Dead Mage Walking

Rate this book
For James Irving, mage life isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. After losing his first love in an ambush attack, he’s content to hibernate in his gothic home with his ghostly roommate—actually, Agatha is more like a mother than a swirl of glowing green mist from Colonial times—while the world (and his estranged older brother, the only family he has left) goes on without him.

But when dinosaur skeletons break down his door and lead him to a fellow mage in distress, James is pulled into an evil plot that threatens not only his cozy hometown but all of humanity. With cursed books popping up left and right, putting people in comas and worse, James forms an uneasy alliance with a pair of young mages bent on exposing the dark magic behind the chaos.

Can the team of upstarts foil a deranged mage exceedingly more powerful than they are? And will James get through one measly date with the beautiful doctor he’s trying to woo (dipping a toe back in the world has unexpectedly revived his love life) without being interrupted by a supernatural emergency?

Creative horror/fantasy blend with great atmosphere

I wasn’t real sure what to expect with this story but it was definitely an entertaining read. It took me a bit to feel situated in the plot and know the characters but they do grow on you and you get a feel for the world.

The atmosphere is probably my favorite piece of this book. It gives a very old-decrepit-haunted-mansion vibe and it works well for setting the scene.

The characters were okay for the most part. I enjoyed the main cast but Agatha, a spirit from Revolutionary times stole every scene she was in. I deeply enjoyed her pieces!

The plot gets a bit convoluted. It’s not impossible to follow but I found myself rereading scenes a few times to completely grasp what was happening. The action scenes were done brilliantly and really painted vivid pictures.

Definitely a good read if you want a horror/fantasy hybrid with a great world and enjoyable enough characters. Give it a try.

I got this from you at a convention here in Maine, aniMaine I think it was, and I wished I got an autograph because it was soo good, very nice, chef's kiss of a book. It was a little confusing at times, but it had a pleasant surprise.
overall the book was nice, and I'm happy to have gotten it, very important book to me and it will forever be on my shelf, I loved it soo dang much and it also had to be one of my favorite reads of 2022.

I'll make sure to read more of your books.
I can't stress how much I loved it enough because it was destined to be made, nothing better than some fantasy to make the mind happy.

To anyone who reads this review, I recommend this book it's a great read and not too hefty of a book so it is good for long rides.
