From Katherine Center, New York Times bestselling author of How to Walk Away, comes a short story The Girl in the Plane, featuring Cassie Hanwell, the courageous female firefighter at the heart of Things You Save in a Fire.
BookPage calls Katherine Center “the reigning queen of comfort reads.” She’s the New York Times bestselling author of eleven novels, including The Bodyguard, Hello Stranger, Things You Save in a Fire, and her summer 2024 book, The Rom-Commers. Katherine writes laugh-and-cry books: bittersweet romantic comedies about how life knocks us down—and how we get back up. She’s been compared to both Jane Austen and Nora Ephron, and the Dallas Morning News calls her stories, “satisfying in the most soul-nourishing way.” The Netflix movie adaptation of her novel Happiness for Beginners—starring Ellie Kemper and Luke Grimes—just hit the Global Top Ten in 81 countries, and the movie of her novel The Lost Husband was a surprise Netflix sensation in 2020, hitting number one and landing in their top 25 movies for the year. Her books have made countless Best-Of lists—at Audible, BookBub, and Book of the Month, as well as Goodreads' Best Books of the Year, and Amazon's yearly Top 100 books. Emily Henry calls The Bodyguard “my perfect 10 of a book,” and Jodi Picoult says of Things You Save in a Fire, “Just read it, and thank me later.” Katherine lives in her hometown of Houston, Texas, with her husband, two almost-grown teenagers, and their fluffy-but-fierce dog.
What a Clever idea to have Cassie be the firefighter rescue Margaret from the small plane crash that left her in need of PT, in this short, short story!
And, to have her be the one, to make certain that Ian would be Physical Therapist to help Margaret through the next chapter of her life..(or is that Margaret helping Ian?)
Just a 32 minute Audible to bridge two of Katherine Center’s novels together- “Things You Save in the Fire” and “How to Walk Away”.
The author finds ways to have her characters make cameos in the other stories she has written, making it all feel like one hopeful World that they (we?) are all living in! 💕
Be Still My Heart! I had no idea what I was missing till I read this!
In “The Girl in the Plane” a short story by Katherine Center, we get a glimpse of our favorite characters from “How to Walk Away” and “Things You Save in a Fire.” Here, Katherine Center bridges the gap between both novels when a female FireFighter arrives at the scene of a plane crash where a woman is trapped inside. If you’ve read both of the aforementioned novels, you know these women to be Cassie and Margaret. In just a few endearing, heartwarming pages, my insides turned to mush and I was completely entranced.
Thank you to Katherine Center for this delightful short story!

Oh, wow! I had no idea that this connects to other Katherine Center books and am so excited to see what happens next for these characters. I have never been is gripped by such a short story... and by short, I mean a barely 40 minute audio.
Katherine Center is amazing, and I honestly have a lot to say as far as this goes.
Margaret, the girl in the plane, is hopeful, exuberant, and chatty. Not something Cassie, our firefighter, is used to on a call. In such a short amount of time, Center manages to build a world and I can't wait to continue in it. I love the way Cassie seemed to reflect Cassandra from greek mythology, and loved even more that Margaret is the reason Cassie even knows about that story.
In that alone, I was hoping for more. It's rare to see such chemistry in such a short amount of time, especially when you're only able to picture what people are doing, not see it.
This is a tiny masterpiece that introduces strength, curiosity, grief, and the hope that comes from realizing you're ready to move on from the hurt and forge a new life. Cassie brings two people that need each other together. Just like her namesake, those two people don't realize, or believe, how much they need each other.
I loved this. I can't wait to pick up the corresponding books.
From Maggie's airplane wreck in How to Walk Away to Cassie's career as a firefighter in Things You Save in a Fire. And oh yes - the Scottish Ian that they both know. Oo-la-la!
This part is so small yet so amazing. I want to thank Katherine center for writing it and narrating it in her own voice. This is a bridge between How to Walk Away and Things You Save in a Fire. ❤️😊
I loved this free little novella so much! It perfectly bridges How to Walk Away and Things You Save In a Fire together and I loved getting Cassie’s POV for those beginning moments of How to Walk Away. Wonderfully narrated by Katherine Center!
Omg...I gave Chip a pass for being a jerk but he stepped up to douche bag level. Over all I loved how this was written and connected favorite characters

This was a quick read (< 1 hour) that I've been meaning to get to since it came out. So interesting to hear about Margaret's situation in the plane from Cassie's perspective. I especially loved the audiobook narrated by the author!!
Did you know that the firefighter who saved Margaret's life in How to Walk Away was the same firefighter from Things You Save in a Fire? I loved both of those books and I'm looking forward to reading the first chapter of How to Walk Away (the plane crash rescue) from Cassie's (the firefighter) perspective.
I love when authors link books together with common characters, without making a series out of it. I also love when authors little short stories to go along with their full length novels. This is the perfect example. The Girl in the Plane introduces us to Cassie from Things You Save in a Fire (which was one of my top reads last year) and Margaret from How to Walk Away (which I desperately want to read now!). Both women are immediately likable and characters that you want to get to know better. Brilliant segue.
Re-read October 2023 - available with the How to Walk Away audiobook.

A short story that tells the story of Margaret (of How to Walk Away) as she is rescued from the plane wreck. It's told from Cassie's viewpoint, the fire fighter who rescues her and whom we formally meet in Things You Save in a Fire.
I just finished "How to Walk Away" last night and was on to the next book so I had to read the book that bridges them together. I cried when I found out the the firefighter who saved Maggie from the plane crash knew Ian. You have to read this. The was Katherine Center connected the two characters is so heartfelt like omg it tells you something amazing about the start of Ian and Maggie.
What an amazing tie in to both these books, and the experience of listening to Katherine read this and then reading it after was fabulous. I truly can't preach enough her writing style. I loved how the two books are related I was not expecting that. If you loved both please pick this up !
This is the beginning of How To Walk Away from the female firefighter's perspective after the plane crash. It was fun to hear how she played a role in the relationship forming between Ian and Margaret!
This was an interesting one to listen to, to see the other side of how things started. I liked that the crash didn't freak Margaret, glad that Cassie was able to help her in more than one way.
Nice little side character perspective from a story I loved (How to Walk Away) leading you into another phenomenal book (Things You Save in a Fire). I'm gonna love Cassie <3
