Now equipped with the mystical Berserker Armor, Guts fights on against the dragon-form of Grunbeld and his legion of fanatic apostle soldiers. But the very armor that holds Guts together — in a nightmarishly literal sense — might be the last straw that tears his tortured mind apart! While Guts struggles to hold his own against his inner demons, monsters of a very different sort rally in Windham as the Kushan Emperor, Ganishka, and the newly reborn Griffith rally their forces in a head-to-head struggle for control of all of Midland. But when the dust finally settles, there may be little left of the kingdom to claim!
Kentarou Miura (三浦建太郎) was born in Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture, Japan, in 1966. He is left-handed. In 1976, at the early age of 10, Miura made his first Manga, entitled "Miuranger", that was published for his classmates in a school publication; the manga ended up spanning 40 volumes. In 1977, Miura created his second manga called Ken e no michi (剣への道 The Way to the Sword), using Indian ink for the first time. When he was in middle school in 1979, Miura's drawing techniques improved greatly as he started using professional drawing techniques. His first dōjinshi was published, with the help of friends, in a magazine in 1982.
That same year, in 1982, Miura enrolled in an artistic curriculum in high school, where he and his classmates started publishing their works in school booklets, as well as having his first dōjinshi published in a fan-produced magazine. In 1985, Miura applied for the entrance examination of an art college in Nihon University. He submitted Futanabi for examination and was granted admission. This project was later nominated Best New Author work in Weekly Shōnen Magazine. Another Miura manga Noa was published in Weekly Shōnen Magazine the very same year. Due to a disagreement with one of the editors, the manga was stalled and eventually dropped altogether. This is approximately where Miura's career hit a slump.
In 1988, Miura bounced back with a 48-page manga known as Berserk Prototype, as an introduction to the current Berserk fantasy world. It went on to win Miura a prize from the Comi Manga School. In 1989, after receiving a doctorate degree, Kentarou started a project titled King of Wolves (王狼, ōrō?) based on a script by Buronson, writer of Hokuto no Ken. It was published in the monthly Japanese Animal House magazine in issues 5 and 7 of that year.
In 1990, a sequel is made to Ourou entitled Ourou Den (王狼伝 ōrō den, The Legend of the Wolf King) that was published as a prequel to the original in Young Animal Magazine. In the same year, the 10th issue of Animal House witnesses the first volume of the solo project Berserk was released with a relatively limited success. Miura again collaborated with Buronson on manga titled Japan, that was published in Young Animal House from the 1st issue to the 8th of 1992, and was later released as a stand-alone tankōbon. Miura's fame grew after Berserk was serialized in Young Animal in 1992 with the release of "The Golden Age" story arc and the huge success of his masterpiece made of him one of the most prominent contemporary mangakas. At this time Miura dedicates himself solely to be working on Berserk. He has indicated, however, that he intends to publish more manga in the future.
In 1997, Miura supervised the production of 25 anime episodes of Berserk that aired in the same year on NTV. Various art books and supplemental materials by Miura based on Berserk are also released. In 1999, Miura made minor contributions to the Dreamcast video game Sword of the Berserk: Guts' Rage. 2004 saw the release of yet another video game adaptation entitled Berserk Millennium Falcon Arc: Chapter of the Record of the Holy Demon War.
Since that time, the Berserk manga has spanned 34 tankōbon with no end in sight. The series has also spawned a whole host of merchandise, both official and fan-made, ranging from statues, action figures to key rings, video games, and a trading card game. In 2002, Kentarou Miura received the second place in the Osamu Tezuka Culture Award of Excellence for Berserk.[1]
Miura provided the design for the Vocaloid Kamui Gakupo, whose voice is taken from the Japanese singer and actor, Gackt.
Miura passed away on May 6, 2021 at 2:48 p.m. due to acute aortic dissection.
