Red Order #1

Feyness, Ti vedo

Rate this book
Sinossi
Ti vedo. Vedo la tua anima. Vedo ogni tuo peccato. Vedo la tua aura intrisa di sangue e di malvagità. La maggior parte delle persone sono intrinsecamente o buone o cattive. Qualcuno sta in bilico fra luce e oscurità.

USA Today Bestselling Author, ES Carter, lives in Cardiff, South Wales. The home of castles, dragons and folklore.
Her family joke that she was born with a book in her hand, and the urge to write stories soon followed.
At eleven, she won her school's literary prize. At ages fourteen to sixteen - her poetry phase after falling in love with Dylan Thomas and e.e. cummings - she had a few poems published, but life, love and family overtook her dreams, and she was in her thirties when she began the scary journey of self-publishing.
Her debut and internationally best-selling series, 'Love by Numbers', are a set of interconnected stand alone romances, all with varying themes of love. From second-chance to romantic comedy and M/M romance. These stories do not need to be read in order, in fact, she is often guilty of advising readers to start at the last book and work their way back through.
Contemporary romance is not the only genre she writes, her second series, 'The Red Order', is as dark and twisted as you can get, but there is beauty there too if you can open your eyes and look.
With many more stories bursting to be set free, she hopes you stay along for the ride.

Genre: Dark Erotic Romance
Type: Standalone
POV: First Person - Dual
Rating:

Faye Craven was no stranger to the dark. As the daughter of Alec Craven, the king of The Red Order, a debauched secret society, her childhood was marred by the vileness of the society. One fateful day, she was both gifted and cursed with the ability to see beyond people's facade, to the very depth of their soul. An ability that could help her or break her.

Cole Hunter was Alec's trusted second in command. As a gift, he became Faye's new owner free to do what he pleased - breaking her down to the core. And with his brother Luke, Cole had a master plan that had been in works for a long time. However, Faye's presence in his life could be a complication he didn't need.

When I read the blurb, I was highly intrigued by the sinister vibe. It was a beacon to my dark soul luring me to its infinite depth. Well, it certainly fed the monster within haha!

My cock aches for her to hate me. And hate me she will.

Cole was ambitious and vindictive. He was feared and revered by the society members because he was void of emotions. Learning about his past, you would understand why he was that way and I actually have a level if respect for him on how he handled it back then.

Faye might seem fragile but years of living with darkness and depravity accorded her with inner strength. She knew when to submit and when to strike for her own advantage.

One should always beware of the wolf in sheep’s clothing.

I really like Luke because he's the darker brother not only physically but also in personality. Grim, another brother of theirs was even more off balanced but he had a certain dark/twisted charm to make him likeable.

In tenebrosity, there is protection. In lightlessness, there is strength. And in submission, there is power.

The storyline was a little linear for my liking, but I really like how the characters stayed true to themselves no matter what their motivation. They started dark, and stayed dark. There's nothing worse than a dark character turning all light and fluffy (a.k.a. pussy whipped lol!).

I see you. I see your sins. I see the very fabric of your soul. It’s beautiful and horrifying. It’s painful yet soothing.

Feyness is a story of a couple unwittingly thrown into the darkness and how they cope and survived using each other. It would appeal to people who aren't afraid to play in the dark :p

Note 1: This book is bloody and graphic.
Note 2: The colored fractals in the teasers have meanings. You'd understand if you read the book ;)

"She was mine, and I was hers. Born of villainous fathers, and birthed by long-dead mothers, our lives entwined by blood and death, our bonds forged by vengeance."

