Jason Aaron

Jason Aaron grew up in a small town in Alabama. His cousin, Gustav Hasford, who wrote the semi-autobiographical novel The Short-Timers, on which the feature film Full Metal Jacket was based, was a large influence on Aaron. Aaron decided he wanted to write comics as a child, and though his father was skeptical when Aaron informed him of this aspiration, his mother took Aaron to drug stores, where he would purchase books from spinner racks, some of which he still owns today.

Aaron's career in comics began in 2001 when he won a Marvel Comics talent search contest with an eight-page Wolverine back-up story script. The story, which was published in Wolverine #175 (June 2002), gave him the opportunity to pitch subsequent ideas to editors.

In 2006, Aaron made a blind submission to DC/Vertigo, who published his first major work, the Vietnam War story The Other Side which was nominated for an Eisner Award for Best Miniseries, and which Aaron regards as the "second time" he broke into the industry.

Following this, Vertigo asked him to pitch other ideas, which led to the series Scalped, a creator-owned series set on the fictional Prairie Rose Indian Reservation and published by DC/Vertigo.

In 2007, Aaron wrote Ripclaw: Pilot Season for Top Cow Productions. Later that year, Marvel editor Axel Alonso, who was impressed by The Other Side and Scalped, hired Aaron to write issues of Wolverine, Black Panther and eventually, an extended run on Ghost Rider that began in April 2008. His continued work on Black Panther also included a tie-in to the company-wide crossover storyline along with a "Secret Invasion" with David Lapham in 2009.

In January 2008, he signed an exclusive contract with Marvel, though it would not affect his work on Scalped. Later that July, he wrote the Penguin issue of The Joker's Asylum.

After a 4-issue stint on Wolverine in 2007, Aaron returned to the character with the ongoing series Wolverine: Weapon X, launched to coincide with the feature film X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Aaron commented, "With Wolverine: Weapon X we'll be trying to mix things up like that from arc to arc, so the first arc is a typical sort of black ops story but the second arc will jump right into the middle of a completely different genre," In 2010, the series was relaunched once again as simply Wolverine. He followed this with his current run on Thor: God of Thunder.

It's pretty awesome to discover that this new series of Star Wars graphic novels from Marvel carries the same spark that the movies have, lots of fun, the same enjoyable characters, and exciting action. Writer Jason Aaron really has a sense of what makes Star Wars great and he confidently tells this story of our rebel heroes as first they launch a daring mission to destroy an Imperial weapons depot and trying to stay one step ahead of Vader and his forces, and finally all the characters collide on the Smuggler's Moon for a climactic showdown. This book collects the first two story arcs of the series. Can't wait to read more.

This is just what I wanted. Pure fun fanboy reading. Loved it. From the art to the characters, to the plotting all of it. We jump on board straight after a new hope. We deal with a weapons based, wives, stormtipper wielding lightsaber users, vader and much more. Great fun and a must read for any Star Wars fans.

To check out my reviews: https://dancinginth3dark.wordpress.co...

I've read this series multiple times and somehow I never can get enough of it. Between the illustrations, storyline, and how Jason Aaron is able to get the accurate depictions of our classic rebels is remarkable and enjoyable. Whenever I am reading the scenes between Han Solo and Princess Leia it feels like I am watching Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher on screen and the annoying voice of Luke in the background. By far this is my favorite Star Wars comic series out of the entire franchise in terms of storyline and the behind-the-scenes revelations about our beloved characters. Star Wars takes place between Episode IV: A New Hope & Episode V: Empire Strikes Back.

The rebel alliance is celebrating their victory over destroying the Death Star but that cause of celebration is put on hold as the rebels are trying to secure a new secret rebel base to avoid detection from the Empire and to strengthen their cause. Luke, Leia, Solo, Chewbacca, C-3PO, and R2-D2 are tackling on a new mission into a weapons factory on Cymoon 1. The task is to destroy the factory and everything goes according to plan until Vader shows up and wreaks havoc. Luckily for our main characters, they succeed in destroying the factory and staying alive.

Sadly for Luke dealing with Vader again triggered his anger of seeing Obi-Wan Kenobi getting "killed" and wants to seek revenge. Luke is lost in terms of dealing with his destiny because technically he is not a Jedi because he lacks the proper training and yet he is the hero that everyone looks up to and has to carry the torch of the rebellion on his shoulders so the pressure of having people sacrifice their life for him makes it a bit unbearable for him now that he does not have his master to train him. Luke temporary discharges himself from his solo missions and decides to tap into the force and see where it guides him.

What I love about this series is we get a bit of insight into Kenobi and Luke during his years in Tatooine. Luke finds Kenobi's diary and gets to read tales of how Kenobi had to learn how to protect Luke from evil forces and yet act clever about not revealing to the world that he is a Jedi. No lightsaber, no communication of the outside world, and practically eat sand all day. It must have been difficult dealing with the guilt and pain of losing Anakin and having to place all his faith in Luke for the hope that one day he can eliminate the Empire once and for all.

