes me wonder how the author had the balls to post this as a (romantic) love story? She dies a year later. She wasted her entire childhood on this guys who screwed her over. They finally get together, suddenly she’s pregnant and dying. Immediately. They were back together for 9 weeks exactly. She didn’t have to be either, she refused a common surgery that had very low risk rates because she didn’t want to have any risk of hurt to the baby. It really makes no sense. They baby is what made her heart stop, when she was only 9 weeks along. The surgery would have made her baby safer, as well as giving her a chance to live. She refuses... Again it’s actually pretty sick. It goes back to his cheating again, because her first thought was about how this was his and her baby this time, not his and the girl he cheated with. She was almost desperate to make herself be equal to that girl, and would take. I chance with their baby. It cost her her life....
If all that isn’t enough, there is the third disturbing part of the book, the hero goes on become a rockstar! Yep that’s right. Since he couldn’t keep it in his pants before when she was alive (and he doesn’t regret that because as he has said he got the real love of his life, his son, out of it) it’s a guarantee that he will be hooking up at some point. So he is in he early 20’s, he rides off into the sunset with his two beautiful kids, his dream career and the opportunity to meet a million more women. The only thing that he didn’t get to keep was the girl that he was willing to screw over again and again, but let’s be honest he threw her away along time ago. The author should have marketed this book completely different and people could have gone into it with a different mindset, they might have even left a different review. I don’t really know because I wasn’t given a chance. If she was honest about what happened upfront ie made sure that the reader knows that this book was about Conners journey and his life, (not a romance novel) then it might work as a regular drama. There is a market for that. The Green Mile sold millions of copies and was one of the few instances that a movie was as good as the book. It’s one of my favorite books and movies. But it works because it is what it is, they certainly didn’t market it as a romance... Don’t trick me into reading something like this when I wanted to read a love story. Not to mention that if I wanted to see a girl screwed over and over again never to find a HEA, I can go on Facebook. At minimum this should have been two separate stories. The story of the cheated on girl, and/or the girl that dies right after her daughter is born when she only 23 years old. Both together made it impossible to find root for the book in any capacity. This story broke so many rules for me that at this point I can faithfully say that I will never try this author again, and if asked for a recommendation I would have to warn others away from trying her. There was nothing to enjoy about this story. This wasn’t love overcomes all, this was loving the wrong person will destroy and end your life so don’t bother.

Since the author not only rated her book with 5 stars, but also said she loved it, I assume, thar the author condones cheating / despises women / writes from her own experience? / never heard of female self-respect and dignity.

Best-seller already???

Imo he was abused by ow. He was drunk and said multiple times no, couldn’t and other no variations. Ow was on top of him and didn’t use a condom. So, she got pregnant and he tried to make it work. I condemn more that he chose ow after she got pregnant. But for me ow raped H. We need to start to talk more about this. Only yes is yes.
H had a kid with the one that raped him.
Ow is always going to be in their life.
h always think he cheated. I need more info about what happened and that someone said that he was abused. I hate hate hate cheating but for me this was not.
h dies at the end giving birth to H and h’s daughter.
H goes to be a rockstar. That’s the end.

Sobbing. That's what I'm doing right now, as I type these words using my keyboard and wipe snot off my nose for the umpteenth time since I started "Unspoken Words." I've never read any of K.M. Golland's work before, and I'm a little bit pissed that that's the case right now. A case that I'm rectifying as soon as my credit card company says it's okay for me to abuse my Amazon privileges again.

I have no words to describe this book, really. It's sort of like Jojo Moyes meets Nicholas Sparks meets Romeo & Juliet. It's most definitely a love story - a wonderful one, with a beautiful start and a scary, yet even better, ending. It's sad, but uplifting. Hopeful. Lovely. It's just................. made me a bit more touchy-feely with every emotion I've got stored inside me. It's also frustrating, because it's now completely ruined me for the rest of the day.

