I am going to start with the usual series spiel... This book refers to events from the previous books in this series and, although there is a decent amount of (but not too much) catch-up included so, at a push, it can be read as a stand-alone, to get the very best from it I would really advise that you read books one and two first. Also, with how this book ends (no spoilers) and to fully understand where Ryker comes from you would do well reading The Enemy Trilogy too. All five of these books are brilliant in their own rights so to be honest there is no real reason, apart from time, not to. Ok, that's done!
Ryker is still out for someone's blood; the person responsible for his wife Lisa's death. He has a few clues and one of these leads him to Mexico. As he begins his stake-out it soon becomes evident that he is not the only one watching his targets. Turning things round, he interrogates his watchers and becomes, shall we say, embroiled in a terrorist attack, the target of which is his old employer, the JIA, located back in the UK. To say that this irks Ryker more than anything would be an understatement as he has worked really hard to extricate himself from that world. Sadly, once again he has to face his past and go back home. But how small a price will it be to pay to get to his ultimate goal of revenge for Lisa's death?
I make no secret of how much I love this character. I am even warming to his new name! Well, it's been three books now so I guess I really have to play the game. Deep down in my heart though, he'll always be Logan to me but, as I have said in previous reviews, I wont keep banging on about it. Anyway, in this book we see more of him as he was in the Enemy Trilogy. When he was still working for the JIA and I found it rather nice re-connecting with that old world; even if Ryker didn't!
The plot as always is extremely tightly written and executed perfectly with many great action scenes. As per usual some are a little on the graphic side and, as this author is a very visual one for me, I had to take a wee breather several times during reading the book. Well, I did read it cover to cover in a day so it didn't really hurt! The other characters both good, bad, and somewhere in between were all well crafted and came across as very real. These books are set in a world of secrets, lies and duplicity so the majority of the characters are hiding something and their goals and motivations are not always as black and white as in some series so it is always fun trying to work out who is who and what is what and again the author didn't disappoint me in this book, keeping me on my toes throughout.
I am not going to bang on anymore apart from to say that this is definitely in my top 5 series of all time, probably even number one if I thought about it hard enough and had to make a decision so... stop reading this review and read the books already!
