Even in your hometown, you can feel like an outsider …

In the close-knit community of Carrenporth in Cornwall everyone knows everyone else’s business. Luke Carrack is only too aware of this. He’s been away for two years but nothing has changed – from the town gossips who can’t see past the scandal of his childhood, to the cold way he is treated by some of his so-called family.
The only person who seems to understand is local hotelier’s daughter Cat Trevelyan, although even Luke’s new friendship with her could set tongues wagging.
But Carrenporth is about to experience far bigger scandals than the return of Luke Carrack – and the secrets unearthed in the process will shake the sleepy seaside town to its core …

A Cornish Affair by Jo Lambert is a 2019 Ruby Fiction publication.

A unique combination of mystery and romance-

Cat and Luke DO NOT have a ‘meet-cute’ experience. From there, every encounter solidified their feelings. But, after pitching in together to help an acquaintance, they forge an unexpected bond.

However, despite the building chemistry, Luke’s history leads him to believe Cat’s family would never accept him. In the meantime, both Cat and Luke will discover secrets and revelations from their past giving them both long overdue answers. But, a tragic unforeseen series of developments will tear the couple apart- maybe forever.

I tore through this book in record time. I couldn’t put it down! The story reflects on class distinctions, family secrets, and regrets, as well as featuring a slightly angsty love story and complex mystery. There is a lot going on, and occasionally, things got a little too busy, but everything came together quite nicely in the end.

This is a compelling and engrossing story fans of contemporary romance will love, but if you enjoy romantic suspense, this one might appeal to you as well.

Overall, a lovely story, with wonderfully well drawn characters, surrounded by all that lovely scenery!

4☆ Romance, Intrigue and Mystery makes for a Compelling Read!

A Cornish Affair was a delight to read.
It was so much more than a compelling romance, it was also a cleverly plotted mystery which made for a compulsive read.

When Cat meets Luke there isn't an instant spark between them.
Cat has no interest in Luke and vice versa.
But as the two become involved their friendship blossoms as does their chemistry. If only they both could let their guard down and learn to open up and trust.

Luke has a bit of a colourful past and the village take great pleasure in making it known, just as you expect from a small village where every one, knows everyone!

No secrets can stay quiet for long!!.... or can they??

I loved watching Cat and Luke's budding friendship unravel and blossom into a romance. It wasn't rushed it was perfectly paced, given their flawed personalities and gossip they faced.
Sometimes it's refreshing to sit back and watch something unfold rather than just jump straight in.

A Cornish Affair is a Compelling Romance with a side order of Intrigue and Mystery, plenty of Secrets, Gossip, Rivalry, Family Drama and Endearing Characters.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this Gorgeous Book and definitely recommend reading it if your looking for a Romance Saga Mystery.

Thank you to Rachel Random Resources for this copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Luke and Cat’s relationship is initially characterised by mutual dislike and misunderstanding but gradually changes into something different. Hey, if it was good enough for Jane Austen in Pride and Prejudice…. The reader follows the highs and lows, the ups and downs of their relationship. I liked the back story the author created for Luke which made him an engaging character the reader (well, this one at least) was always rooting for.

The small village of Carrenporth is picture postcard Cornwall with its harbour and fishing fleet, its high street full of tea shops and small businesses and its beaches perfect for surfing not far away. And presiding over it all the luxury hotel and spa owned by Cat’s family. To begin with family relationships are the focus of the book but that all changes when a tragic event occurs. Existing loyalties – family, friends, community – are tested but new, and sometimes unexpected ones, are forged as secrets of the past are revealed. Readers may find their opinions of certain characters do a complete about turn.

A Cornish Affair, with its mix of romance and mystery and its Cornish setting, would make the perfect beach or summer read.

This was an absolute treasure. I thought it would be a love story pure and simple, but the author regaled us some suspense as well.

You were under the impression that you had it all but afterwards another lovely love story is revealed.

I am a huge fan of a mixture of friendship, love, intrigues, suspense, sadness and
of course what is a cake with the icing : the happy ending?

It was a very fluently written book and I could not put it away. I want to know what happens next, so I sincerely hope the author has started the book book already. :)

I just adored it. 5 stars

What a lovely read – and perhaps my favourite yet of the author’s books. There’s been something of a proliferation of books set in Cornish hotels recently, and I was a little afraid this book might turn out to be just one more – but it most certainly isn’t. The sense of place is excellent, the hotel and its Cornish beach backdrop vividly drawn, but the book’s real strength is perhaps in its well-developed characters and the original twists and turns of the plot.