The "mostly black" swordsman new armor proved pretty lethal to enemies, and to guts alike he needs to control himself more, be more kind, be more happy, and accepting of everything, and i think that's what's happening lately, he is coming to terms with his new group, and with his love for Casca, and her new state, and he isn't mean all the time anymore, he is maturing lol. The band of the hawk lancer group is pretty powerful, specially their leader locus, how can you kill an apostle made of steel? The emperor is freakish strong on his own, without no army, his armies are all bums really they, can't stand to a single apostle it seems, but he looked like he can take on the entirety of the lancer group, and beat them all, and not even break a sweat. Looks like we will have the team around for a long long time, maybe till the end of the manga too. Farnesse is going to be a witch disciple. Casca has a pretty new necklace. Serpico is going to stay wherever farnesse is really. Shierke like Guts already, and she is going to stick with him as well. So yeah we are pretty tight. On to the next ❤
Unfortunatly the Grunbeld vs Guts fight didn't come to a conculution. Schierke had to make a astral journey in to Guts in berserker armor and she reached out to Guts who was lost in the armor's control in total rage. When Guts regained his control, he quited fighting against Grunbeld and went to rescue of the gang and then they ran away. The fight was happening at the forest of the witch Flora, so she interveined and stoped Grunbeld from following Guts and the gang.
Then we got in Emperor Ganishka story. He totally concured midland, and rebeled as an apostle against the lord of the all apostles Griffith. Ganishka's totally a monster. His evil rituals of making pregnant women give birth to demon babies is totally gross and messed up... And he feeds people to his crocodiles in a pitt and watches while it happens... ewww
The thing about Berserk is its not just some random hack and slash with gore manga, its much more than that. It has deep philosophical explorations of its own, and so much character development. This time, the particular instance of Schierke and Farnese. Its just a joy to see them grow and reach this point.
the war demons aka the band of the hawk 2.0/kushan aka demon emperor + makeshift apostles skirmish....what a mess. the inevitable Charlotte/Griffith meeting...🤮 Farnese the ex witch hunter enthusiastic leader now....a witch disciple? 🤔 hmmmm
Enter Berserker Armor! We're right back to good shit. Even the Griffith bits don't bother me so much because we get to meet Emperor Ganishka, one of the worst shitnuggets in the entire story. He's got some delightful design to him.
I identify a lot with Silat right now. All this stuff going on with Ganishka versus the new Band of the Hawk, and I'm just like... wut.
I don't believe I commented on this earlier, but I like how the fantasy creatures (trolls, ogres, kelpies) are born from the Interstice between the material and ethereal worlds, and Femto's incarnation into the material world has fucked things up such that fairy-tale critters are taking new life (actually, I feel like I did write this before?). But, that said, the Apostles and other demons and things are a separate thing. Zodd has been around for ages, and he's a bigger threat than any ogre. Is Ganishka powerful because of Femto's birth, or is he just powered by a Behelit as well, or is he something else entirely? The "dark fantasy" and "high fantasy / fairy-tale" themes don't align too easily. Well, I don't know. It's not a bad thing, as Guts is still strong enough to face most things; the Berserker Armor comes out to face higher-tier Apostles rather than ogres or trolls, and it's kind of necessary to be able to fight the God Hand in their true forms, if that's going to happen eventually. The main thing is Serpico and Isidro got new gear to help against magical enemies, but they've never really gone toe-to-toe with Apostles so it works out either way.
The Holy Evil War Chapter comes to an end, but... I don't know. The arc is really cool, and a lot of neat stuff happened, but I kind of really feel like it should have been divided more specifically into Griffith's war against the Kushan as the actual "Holy Evil War," then some other title for Guts and the gang meeting Flora and Schierke. Like, there's some crossover with the Grunbeld fight, but... also not really. Shit gets pretty wild: trolls then an ogre and a kelpie then more trolls then Slan incarnates herself (and there are more ogres) then that resolves rather quickly so Grunbeld can come almost out of nowhere to be the major boss fight for Guts in this arc (accompanied by rather high-level Apostle warriors). The power-scaling keeps tipping over. Meanwhile we also have a bunch of other new Apostles coming up (including Grunbeld) and new Pseudos (I guess?), being Ganishka's army. And Ganishka turns into like a lightning spirit(!?). But Femto still just looks like Griffith as a human. Then, according to the table of contents, the Holy Evil War Chapter ends without us seeing Ganishka's defeat, so... will we see it further in the Falconia Chapter? Well, I'll stay tuned. I already bought the Deluxe Edition volume containing 28-30!
