Nothing screams chaos, mayhem, and desperation quite like working retail over the holidays, but with bills to pay, hungry mouths to feed, and the clock ticking on an eviction notice and her sanity, Ginger Harriet is near the end of her rope. To make matters worse, she had no intentions of becoming a single mother of three, but after the disappearance of her sister and brother-in-law, she’s determined to do her best.
For a Harriet woman, family always comes first.
To give her nieces and nephew the Christmas they deserve, Ginger will do anything—even tango with the devil himself, her sister’s business partner and best friend, Kace Dannicks.
Unless she convinces Kace she’s really not the woman he wants in his life and she only wants his help to find her sister, Ginger’s going to need a miracle to escape the holidays unscathed—and still single.
2.5 stars. Until about the half way point I was adoring this book, then the zany ramped up and my glow began to fade... and fade. From the moment the clothes designer enters the plot this tale kind of implodes. We went from fun - love Ginger with her stubborn, capable attitude and bone deep work ethic - to cray-cray over the top madness that was neither funny nor very believable.
The plot begins well, stuck with her sister's kids - who has gone missing - Ginger is forced to take on two part time xmas jobs along with her day job just to pay the bills. She doesn't shirk, she doesn't complain. She gets on with it. She deals with crisis after crisis like a superwoman. And with that attitude the Hero falls in love with her - who can blame him? Except there isn't that much connection b/w the two and over time you begin to suspect that he just wants an incredibly capable woman so she can make his home/work life easier.
There were quite a few things I, as a reader, just had to go with, the march of the slutty elves, some random Santa dude shelling out a couple of thousand to gift her the birds, dog and a years supply of pet food - And I went with the flow. I even liked how she finally put her foot down at work. though with her attitude you wonder how she let it get so bad or go on so long.
Then there was all the revenge plotting against her sister - cool. And the repetitive if he takes his shirt off I'm a gonna have my wicked way with him- getting a little frayed at the edges. Then the crack pot designer, the car buying, the modelling contract, the clothes, more plotting against the sister. More car buying.
And finally a wild mish mash of an ending - which by that time I was kind of over and beginning to skim. Huge amount of potential that was just wasted on over the top zany secondary characters and a story trying to do way too much. Also I think this author should re-read her work- an annoying amount of repetitive sentences occur. It jars the reader out of the story. As I kept thinking didn't they just say that already? Didn't I just read that sentence?
An overachiever with a horrendous day job takes on two more part-time jobs. At Christmas. In a mall. No she's not crazy, just desperate. Her nieces and nephew have landed on her doorstep because their [extremely wealthy] parents have disappeared and their weekly dry cleaning bill alone is another $100 she can't afford... It's another delightful romantic comedy from the same loosely holiday romances by Bernadette Franklin. It can be read as a stand alone but as there is some character overlap [and because they are all delightfully funny] I recommend them all! Claustrophobic Shammed Bat Out of Hell Ginger Snapped
Ginger finds herself with her sister’s three children the month before Christmas. She takes on two part time jobs to support them while worrying about where her sister and husband have gone off to. Enter Kace, her sister’s business partner who helps her out. Over the top zaniness ensues. A very enjoyable read.
A lot of things are going on in this book. The tone of the book change dramatically when we went from thinking the parents died, to find out they just took an unplanned vacation.
It was fun however, to watch all the mayhem. If you can't handle a little chaos before your HEA, this might not be the book for you.
Ginger Snapped is fantastic! Ginger is a strong bada** woman! She works a full time and two part time jobs to take care of her nieces and nephew. Her sister’s business partner steps in to help, and things heat up between them. Also, she gets the best gifts from Santa, and the twins get revenge on their parents with a different type of gift…
Boy, do I sympathize with Ginger. Being also an aunt of teenagers, I can only say that I am glad that my sister is not as impulsive as hers. However, I will say that Ginger's prizes for her care and hard work made the Christmas ordeal worthwhile (especially the puppy)! What a way to punish Michelle!
This book was fast-paced, wacky, weird, non-formulaic, silly and funny. I needed something entertaining and fun to listen to while doing some mindless work and driving and this was perfect. A fun holiday read and it was a free borrow from my online library so that's always a win!
I love how this fun filled book takes me away while still gently but realistically dealing with mental health issues and inadequate payment for work. I love Juliette!
I always loved this book. I think this is my third read-through. It’s always good to have a go-to book to read when you just want to be happy. This book is that for me.
Goodreads ratings are not always a good indication.. Starts off with a few good enough jokes and then just spirals off into ridiculous over-the-top clichés.
As always, I absolutely adore the characters that Franklin creates. The fact that she used a fun play on words in the title, and naming of Ginger was even better. I think one of my very favourite scenes is the moment when Ginger looks her sister dead in the eye and says “Ginger Snapped”. I laughed way more than that one liner probably warranted if I’m being honest. Kace is also a really fun character who balances Ginger out beautifully – both characters that I really enjoyed getting to know.
Ginger’s sister, whilst a good way to drive the plot is an absolutely selfish moron. It is quite frankly ridiculous. But, I do love that her children are well aware of how ridiculous their parents’ actions are. And the way in which the twin girls show their displeasure is kind of, absolutely and ridiculously hilarious. Honestly, even writing this, I’m giggling out loud at how they make their father faint with their antics. Honestly, I think that they deserved more, but it was still a fun bit of comeuppance to the actual neglect that their parents put them through. And the challenges that Ginger is forced to face when they decide to just follow their whimsy.
