Gosho Aoyama (青山剛昌) is a Japanese manga artist. He is best known as the creator of the manga series Detective Conan (known in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom as Case Closed).
Aoyama made his debut as a manga artist with the work Chotto Matte which was published in the weekly magazine Shōnen Sunday on winter of 1987. Shortly after that, another work by Aoyama, Magic Kaito, was published on the same magazine.
Fun character dynamics, decent cases, and key progressions to the overarching narrative make for an enjoyable read. It's not a standout for the plot, but a good time for those who are fans of lesser utilised characters.
I believe I'm halfway through the series, so I'll add what I think is the halfway point of the series as another book read. Up to this point, the books can be described very much like X-files, in that there's an overarching story, and then there's a monster of the week (or case of the day, by this time I think tokyo has a massive problem with 365 homicides or more).
unrealism aside, the stories are still entertaining, although by now the author has mostly given up on trying to make his cases solvable by his readers. Its mostly just a case of "this is how clever the perp thought he/she was in commiting the murder (and its ALWAYS a murder), but look how much smarter conan is in solving the case!". It would get boring but there's always some changeup, like conan hanging out with his elementary school friends, and then the overarching story would come into play, which would make things more interesting.
I'm halfway between serious reading and skimming at this point, and only really read when its the overarching stories. Still, 4 stars because even after 41 volumes, its STILL interesting, which might speak more about what I find entertaining than anything else. =)
1. We finally see shinchi's mom and Ran's mom team up to solve another case!
2. It is quite an observation when Hibara said that shinchi has his mother's confidence and his dad's deduction skills!
3. The next case was interesting too for the tape that glows in the dark was a neat trick.
4. The two cases at the end of the volume was INTENSE! The curly hair guy was following them, plus Ms Judie found out about Hibara so omg. I will also need to re-read those two cases since the online translation is not accurate nor understandable.
This volume holds so much update for the main plot that I will have to re-read this with the official Viz Media translation.
Oh my god! Two people who are currently following Conan and Ai.
The first case where Yukiko and Eri teamed up was great, if for nothing more than their camaraderie. But the thrills were really there in this volume because of the suspicion cloud over the characters who may or may not belong to the Black organization.
This volume concludes a cliff-hanger from the previous volume as a way to kick off this volume. Without the previous volume the beginning of this will not make a lot of sense or mean much to you. Detective Moore is tied up while his estranged wife solves the case to bail him out. The next case involves a murder in which Detective Conan walks into a room to find a victim stabbed and a potential suspect standing over them! Was he the killer?!?! The next "case" involves the Syndicate growing closer and closer to Detective Conan and a sick Anita. This volume ends with a cliff-hanger....which seems to be the way far too many have been ending.

The two mothers, Eri and Yukiko, solve a case in a thrilling volume dedicated to the horizontal plot, featuring men in black and the FBI. We also get to explore something from Ai's past, which adds an intriguing layer to the story. The cliffhanger at the end leaves us on a high, eager to find out more!
General Synopsis: As mentioned above, I am going to write a proper review for this soon, but I have a few books ahead of this one in the queue, so I cannot stop reading DC NOW! That's sacrilege. I have decided to read all the chapters available up to now (we are almost to 1000!) As you can see, I am totally fangirling over here and I don't care, because this is one of my favorite manga series, ever! But all of this aside, there are a few things I wanted to list so I don't need to go back and look everything up when I do finally sit down and write my fangirl review. ✌🏻
DO NOT click on the spoiler link if you don't want to read all the cases in this volume, because it will ruin it for you. On the other hand, if you're a fan like me or are looking for a certain case (and please note, these are how I have set the cases), etc. click away, that's why it's there.
Another spoiler link, so don't click if you don't want to ruin this manga. I am going to include the characters introduced or as the series continues are in this volume. Personally, I think us DC fans love certain characters more than other (yes, Heiji, I mean you!), so sometimes when we are re-reading this series (like all the time!) you might wish to start at a specific case or start when a certain character is involved.