Another major moment that Disney showcased a major divide from George Lucas theories is the lightsaber. When the original Star Wars came out, Lucas hadn't fully conceived the idea of who can possess the lightsaber and later on decided that only force wielders could hold one. If a human or non-force wielder got hold of one it either wouldn't work or potentially kill them. So it was weird for a moment to see characters like Han Solo and Chewbacca holding a lightsaber like a piece of cake and kind of giving the middle finger to George Lucas. Plus the whole last half of the volume felt like we were back in Episode II: Attack of the Clones which is my least favorite Star Wars film. I'm glad they didn't follow the same formula but its still too soon for me to see that awful film again.

"Book I
SKYWALKER STRIKES
It is a period of renewed hope for the Rebellion.
The evil Galactic Empire's greatest weapon, the Death Star, has been destroyed by the young Rebel pilot, Luke Skywalker.
With the Imperial Forces in disarray, the Rebels look to press their advantage by unleashing a daring offensive throughout the far reaches of space, hoping to defeat the Empire once and for all and at last restore freedom to the galaxy...."

I am always weary when it comes to comics based on TV shows or films, use Fight Club 2 as an example, and the love I have for Star Wars was the reason I have put off reading this, but the hype around this comic, and the fact it is cannon...I couldn't hold off forever, and I wish I head read it sooner, I love it. I am only 6 issues/1 volume in but it really catches the Star Wars feel and the art is brilliant. I am sure there will be plot holes and things I disagree with being a massive fan of the films but if it carries on to be this good I can probably look pass them. I cannot wait to get stuck in to this series and the many, many other series' related to this. Lets try to get these all read before The Rise of Skywalker...

This is definitely the best collection of Star Wars comics I’ve ever read. It even rivals the films. It’s rich with story, and the plot points feel vital. So often, licensed tie ins feel like some big company’s attempt to fill in gaps. This may very well be that, but it doesn’t feel like it. It feels vital and necessary, like the natural continuation of the story that began in A New Hope.

Definitely something I enthusiastically recommend to any Star Wars nut.

Komiks napsaný přímo na míru fanouškům Star Wars. Důležité a oblíbené postavy, vesmírné lodě, létající (a kráčející) stroje, světelné meče, souboje...

Incredible, Mr Aaron my goat.
I won’t talk about the art because everyone knows, rip. However story is a great start to the whole comic run. Actually unescapable Vader panel. I’d like to see different outfits for the rebels
Loved Vol 2, really looking forward to the rest of this run

The cover blurb calls this "the standard that every Star Wars comic should be held to." I haven't read many Star Wars comics, but I won't disagree.

The 12-part, 300-page story is cinematic in its storytelling and scope. While no match for ESB, it does fill in a lot of gaps between IV and V and shows how our main characters developed the relationship they have by ESB. It shows us Han making himself known as a member of the Rebellion (and already dealing with the bounty on his head from Jabba). We see Luke come face to face with Vader and escape, which only makes Vader more curious about who this kid is, and hires bounty hunters to discover his name. Luke goes on a quest to learn more about the Jedi, to try and teach himself. And Han and Leia spend plenty of highly amusing pages bickering.

It's a great story, the drawings are terrific (and capture Harrison's, Mark's, and Carrie's facial expressions extremely well), and was worth the long graphic novel read.

While this had a couple moments I didn't care for (sorry, I don't buy Fett losing to the person he lost to in the way he lost) overall I liked it. The last part of the story on Smuggler's Moon was perhaps the strongest part of the book IMHO.

Between this and Aaron's Vadar story I enjoyed Vadar more and thought if felt a little more like the classic Star Wars.

This was so good! Feeding my need for ALL THE STAR WAR. I should have known that Jason Aaron would never let me down.

This was a worthy addition to the SW canon. It retained all the action, adventure, and most importantly, heart of the movies while expanding the story and the universe.

As I finished reading the first half of Kieron Gillen's excellent run on the Darth Vader Star Wars comic, it became clear that it was tying in more heavily into the main Star Wars series Marvel put out at the same time. Initially, I wasn't going to buy the series (library sounded more manageable?), but the lure of Jason Aaron on the words and John Cassaday and Stuart Immonen on the art AND the need to read more Vader BUT not having the companion book meant I had to get this. I had to read it.

Oops I read this in one sitting.

No, but seriously this is great. Where Gillen's Darth Vader series is more focused and pulpy, this put the Star Wars into Star Wars. The premise here of "bridge from New Hope to Empire Strikes Back" is on full display here, filling in the gap with thrilling high adventure and nonstop adrenaline. All of the voices sound exactly like those characters I love so much, and it's fantastic to read Star Wars comics that, frankly, don't suck. Marvel put A-listers on this and let them do basically anything they want and it shows because it's just a nonstop playground of fun times.