this.....gawd looks soo good. Thank Betul for recommending. I've read one of this author book before and I like her writing. Can't wait to read this.

~~~~~BLURB~~~~~
I don't see dead people.
I see you.
I see every incarnation of you.
I see the history of your soul.
I can see your aura soaked in the blood of your previous lives.
Most people are inherently good or evil.
Some flit between darkness and light.
Few can change the fabric of their essence; it's a fight that most are too weak to win.
He was once darkness.
An evil so pure that his very soul is black and yet I am drawn to him like a moth to a flame.
Some days, I feel like I am drowning, the waves of my feelings stealing the very air from my lungs.
Other days, I feel nothing at all.
I'm unsure which is worse; gasping for air or dying from this thirst.
Can you learn to breathe underwater when you find someone worth drowning for?
Feyness is a dark standalone.
Readers of a sensitive disposition may want to step away from the book.
Step away, nothing to see here.
Readers who like to dance on the dark side, come on in and enjoy the ride.
Faye Craven was raised in an environment where depravity lurked at every corner. With her father, Alec Craven, being the ruler of the Red Order, Faye learned at a young age what her role would be within the society. Knowing Faye’s future, her mother tried to save her but instead Faye was left with a different kind of gift.
“I see you. I see your sins. I see the very fabric of your soul.”
Cole Hunter has risen in the bloody ranks of the Red Order to being Alec Craven’s right hand man. Fueled by his own motivations of revenge, Cole’s goal is a simple one yet complicated to execute and he will use all his connections to succeed. However, there is one contingency he didn’t count on having in his corner.
“Her eyes are fixed on mine, and the feeling is unsettling; it’s as if she’s not just looking at me, she’s looking inside of me. Does she see the beast beneath the pretty veneer?”
As the inevitable day comes, Faye is slated to become Cole’s bride. With all her training and manipulation, she is ready to protect herself. Quickly, she learns more about her new husband and his ambitions, but for Cole, trusting a Craven can be deadly.
“I’m not a hearts and flowers man. If I ever offer her a heart, it will be warm and still beating after carving it …”
With swift action, the percolating plot starts to boil with Cole and Faye acting as a unit despite some resistance from Cole’s brothers, Luke and Grim. If their plan fails, it would mean their own demise. Each step counts and no one will be spared from their treasonous alliances. As Cole’s focus and vengeance is honed to predatory perfection, Faye also finds her inner strength and begins to trust what she’s always known.
“It’s not weak to admit your want, Faye. Strength comes from being honest with yourself about your needs.”
Fighting together and learning more about Alec Craven, helps to forge the feelings Cole has been resisting with Faye. Even though Faye recognizes Cole’s blackness, she is also able to make the distinction between evil and emptiness. It’s when Faye begins to see more than she ever has that seals her connection to Cole.
“Even though you fight it, I can smell that you want me, Faye. It pours from your skin and drives me fucking crazy.”
Cole is a dominant character with his broody ways but he also wants to feel emotions he buried long ago. For Faye, hiding her feelings was always her way to survive. With these two broken characters unified in similar tragedies, they come together to prove they can be more than just whirls of black and grey.
In this book, the action is non-stop and the underlying plot of revenge kept me interested. As for Faye’s innate ability, I was very intrigued by her gift and the meaning of what she could see. With Luke and Grim, they certainly added to the plot and I’m looking forward to reading more about how their stories continue.
For those who seek a story about damaged characters, revenge, action and avarice, I recommend Feyness.
4 “ Faye & Cole “ stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
She was mine and I was hers.
Born of villainous fathers, and birthed by long-dead mothers, our lives entwined by blood and death, our bonds forged by vengeance.
Well this book was one hell of a dark read and I enjoyed every single minute of this wild ride. It’s been a while since I read a dark romance novel and this was the right choice. It was dark, gritty, action-packed, suspenseful with the right amount of romance thrown in. The chapters were intricately woven and kept me at the edge of my seat.
The blurb doesn’t give you much away, I thought it might turn into a paranormal romance but it was the opposite. The story is unique and the world that the author created is edgy, gruesome and definitely intriguing.
The red order is a secret society of the rich people, set in London, with two families as the head named the craven and the hunters. Both the families have bad blood between them and many dark secrets of the past which we learn as the story progresses. Not much detail was given about their businesses except that they were billionaires and were involved in criminal activities such as prostitution and sex slaves.
The first chapter opens with our heroine Faye Craven getting married to our hero Cole Hunter as she is basically sold to him by her own father as a gift for his loyalty but Cole definitely has other plans in store.
What makes this book unique is that Faye has the ability to see people’s auras and also visions about their lives by just a touch and she got this ability after an accident of which I won’t go into much detail but you’ll understand it better if you read the book. She has got a painful past suffered at the hands of her father who sees her as nothing but a pawn, she was also molested as a child. Even after everything she went through, there’s still an innocence to her and she’s strong willed, her spirit is not yet broken.
Be the breeze, float away.
A mantra that doesn’t work in Cole’s presence. His very essence demands my attention.