*Sniff* I'm just gonna do laundry now. Whatevs. I don't care anymore.

Okay, I'm lying. I care about this story and I hate that I've already cast my vote on GR's annual "Best Books" thing, because "Unspoken Words" should ABSOLUTELY be spoken about.

“We need to talk. You need to yell. I need to let you yell. And then we both need to cry and hold each other.”

By the closing chapters of Unspoken Words, we found ourselves welling up as K.M. Golland’s story about fate and a once in a lifetime love, came to a close. This is a love story that began when two souls met at twelve, and despite obstacles and the complexities of youth and first love, they would reconnect and once again their bonds of love are tested.

From the ominous prologue, we thought Connor and Ellie’s love story was going to be an emotional one. We couldn’t wait for our hearts to be crushed as we witnessed the most beautiful scene in present day, then suddenly the story switches back to Ellie and Connor meeting as pre-teens.

When Connor Burke moves next door to Ellie, he brings with him pain and loss, after the tragic death of his best friend. It’s a loss he struggles to move on from, but with the help of outgoing Ellie, he finds a friend he can talk to and open his heart, and for Connor, it’s much easier to write his feelings than verbalise them, a matter of contention for Ellie.

“Love hurts no less than it’s supposed to.”
“You should write that into a song.”
“I already have.”

For Ellie Mitchell, Connor is the boy she sees herself with for the rest of her life, but she’s also focused on school and her future and wants Connor and herself to fulfil the plans for University they initially set out to achieve. Level headed Ellie proposes that she and Connor take a break to focus on their last year of school, away from any influences that could derail their plans.

Well, for reasons you’ll discover, things don’t go as expected with Ellie fleeing her hometown, leaving Connor and obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in Darwin. However, four years later and Ellie is returning to Melbourne and about to face the boy, now a man, who broke her heart.

We did enjoy much of this story, however, there were some aspects which prevented us from experiencing the utter sob fest we had anticipated at the start of the book. We felt Ellie and Connor spent a little too much time apart for us to truly connect and feel the devastation their paths would take.

“You’ll never lose me, Connor. You just can’t have me either.”

We couldn’t help but feel sorry for Connor – it felt as though he couldn’t win a trick. All we kept thinking of was that Friends episode…you know…’WE WERE ON A BREAK” – we felt his confusion as he tried his best to understand Ellie, and always felt his love for her was unquestionable. She had his heart.

There were some truly beautiful quotes and moments in this story and our hearts did ache throughout as K.M. Golland reminded us of the mark some people make in our lives and how we need to grasp and enjoy every precious and memorable moment. We just wish we could have experienced the full blown heart clenching emotions we were hoping would emanate from this story.

‘People come into our life all the time. They come and they went, and they left their mark. Sometimes, that mark was subtle and, sometimes, it was more intense. But then, sometimes, if we were lucky, a person came along and marked our existence so profoundly we felt as if the earth had shifted from its axis, and the affinity shared was so overpowering it stole the air from our lungs. Sometimes, we met a person who left us breathless and, for me, that person was Connor.’

ARC provided for an honest review

KM Golland, this book absolutely blew me away.

A wonderful story of first love, first heartbreak and finding a way back to each other over distance and time.

Connor and Eloise - "Ellie" had me drawn into their story from the very first word to the last last. Though I may have been reading those last words through leaking eyes!

Every turn of the page had me filled with another emotion. I laughed. I loved. I hurt.

There were twists and turns throughout the book that had me - and my emotions - all over the place. There were definitely a few WTF moments! Ms Golland would rip my heart out, put it back together- only to do it all again.

Make sure you have alcohol and tissues handy throughout!

Beautiful, heartbreaking, loving. There are not enough words to describe how much I loved this book.

Buy it. Read it. Love it.

I obviously loved this book because I wrote it ;) Jokes aside, it's not a fluffy romance. It's not meant to be. These characters make mistakes. They're flawed and certainly not two-dimensional. If you like a book that's going to make you happy, angry, happy, and sad, then this might be for you.

