I received a free copy of this book in return for an honest review. As this is a newer book I have tried to provide a longer review.

By way of background, I do not tend to be an anxious person and am usually pretty even keeled so I cannot speak to how well the tools provided work for those with anxiety. Stress is a reality of life though as is dealing with difficult people so I approached reading this as a busy mom looking for ways to keep life balanced.

I like Susi's honesty and practical approach. She writes as though she is speaking to you which I generally found made a nice read. There are many different tools provided throughout the book which make it easy for referencing and to pick and choose what you want to try. By the halfway point I realised this book is essentially a succinct version of 80% of what I learned over a few years of learning and making lifestyle changes - healthy diet choices, prioritise sleep, be active, volunteer, be intentional about your schedule, set boundaries, and practise self care. If I'd read this and implemented a decent majority of it I'd have saved myself a lot of other reading and learning.

I'm not into crystals and reiki but I think her other advice - affirmations and visualisation - around being intentionally positive (especially with how negative media can be) is important. As a Christian, I think a lot of what Susi says serves as a good reminder to memorise scripture, pray, take our thoughts captive, and dwell on things above. She talks about speaking affirmations which for Christians I think also includes speaking God's word into our lives. The Bible tells us what power there is through words and affirmations are one form of harnessing that power.

Sometimes the terminology used can make her techniques sound whimsical or hippie but I have used some of these approaches with success for several years (such as a bath or shower to wash away the day and reset). I like the idea of visualising a bubble around me to block out negativity during the day or in the lead up to being around particular people. She also recommends the Buddhist practice of loving-kindness and while I'm not into buddhism, the principle as described by Susi sounds similar to the instruction for Christians to pray for their enemies. You can't genuinely pray for someone without it changing your heart toward them.

I'm a big fan of helping others through volunteering which is something Susi recommends as it has long been shown to positively affect the volunteer. I've heard of oil pulling multiple times so after reading it here decided to give it a go - it's not for me. Taking an Epsom salt bath was nice though it comes as no surprise to me that I liked it as I have long enjoyed a soak with a book.

Overall, I thought this was a good book with a variety of approaches to pick and choose from so that there's something for everyone but not everything will be for everyone.

Susi’s practical ideas and recommendations for reducing and controlling anxiety have been a huge help to me. Easy to read, not too much sciencey stuff to bamboozle you, it allows you to put each idea into practise one chapter at a time. Thank you Susi. Now when I speak badly to myself I can rap and stop 🙏