Cole too had a horrible childhood which turned him into a killer and a hardened man with an aura of darkness around him. He was intense, intimidating with a face of an angel. Faye was attracted to him from the first time she saw him. I hated him in the beginning for how he treated her at times but after every layer was revealed and little glimpses in his past, I could sympathise with him.
They both suffered at the hands of their fathers and lost their mothers which made them connect and that made them perfect partners for each other. The romance blossomed between them so beautifully, their journey had ups and downs. In the end, he protected her and saved her.
With all the action going on in the book, there wasn’t any shortage of steam. They had amazing sexual chemistry. The scenes were hot. The writing was almost lyrical with many twist and turns. The author doesn’t leave out any details.
”Say it, Princess. Let go and say it.” His scorching breath, so sweet on my tongue, demands my submission, and I finally let go.
“Take me.”
I am eager to get my hands on Luke’s book too who is Cole’s brother. I am definitely intrigued by Luke and want to see what goes on in his mind behind his calm facade. I can’t wait to dive into the next book which will be about Grim and I’ll bet it will be just as dark and gritty. ♥️
"I may not wear a collar and lead, but I am just as much a prisoner; owned, bartered, dead inside."
Feyness is the first book I read by ES Carter but it definitely won't be my last! I was hooked right away. I started reading the book and I got so excited because I just knew this book would be one crazy ride. The bar was set high for me from the beginning. I am pleased to announce that this book met my expectations. It was darker than I expected, which I am really happy about. Because I get disappointed with a lot of dark romances, where I am expecting dark and twisted characters but end up with normal characters that just don't do it for me. This can be because I read a lot of really dark books so my hard limits and needs are up higher than the regular reader. Dark means different things to different readers.
"I am snow white, and he is the poisoned apple, and despite this knowledge, right here, right now, I would die for just one bite of flesh."
Let's talk about our main character Faye. Who is being married off to a twisted killer by her evil father. And let me tell you her dad is one sick bastard! She is being married off to Cole who is definitely NOT a good guy. There were scenes in this book that had me cringing because they were so ruthless and horrific. The author definitely has a dark side to her. Cole wants to break, hurt and feast on her flesh. I love that we have dual POV, because I love getting into the heads of these dark characters.
"I'm not a hearts and flowers man. If I ever offer her a heart, it will be warm and still beating..."
There are a couple of flashbacks that were heartbreaking and explains why Cole is the way he is. It also shows what Faye has gone through in her past, which was pretty sick too. My heart broke for both characters in these moments. What I love most about Faye is that even though she had no real freedom and has been through some really traumatic events, she is still very strong. She didn't let what happened to her break her. Even though Cole is a dark character, there is a light inside all his darkness. I can't blame him for ending up the way he did. Cole and Faye are a perfect match. His darkness doesn't push her away, she embraces it! In a lot of dark romance I get annoyed by the female character because they play hard to get and it unnecessary lengthens the book. I like straight forward characters and in this book all of them are that.
"I want to obey this man. I need to please him and not only because I fear his wrath but because he has somehow bound me to him. In some sick and twisted way, I crave his approval."
There were so many great quotes I highlighted, too bad I can't include all of them in here. But hopefully they give you some view into what kind of story this is. It was very dark. The only down side I can find to this story is the length. For me it could've been much longer. I was missing seeing the characters more as a couple. I wanted more development in their relationship. I think that is the reason why I couldn't 100% connect with them. I also wanted more intimate scenes, normally there are too many of them in dark romances but in this book I wanted more of them. The plot was great and very original. I REALLY really loved. I wish there were more books like Feyness. My dark and twisted mind needs to be fed by these type of stories.
"Hope is a sick thing. It is even more vile than admitting that the monster in front of me turns me on."
This book is a stand-alone but I am hoping the author will be persuaded to either write a sequel for Faye and Cole or give two side characters their own story. I especially want Cole's brother Luke to get his own book because he was even darker than Cole. But Grim was the worst. That guy is messed up on a whole another level!
"I want him to use me as he sees fit, even if it hurts; even if it hurts so badly that I never crave his touch again."
This book is a page-turner. It is a 190-page book in which everything happens in a fast pace and you don’t have any time to get bored.
If you are a fan of dark reads, you may enjoy this book.
***********************************************
I am not a reader of dark books. However, I wanted to try this one because it had a paranormal aspect, which sounded interesting.
The verdict is “Nope, I can’t be a reader of dark books no matter what!”
Although this book was apparently a well-written one, I didn’t enjoy myself reading it. The vivid descriptions of the gore in it, the degradation of women and the child molestation still haunt me. I didn't know it was that disturbing before starting to read it.
Nope, I am not a good reader for these books. At least, I have tried and tested myself once more.
