It's good luck to earn the king's regard...isn't it?
Seamaster journeyman Rasim's quick wits have helped to save his beloved home city and earned him the dubious honor of studying with the diplomatic Sunmasters. But not everyone is happy that magical knowledge is being shared, and when the king orders the guilds back to the Northlands on a sensitive political mission, it may well cost Rasim his life.
Seamaster-born, Sunmaster-trained, Rasim now faces a fight that can only be won by a Stonemaster...
CE Murphy began writing around age six, when she submitted three poems to a school publication. The teacher producing the magazine selected (inevitably) the one she thought was by far the worst, but also told her–a six year old kid–to keep writing, which she has. She has also held the usual grab-bag of jobs usually seen in an authorial biography, including public library volunteer (at ages 9 and 10; it’s clear she was doomed to a career involving books), archival assistant, cannery worker, and web designer. Writing books is better.
She was born and raised in Alaska, and now lives with her family in her ancestral homeland of Ireland.
The formula is clearly established in this series by book 2. Rasim, having found favor with two monarches, keeps making enemies. And so while off on a sea voyage he gets separated from the fleet, has adventures, and makes more allies. He is a hard sea witch to kill. And as the title suggests he's more than just a sea witch. As a reader it's pretty clear Rasim is gifted and slowly coming into real power, but his own humility and insecurity is blocking his abilities. It's also becoming dangerous to be powerful as attempts to kill him become more numerous. I am enjoying the descriptions of the elemental magic, and even though this is technically a middle school book series it is more than interesting enough for this adult. There were a few type-o's in my Kindle version.
Rasim is convinced his magic is minor. But, supernatural things happen when he lets his emotions go, and his imagination free.
Now, he is learning more about himself as he moves through the world. He has lines he won’t cross and rules he won’t break, no matter what anyone thinks about him.
This series is taking a small underpowered sailor on his way to becoming a multi powered mage. This would make a superb anime series. The scene where a battered ship of escaped slaves meet the northern fleet with waterworks show of dazzling artistry deserves recorded images as well as words. Well done.
The second in the series kept up the fantastic pacing and world building! The rules of magic are always important in books, to keep with consistency and not have someone suddenly OP when it’s time to face the BBEG. CE Murphy has done such a great job in giving her characters very strong legs to stand on and shoes to grow into.
The story is progressing very nicely! The way magic is described is very beautiful. The world building is complex, but still very understandable. I am very interested to see what happens in the next with the discovery made in this book. The interaction between magic, politics and race is also another feature of this book.
Very enjoyable story that is fast paced and hard to put down. Characters are well-written and their stories
Wonderful story with compelling characters and a great (and original) story. I can't wait for book 3 of the series. My only complaint is that two years have gone by since book one.