Sure, Aaron's "Doctor Aphra" is not as compelling as Gillen's (to be honest, it's a little soapy but I don't fault the book too hard for it because it's not fair to compare anything to Doctor Aphra because she's INSPIRED) and the storytelling is a bit more scattershot because Aaron has to service more characters and storylines, but this is still just out of this world good. I was less than halfway through issue one before I wanted to put on both New Hope AND Empire on at the same time AND feel a need to go watch Force Awakens and Last Jedi...

And really, if we're going to go for corporate synergy, for a Disney world where all of this brand synergy locks together in ways that they feed off unhealthy cycles that make us want to go back and back and back for more...

Welp. Mission accomplished. And I'm here for it.

Hodně tomu pomáhá i skvělý vizuál. John Cassaday i Stuart Immonen jsou výborní kreslíři. Zážitek z tohoto díla prohlubuje i povedené české vydání.

Takový malý postřeh Aaron chápal Boba Fetta jako já, chladnokrevného parchanta co neváhá mučit a zabít teenegra aby splnil Vaderův úkol, ne toho divného strejdu, kterého nám naservíroval Disney v Book of Boba Fett (tohle samozřejmě vzniklo dlouho před tím).

This was awesome! This comic takes place after the events of A New Hope, and we pick up with our heroes trying to figure out the next steps to further the Rebellion efforts. Luke decides he needs to take off on his own after almost getting his friends killed because he needs to figure out how to become a better Jedi. This results in Luke getting himself into a bad situation, which the rest of the group needs to help fix.

I know a lot of people complain that Luke is too whiny of a character, but I never agreed until the first few issues of this series. He’s mopping around and feeling sorry for himself way more here than I’ve ever seen him in the movies or the canon novels I’ve read up to this point. Frankly, I’m not even sure if this takes place before or after the events of Heir to the Jedi, another canon novel that takes place between episodes 4 and 5 that I completed recently, but one where Luke notes how he was selfish and takes it on himself to improve his behavior. Fortunately, though, once he takes off on his own, this trait dissipates and he comes into his own in this comic.

Twelve issues in, and I’m definitely planning to continue. This is a really well drawn Star Wars story that is doing a great job of keeping things interesting, even knowing how most of these characters turn out since this acts as a prequel to events we’ve already encountered. I’m glad I decided to read this, and though it doesn’t feel “necessary”, it sure is a lot of fun.

My three-year-old grabbed this out of the adult graphic novel section at the library. So much Star Wars media is consumed in our household, I did little more than flip through without really looking, assume it was another retelling of the original movie, and give my blessing to check it out. Fast forward a couple days, and my stoic six-year-old is trying hard to explain how much this book has scarred him and that I need to do a better job protecting him from violent content.

Other than that, it was pretty good.

(I joke, but this was a major parenting fail, with sleepless nights book-ended by discussions of spraying blood and severed hands.)

This is only my second time reading Star Wars fiction.

The first created an exceptionally high bar to clear, as Charles Soule's run on Darth Vader was damn near perfect (and should be adapted...c'mon Disney).

This offering by Aaron and Cassaday is quite possibly just as good, and only loses small marks due to the trade kicking off with a scattershot.

Once we hit the second arc, this story is propelled forward and is exactly what a lifelong fan of the mythos hopes for.

A must read, and one that I'll continue digitally as well.

4.5 stars. Excellent continuation of the first film. Didn't realize how big of a sandbox the time period between SW and ESB actually is. Not quite as good as its sister comic, the wonderful "Darth Vader", it's still a spot-on amalgam of everything we love about the original Star Wars films. Oh, and the art is killer, to boot.

Also, the illustrated Obi Wan journal entry is worth the price of this already great comic alone.

The heroes we knew and loved. This series takes place between Episode IV (the 1st Death Star has been blown to bits) and the start of Episode V (No base on Hoth yet). It follows Luke, Han and Leia on new adventures to help the Rebellion.

This was published in 2015, so I assume it is part of the new canon of Disney's Star Wars. So far so good in keeping the characters true to their personalities (as they were at the end of New Hope).

Gone are the days of cookie cutter, nonsensical Legends content. Disney save Star Wars comics by relaunching us into post-ANH action.

Han’s wife is introduced, in a funny sub plot that adds a dynamic to the growing attraction between Han & Leia. Luke is working out his abilities & very early on in his journey as a Jedi, and the series blisters along at a great pace.

Looking forward to seeing what more the comics have in store.

Really enjoyed this 12-issue start to the Star Wars comic run. It mostly takes place right after A New Hope and does a nice job fleshing out the universe and giving all of our favorite cast members stuff to do to support (or hinder) the Rebellion.

Plenty of fan service, but not pandering.

Highly recommended for SW junkies.