***********************************************
Now, if I were to rate this book, I would categorize it something between 3,5-4 stars for lovers of dark books but for me it was below zero, unfortunately, because I didn’t enjoy it.
Therefore, I will not rate this book. However, for readers who consider reading this book, I will try to give a detailed review on it.
***********************************************
So many genres apply to this book!
It is actually a combination of dark, paranormal, mystery and thriller.
Above all, it was focused on rightful vengeance.
***********************************************
Erotica??? No, not at all!
Dark??? Yes!
The book is “definitely not erotica” if you ask me. There is only one or two short scenes of the hero/heroine getting intimate with each other.
Anything else about sex in it is rape, child molestation, using girls as sex slaves, aka any kind of sick treatment of women and children.
Using collars for sex slaves or using naked women as coffee tables on all fours might give you an idea how far women degradation goes in the book.
Even the father of the heroine, the biggest villain of the book, descriptively tells his daughter how to please her husband: nauseating!
Girls and women are all objects to be used in this world. They have no humanly value.
The relationship between the hero and the heroine
The interaction between the hero Cole and the heroine Faye begins with manhandling, backhanding, threatening to painfully sodomize her while she lusts for this man in a sick way -just unbelievable!
Then, very quickly, Cole sees that Faye is not the “whore” he expected her to be and they become this inseparable couple all of a sudden.
I was neither able to feel their insta-lust nor relate to either of these characters.
There is no romance between them.
No hearts or flowers, no declaration of love.
He just claims and protects her when he believes she is not like her evil father but also another victim of his.
***********************************************
The “dark” side of the book can also be attributed to the many descriptive violence scenes. Killing a person after torturing him/her is described with all its gore details.
The fact that Cole (the hero), Luke (his brother) and Grim (best friend & bro) kill the bad men to save the lives of abused and tortured women and children doesn’t change the fact that they take immense pleasure in torturing people and killing them with innovative ways.
These three characters have endured a lot in their childhood and their perverted parents’ actions have unfortunately tainted their innocent souls and now they are the ruthless and psychotic killers who enjoy taking lives.
Paranormal aspect
The “paranormal” aspect of the book is very interesting. The heroine in the book, Faye, has a unique ability of seeing the aura of people. She sees red, black, orange, violet, green or blue lights around people and in time she has learnt how to interpret the colors. A man with a red aura means he is full of anger or lust, a person emanating an orange light means he is full of betrayal…etc.
Does this ability of hers fit anywhere in the story – is it of any use?
Well, this supernatural ability of the heroine seemed to me just like an interesting touch to the story, but definitely not beneficial for her safety or survival in the things she has experienced.
Faye is the only supernatural being in this book. Despite being interesting, a woman with a supernatural ability in a real world with real people doesn’t sound convincing. In a fantasy world, it would be awesome but in this real world of mafia, sex slavery and all, the heroine’s supernatural ability that she has gained after an accident threatens to shake the realism of the actual story in it.
***********************************************
All in all, I want to repeat that it was a page turner and it may appeal to the fans of dark reads – it was just a wrong read for me.
Faye always knew that she was worth no more than a pawn in her father's dangerous game of human trafficking, torture and enslavement. A decades-long feud lands her in the hands of the man who should be her enemy. Could her new captor also be her savior?
Tonight, I will no longer be me. I will be owned. I will lose the moniker of Faye Craven and become a Hunter. A more fitting name would be prey.
I wasn't sure what to think of Cole. Aside from participating in tons of brutality, there was a kernel of a heart buried deep inside of him. His darkness and hints of light made him a delicious character to read.
This man slays me with desire. Sick, twisted, dirty desire.
I don't really care about the side characters (I'm looking at you, Luke and Grim), however, I think the author could change my mind. It's just that I don't feel like Cole's story is over. The ending wasn't much of an end and I would like to see some sort of conclusive resolution.
Ah well. Cole conquered Faye, she conquered him in return, and the story seems to continue. I'm still not sure what to make of Faye's ESP. I guess it was added to make Cole's history and his reasons for being the way he is part of the story. To make sense. Hopefully it continues to make some sort of sense. We'll see.
"Love kills. It's not hearts and flowers. It's death and blood."
This quote right here sums up what you'll get from Feyness . If you're looking for a fluffy and sweet love, than this isn't the story for you. But, if you're trying to find one that focuses on the brutality of love, then go right ahead. Pick it up. I dare you. :)
As a lover of dark romance, I was very skeptical at first, wondering if ES Carter will be able to do the genre justice or not. Well she did it justice, but man oh man, she surpassed all of my expectations!!!
Feyness was . . .
 photo Amazing-GIF 1.gif
Told in dual POV, Feyness gives us the story of Faye and Cole, a couple of 'star-crossed lovers' *yes, I said that*, who have to battle against not only their beliefs but also the people around them to get their 'relationship' to the point of no return and even then, nothing is for certain. I won't say much about the plot as I want that to be a surprise. But I'll say this. What I loved most about this story were the 2 leads.