At their first unfortunate encounter, there’s little in the way of attraction between Cat and Luke – she’s a little stiff and frosty, a tad obsessed with work, he’s the hunk lusted over by most females in the area – and when they first meet sparks fly a little. But both characters have considerably more depth, and Luke has a particularly poignant and complex back story. I really enjoyed the way their relationship progressed, despite the many obstacles in its way – and I think I might have fallen for Luke a little myself too.

But there’s a lot more to this book than the developing romance at its centre – there’s also a fascinating story of long-hidden family secrets, a whole slew of unexpected revelations, and a thriller edge that comes as a real surprise, its outcome convincing and particularly well handled.

The supporting cast in this book is every bit as well-drawn as the central pair: I particularly liked Aunt Emilia (“call me Em…”) and the Gossip Girls, and there’s a particularly special touch in the way the author portrays family relationships, both the warm and supportive and the rather more difficult.

A lovely summer read, but with considerably more to it than you’ll be expecting – written with confidence, sometimes taking you by surprise, and I very much enjoyed it.

It’s no secret that I love this author’s writing. Her characters are compelling. I do have to admit to falling in love with her male characters. Yes, even those who are seemingly bad news. So, in The Cornish Affair, set in a family hotel with the evocative Cornish landscape as a backdrop, we have lustworthy Luke Carrack. With heartbreak and scandal in his background and turning local female heads, we just know he spells delicious trouble – cue the gossipmongers. Also, that his story is going to be a poignant one. His first encounter with Cat Trevelyan doesn’t go well. Let’s just say that Cat had one of those ‘please beam me up’ moments. As a result, Luke is less than impressed, rude and abrasive, in fact, which of course, rubs Cat up entirely the wrong way and causes the friction to fizz between them. Like I say, delicious. How could you not want to get your teeth into that?

A Cornish Affair, however, is about much more than the romance. Mystery and family secrets abound, and there are some fabulous twists, together with a thriller edge that really make this book stand out. Add that to Jo Lambert’s superb characterisation, and you have a story with real depth. Look out for Aunt Emelia – definitely a case of appearances deceive. As always with this author’s books, the resolution is perfect.

If you want cleverly written romance with intrigue and page-turning suspense, I would highly recommend A Cornish Affair.

This was my first book by this author and dos enjoy it but at times found it slow but could be because I was tired. It's full of intrigue and mystery and romance and is a good read.
Care port his a small Cornish town and Luke has been away for a number of years but when he comes back he can see nothing has really changed and could the scandal still be talked about from his childhood and how will his parents be with him. Cat is the only person who understands him but that could get people talking. Sadly something very big is set to change the village and will they solve the problem or not.

Sometimes everyone in a small, close-knit community may think they know everyone else's business but sometimes they get it totally wrong! This is a story where assumptions of guilt have been made and never really questioned. It involves many who really should have known better, including so-called family and friends. However, there are more surprise developments in this drama packed story, which even includes dark, family secrets and plenty of twists and turns! This is not a sweet romance. It is a story with suspense, intrigue, misdirection and proved to be a highly entertaining and enthralling read.

There are some fantastic characters in this story! Aunt Emilia and her gossiping cronies add some humour initially but angst later. The relationship between Cat and Luke gets off to a bad start but as they learn more about each other it develops despite the multitude of obstacles put in its path. Luke's back story is especially heartbreaking but is only revealed as the story progresses. There are a diverse range of family relationships. There are characters you'll love and others you'll hate. I really liked how one is totally changed by his experiences. Cat proves to be a loving, loyal and resourceful supporter but still her lack of trust and assuming the worst has potentially serious detrimental impacts for all concerned.

This is a story I have no hesitation in highly recommending to anyone who enjoys well crafted, suspense-filled romance and mysteries. It is a story to keep you on the edge of your seat as the dramatic secrets from the past are revealed but only after wrongful accusations are made and some people are made to face up to take responsibility for their own actions and lies.

I requested and was gifted a copy of this book and this is my honest opinion after choosing to read it and thoroughly enjoying doing so.

I've spent an enjoyable couple of afternoons in the beautiful Cornish town of Carrenporth, getting to know Cat Trevelyan, whose family owns one of the local hotels, and the blissfully handsome, Luke Carrack, whose return to the town, after an absence, is causing something of a consternation amongst the ladies.

Throughout A Cornish Affair there's a real sense of community, and the little Cornish town comes alive with all of its quirky characters. I especially enjoyed getting to know Cat and her family, and of the role they play in the local community, and in particular, the antics of Aunt 'Em' and her friends made me smile, and yet, it is in Cat's burgeoning relationship with the enigmatic, Luke Carrack where the story starts to get a more complicated romantic edge.

