Well, this was unexpected to say the least! I've never read anything by S.L. McInnis, but I could swear I read a Shari Lapena or BA Paris novel.
Framed
is utterly dark and twisty, interweaving multiple storylines and drama effortlessly.
The story is mainly centered behind Beth Crawford, her husband Jason (Jay) Montgomery, and her friend Cassie Oglivy. Beth and Jason live in Los Angeles where Beth teaches piano lessons to young children, while Jay is a film producer—trying to land his big break. Cassie and Beth haven't spoken in years—since their college days—but one day Cassie calls Beth and lets her know that she's coming to town, and wants to see her. As Beth and Cassie forge a reunion, Cassie's mysterious past is slowly starting to unravel. Why has Cassie returned and does Beth have anything to do with it?
Framed is definitely a book that took me by surprise. I didn't think that I'd enjoy it as much as I did. This book was almost FIVE STARS, but there's five point-of-view's in this book, and it really should've been left to three. There were two POV's that really were pointless and could've been baked into the other three. Besides this one critique, Framed was a dark, wild, and dare I say sexy, ride! I think this book will take readers for surprise as well—I am already calling it a sleeper hit to anyone who will listen. I guarantee you'll be on the edge of your seat and fully engulfed as I was. I was rooting for everyone, I angrily threw the book when someone pissed me off (there's a specific moment, and if you read this book, you'll know what I mean!!!!), and then I clapped by the end— Framed is just that good!

This was a fantastic book to read, I got it from Secret Readers who offer a choice of 6 ebooks to read chose one and you have 2 months to read it. This book hasn’t been published yet but it is a great book.
My only criticism is that there are a lot of characters and each chapter deals with that person so it can be quite hard to keep up.

Framed is exactly how I like my thrillers- quick pacing “framed” by on point writing, twists and turns, and lots of surprises. S.L. McInnis is a debut author we’ll be hearing from again and again. If you are looking for a solid thriller, pick this one up.

Is it awkward to give yourself 5 stars? I hope not! It's just because I loved writing this book so much. I found myself exploring so many themes in my life ... Identity, class, friendship, betrayal. All bound up in what I hope you'll find to be a fast-paced, cool, contemporary thriller. It's always been my favorite genre and I'm so humbled and grateful to have this chance to join the brilliant thriller writers who've inspired me. Too numerous to mention for fear of leaving someone out, but I'll be sharing my own reviews, too. Hope you enjoy reading FRAMED half as much as I did writing it ... Many thanks for sharing your thoughts! (btw my "date started" is the day I picked it up again, after setting it aside for a couple of years. And "date finished" is when editing ended ...)

Framed by S.L. McInnis is a book that I purchased the week it was published in 2020 and had sitting on display on my bookshelf, unread, until I decided I needed to read the books I already own before purchasing more, this was one of them! I cannot believe I let this one set so long, it was fantastic! This is part police procedural, psychological thriller, domestic drama, crime story, you name it - this story pretty much had it!
McInnis's writing is very relatable and addictive, which helped with the pacing making this a book that was incredibly hard to put down! If I had to compare this debut author's writing to anyone, it might be Shari Lapena, who is one of my favorites. That being said, this is an author everyone should take notice of!
Beth has recently suffered a miscarriage, and on top of financial struggles, her marriage to playboy, Jay, is a rocky one, to say the least. Enter charismatic bad girl, Cassie, who is on the run after stealing $1.5 million in drug money in her gym bag and nowhere and no one to turn to, except perhaps her old college roommate, Beth. Despite not knowing the reason Cassie has suddenly shown up on her front door after 12 years of no contact, Beth allows her to stay in her home for a few days, which is ultimately the beginning of the end life as she knows it! Not one dull moment followed, leading up to a major twist and climax-ending I definitely did not see coming, I LOVED it! I cannot wait to get my hands on this author's next release, and highly recommend this for anyone looking for a good time-read!!!

Cassie and Beth used to be roommates at college. Cassie turns up unexpectedly at Jay and Beth's home. It's obvious to the couple that Cassie is hiding something.
This is a it of a slow burner to start with. Cassie had always lived on the wild side. Beth had always been the more sensible one. The story is told from multiple points of view. Once Cassie comes and stays, the cracks begin to show in Jay and Beth's relationship. There's a couple of good twists near the end. I did not see one of them coming. Overall, this is a good debut novel.

This was fun & twisty! It’s an interesting combination of popcorn thriller with a dash of police procedural. I went in blind off a recommendation & highly recommend doing the same if you’re planning on reading this one. I listened via Audible & the narration was fantastic.