"Do not show weakness. Do not let them win. Be the breeze. Float away."
Faye is the epitome of a survivalist. All her life all she did was survive, and just when she thought this is how is going to end, in came Cole, the tormented monster our mothers' warned us about, and swept her off her feet.
"Your Daddy may reign his kingdom with a crown of blood, but I do not fear it. Blood soothes me, blood is the drug I crave."
This story is brutal, it's not for the faint of heart. All throughout the book we have gruesome and bloody scenes that will either make you dry-heave or praise the author's ability to imagine such atrocities. I'm used to a lot of twisted scenes in my dark books, but these were of the charts crazy, and *don't tell anyone* I couldn't get enough; I was internally pleading to get more, more blood, more gore, more darkness. The thing is, they worked amazingly for this book. The world in which Faye lives isn't a 'light' one, and the author explored all the debauchery of the human nature, but in such a way that it was believable. Nothing she described was for shock value, every single thing had a role to play in the uncovering of the plot.
"I want to feast on her flesh and wear her innocent soul like a second skin. I just don't want anyone else to have a taste."
And now onto the good part - the writing - I'll call it wordy, but I wouldn't have it any other way. To put it simply, it is spectacular. The way ES Carter uses these words to create beautiful and mesmerizing scenes is magical; all her descriptions are so rich in details, that it gives you the feeling that you are right there in the midst of all the action. And this is the reason why, more times than I anticipated, I was forced to put the book down, take a breather and then go back in, secretly praying for more.
All in all, if you like dark books with all the fixings, please, I beg you, give Feyness a try, it won't disappoint you.
P.S. The two secondary characters will rock your socks!!! Luke and Grim, the classy assassin vs the backwoods killer - you know what I'll say next . . .they NEED books!!!!!!
I’ve had my eye on this book for awhile. I had no idea it was a dark book. I liked the cover, saw the glowing reviews and decided to tackle my TBR shelf.
Feyness is a standalone and each book will center one of the brothers.
I’m a pretty picky girl when it comes to dark books. It’s also hard for me to find one where I truly feel the “darkness”.
I thought Feyness was an okay book, it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t grand. I read it in one sitting and that goes to show how interested I was.
Faye is forced to marry Cole, who is not a good man. He’s a powerful man in the mafia.
Okay, so I love the premise of the book. I’m a sucker for forced marriages and of course she’s a virgin! There was also some damsel in distress moments that I liked too.
But there was always something off with the story and I couldn’t put my finger on it. For one, the book is OVERLY descriptive, to the point where it was distracting. Less is more. Instead of just saying the characters walk into the room, it would be like this three-page ordeal of how the characters feel, and what the room looks like and some more on how the characters feel.
Edit the inner monologues out please.
I didn’t like the dialogue, it sounded too forced. No one talks like that. I rolled my eyes so many times during the book. I get that Cole is evil, but if I took a shot for every time I read the word blood or how much Cole loves blood I would be passed out dead.
I also liked reading how a man can be dark instead of a man telling me how dark he is. There’s a difference to that.
I liked the tension between Cole and Faye, but oh boy was this a slow burn book! I liked Faye being weak and submissive. As much as I love a strong Heroine, I do like a weak one. It’s really cheesy, but I gobble that stuff up.
So on the one hand I enjoy the premise, the cheese factor and some oh wow dark moments. It was interesting and kept me reading. On the other hand, a lot of the dialogue felt forced, the overly descriptive writing was distracting. So like I said. I liked it … sort of.
I will go on to the next book, which I think is about Grim. I’m a bit nervous as he is the most messed up brother but I’m too curious to not read it.
E.S. Carter completely obliterated all my expectations with Feyness! To say she penned a masterpiece of emotions is an understatement, and completely lacks the strength of accolades Carter deserves for writing this phenomenal story and characters.
I went into Feyness blind. Not knowing what to expect, or what the storyline was about. All I had was Carter's warning at the beginning of the book: "Readers of a sensitive disposition may want to step away from the book. Step away, nothing to see here." Of course, this had me even further intrigued because I love a good dark twisted read. However, I'm telling you now, although you will be totally shocked, do not be scared. This story is so worth the journey of gut wrenching heartache and emotions.
You see Feyness is definitely twisted and heartbreaking in places; but sadly that's the reality of this world. And in the end, all we can hope is that goodness will rise above and triumph.
It may not be hearts & flowers, but to me it was even more powerful than hearts and flowers could ever be. It was raw, gritty, and in your face real. It made you think. It opened up all your emotions. And most of all it made you feel!!! I didn't want to put it down. I didn't want to turn away. All I wanted to do was devour this story and characters and see where Carter would lead her readers on this twisted and thought provoking journey.
I am so grateful I took the leap, and never looked back. Be prepared to be shocked, to cry, and to will these characters to fight through the heartache. You will see that monsters are not always born but created. And all we can do is have faith that some justice will prevail!
"An evil encased in a beauty so intense it steals your breath."