Okay...be prepared for a heck of a ride that will have you crying and wanting to stab a couple of people. And let me say that the jury is still out on Connor....

We all dream of finding our one true love and getting our HEA, but what happens when we our hearts are broken by the our one true love? Would you forgive them or would you walk away knowing that no matter how hard you try there is no way you can forget their betrayal?

Ellie was faced with that same situation and despite always loving Connor, she know that there was no way that she would ever be able to forget it nor would she be able to witness it-so she leaves her hometown to start over. Years pass and after the universe decides it's time for them to reconnect there are still emotions they both know that they could never get over no matter time and the people they had in their lives.

Like I said at the beginning, this was an emotional rollercoaster that had me all over and I know this story will stay with me. And the jury is still out on Conner. Kara~ 4 Stars

THIS IS SUCH AN INTERESTING BOOK.
Well, interesting may be the wrong word, let's say it's like a bad joke.

*********************************************

The hero cheats on the heroine and gets another woman pregnant. He tries to make it work with this other woman but it finally comes to an end.

After 4 years, the hero finally wants our heroine back and she agrees. Of course, she loves the child of the other woman very much - a constant reminder of his betrayal.

Do you think this is their happy end?
Oh no, no, no, no...

What the f*ck, right???

Oh, wait, wait... As if this is not enough, the f*cker goes and becomes a rock star. See? He gets it all, including his dream career, while the poor heroine gets nothing during her very short life.

Such a lovely and heart-warming romance, right???!!!

*********************************************

Hands down my favorite KM Golland book!!
My #1 book of 2019 for sure!
Second chance romance books are my favorite, add in the element of angst with an emotional journey and you have my perfect Storm. This one NAILED IT!!
To say Connor and Ellie's relationship/story was an emotional roller coaster is an understatement because their highs were fantastic I smiled but their lows broke my heart.
I don't want to say to much because you need to read and experience every word of this amazing story for yourself.
I will say I was a blubbering snot faced mess finishing the last few chapters BUT had heartwarming tears running down my face reading the ever so touching epilogue.
A beautiful love story I won't soon forget.

loved beginning with h/H as children/best friends, loved the h/brother relationships.
Hated middle - H cheated, stupid reason, and icing on top, conniving ow ends up pregnant. Finally H/h gets together despite her having a live in b/f, some drama from the again clingy ow then bang h has incurable illness....life threatening pregnancy but I still read on expecting a miraculous healing to no avail! not my type of romance - still expect hea after all the drama for H/h dammit! I would not have read it had I known ahead of time to be honest. This does not mean the book/writing was an issue, just don't like when my H/h dies in the end!

This author was recommended to me, by a few people. So I finally took the recommendation and... Wow, I don't know what took me so long.

This book was EVERYTHING. I love an emotional read. I am a sucker for them and this beauty certainly held ALL THE FEELS!

It's a second-chance romance, filled to the top with angst, emotion, and passion that almost crippled me. I was a mess, but in the best ways ever... It grabbed hold of my heartstrings and tugged harder than I ever expected. I found myself having to take mini breathers just so I could wipe my eyes.

Conner and Ellie's relationship is anything but perfect. They go through one hell of an emotional rollercoaster. The author would give me the best parts of them, and their relationship, scenes that made my heart flutter with joy, but then she would come along and slam me against the wall, leaving me completely winded with the unexpected emotional drop. The author knew what she was doing, and she knew she was playing with her readers' emotions, but for those like me? Well, it was emotional bliss. It had my mind on overdrive, my shock level at 100%, my heart breaking into million pieces just for the author to slowly piece it back together with jaded pieces achingly slowly.

I don't know what the author was trying to do, but whatever she was doing has won me over completely. The level of angst and emotions in this book is like I said... almost crippling.

I could sit here and give you a play by play but I think going into this story blind is the best thing to do. I'm glad I did and I am glad I took a chance on a new author.