Whilst the story is undoubtedly about love and relationships, and believe me, Cat and Luke don't make things easy for themselves, it's also about family, friendship, and the ties of loyalty and of the deep and, sometimes, complicated secrets which can so often linger if left unchallenged for far too long.

I enjoyed the way the author immerses the reader and makes everything feel so believable, so that the pages almost turn themselves. I was really sorry to say goodbye to all of the characters, especially Cat and Luke, but I guess that's the sign of a good story which has been well told.

A Cornish Affair is a lovely summer story which is such a joy to read on a lazy afternoon. So tuck yourself away in your favourite shady spot, with a glass of something ice cold to hand, and escape to the Cornwall of this talented author's imagination

There seems to have been a lot of books set in Cornwall recently and it's not hard to see why. With beautiful sandy beaches, sparkling blue seas, and expanses of azure sky, it's a beautiful place. Even on a stormy day there is something wild and appealing about the Cornish coastline. And I'm sure the current obsession with Poldark has done much to enhance Cornwall's popularity too. Although the setting of this book is important, and beautifully described by the author, it is the characters and relationships which really make this book.

Things between Cat and Luke don't get off to a promising start after a case of mistaken identity sees her coming into rather closer contact than she would otherwise have intended! Luke's furious reaction puts the two at odds. But at a function at her hotel she sees another more caring side to Luke and a tentative friendship begins to develop.

There is a big rivalry between Luke and his cousin Jordan, although jealousy might be a better word to describe Jordan's feelings. Following a family tragedy, Luke was brought up by his aunt and uncle. Unlike the rather spoiled Jordan, he works hard, takes all opportunities that come his way and seems successful in all he undertakes. This is just another reason for Jordan to dislike him.

Aunt Em and her 'gossip girls' deserve a mention. Elderly Aunt Em feels rather without purpose in her life and her so-called friends seem to encourage her to get involved in all kinds of situations which don't work out well for her and antagonise the local community. Some of these were quite funny to read and the scene outside the local shop featuring a wobbly chair and a cucumber springs to mind! I did rather feel for Aunt Em and was pleased when she had the opportunity to enrich her life and that of the community.

Jo Lambert writes about her characters with real depth and emotion. There is a beautifully done love story at the heart of the book. In fact, there is more than one love story but that is one of the surprises of the book so I'll say no more about it. In fact, there is a lot more to this book than its lovely cover may suggest. Yes there is sun, sea, sand and... romance. But there are also family secrets uncovered, beautifully written friendships, a crime to be solved and a trip to Italy along the way. I really enjoyed reading this book and will look forward to more from this author in the future.

This story of Cat and Luke is an emotional roller coaster of love, trust, and secrets. The many plot twists and one curious mystery kept my interest and moved the story along at a good pace. I liked the main characters Cat and Luke, though they were a bit dramatic and prone to overreacting. Most of the supporting characters were quite likable, with a few nasty ones who stirred up trouble and kept things interesting. With a satisfying conclusion, this was an enjoyable read that was hard to put down.

I found this to be a book that has a little bit of everything - romance, drama, dark family secrets and plenty of twists and turns throughout which made for such an entrancing read that I loved!

Set in Cornwall, the stunning backdrop adds to the whole scene and you're soon immersed in the lives of these characters - mainly Luke and Cat. Luke Carrack has been away for a couple of years and seems to have a bit of a reputation with rumours about him never far away, so he's happy to keep to himself and just try and get on with his life.

Cat Trevelyon is the local hoteliers' daughter and is back to start the events managment job at the hotel and her first meeting with Luke gets things off to an interesting start! Definitely a case of mistaken identity which breaks the ice but soon starts off a connection between them - they both seem to have trust issues so that helps them bond and they find it very easy to talk to one another although you still get the feeling they're holding things back from one another.

Add to the mix the local gossips who are out to cause trouble and it really sets things up for some very intriguing circumstances and to delve into the past which brings up a lot of bad feeling, jealousy and some startling revelations.

I really enjoyed the whole feel of this book - it never felt twee or too light as it dealt with some serious and darker issues which made it feel more real and added to the tension. In Luke and Cat you have 2 very relatable characters who you warm to through their attitudes to life and the things they find themselves facing.

An excellent read and I look forward to more from this author in the future.

This turned out to be a heady mixture of romance, mystery, family saga and a touch of murder. There are a lot of ingredients to catch your attention. First of all, there is some thoughtful characterisation- not just with the main protagonists but with the full cast. My favourites have to be the redoubtable Aunt Em and the loathsome Evie. You start to realise that there are some family secrets lurking beneath the surface, which adds to the intrigue.