This was one wild ride of a read and I cannot get over the fact that it was a DEBUT! Can I say NAILED IT!?
This fast-paced psychological suspense was sprinkled with some police procedural (just the right amount, which I loved) and tells the story of two old friends with lots of secrets. Characters who aren’t what they appear be on the surface and as the story digs deeper into each of their stories, you literally won’t know who or what to believe.
I flew through this book in one day – thank goodness for snowstorms, keeping me indoors.
This story will have you guessing right until the end – where you’ll find yourself gasping with disbelief at how masterfully crafted the twist was – YOU WILL NOT SEE IT COMING, at least not until right before it drops. I loved the author’s fluid writing and the short chapters really helped keep a good pace, especially with the multiple points of view – bravo to the author for writing characters whose stories seamlessly blended well together. The ending was BRILLIANT and I literally applauded the author out loud when I finished.
A fast-paced and fully engaging story, Framed will grab you and keep you at the edge of your seat the entire way through. I am already anxiously awaiting this author’s next book #nopressure – she clearly has found her niche genre.

Holy cow did I love this one. I was so hooked from the first page with the shortness of the chapters, the multiple POV's. I really loved how this book was constructed. I flew through this book with no tomorrow.

I can't believe this is a debut novel. It was intricately written with non stop twists and turns throughout every page. It was a novel that kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. It's utterly dark, twisty and extremely well paced. It is a mix between a thriller and a police procedural I found that a bit of both made for such a perfectly constructed plot and storyline. McInnis really nailed this one.

Framed is a dark, twisty, sexy thriller with a fast-paced police procedural element. SL McInnis deftly explores toxic friendships, infidelity, drugs, and murder through a cast of characters who you may not trust, may not like, but won’t be able to get out of your head. Her writing is crisp, concise and propulsive, and the ending will blow your mind. Highly recommend!

Some of the actions don't make sense. They're just not rational.
The ending is supposed to be a shock but I found it a bit anticlimactic and not wrapped up enough.

Framed is a fast-paced, easy-to-read, suspense novel! I had a lot of fun with this one.
Beth is music teacher living in California with her husband Jason, a film producer struggling to find the finances to keep his newest client. Beth is surprised when she gets a call from her old college roommate, Cassie, whom she hasn't heard from in years. Meanwhile we also have the perspective of a local police officer who is working on a drug-related murder case in the area. How is everything connected? Well you'll have to read to find out!
This is a great debut from S.L. McInnis! I suspected many things throughout the story, but I didn't have the ending figured out! PLZZZZZZZZ say this author is out there somewhere writing another book!!! THIS BOOK IS SO GOOD! I loved every second of it. Minus all the sex stuff but oh well. I need more from this author.

Framed is the story about two former college roommates who meet up after years apart - each with secrets to keep. The timing of my review is quite fortuitous since I'm writing my review on the day that I'm going to see one of my university roommates. Thankfully, Angela and I are not at all like the characters in this book. Phew!
Let me start off by saying that it's hard to believe, but this impressive novel is the debut by Toronto-based author Sheri McInnis. She hits the ground running with a dark, twisty read that is a 'dark psychological thriller meets domestic drama with a side of police procedural'. It has good twists, an interesting array of characters and short chapters that unravel a story of secrets and deceptions. The story's focus is often on the complicated relationships with the gritty crime/police procedural aspect being downplayed a bit more than I would have predicted - although the high energy action scenes later on made up for it.
The story takes place over three days and is told by five POVs (Beth, Cassie, Jay, Detective Goode and Rick) who are an interesting bunch - all are a little unlikable and a bit of a train wreck in varying degrees. The main story centres around Beth Crawford, her marriage to Jay, and her friendship with Cassie Ogilvy, her wild college roommate but my favourite character was easily Detective Goode. This twisty story also includes several issues: toxic relationships, marriage, friendship, betrayal, and deception making it a good pick for book club discussion.
Overall, I was impressed with this debut which reads like McInnis is an old pro at suspense writing. Her writing is concise, her pacing is strong and that last twist?! Oh m'word! McInnis is a great addition to the Canadian suspense scene. I eagerly look forward to reading more from her (and I'm excited to hear she's already working on the sequel!).

Beth and Jay are married; she is a music teacher and he’s a movie director. However, their Hollywood lifestyle hides the reality―they are struggling for money and their marriage has problems.
Cassie’s in trouble; she ran from a crime scene with the drug money. Now she needs a hideout and the only person in Los Angeles that she knows is Beth. She and Beth shared a room at college and Cassie always said that Beth owed her a favour. They haven’t seen each other for a few years, but Beth isn’t particularly thrilled to hear from Cassie, because she remembers her as being irresponsible, a party girl and someone that she had hoped to forget.
Cassie’s arrival becomes the catalyst to Beth’s current life, as everything begins to fall apart until Jay discovers Cassie’s hidden money. Should they keep it? Could this be the turning point they desperately need?
The story is written in short chapters between five different characters. At first this was a lot to keep abreast of and I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy it. However, once I was settled in, it became much easier to follow. The story focuses more on the action and relationships between Beth, Cassie and Jay, while the police investigations which trail Cassie are kept in the background.
I liked the ending, but I didn’t completely believe in the changes that occurred to one of the main characters. I thought there was too much explanation into this particular character’s background, instead of using the strength of the narrative to create clues for the reader to discover.
Overall, a good debut novel, it just needs a bit more grit and tension rather than explanation in the build up to the climax, especially if it wants to attract avid readers of this genre.