The writing style was phenomenal and as intense as this book was, and how many times I had to take a minute to collect my emotions, I still found it flowing with ease and easy to read. If her other books are half as good as this one, then I know she will now be an auto one-click author!

6/5 Stars!!

5 OF THE BIGGEST STARS IN THE UNIVERSE!

My #1 Book for 2019!

I have been a HUGE fan of KM for many years. Ever since I was asked to review her first book, Temptation. Since then, I don't have to know what her books are about to want to read them. She's just that author for me. If her name is on it, SIGN. ME. UP!
She draws me in with her addictive storylines, witty lingo, and staying true to her Aussie self.

Unspoken Words was no different, but at the same time, it was.
In the best way.

We meet Connor and Eloise as young kids, who connect when Connor was at his lowest, having lost his best friend. We follow them through friendship, through their young love, through their heartbreaking times and through their all consuming love for each other. Each part more intense than the last. Now let me tell you, it was INTENSE!

KM delivered the most beautiful, yet soul crushing story I have ever read!
It is perfectly bitter sweet.

I turned that final page with tears streaming down my face and what felt like an elephant sitting on my chest. This book left me and emotional mess and physically hurting to the point where I messaged KM and told her that I hate her. In that moment I think I did. I mean, how dare she put me through that! But I don't really hate her. I love her. I love her words, I love her mind, and I love how she was able to make me feel every single emotion, even the shitty ones.
Only the best writers can.

So grab a box of tissues to wipe those tears, both happy and sad, get this book, and snuggles up and dive in. You won't regret it. KM might, with the amount of threats of violence that are sure to come her way. Don't actually hurt her though, we need her to keep writing her amazing words.

Wow. I am still trying to get a hold of my emotions after reading Unspoken Words. You know going into it based on the blurb that this is going to be a deeply emotional read, but you have NO CLUE! KM Golland did a fantastic job of creating her characters so REAL and RAW that you cannot help but be swept into the story and life that they are living.

There are happy times, there are sad times, there are hopeful times as Unspoken Words spans YEARS. This book is like an emotional roller coaster in the best possible ways. I definitely was NOT expecting quite a few things to go down the way that they did, but knew that there were reasons for it even if I wasn't too happy about them.

All in all if you are sucker for emotional second chance romances, Unspoken Words is a MUST read-- like LEGIT, a MUST READ for you! It is one of the most emotionally charged books that I have read in 2019. Make sure you have tissues handy because you are going to need it. I dare you to read this book and not get choked up! I give this a huge 5 outta 5 stars, now I just need to get my emotions in check!

PS: Thank you to KM Golland and Social Butterfly for allowing me the pleasure of having an advanced copy of this amazing book to read and review honestly!

I’m not sure I can find the words to express how much I loved this book as I’m not as talented in expressing myself in the written word as KM Golland is. This is the first book I read by Ms. Golland and wow!! I don’t believe I have ever highlighted so many passages in a book before to go back and read again and reflect on. Her words were like poetry, constructing an amazing story about Connor and Ellie that I will go back and read again. Although the story broke my heart many times, it also healed it again. This isn’t your typical love story. Connor and Ellie’s relationship was at times so easy yet they struggled so much. They were young and trying to figure out life, love, and how they fit into each other’s lives. But when they were at their best they were #relationshipgoals! Don’t miss this one!! It may be my favorite of 2019!

Wow! What I expected from this book and what a got, were a world apart. I always expected to like this book but for it to jump into being one of my top reads of the year, was what shocked me.

In my opinion this has to be the best work and or story by KM Golland. I was expecting the normal light hearted books that make you giggle but that most certainly wasn't what I got. I mean I can't tell you anything about this book not a damn word.

All I can tell you is that the emotions that will hit you, will knocked you off your feet. They will break you and leave you wondering about so much. I shed more than a few tears reading this fantastic book.