Someone needs to cleave Zodd's other horn, because the asymmetry just looks silly at certain angles.

Even in the midst of the crazy action, Miura still manages to pack in so much meaning and symbolism. The first chapters with Guts in the Berserker Armor were so epic but at the same time heartbreaking to read. As the world devolves and becomes more monstrous, Guts has no option but to become a monster himself to merely survive. We have been seeing his rage and anger building up since the start of this arc, but to see him truly lose himself via the Berserker Armor filled me with immense sadness. But of course, leave it to Casca to be that light that will bring Guts back to humanity every time.
In a world of darkness and death, Guts chooses to defy everything and fight not only for his own way but also for the light that he chooses. The way Miura is constantly able to visit this and add more meaning to it is beyond beautiful. It is the strongest aspect that makes Berserk the masterpiece that it is and Guts one of the most phenomenal characters I have ever read.
Finally Berserk becomes interesting again! After the Golden Arc has ended the manga got really boring. The most of time I was too troubled by it to continue reading. But now ... woah ... so many awesome scenes, great dialogues, an absolute fantastic concept art (gosh, I'm so impressed by the author's fantasy you can't imagine) and finally an overarching plot line again! I look forward with great expectation to the next volumes!

The 26th volume of Berserk is an emotional roller coaster, highlighted by its early chapters where Guts confronts the struggle with the Berserker Armor. The connection between Guts and Schierke deepens, revealing layers of the protagonists. The exploration of Guts' ego concept adds a fascinating psychological dimension, further enriching the complexity of the protagonist.
Griffith's involvement in this volume adds a dose of intrigue, marking his return, at least in a more active form. His engagement in the plot promises exciting developments. I am eager to discover how his presence will influence the future of the story. Berserk continues to showcase its mastery in dark and visually striking narrative, solidifying itself as an essential work for any manga enthusiast.
(Zero spoiler review for Deluxe edition 9, which this volume is part of) Sadly, this started off and reinforced every tiresome, frustrating aspect of this series for me, and once again, had me contemplating selling my entire deluxe collection. Yet something kept me pushing through this, as it has done many times in the past when similar feelings of annoyance have overcome this highly praised (and it must be said, overrated) reading experience. Volume 25 was one of the weakest offerings yet, with the near 200 page book focusing on one rather uninteresting and pointless battle. The dialogue was sparse and was Muira at his worst. The characters which I despise and pray to the literary gods will die very time I turn the page, were in peak cringe mode. Yet, thankfully, when volume 26 arrived, things quickly improved, straying back onto a darker, more interesting path. And perhaps even better, continued to improve right up through volume 27 and the end of the deluxe edition (which currently is not available to review here for some reason). Dialogue became richer, more poetic... more frequent. We stopped fighting boring fodder and started running into some old and rather formidable favourites. I started to fall in love with the series again. I was reminded why so many people worship Berserk. And whilst there is too much filler and not enough killer across this long running series to have me on my knees praising this book to hell and back. When its this bloody good, thoughts of not continuing with these deluxe editions became a very distant memory indeed. 4.5/5 for volume 27.
That last panel got me kinda emotional. I wanted Flora to last longer in the story :(
𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟑𝟏 "𝐃𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐫"
This scene of Charlotte with the Kushan emperor was…interesting?
𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟑𝟑 "𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐧 𝐊𝐧𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭"
That scene of the woman giving birth gave birth trauma…
𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟑𝟓 "𝐒𝐥𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐧𝐬"
𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐮𝐦 𝐅𝐚𝐥𝐜𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐫𝐜: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐥𝐲 𝐄𝐯𝐢𝐥 𝐖𝐚𝐫 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫 has come to an end. This mini chapter was packed with information, and although I didn’t really enjoy this side of it —especially this volume— I really enjoyed following the squad on their journey and loved to see them bonding and developing. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐥𝐲 𝐄𝐯𝐢𝐥 𝐖𝐚𝐫 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫 felt like a set-up to the next chapter, and although Griffith is kinda getting on my nerves right now, I’m still interested enough to learn what’s happening next.
𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟑𝟔 "𝐑𝐨𝐚𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐚"
This was my favourite chapter in this volume! Great start to the 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐮𝐦 𝐅𝐚𝐥𝐜𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐫𝐜: 𝐅𝐚𝐥𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐚 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫. I love how Miura randomly gave us the typical beach chapter in mangas😂 I loved seeing Guts being gentle with Schierke, and I loved seeing him just chill and smile at his friends’s banter in that cottage. And the shy and lonely Skull Knight is just watching from outside lol. Also, how could I be this oblivious? Guts got some white hair nearly 10 chapters ago, and I just noticed it now that Isidro brought it up!
Watching what was once one of the most unlikeable people in fiction become warm hearted in tender over the course of 27 volumes and over 200 pages so far is exactly my sort of thing, this volume in particular has some of the sweetest guts moments, I just love it
Conviction is still my favourite, but fuck, this arc was special to me. I love that magic has been solidified into the world now. Before, the only real "magic" we saw was Puck and his healing dust. Everything else has been dark cult rituals and demonic powers. This magic really does feel like an opponent to the powers of the demons, and I like that only Shierke can access it, because it makes it more mysterious. We only see this magic through Shierke, avoiding all the issues of trying to flesh out a full magic system.
Shierke is the goat, she is such an interesting character. She is so incredibly vulnerable. A child who has lost her home, a tiny magician that enters a trance when she casts spells, utterly helpless. She she's also so powerful, she flooded an entire fucking city. She's easily the most powerful ally we've had in the series (except Skull Knight). This mix is really interesting, as it contrasts Guts really well. Guts is extremely guarded and fortified, and I feel like Shierke really inspired him, seeing her strength *because* of her weakness, not in spite of it. Shierke and Isidro might be one of my favourite pairings. Shierke sees him as an idiot monkey boy (my poor baby), but this likely comes from emotional barriers she's put up to protect her ego, which is really interesting to see. Despite this, Isidro is pretty open about how tiny Shierke makes him feel. He had to show his usefulness to Guts, because he met Guts back when he was still a dickhead. A really interesting parallel was that Casca was forcefully taken in front of Isidro, and Guts blew up at him, while Shierke accidentally flushed Casca and Farnese away, and Guts had a really touching moment with her. I always love to see Guts grow, but it also makes me feel bad for Puck and Isidro because of how hard they had to work for Guts to trust them. So far, Shierke's main interactions have been with Guts and Isidro, so I'm very excited to see how she interacts with the rest of the team (especially Farnese now). I can see her getting frustrated with teaching magic, especially in the high stakes world Mirua built.
Isidro's arc was really interesting this time, and again, I love the contrast with Guts. Guts had to survive and learned to fight out of nessecity, then met Griffith and decided he needed a dream. Isidro's dream is to be a great swordfighter, which is so sweet. I love him and Guts training, his interactions with the old man, and his cool dagger. I felt really bad for him for a while during this arc. Seeing someone as young as Shierke be that powerful really made him lose his confidence. He spent a long time trying to emulate others, using a big sword like Guts and trying to be as useful as Shierke. This made the moment in the tunnels all the more powerful, especially when Shierke was taken aback by his skill. It's a trope I love to see every time: a character trying to be the best and fail, only to step back and realise what their true skill is. Also, him playing in the sea at the end was really sweet. And him and puck are the goats.