Overall, a good debut novel, it just needs a bit more grit and tension rather than explanation in the build up to the climax, especially if it wants to attract avid readers of this genre.

A very solid psychological thriller - 3.5 rounded up. It takes a bit for all the characters to collide but it is action packed and something happens in every chapter which keeps you flipping.
Framed follows many POVs but tells the story of two college friends who are reunited after many years apart. One of them has the perfect husband and house and the other is on the run with money stolen from a drug lord. When they finally meet up both their lives explode in ways they never see coming.
It’s a wild ride and almost every character you want to hate but you can’t look away. The reveals keep coming and while you’ll see some of them coming there were definitely twists that surprised me. A very well plotted thriller.

I had a hard time getting into this book. I never felt like I knew any of the characters, so I wasn't invested in any of them, and the plot took too long to come together. Sadly, by the time the twist was revealed I was too bored to really care. I gave it 2 stars because I did finish it.

Detective Francis Goode is called to the scene of a bloodbath narcotics shooting. Four dead, Cassie on the run. Cassie calls Beth for a place to hide out but, of course, she doesn't tell Beth anything about this. That Cassie is bad news any way you look at it.
Chapters were clearly marked with names and times. The short chapters were points of view from Beth, Cassie, Jay, Goode and Rick. The pace of the book moved quickly. I wasn't sure of the point of a couple scenes with Jay's dad. Apparently, I expected a different outcome but the author didn't go where I thought.
None of the characters were very likeable. Sometimes that detracts from the story but in this case, it didn't. There's a lot of big twists toward the end and I do like this type of book. I'm also really, really happy to be reading a 2020 book.

I struggled to get going with this... there is a lot going on at the beginning and I felt it should have drawn me in, but I just felt confused.... all the way through the book has the same format, chapters told from one of a number character perspectives. Once I got going and knew who everyone was, the format was good and makes for a easy read with a good pace.
We start with a botched drug deal, an attempted murder and a fugitive while we also have the story of Beth and Jay - married a few years, lots of debt, not very good at much, both unhappy in their careers but trying to get along. Beth's old college friend Cassie, comes to stay and the two worlds come together. There is more going on with Cassie than Beth knows... but Cassie isn't speaking but you get the sense early on this wasn't going to end well for anyone involved. I didn't see the end coming... there is a good twist in the tale but, as a reader, I didn't really feel I'd had the clues to work this out. A bit of a scooby doo ending where the reader is told what happened....
In many ways, I like this book - the short chapters and different perspectives make it quite difficult to put down... I kept thinking 'I'll just read one more chapter' and before I knew it, I'd read the whole book! I think the major downfall for me is that I didn't really like any of the characters in this book. Even the ones I was supposed to like, I didn't. Consequently, the story doesn't pack nearly the punch it would have if I felt in any way invested in the characters. Beth and Jay are just boring. He is a total idiot and she is a doormat so the way things played out just seemed unlikely in view of this relationship.
This is a good, easy read. Something different which does hold attention - if you can get past the first few chapters!

I usually read romance or fantasy stories, but I love horror movies and crime dramas, so I wanted to give the thriller and suspense category a try. I came across Framed in the audible sale and the synopsis sounded intriguing so I took the chance and downloaded it.
I nearly returned it after the first chapter simply based on the writing style. It is SO hard for me to connect to a story when the author writes it in third person. I told myself to give it at least 25% before deciding to call it quits. Turns out that was a good call. While the characters never really came to life for me, the story itself kept me interested. There were so many twists and turns and different story threads to follow that I managed to get passed the narration.
Honestly, this story kept me guessing until the very end. Every time I thought I figured out what was going on, something else would happen. It was a great story and I'm glad I stuck with it.

Multiple murders, a bag full money, a woman on the run, a couple trying to get by and a detective trying to solve a case. I thought this was a good murder mystery . I thank Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Beths life is not going the greatest after her miscarriage and things keep getting worse when her old college roommate Cassie squirms her way back into her life.
Cassie is on the run and quickly running out of options so she stirs up trouble where ever she goes including in Beths bed with her husband.
The perspectives are really short which keep the story moving quickly. Following officers that are in Cassies wake and Beth and her husband Jay. You think you know whats going on until the end when you dont know who to trust, who to believe.
Ps the spine of the hardback is beautiful!

This is an amazing book by a debut author. I loved this book and it definitely didn’t feel like a debut book. The book starts out with a chaotic and violent crime scene that instantly hooks you into the story. Beth and Jay have enough problems in their life and marriage and those are compounded once Beth’s college friend, Cassie, comes to stay with them. Unfortunately Cassie has been trouble ever since Beth first met her. Cassie and Beth seem like polar opposites and unlikely friends and Jay is confused about their connection. Jay has enough problems of his own and they are compounding! I really liked the writing style and the story is fast paced. There are a lot of twists and turns that keep you guessing. I recommend that you check this one out if you are a thriller lover.