Christmas time is stressful for everyone – probably too much commercialisation. And that’s not taking into account the fact that Ginger then has three more mouths to feed. It was a nice reminder at that time of year that sometimes Christmas isn’t about the presents and the decorations and all of the expensiveness. Rather, it’s about family and coming together. Showing your love in whatever way you can and making sure that your whole family is safe and sound.
Although I loved this story, I was kind of disappointed that Ginger’s revenge didn’t actually happen. I mean, she puts all of this thought and effort into her master plan. She figures out something that will seriously mess with her sister for an extended period of time, but then she blows a gasket and just… tells her everything. All of that joy of planning and scheming, just gone down the drain. But, then, Juliette Carter was back into the story line, so that kind of made up for my disappointment.
I still adore these series. The main character gets to escape from a shitty life situation and get all the good things (a much better job when she can shine and be appreciated, friends, love, puppy, etc., ...everything we want for Christmas), there's humour, there are fun dialogues.
Unfortunately there is also a couple of things that tend to start to drag these stories down: when Juliette appears the story tends to turn into a repetition of every other book in the series, because the new main characters needs to get the same introduction into the 'world of Juliette Carter' as every main character in the series before her (also, the clothing part if my least favourite part of the book); the dialogues get repetitive...characters tend to have a strong need to explain the same thing over and over, and same lines appear repeatedly in different dialogues; the story jumps in a way that looks like the author/characters just can't decide what to do, they talk about doing things one way, then suddenly 'oh, wait, I'll do this instead' and the story flow jumps from one corner to another. There's a lot of craziness, anxiety, and instability floating around.
I think this is the best Bernadette Franklin book yet. It's a romantic comedy (think the fun of Audrey Hepburn or Cary Grant) but no weak female needing a man to take care of her. I think Ginger may be the strongest female of the BF books. They are all strong women who happen to find men who appreciate their strengths and see the woman's strengths as assets to them. These men don't want a simpering piece of arm candy. They want a partner to go through life with. That sounds heavy but honestly it is a fun read with really believable characters. Be warned: this is not a version of the kama sutra. There is a GOOD story written. It doesn't need to hide behind gratuitous sex.
Just get the darn book and enjoy! You'll be glad you did and be ready to spend the money buying all of RJ Blain's (Bernadette is one of her alter egos) other books. You will get hooked.
As much as I like these books, they are pretty much syrup on pancakes. A little is good, a lot in one go not so good. I wish I’d left it longer to read this one, maybe I would’ve enjoyed it more.
I had a bad feeling with the last book and this one just confirmed it. They’re practically all the same. It’s a fairytale for the MC that consists of a guy to skip the dating and head straight for marriage negotiation , a new car, new wardrobe and a reason to spend stupid amounts of money after struggling to make ends meet. Not forgetting the prank/revenge. Once again the story got hijacked by Juliette, who I’m pretty sure should have her own story.
I really liked Shammed but the other three fell short for me and I need to have a think about whether I want to buy yet another similar story, or at least give it time to feel new. The only thoughts this one left me with was thank god I don’t eat chicken nuggets.
Such a cute, sweet, funny comedy just in time for Christmas. Ginger is working hard to keep all of her balls in the air and the process of how she does so is endearing and hilarious. Add Kace to the mix. He is handsome, successfull and obnoxious! Watching the connection between these two develop was so much fun.
This is another must read by Bernadette Franklin. Don't hesitate to jump in to see just how Ginger snaps!
And another one for the history books! Although not quite as laugh out loud as Bat Out of Hell, Ginger Snapped has some pretty amazing puns to go along with the many giggles it induced. Also, more Juliette! As she is an important side character here there were some delightful and hilarious kidnapping schemes involved. I can't wait for The Run Around to come put.
Another great book from the brain and pen of Bernadette Franklin (aka the awesome R.J. Blain). A clean HEA with great characters and an appearance by the fabulous Juliette Carter, teamed with a nicely paced plot, snark and shenanigans make for a great read.
Once again Bernadette Franklin delivers!! Such a good story with an adorable puppy and lots of giggles to be had! It is so refreshing to be able to read the complete story without having to skim over the sex scenes, you actually get to read a great book. Thank you for the entrainment, the chapter with the turkey was a riot!!
I tell you what. I love Bernadette Franklin's books. This was another awesome read. The main character is trying to work and take care of her sisters kids after she ran off without them. She's going to give them hell when she finds them. Until then they are going to have the best Christmas ever. She'll just have talk a handsome devil into helping her. Great book!
Well written, hilarious, and endlessly entertaining! RJ Blain writing as Bernadette Franklin is pure, unadulterated joy! This book will have you staying up til the wee hours of the morning, and you won’t regret it!
This was full of different but wonderfully fun characters. Aside from a few embarrassing moments from the children's choice of revenge, this was a great, fast-paced read. I am looking forward to the next one.
Funny, bitingly witty, romance, comeuppance delivered. Snarky, the verbal repartee is so much fun. Ridiculous situations, resolved in even more ridiculous fashion, not to mention the designer in their midst...
I read this book in 6 hours or less because I was so hooked I couldn’t put it down. I love this author and all of her other pen names as well! This is a fantastic book!