We got some Serpico backstory at the start of this arc as well. He's always served someone, that being his mother or Farnese, and this has been truly impactful to him. No matter what, he serves effectively and protects Farnese above all. (I love the panel from Conviction where Guts cuts through a stone pillar and Serpy has a little side eye at it while still fighting). He's a dedicated fighter and dedicated to Farnese, so I hope him and Guts have a conversation about dreams at some point. My favourite Serpy moment may have been him descending from the tower to fight alongside Guts. Finally, Guts has allies that he can fight alongside again. Peak Serpy.
I was worried for Farnese and Casca at the start of this arc. With Farnese being put in charge of Casca, it felt like they would be reduced to side characters. It was also a red flag when everyone got sick ass magic weapons, but Casca and Farnese got armour. However, I did forget that Farnese was only commander because the Holy Iron Chain Knights were essentially decoration. When she began to fight on the top of the church, that's when I realised she was goated. Her arc hasn't been as prominent as Isidro or Shierke, but it's been there. Her quiet admiration and envy of Guts and her need to protect, to finally be useful. I hope she gets to learn a little bit of magic. She was a dick in Conviction, but now she's part of the team.
Guts has been through it this arc. The start of the arc was crazy. I was really torn. I understood why he did what he did, but tying up Casca was too far. That image was so impactful, and I cried a little bit. Reminded me slightly of "Gods Own Country" by Ross Raisin. Poor Casca. Guts letting in new people was great aswell. At the start, it was out of apathy, but the scene of his new friends side-by-side with the old band of the hawk, oh my god, I teared up. The fact that Guts spent so much time alone during Black Swordsman, and spent so much time pushing away Puck, this was so sweet. I love that Guts will sometimes go back to his former self, but from his new perspective. He no longer slays huge monsters and kills 100 men out of rage or out of a warped desire to kill, but he does it to protect those that he cares about. Seeing him infront of the huge orge or the new "Band of the Hawk" (hate the name, more like band of the cock) reminds me of how far he's grown. And THE GODHAND COMING BACK??? My smartwatch notified me that my stress levels had increased. That was a good reminder that Guts is super strong now, but still has a long way before his goal. And the Behelit sword was so cool aswell. Guts can also sleep again now, thanks to him letting Shierke protect him. He also indirectly says that he depends on her on the beach, saying that he needs her to stop him from going Berserk. The Guts and Shierke relationship is really interesting, and I can't wait to see it play out. Guts has grown so much, I just hope he and Casca can be together again. But I fear his hatred of the Godhand is too strong. He's doomed to become another Skull Knight.
My only concern with *this arc* was Puck and Ivalera. I feel like Puck was so pivotal to Black Swordsman, I just wish he would get more poignant moments. I do love Chestnut Puck though, and how simplified Ivalera is just her, and puck turns into a fucking nut.

Sad times for Schierke, but Guts must battle on in his newly acquired armour...with pretty dire consequences! We also return to Midland under Kushan occupation.....a nasty, demon city indeed! Emperor is up to some gross stuff. Amazing battle scenes, with some stunning looking Apostles. Wow.
This volume brings us the conclusion of the “Holy Evil War chapter” of the “Millennium Falcon Arc” and transitions into the “Falconia Chapter” of the same arc. We see the conclusion of the current conflict protagonists find themselves in. After that we are introduced to characters of new and reintroduced to those of old. The Dread Emperor is up to no good and has incredibly evil intentions. However, fighting causality itself may prove too big for even HIM to handle. Oh, Griffith is there too but fuck that guy fr fr who gives a shit about him.
good grief!!!!!!!! guts character development is a stark contrast of who he was in the prologue of the series, finding his old self and trust in his little group of unlikely comrades. its so heartening and deserving of guts to be who he is now.