I have read all of ES Carter's other books and loved each one. This story is so dark and so very different from her other books with a hero so evil, how could I possibly fall in love with this tale and its characters!?
"I am darkness.
The blackest of black.
She is light.
Would she taint me with her goodness?
Would I find redemption in the softness of her skin and the warmness of her flesh?"
The book starts out when Faye is given to Cole by her monster of a father. Faye can see that Cole's aura is evil and black and she can't help but be afraid even as she is attracted to him and to his outer beauty.
"I am his to have. His to use. His to inflict pleasure… or pain."
The author's amazing writing painted pictures of each scene in my mind with her words. I was immersed in the story, dragged along with Faye...I felt everything with her and for her!!
"...all I am is need disguised as a vessel made of blood, bone, and sinew. This man slays me with desire. Sick, twisted, dirty desire."
At times I felt overwhelmed with the brutality of the story, especially in flashbacks, but it really served to connect me to Cole, Faye, even Luke (and dare I say Grim).
I know this story is a standalone but in the end I couldn't help but want more. I want to go back to this world with Cole and Faye. I want to see what they can accomplish together. I want to discover more about Luke and even Grim.
If you are in search of dark, gritty, and disturbing, look no further.
If you are looking for another Love by Numbers book, RUN!!!
This is extremely -like black vs white, right vs left- different story for author ES Carter. The question is: Did I like it?
Yes.
Can I speak about the book without feeling like I’d give spoilers? No. This is hard part - I feel like anything I give to support my review would be a spoiler for the readers journey. What I can say is that ES Carter provides a story where the reader you take a journey - not in the movements or actions of the characters - but what these characters think and feel. You learn about past and present. The whys and wherefores of the actions that drive them slowly unfold as you get deeper into their character.
This story is: Very Dark, Extremely Disturbing - not some but most of the time, Cringe Worthy, and yet… Heartbreaking, Revenge Seeking and Hopeful. Yes Hopeful.
If you are looking for something dark yet different, look no further. If you are looking for another contemporary romance with HEA, go look somewhere else. 5 out of 5 breath taking (literally) stars
ES Carter delivers a chillingly dark standalone that completely blew me away. The book takes place in the underbelly of London, and concentrates on the two families who run the country, (namely the Cravens and the Hunters). Two families with a tumultuous past, centring around power, hatred and revenge. The Hunter brothers seek revenge for their mother's demise, Alec Craven needs his daughter married to bring the two families together. Both families hide a very dark secret and both families are willing to die to protect their secrets. I've got to say, yes, this book has a very macabre feel to it, yet I still fell in love with and related to the Hunters. I loved the chemistry between Faye and Cole, and I loved the honesty that the characters brought to their 'relationship'. A marriage of convenience/revenge that turns out to be so much more. This is a book that some may not be able to understand/accept due to it's extremely dark, violent nature, I however, loved this complete about turn from ES Carter and I truly hope she explores her dark side further with spin off books from this troubled family. A full fives stars, I had trouble putting this book down.
Blurb:
I don't see dead people.
I see you.
I see every incarnation of you.
I see the history of your soul.
I can see your aura soaked in the blood of your previous lives.
Most people are inherently good or evil.
Some flit between darkness and light.
Few can change the fabric of their essence; it's a fight that most are too weak to win.
He was once darkness.
An evil so pure that his very soul is black and yet I am drawn to him like a moth to a flame.
Some days, I feel like I am drowning, the waves of my feelings stealing the very air from my lungs.
Other days, I feel nothing at all.
I'm unsure which is worse; gasping for air or dying from this thirst.
Can you learn to breathe underwater when you find someone worth drowning for?
Feyness is a dark standalone.
Readers of a sensitive disposition may want to step away from the book. Step away, nothing to see here.
Readers who like to dance on the dark side, come on in and enjoy the ride.
Going into this book the plot was almost a complete mystery to me. I knew that some people had said it was dark and bloody but aside from that I wasn't sure what to expect. This not knowing made the first quarter of the book amazing. I loved that there was something new around every corner.
Everything that happened was unexpected and everyone I met was a puzzle. For me, that excitement of all the newness didn't last past about 30%. Once I met the characters and learned a bit about them it was easy to see what would transpire.
The characters were straight shooters; what you see is what you get. The characters weren't boring or trite, they were just honest. Cole said he was going to do something so he did it. Faye felt a certain way and that's how she felt. It didn't really leave any room for mystery the rest of the book. Everything sort of went according to plan after that first 30%.
If you're looking for something with a sort of mafia-darkness going on, a hot evil hero (with an even meaner brother and crazier partner) and an aura-seeing heroine biding her time, check this one out!
First time read from author E.S. Carter. This book was not for me at all. I have no clue on why or how I finished it.