I also liked the family set up at the hotel where they all gave each other space. At times, I did lose patience with Cat as she refused to listen and just took off but overall, I was always rooting for her. With a beautiful setting and lots of family drama, I found this to be a thoroughly enjoyable read- just right for the Summer.

In short: Romance and intrigue in equal measures.

I really enjoy Jo's books and this one is no exception. She has a way of making her characters jump off the page, following with anticipation as we see how Cat and Luke's relationship develops only for the rug to be pulled from under our feet as a misunderstanding causes them to separate. Cat has her own journey of self-discovery and it is only when she finds out who she is that the two can possibly think about a future together. The story is set partly in Cornwall and partly in Italy with lovely descriptions of both. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

My first reaction to any book is always the cover, it’s what draws me in to purchase or turns me away with a ‘not for me’ thought. First of all, the cover for A CORNISH AFFAIR is simply beautiful but it also gives me a picture of what the ocean is truly like. It can be calm and beautiful on the surface while danger lies beneath those incredible waves. And that impression continued when I open the pages and entered Jo Lambert’s world. There is far, far more to this story than first meets the eye.

Cat and Luke don’t exactly make the greatest first impression on each other but that quickly changes to a casual friendship that has the chance for more – if either of them didn’t already have serious trust issues. Their relationship has a slow burn feel to it for me, but we all know what happens when things simmer – eventually, they burst into flames.

It’s unfortunate that the small seaside town of Carrenporth is full of gossips who love nothing more than making trouble and passing along often misinformation. Because of Luke’s past, those biddies (and you don’t have to be female to be a gossiping biddy, IMO) have lots to talk about, and perhaps his growing relationship with Cat as well. Although, soon there will be far more interesting and developing gossip to spread about as secrets come to light, and danger makes an entrance to this quiet town.

Just like the ocean, A CORNISH AFFAIR has so much beneath the surface with twists, turns, and surprises galore. I was captured from beginning to end and would not hesitate to recommend this one to any Romantic Suspense or simply Romance reader. You’ll have quite an experience. And perhaps, like me, will end up wishing that there are more stories to come for there are very interesting secondary characters I wouldn’t mind knowing more about.

*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher, Choc Lit / Ruby Fiction with no expectation of a positive review. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*

A gorgeous cover for this engaging anytime read, whether at home or on holiday, summer or even winter.

When I sat down to read A Cornish Affair the wind was battering torrential rain against the windows. So it was a treat to forget about the dismal weather outside and be transported to summertime in Cornwall.

With a host of interesting and some annoying characters, the plot is set around a family run hotel in Cornwall. Aunt Emelia is everyone's idea of a dotty relation but, in this case, appearances are quite different.

Cat Trevelyan and her brother are jointly running the hotel when she meets Luke Carrack newly returned to Carrenporth. Cat and Luke are drawn to each other but both have serious trust issues. Their new relationship becomes strained to breaking point by the constant malicious rumours spread by village gossips. However an unexpected person is keen to bring them back together.

Romance and mystery combined with sunshine, all the components for a satisfactory read, particularly when it's pouring with rain.

In our dreams we’ve all been to Carrenporth, a Cornish town where everyone knows your name, your business and all your secrets. The novel is told from the hero and heroine’s (Luke and Cat) point of view which really gave me an insight into what the other was thinking. I empathised with Cat who, despite having everything she could want, was a Trevelyan and of great interest to the folk of Carrenporth. At times it seemed as if she lived in a goldfish bowl. Then we meet Luke - quite the hero, even though Cat doesn’t see that in the beginning. Luke has a particularly poignant and complex back story and the author showed great skill in revealing this - and developing the role of those secondary characters who added to the story. Superb characterisation all round, especially Aunt Em and her 'gossip girls' who kept me amused with their antics. I love multi-generational stories but am not too keen on sagas, so well done to the author for not going down that particular road. The novel went beyond where I expected it to go. There’s a murder and, after the murderer is revealed, there’s another twist and plot thread (totally unexpected) which made me sit up, just as I thought I was coasting towards the end. Is there a sequel planned? I hope so, as I for one would certainly buy it.

My favourite part of this book is the third quarter, where an event that shouldn't be mentioned to avoid spoilers gives importance to some characters who seemed more secondary before, but there were things I particularly liked in the other parts too (including the last plot twists) even if I must say it took a while for me to really get into the story, probably because the first chapters include several backstory chuncks (at least they show well-developed character backgrounds, which I appreciate) and also because, when Cat first meets Luke, he appears very unpleasant (I did like the funny side of that scene, though). And Aunt Emelia has to be my favourite character. She appears quite silly at first but I liked her role in the story later.

