Every person who’s served or is serving in the military has been asked at least once for advice on what to expect when joining. Sometimes these questions come from parents, and sometimes from young adults who just graduated high school or college. I am continually amazed at the lack of quality information available for these individuals who have real questions—questions that if properly answered can positively change the course of a person’s life forever, and if improperly answered (or not answered at all) can rob an individual of the opportunity to experience greatness. The answers to your questions regarding joining the greatest military in the world are in these pages. Taking the Oath is a simple, comprehensive guide that will walk you step by step from being a civilian to a service member.
This book is a well written, well thought out resource for anyone who is thinking about joining the military or who knows someone who is interested in joining.
As a college professor, I have students who come in and ask advice about where to go after college, and some of these students are interested in joining the military. I love that I now have this resource to share with them. This book explains the real process of joining, answers common questions about what to expect, and explains how life really.
I especially appreciate the addition of the family and outside life components. This is something that I think is often overlooked while doing research into the topic, but that the author does a great job of addressing.
Overall a great resource, and I will keep it on my bookshelf to share with everyone I can!
Jeffrey Miller’s book, Taking the Oath was true to what I know as a mother of a former Naval Officer. I wish we had a book like this when my girls were young. Our experience with OCS was eye opening and although we had done research on what to expect, we were very naive. Reading this now, as I want to gift to family members with teenagers, gave me a lot more information than I knew from her joining and staying in the Navy for 5 years. Thanks so much for the information and guidance!
