OUR STORY A beat-up old car, a few dollars in the pocket and a sense of adventure. In 1972 that’s all Tony and Maureen Wheeler needed for the trip of a lifetime – across Europe and Asia overland to Australia. It took several months, and at the end – broke but inspired – they sat at their kitchen table writing and stapling together their first travel guide, Across Asia on the Cheap. Within a week they’d sold 1500 copies and Lonely Planet was born. One hundred million guidebooks later, Lonely Planet is the world’s leading travel guide publisher with content to almost every destination on the planet.
Journeying around the world--and taking readers to renowned surf spots—this captivating and thoroughly entertaining book is…well, mind expanding. And that’s coming from someone (me) who is not a surfer.
Does this book make me want to drop what I’m doing and hit the waves? Almost. Actually, this book reminds me of how little I know about everything—including surfing.
Although I’ll never be a surf bro, I love the ocean and deeply respect those who seek a connection with nature. All the stories here take in the grandeur and grace that can be found among the waves and beyond. There’s a spiritual thread evident to all the stories. That’s something I’ve appreciated before, in books like William Finnegan’s Barbarian Days; and in films like Endless Summer, and more recently, Step Into Liquid.
When I was only half-way through the book, I just had to write about how completely enjoyable it was. Books like this one really open up one’s view.
My only beef? I needed a glossary to help with the surf lingo. That’s cool, because my online research into what some of the words meant only deepened my appreciation for surf culture.