The cover of this book should have been a good clue - a calm blue sea but you cannot see what is happening under the surface.
When I started reading I was expecting another jolly story set in Cornwall. I did not at first warm to the heroine, privileged, job in the family business, no real problems - why would she be interesting? However very quickly it became apparent that there was definately more to this story than saving the world by baking at the seaside. The latter can be very enjoyable, don't misunderstand me, but here were more twists and turns, more secrets, more family history and the ever watchful eyes of a small community. Excellent. I hope following books are as enjoyable.

Why is Luke Carrack the talk of the town? What is his real story? This is a great tale of two potentially star crazed lovers, with enough twists and turns to keep you thoroughly entertained. I loved the characters of Luke and the local hotelier’s daughter Cat, and just throw in some secrets and crimes set against a Cornwall background. Thoroughly enjoyed this first novel by Jo Lambert and I highly recommend it. This is a new author to keep an eye out for!

This is a lovely romance set in Cornwall. The lead characters are poles apart in all ways, but their love ties them together. Cat and Luke have to go through a lot of things before it looks like they will be together, then they are torn apart. Following their uphill struggle you feel deeply for them. Problem follows problem and misunderstandings abound. A final sting in the tail, keeps the pages turning. A lovely long book which I thoroughly enjoyed reading.

The story follows the developing relationship between Luke Carrack and Cat Trevelyan, set against the fictional Cornish seaside town of Carrenporth. At first I thought it was just going to be a Pride and Prejudice styled romance, and I will be honest, I was a little disappointed at the prospect, and so I was delighted when it unfurled and became so much more. The story took me to completely unexpected places and I loved that I never really knew where it was going next.
This wide scope really appealed to me, and whilst Cat and Luke are at the centre of the novel and its events, there is a real sense of community and family which comes through strongly. There is a large cast of characters and each contribute wonderfully to the story and the feel of a truly tight-knit community making the day to day feel realistic. I really found myself drawn into life in Carrenporth.
The plot is full of twists and turns, and for a while I was fooled into thinking that this was just a lovely summer romance – then began the twists! From this point on I was hooked and I enjoyed that the secrets that kept on tumbling forth – some major, some smaller, some I guessed and many left me turning pages to find what happened next.
There are also some brilliant characters; Aunt Em in particular was someone who initially jarred with me, but by the end I loved her! I did find Cat to be the most frustrating of women – I liked her, I really did, but I probably spent half of the novel wanted to shake her and the other waving fluffy pom poms and cheering her on! But that I cared enough to have a response to her, shows how invested I became.
Although it initially took me a while to get into (and under different personal circumstances, I don’t think we would have had any issues!) I ended up falling for A Cornish Affair, and whilst it is the first book I have read by Jo Lambert, I do not think it will be the last. If you’re looking for a romance with lashings of intrigue to keep you company this summer – this could well be the book for you!

1.75 ⭐️ It was okay. I almost DNF about 1/3 the way through, but was waiting for a library book to arrive so continued. I will certainly not recommend it nor read it again. I gave it a bit higher rating for those readers who love any romance would probably like this one.

The "difficulties" were resolved way too easily, or were dragged out far too long and ridiculously so.
I did like Auntie Em's story line . . . with one exception that I won't spoil by mentioning it.
The whodunnit was resolved way too easily. It was as though the author wanted to put all the characters in tough situations, but then give them all an easy way out.

There was one very laughable mistake that an editor should have caught. The main character and her *brother* are said to be "identical twins", an impossibility as the definition of identical means, IDENTICAL and male-female twins are not the same gender, and therefore not identical.

I really enjoyed this book.

The storyline behind Luke was brilliant - I didn't see it coming but there was one point where I thought - hmmm I wonder (but I won't spoil that for you)

Aunt Emilia - what a character she is (although she's a bad judge of character when it comes to some people).

Cat lives and works with her Father and twin brother at Tarwin House - which was successfully turned into a profitable hotel by her beloved grandfather. It is one of the top 4 star hotels in the south west.

The story draws you in. The characters are easily imagined and relatable. There were some fantastic twists and turns in this book. Some I guessed - others were a complete surprise.

I recently read A Cornish Affair by Jo Lambert and was instantly transported to Cornwall, a county I know well. I really enjoyed the locations Jo chose for her story, and I got to like her characters so much, Cat and Luke especially - her main characters - and their love story. Jo manages to create a little world in her books and we are looking in and watching the action. Another story I think would make a fab 'made for TV,' movie. Congrats on yet another fab read. Keep them coming.
