The Chronicles’ Companion: Joy Through a Wardrobe is the first work in a series of poetic reflections that will be enjoyed by children as well as adults, and students as well as scholars. This poetic Companion series calls its reader to further enjoy and better understand the essence which frames each book in C.S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia. As the first work in the Companion series, Joy through a Wardrobe is paired with and reflects the first work in the Chronicles series, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, by highlighting the key characteristics in each chapter of The Lion. These poems and reflections act as a source of encouraging words that help the reader navigate the path to joy which Lewis strategically mapped out on every page of The Lion.
I won a copy of this companion piece in a Goodreads giveaway. Thank you!
Catchings wrote this to be read alongside The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. I have read that book dozens of times and know it well, so chose to read this companion as a stand-alone.
The introduction with all of the terms, definitions, and explanations was a bit confusing. Once I got into the piece itself, the structure made sense. Each chapter matches with one from Lewis’ work. Catchings created 3 summary poems to pair with each chapter, as well as a brief essay that takes on his viewpoint and reflection upon the theme or issue that is central to that chapter. I enjoyed the poems and do think they gave me a slightly different perspective on Lewis’ novel, but could have done without the essays. They felt to me as if I was being told how to think rather than to question, consider, and develop my own ideas and take.
Will I pick up future companions for one of my all time favorite series of books? Probably not. But I do see how these could be useful jumping off points for discussion for future readers, families, etc.