Characters in this volume:
Personal Opinion: #1, I never call this CASE CLOSED. If you do, you're not a true fan of this series, so don't even bother reading my review or my personal opinions. I'm sorry if I offend you, but you offended me first by telling me you want to read CASE CLOSED or you just love Jimmy.
#2, as you can tell by #1, I read this online. I would never waste my money buying a manga series in english that cannot get the name correct and mess up the main characters to make it appear more "ENGLISH." I am so happy I don't run a blog and this isn't a review on Sailor Moon, #1, because I have a huge soap box tirade against DiC. I also don't think there is anything against reading something online. Comics, which is what manga are, are meant to be read and shared and sometimes paying over $10 is too much in my opinion. Plus, I read the newest chapters as soon as they are released from Japan, because I would never miss a release of DC. So this is my personal shout out to you translators from me, Thank You!
Jimat jarum bius.
THE MILLION-YEN MYSTERY AND A SHOT IN THE DARK Kogoro is hired to protect a wealthy man but squanders most of his promised reward on reckless spending, leaving the case unsolved. Ran calls in her mother, Eri Kisaki, who teams up with Conan and unexpectedly crosses paths with Yukiko Kudo. As the investigation unfolds, old memories of a high-school pageant resurface, linking a forgotten ballot to their current intrigue. Later, the rich man is caught on camera—moments when he is being shot.
THE SHADOW BEHIND THE SILVER SCREEN Yukiko takes Conan, Haibara, and the Detective Boys to a special preview of the Kamen Yaiba movie, only to find it postponed until midnight. Before leaving for America, she warns Conan of a black car trailing them. The kids stay with a film crew member, but a late-night Mahjong game turns deadly when one of the players is found murdered in a pitch-black, chaotic apartment. Conan must determine how the killer struck in complete darkness without leaving a trace.
A DEADLY ENCOUNTER IN THE PARKING LOT While waiting for medical care for an ailing Haibara, Conan and Agasa make a detour to a shopping mall, where they spot four luxury Porsches—and a drunken man sleeping inside one. Later, as Conan dines with Ran, Sonoko, and Jodie, he grows uneasy when Jodie reacts strongly to Haibara’s name. His paranoia spikes after being interviewed on live TV, fearing the Black Organization may have seen him. Rushing back to retrieve Haibara, he finds the man in the Porsche dead—forcing him to uncover the truth before danger catches up to them.
Love the series! Love the suspense and thrilling cases in each volume!
Mainly a review to remind myself of the cases: 1. Eva Kaden and Vivian Kudo collaborate to solve a case. Who killed the Master of the house? It was the person in revenge for trying to destroy the late mistress's garden.
2. The marketing man is found dead on the couch. Who's the one who killed him? How could the killer kill in the dark, and what are those tapes around the home for?
3. 4 Porsche and Golf Friends, 3 are still alive, and one is found dead. How did the murderer kill outside the car? What does this have to do with the remote car sitting within that certain car?
4. The president of the design office has been poisoned, but the police can't find any poison anywhere. Where did the victim contact the poison from, and what does it have to do with the bathroom trash can? Also, will Anita/Sherry find what she is looking for??
In this volume, Erii and Conan's mom join forces to solve the case from the end of the last volume. Then, Conan's mom takes the Detective Boys to see an early screening of the new Yaiba movie, but the joy is interrupted when there's a murder (surprise!). A group of Porsche owners become murder suspects when one of their own is found dead, and then Conan and Ai investigate a place they believe Ai's sister may have left a hidden note.
After a solid entry in Vol. 40, this one was a bit of a letdown. I could say my favorite was the first, for having both Ran and Conan's moms who are both awesome, or the last because it has some plot implications, but the truth is, the stories in this book struck me as just average. Enjoyable, but nothing particularly standing out.
