The Last of Her Kind sets the stage for future events.

Dean (Deanna) Amarok is a changer, belonging to a pack of blood wolves who escaped being hunted to extinction. They lived in total isolation from both the human and paranormal worlds. Other changers viewed them as mythological warriors living more as animal than human. Everyone including changers, Fae, vampires and humans sought to wipe blood wolves off of the face of the earth. Dean trained as a warrior and her own achievements led to her banishment from her pack. Her uncle, the alpha, feared that she'd replace him as alpha by killing his son. After she refused to marry her despicable cousin, the alpha banished her from the only world that she'd ever known. As she walked down the mountain and away from home, the unimaginable struck and she hurried back to help. A massive attack left few survivors and Dean inherited her uncle's alpha powers. Before dying he told her to search for anyone who managed to escape annihilation.

Months pass, she traveled alone and was ceaselessly hunted. Following a vicious concerted attack, she happened on the Freewood pack of changers. At first taken into custody, she camouflaged herself as a submissive rogue wolf. Franklin Freewood, the pack alpha, offered her temporary protection from her pursuers. While living with the pack, trying to recover her strength and staying hidden, she met two changers who'd upend her search for survivors and plans for revenge.

As book one in a series, The Last of Her Kind has a lot of explaining to do. The cast of bad guys is huge. Otherworldly creatures of every stripe are tossed into the mix with few actual characters standing out from their ranks. The life that Dean had with her pack was very interesting, but short lived. The Freewood pack makes a sharp and unflattering contrast to the Amarok pack. Dean lost everything that was important to her, only to find something she never expected to uncover. Her powers are unrivalled, but her enemies are organized and fanatical.

BF Worlds has written an interesting novel. Despite being short, it covers a tremendous amount of ground to establish setting, plot and characters. The scales are weighed heavily against Dean, but she's the embodiment of heroism. Hopefully, she will find other characters willing to join her cause, if she has a chance to fulfill her destiny. Dean Rock, as she's known, stands nearly alone against a crowded field of adversaries. This plot driven novel is full of potential. Whether the storyline successfully unfolds or not will depend on future installments. I'd rate The Last of Her Kind at something less than 4 stars and look forward to reading book two.

I think that I can't wait for the sequel. this author created a supernatural world heavy on character building& interaction, not on romance. if you're looking for a romance book this isn't it. small spoiler alert, the ending is a cliffhanger, hence the need for a sequel. the book contained multiple supernatural species or variants, so you got a glimpse of the world that I hope gets flushed out in more depth in the next book. a little slow at the beginning, but worth it

Bad. It wasn't terrible, but certainly far from being what I consider good.

The synopsis got me interested. Blood wolves. I've never seen one nor read about one, but the word blood drew my curiosity. How different would they be? Do they get stronger through blood? Is it some kind of hybrid between a werewolf and a vampire? I don't know, but I would like to find out.

Even considering the somewhat bad rating, I was full of expectations. The premise in the synopsis really got to me. But damn, I didn't expect this book to be so under them. It was bad. It read like a draft, not something the author worked hard to improve and make sure there were no mistakes.

The pacing was awful. The author tried putting too much stuff in a single - and slightly short - book. It didn't work out well. We barely got to see anything about Dean's clan or their lifestyles' before Dean was forced to leave and her clan was exterminated. Pretty much every major plot happened in this book could've been an entire book by itself. Everything felt rushed.

The characters were childish and too emotive, which led to dialogues being poorly done as well. As usual, there was also the 'young master' character (even two of them); the type who acts like they own the world just because they are the future ruler of their clan.

Too much telling, not showing. This is mostly due to the dialogues being rather odd. I mean, why bother taking your time explaining things if you can just dump a page-worth of dialogue, right? I cringed when Dean was explaining her situation to her mates. Did she really have to say everything that happened to her in a single sitting? Probably not. Like, at least make them ask some questions, you know? These one-sided info dump dialogues weren't my cup of tea.

Also, her mates... She really got herself two (not one, two) mates before even starting a relationship with the first one. Why? And what are the odds that they were both living in the same city, and they both had some dating history as well? Not high, I'd have to say.

The whole thing about dominant/submissive was also weird. I understand that shifters (or Changers) are basically animals and those terms are relevant in the animal kingdom, but did it have to be like that when they are also humans? I don't mind the characters having a dominant or submissive trait, but the author made it seem like these words define their whole personality. No reason to be afraid of Dean, right? I mean, she's tall and built like a mountain, but she's a submissive, what is there to fear? That sounds rather dumb. And the fact that everyone bought her act as a 'submissive' only because no 'dominants' would ever lower themselves like that was also dumb. There was also literally no reason for her to act like that. They knew she was a Rogue, and they knew she was tough (she just killed 3 hunters, duh), so how come they actually believed in her submissive act? "Oh, she lowered her head as soon as I entered the room, she's clearly a submissive." So, why bother with the act in the first place? It even ended as fast as it came. Her mates pretty much knew the truth from the start, and she barely interacted with other characters to keep up the act.

Now, about the blood wolves. Why were they so important? I didn't get it. Is it just because they are immune to magic and aren't affected by silver? I mean, that sounds OP, but that is all? Is it really worthy of being hunted by every other race? It seems we are getting more answers in the rest of the series. At least the author did leave something for the other books, huh.

Since I am done talking about what I didn't like, it is only fair I also do the opposite, right?
I like reading fantasy when the main character is strong. And Dean is strong. No doubts about that. It didn't take long for the romance to start (although nothing happened yet). Poly! I have read little books with poly relationships in it, but I want more. The world seems interesting. Tons of shifters and other paranormal/supernatural races. And that's about it. Can't say I've enjoyed many things about this book. I think it had a nice idea and a nice plot, it just paled on the execution.

This is adventurous so far, I like the premise and its fun so far, I'm on towards the second part and would definitely recommend at least trying this. the lesbian polyamory is also a pretty rare find so if you're intrigued this is it.

Surprisingly good quick read. I enjoyed the main character, and even if I find dominant submissive thing kinda gross in a lot of werewolf fiction, it wasn’t so bad here. There was also some nice ideas and it has a fair amount of potential.

It could use some editing though. Some scenes felt pretty rushed, and the final climax came and went pretty suddenly and with little getting resolved. Formatting was also weird. Pretty sure they were using quotation marks wrong with paragraphs.

Other than that though I quite enjoyed it. Hopefully things improve in later books.

I like to read werewolf stories. This book really took off after chapter 6, after Dean's point of view also Vicky was introduced, and later Rachel. Promising and I would like to read the rest of the books. Who likes an open ending? ;) I hope that I can get the other books as well.

I went from the prequel to this first in the series and I still couldn't finish the book. Well written & edited but still not my genre. I do recommend it to those who enjoy the paranormal.
