Spiritual Freedom: God's Life-Changing Gift

Rate this book
Foreword by Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, O.P.

"Be men and women of freedom! But Human freedom is a freedom wounded by sin. It is a freedom which itself needs to be set free. Christ is its liberator."
—John Paul II, from the Introduction

No matter where you are on your journey of faith, God wants you to be freer. "There is always more freedom, more grace, more forgiveness, more mercy, more God," Father Dave Pivonka says.

But can you be freer than you already are? Maybe you're in a position to do whatever you want, whenever you want, the common definition of freedom. Maybe you've tried to free yourself from bad habits, had no luck and decided to accept the status quo. Maybe you want greater freedom but can't quite get there. Maybe you feel like God has given up on you and freedom is the least of your concerns.

Spiritual Freedom not only defines the true nature of freedom, it also gives you the practical tools you need to achieve the conversion, healing and restoration that God has for you. Through Scripture, teaching, stories, humor and questions for reflection, Father Pivonka will inspire you to embrace the truth of who you really are, a son or daughter of a God who made you in freedom, for freedom.

Imagine a sovereign God who wants us to be every bit as free as He is!
This book delves into freedom in a unique way. The author explores freedom as our birthright as sons and daughters of God. The book describes radical freedom as our natural state, and then goes on to describe how and why we received this precious gift from God, how we lose it, and how we can regain it.
The writing style is direct and straightforward, and the author includes interesting anecdotes to illustrate his points, and even throws in a dash of humor here and there, a rare thing in a book that takes on a weighty spiritual topic. Each chapter concludes with a brief selection from Scripture that highlights an important aspect of freedom.
The book was so interesting and easy to read that I blasted right through it, but I think it is a rich text that will be worth rereading.
I had previously heard Father Dave Pivonka speak at some retreats. He is a powerful speaker, and I was pleased to discover that his gift carries over to his writing as well.

I’m currently studying with a group of people via Zoom, The Wild Goose. This is a set of videos that Father Pivonka has put together. We are learning the impact that the Holy Spirit has on us: His role in our lives. It’s a process to acknowledge and open our eyes to how the Holy Spirit is and has been available to us. This book is a very personal summation of these thoughts.

I read this book to my father who has Alzheimer’s and is confined to a wheelchair. It would probably be more impactful if I had read it myself over a shorter period of time. I was looking for books to read to him that would bring him peace. I’m not sure I ever really got the idea of being “free”.

Spiritual Freedom: God's Life-Changing Gift by Fr. David Pivonka is a spiritual self-help book on living a happy and fulfilling life. Each chapter has an aspect of spiritual freedom followed by a verse of scripture, some questions and a prayer starter.

Fr. Dave tells us that the fundamental freedom we as humans are created with is a freedom to choose. We can choose how we relate to each other, what ills, slights and hurts to hang on to, and, most importantly, how to love. We are free because God created us to be free and because God will continue to free us if we ask to be freed from the bondage that we are under because of our many sins. We will be free if we ask the Holy Spirit (that much-ignored third Person of the Blessed Trinity) to breathe His freedom into our souls.

Fr. Pivonka delves deep into scripture to illustrate the points each chapter is making. He tries to disabuse us of our misconceptions about who God is and what He wants from us, about who we are and what part we play in our own lives.