I believe this story was about mafia family's. Faye (heroine) is from one family and is being married off to the leader Cole (hero) from the Hunter family. Faye has a unique ability where she is able to see your aura. Though it really wasn't explained how in the world she was able to get this gift. Or how it really fit in the overall story. It was hers alone, thought maybe she would use that to uncover peoples true intentions or something but nothing. There were many NOPES in the story that had I known were in it I would not have read it.
Big one was child molestation. I mean I think this group of unstable men recruited every sick fuck they could get their dirty disgusting hands on. "Hey you like kids?? You're in!" It was gross. The only scenes we get are bits and pieces from the heroines flash backs. And constant talk about it. What others did to this kid or blah blah blah.
Women degradation. How they were pictured in this story made me mad. They were killed, slapped, treated like whores, pets, slaves etc. Every rebellious part of me was screaming WTF.
Lots of descriptive violence/gore. <-- this is fine for me but its really just how an author decides to go about telling it. Some of the shit was F'ing gross. I really didn't need to get that much info out of certain scenes.
Luke and Grim are F'ed up! What ASSES. Grim is the worst. Just had to get that out. If so happens there is a book continuation of this and it being about Luke or Grim, I would NEVER read it. If it wasn't I still would not read it. This is only MY opinion. Some may read it differently then me or look past things I could not.
Non è roba per me...questo libro ne è la conferma...sono stufa di donne prigioniere e sottomesse...sadismo e violenza.
Scritto bene sicuramente ma è ufficialmente l'ultimo libro che leggo del genere,non lo comprendo e trovo senza senso questa continua "compravendita"di donne da parte degli uomini...trattate come merce e giocattoli senza valore..la cosa triste è che sono le donne che scrivono sta roba...Ma!il dark a mio parere è altro...quanto meno un dark con più buon gusto e senso...
5 freaking hot stars!
ARC provided by the author in exchange for an honest review
I'd like to first begin by saying that do heed the author's warning people. This book is not for everyone. If you're looking for hearts and flowers, this is certainly not it. This book is for those who enjoy the darkness- grittiness and depravity- this will be a treat for you guys!
My thoughts when I finished were: OMFG! Like, is this for real? I cannot say how much I liked this book! This was a dark book but it was DIFFERENT! I really liked how Faye's abilities gave us insights about the other characters, it was like nothing was hidden. Cole was amazing! He was portrayed as a true monster at the beginning but when we begin to really understand him and his actions, he was kinda redeemed. And, let's not talk about Cole and Faye's chemistry- smoking hot for sure!
The dark romance genre is one of my favorites and I absolutely loved this story. It had the perfect mix of violence, drama and gritty aspects. And the ending! God, that absolutely gutted me! It was not a cliffy but it was certainly more brutal than one! I want more of this darkness lol This was my first book by E.S. Carter but this is definitely not the last! I cannot wait to read what she will write next!
Gli umani credono in maniera innata che qualsiasi cosa gratifichi lo sguardo debba per forza essere buona, ma chiunque con un po’ di buon senso sa che è una bugia, una trappola.
Cole è misterioso e affascinante, il suo sguardo è letale, incute timore ma è anche malizioso e accattivante. Cole è potenza, oscurità, odio e lussuria. Dà la caccia a stupratori e pedofili ma è pur sempre un assassino. Gli viene promessa in sposa Fay, figlia di un uomo potente e malvagio, della peggior specie.
L'incidente nel quale ha perso la vita sua madre con lei presente in auto, le ha lasciato un dono speciale: lei vede l'aura delle persone, la loro anima e il loro peccato, il Feyness, ossia il passato.
Fay è affascinata dalle contraddizioni del neo marito, un male racchiuso in una bellezza così intensa da togliere il fiato.
Nelle tenebre, c’è protezione, nell’assenza di luce, c’è forza e nella sottomissione, c’è potere. Cole le fa tutti questi doni e anche di più.
Il  fratello di Cole, Luke, dissimula la sua bestia molto meglio di quanto riesca a fare lui, ma  questo non significa che sia meno letale.
È un libro oscuro e sanguinario, un vero Dark che ho apprezzato tanto perché ne sono rimasta ammaliata.
This book by E.S. Carter is darkly disturbing, had me question my own morals and even left me queasy a time or two. Throughout it all though it left me wanting more of Faye and Cole and their slow burn romance with off the charts chemistry. This isn't for the faint of heart but if you like stories that will definitely take you out of your comfort zone, then I highly recommend Feyness.
It has a good ending but I really hope the author explores more in this world, especially to see Grim and learn about his past. 4 Stars!
Loved everything about this dark, twisted love story! ES Carter manages to make you fall in love with characters that could be considered monsters (including the secondary characters of Luke and Grim that I think need their own stories told now)
Wow!!! How can one of the sweetest, nicest ladies write such a wonderfully dark book? I read this so quickly, I just couldn't put it down. It's gripping, all consuming and very well written. I highly recommend, but be warned, you will feel the book hangover hard!!
This was super dark and the paranormal aspect were really light. My favorite character was one of the darker ones, Grim. His wild psychoticness just felt real, and someone who just really made a great foil for the H. The h wasn't the usual victim in the situation, causing me to stay interested. Honestly, once I started I didn't want to stop. Loved it. Only issue I had was the PNR aspect. Other than random observations, I didn't see it used. It was never acted upon, just randomly observed.
When Darkness collides with Light 10 million stars