I couldn't honestly recommend this book anymore. It's beautiful written and I guess totally real. A wonderful heartbreaking surprise.

Absolutely beautiful! Heartfelt, heart breaking and heart mending, Unspoken Words is a love story I will not easily forget. Connor and Ellie have engraved themselves on my own heart, with their light, kindness and the joy they experience in each other.
This is a story that spans the years creating a sense of depth as we see the passage of time, the twists and turns of life and the enduring nature of love, even when it doesn't always run smoothly.
This is a book to relish. It has a strength to the story telling which will have me thinking about it for a very long time. Wonderful! 💖💖💖💖💖

This story was just sooo good. It was sweet, romantic, heartbreaking and gut wrenching. I know it’s going to be one of my new favourites. It had me in hysterics. From the first chapter I was hooked. I experienced so many different emotions through Ellie and Connor. It was a roller coaster of a ride. It made my puddle of tears, multiple times but the last chapter... well, I was a sobbing mess. This is the first time I’ve read a book by KM Golland and I’m kicking myself that I hadn’t sooner. If I could give it more than 5 stars I would.

What a book to pick as my first one by this author. My absolute favourite second chance romance of the year.

Connor and Ellie's story is one you live with them. Through friends to lovers we see them at their best and worst. From their first meeting the story had me enthralled. We are along for the ride as they grow into young adults. I rejoiced in their love and cried at their pain.

I recommend having a survival kit of wine and tissues to hand. A truly beautifully written story that will make you a believer of true unselfish undying love.

Wow....... Devastated, elated, horrified, smitten are just some of the emotions experienced in reading about Ellie's and Connors true love for one another.

The highs send you into a world of euphoria, the lows send you into depression but you come out of it all with a true sense of what love really is. The ride is raw but emotionally complete.

KM Golland I am in awe. Such talent.

PS this just might have ripped Stella out of 1st place fav.....

You're. My. Ever. After. ... K.M. Brilliance

UNSPOKEN WORDS
is absolute GOLD. from the very first chapter to the very last K.M.. Golland will take you on one HUGE emotional rollercoaster ... I'm not kidding, laughter, tears (and lots of them), anger and frustration will keep you hanging on every word that Kelly has written. Feel your heartbeat increase and slow down as this journey of Eloise "Ellie" Mitchell and Connor Bourke winds it's way into your heart, mind and soul.

Meeting one summer during their early teenage years, Ellie and Connor are inexplicably drawn to each other. His life altered by a childhood tragedy and she, the girl who was trying to get him to enjoy life once again. They form a friendship, a love, that will remain with them through to their adulthood. Life is never easy, so their road to happiness is full of many obstacles, twists and misunderstandings. But, that's how life is, and Kelly gives a totally realistic look at the struggles many friendships face.

"You have my heart, Eloise. Always and forever. It's the only heart you'll ever need."
"You're. My. Ever. After."

Kelly has written some wonderful books, but this one is pure, honest, heartbreaking and hopeful. It comes directly from the heart, two people born to be together, yet separated, at times, through stubbornness, betrayal and misunderstandings, yet there is that constant pull to be together. It is a story of a love that will never die, even when circumstances cause a separation lasting for years. Even Kelly's secondary characters add substance, they all have vital roles to play in the building of this intense love that Ellie and Connor share.

As I stated, there are tears that will be cried ... tissues are an absolute MUST HAVE, especially from Chapter 45 onwards. I wouldn't call it an "ugly cry", but it is most definitely an enotional one. And the epilogue, well it will have you tearing up again, just out of the pure delight that is in your heart.

Absolutely a MUST READ from K.M. Golland. For me, it's the best story that she has written.

Definitely a TOP THREE for 2019.

It is not just a love story ... it is a story about love.

Read and Reviewed for Reading Is Our Satisfaction.

FIVE STARS ... although I would rather give an infinite amount as UNSPOKEN WORDS is PRICELESS.
