Astounding world building! A difficult to put down book, with unusual discoveries and fascinating revelations. The Enemy of All Life is presented in all its horrifying glory! The implications of that were just too horrible to even contemplate! A spell-binding read, I was so glued to the story, it even felt too short a read! I think it’s one of the best premises in the series! Can’t wait for Worlds Apart #6 to launch!
Jn Chaney and Terry Maggert did it again, this is a page turner and fast read. Humor mixed with awesome mech fights and horrible enemies. Highly recommend.
The fifth entry of authors J.N. Chaney and Terry Maggert’s The Messenger series, akin to its precursors, opens with a databank on key terms as a reminder to those unfamiliar with the books’ terminology, along with a helpful synopsis for those who choose to break from the series to read other literature. Dash embraces his destiny as the Messenger, the pilot of a mech known as the Archetype, with his and his companions’ crusade against the antagonistic Golden, who despite all life outside their species, metamorphosing well beyond a local conflict. Along the way, he makes allies such as the piratic Gentle Friends, with their base, the Forge, gradually regaining its capability.
Heroes Dash and Leira continue to seek the material known as Dark Metal so that the Forge can continue to enforce the coalition he eventually dubs as the Realm of Cygnus. The flotilla travels, with Dash attempting to secure the alliance of the Aquarian Collective, meeting one of its leaders, Al’Bijea. More information about the Golden comes to light, and Dash encounters the rival mech known as Harbinger. A new enemy known as the Verity also appears, with space battles continuing for several chapters, the leaders of the Cygnus Realm examining whatever spoils of war they obtain, with occasional interrogation of the enemy aliens.
A few twists about in the epilogue, with this particular entry of the science-fiction franchise ultimately being every bit as satisfying as its predecessors, given the presence of many interesting personas and well-described sci-fi action, even if the concept of giant mechs central to battle not exactly being a novel concept, given its use in media largely outside the books. As seems the case with most literature within and without the series, moreover, some reminders as to the appearances of characters would have helped with imagining them better. Regardless, the books still hold my interest, and I will continue reading them to see how their overarching narrative progresses.
First of all, regardless of how good the story is, I have to comment on how well edited this whole series is. Believe me, that is extremely important to me because a poorly edited book is a chore to read. Chaney, whoever your editor is, give ‘em a raise. Now the book. I’ve read the whole series so far and have enjoyed every single book. The only downside is that they have a tendency to drag. That, and the length of time between releases. Invariably I have to go back and read the last one to keep up to date with what’s going on. But hey, that’s all I can complain about. Great series, great writing, and particularly great editing.
I am sorry to say that this series hasn’t fired my enthusiasm as much as others. I’m not sure what it is but I stopped reading it a couple of times because I was more interested in other books etc. Suffice it to say that Dash and company are slowly finding allies and destroying more enemies. It puzzles me that The Verity always attacks them with medium strength vessels but as our forces get stronger so The Verity pulls out bigger guns etc. As Dash said at one point “we’re always playing catch-up”. Some readers will like all the action though so I think that it warrants 4 stars.
Okay, this is getting really good now. My first 5 star rating for The Messenger
This series is a little different to the Backyard Starship series, a little darker / grimmer, and it's no worse off for it.
Knowing zero about wars and conflict, this provides some insight into the choices required and the potential stark realities. But with a dose of humour and varied / conflicting character types.
I'm not trying to make this sound like a gruesome, gore splatterfest, just differentiate it from the other series for potential readers. I'm truly enjoying both, averaging one a day at the moment in The Messenger series.
The continued adventures of the Messenger. But on this one they start building more Alliances and the world building really kick up a notch. Its surprising how easy it is to fall for all this characters and the overall story is a lot of fun. On this one they are trying to gain alliances that they will need in their struggle against the Golden. Both man and AI are learning off each other and how to work better together. What is surprising is that in doing so they make each other better. Lots of action as expected.
Dash and crew which has grown immensely and is quite diversified in their backgrounds is now taking the battle to the Verity an Alien species whose only quest, desire is the total elimination of mankind or any other similar species. They are relentless and are barbaric in their actions toward anyone who they seem an enemy. Non stop action. Another excellent read in this series. My highest recommendation!!
Still a good read, just not the best of the series so far. Despite that it’s still a good read with well rounded characters and a good storyline. If you’re this deep into the series you won’t be disappointed, if you’re starting out, start at the beginning... even the worst of this series is better than the best of the majority.
As Dash and friends fight the battle against the Golden, new enemies arrive with tactics they haven't seen before! Can they adapt and overcome them, with our human abilities only? With the help of the Forge, the two mechs, the Archetype and the Swift, we will see...
Okay now that was very interesting and action packed. But, the Messenger needs a bigger army, more unseen tech ships and crews. This war can not be fought long on just enough recources. Expansion, planning, training and then aggressive execution of those tenets get you the prize. Thanks for a GoodRead.
Read it now if you know anything about dash and his band. I picked it up and was a third of the way through before I even realized it. It took me four reads and two days which but me in the wife's bad books lol. Like I said read it but make sure your free to just read and read.
Well once again you have out done yourself lol. What a cracking storyline again with plenty of action and banter as it should be lol. Looking forward to the next book hopefully out soon
More fantastic adventures for the Messenger as he and his team being forces together and pursue the Golden in this galactic adventure. A very good read and an excellent series!
The pace of action is not fast, but that helps the storyline develop the characters and expanding mission. This actually makes the planning, struggles, resources needed more realistic. Can’t wait for then next exciting book!
I loved this book and I can't wait for the next one 😀 Great characters with realistic situations and lots of action and adventure. On to the next installment.
The storyline continues developing finding new challenges for our small group of heroes and new allies. The progressive tech development keeps the plot interesting and the battles scenes provide decent tension and doubt.
I have read each book of the series and have enjoyed each and everyone. I will continue to read this series and that is the best recommendation I can give.