BAM! She does it again. ES Carter seems to just get better and better with each of her stories. She has this insane creative mind that crafts such fantastically epic characters and their minds and their souls. She keeps weaving her spell, yet again steals my soul with Feyness. I knew it was not going to be a normal story, I knew it was going to be dark. I had no idea by the time The End rolled up, I would have left a piece of myself back inside the bookepicness that is Feyness.
The story is told in alternative POV where we get to dive into the inner thoughts and feelings of the main protagonist, the light princess as I dubbed her, Faye and her dark counterpart to end all counterparts, Cole.
Holy Batman in heaven! I swear to you, THIS BOOK WAS WAY, WAY ABOVE MY EXPECTATION OF WHAT DARK BOOKS ARE ABOUT. If you want fluff and sweet love then keep walking but if you want something to wrap its sweet and dark claws around your heart and squeeze it hard, then Feyness is THE BOOK for you.
The story is about revenge, it all started way back when evil ruled over innocent and more innocent lives were lost and in the process darker beings come to be. Faye is nothing but a pawn being forced to do the bidding of yet another evil. I could NOT wrap my mind or my heart around her past, her life and her loneliness. She survives such brutality that I had to stop at moments just to collect myself. What I absolutely loved about the story other than the characters and the plot was the ability that Faye had, the ability that made her a little less vulnerable, the ability that will in the end, maybe save her life. Or not….
Then there is Cole, the utterly delicious yet tortured tyrant who you should run from yet you are unable to move because he’s magnetic and his soullessness will suck you inside his vortex of terror. He was the epitome of cold and harsh yet there were glimpses of something else. I cringed everything he interacted with Faye, I wanted to grab her and yank her out of the book, away from this man, this thing. Because what life has made him is not something that is ever going to be called good. He is after all a man that kills without a qualm. He feeds on the terror of his victims, he the man that our mothers told us to run from, the one that will ensnare her and keep us imprisoned for life.
Feyness is vicious and it’s not for everyone. There are scenes that will leave you cringe or want to throw up because it’s so heinous and bloody. I was left gasping because this was all coming from the minds of my, as I dubbed her, soul stealer - ES Carter. It was dark and twisty with several turns into blind alleys and then stabbing, bloody messes at your feet and fears, such fear that you will feel goosebumps on your skin. I loved how the author navigated through the depravity and corruption around Faye. ES Carter did not want to shock us with the story, she painted a picture so brutal and hurtful yet so freaking honest it left me speechless.
My one regret is that I can’t undo time and go back and read it again and feel EVERYTHING that she made me feel when I read it for the first time. To say I am enthralled by her magical words would be an understatement. I was left wanting more when it ended, I was left feeling lost without her magic. I cannot wait for the next edition to this book where we will delve into the lives of people who has lost it all.
The monster is waiting to strike. He will not be tamed. He will not fall for the innocent. He will destroy it. For in that he will find his peace.
Horrifyingly Beautiful!!
I am a huge fan of ES Carter's books. Her Love by Numbers series is one of my favorite book series of all time. So when Eli announced she was writing a dark romance, I didn't know what to expect. Could someone who writes such heartwarming, poetic and love soaked words really be gritty and raw and brutal? Well after reading Feyness I can answer that question with a resounding YES!!
"Love kills. It's not hearts and flowers. It's death and blood."
That is what Feyness encompasses. It's not sunsets and walks on the beach. The story is gruesome. It is gut wrenching. And it kept me glued to the pages in all its horrific glory.
Faye is a unique character. She's been through a lot in her young life and always did what she needed to survive. Now she's being given to a man that could prove to be a monster worse than anything she's been up against before. Her strength and resolve will be tested, and so will her heart.
"I want to obey this man. I need to please him and not only because I fear his wrath but because he has somehow bound me to him."
Cole Hunter is terrifying. He is the face of an angel, with the body of a God and the blackest soul of the devil. He is disturbingly violent and yet there was something about him, beneath the surface... I just couldn't quite put my finger on it, but I was drawn to him from the beginning.
"I am darkness. The blackest of black. She is light. Would she taint me with her goodness?"
Faye and Cole had a chemistry that neither were expecting. Their effects on each other created a lot of inner conflict for both of them. Forced together in the unholiest of unions each one needs to fight for survival, and they need to decide if they're against each other or fighting together against a common enemy.
"Humans innately believe that anything which pleases the eye must be good. Our instincts tell us that evil does not lurk beneath an alluring mask, it’s impossible."
This quote from Feyness was not only fitting in the story but also for the author. I'm not saying ES Carter is evil, haha, but she has a dark side that created a story far beyond anything I could have imagined coming from her. What I read was nothing short of sheer, twisted brilliance. Eli painted such explicit pictures through detailed descriptions and poetic analogies that I was completely consumed by what I was reading. The character development was also so advanced that every emotion and thought they each had provoked the same from me. I hurt and ached, I cried, I was frightened and I loved. I was on the emotional rollercoaster of a lifetime and when it was all over, I wanted to get back on and experience it all again. I craved it. Feyness ruined me, in the best possible way.
