Love and hate don't matter when a wicked queen wants you dead.
When a stranger crashes into her life and lifts the concealment that has marred her face since childhood, Rosie Avalon leaves everything she knows behind. Pulled into a realm teeming with magical creatures, Rosie must navigate this new, broken world while avoiding capture by the evil queen, who knows there’s more to Rosie than meets the eye.
Bastien is an Untouchable, feared and shunned by all but a handful of elite warriors. His realm has been ravaged by the evil queen’s reign, but he will stop at nothing to save the land he loves, even if it means pushing Rosie past her breaking point.
Thrust into a quest that threatens to destroy her, Rosie’s path is clear: she must sacrifice all she holds dear to save a world on the brink of collapse.
This is books 1-3 in a 14-part fantasy romance series written by USA Today Bestselling Author Mary E. Twomey.
USA Today bestselling author Mary E. Twomey lives in Michigan with her three adorable children. She enjoys reading, writing, vegetarian cooking, and telling her children fantastic stories about wombats.
While she loves writing fantasy, dystopian, and paranormal tales for her readers, Mary also writes romance under the name Tuesday Embers.
This book is very difficult to rate. I’m not fond of the main characters. Rosie is very immature and I’m surprised she isn’t dead due to the numerous incidents of misfortune. She has absolutely no control or filter which makes her age difficult to believe. Her only good quality is her kindness and friendship. I love books with a love/hate relationship but Bastein and Rosie’s is unhealthy and I hate to feel that this is considered okay. Bastein is a jerk there is really not much to like. His actions are not justifiable and do not follow what he says or what we read he feels. I began wishing he would not be the love interest as this completely takes away from Rosie being a strong female character. The story is interesting which is why the book is hard to rate. I would love to know what happens but unless both Rosie and Bastein have a personality transplant I just don’t think I could manage another 11 books.
Rosie is immature. Bastion is bipolar. And the whole talking to animals thing was cool until the bear called her mom. Quit before I finished the first book. Wacky.
The storyline was good, but that was it. Even the title was misleading because she was ugly for about a second.
The dialogue was very trashy and nobody would actually talk like these characters would, in reality. It just spoils the flow of the story. Then you have a girl who spent her life as a hunchback with poor eyesight, being able to fight off trained warriors! In addition she barely bats an eyelid when someone is murdered. She also falls in love very quickly and has a very perverted relationship with her best male friend even sharing a bed with him?
The book's ideas are just all over the place, and don't work.
The thing that totally ruins this book is the repetitive "I !ove you..go away I hate you, but I love you. Kiss me, no don't kiss me why do you kiss me when I hate you so keep kissing me".
This is an interesting story if you scan thru the kissing and not kissing.
Cut all the stupidness and stick to the story of a young girl, her aunt and how she manages after finding out her true identity.
Mary E. Twomey's Faite Box Set 1 is a whirlwind of magic, sass, and otherworldly politics. This box set includes the first three books of the Faite series, and let me just say—once you fall into this twisted realm of royals, assassins, and bloodlines, there’s no crawling back to reality without a few battle scars and a lot of questions.
Twomey crafts a story where each chapter peels back a new layer of betrayal, humor, and heartbreak. The main character (whose sarcastic streak I fully endorse) is thrown into a brutal world of fae politics and royal entanglements with nothing but sheer grit and reluctant allies. The magic system is creative, the banter is top-tier, and the pacing is quick without feeling rushed.
What really sells it, though, is the emotional depth. These books aren’t just fairy wings and sparkling gowns—there are consequences, painful histories, and family secrets that keep the stakes high and the drama sharp. Some parts get dark, so check the content warnings if you’re sensitive to themes like violence, trauma, or emotional abuse.
Perfect for readers who like their fantasy with bite, backtalk, and just enough softness to make the hard parts hit harder.
I'm not a big fan of fantasy books, but the characters in this book made it a good read. Rosie, the main character has a heart of gold. She is full of love and yet feisty. Burdened with a hunched back, acne etc., she has had few friends in her life. Her aunt and substitute mother Lane, is also very loving and gives Rosie the support and encouragement she needs. Judah, her best friend since elementary school, accepts Rosie as she is and helps her with school work. Soon after Rosie goes through a sudden transformation, she is whisked away to Avalon, where she was born. Her help is needed to find the powerful, magical gems her birth mother, the Queen of Avalon, has stolen. It's the only way the other provinces of Avalon can once again flourish. Rosie has many adventures while on her quest and falls in love. I haven't read the last Parr of "Ugly Girl" yet so don't know whether Rosie finds all the gems, is able to change her evil mother, finds a way to release her father from a paralyzing spell or ends up with her love.
An interesting hidden World full of fantasy and some love.
These books came as a set of three. Books 1, 2 and three which really was needed to see just what was happening. It is very interesting how she was an ugly girl but she did excel in sports and the guys in her town thought of her as one of the guys.
She had a birth gift of being able to “talk” with all animals and birds which quite often the animals would protect her from those who would do her harm. She is taken against her will to the magical land of Avalon and her mother is the highest and meanest witch. He father the King sent Rosie with her Aunt Lane to “the common” but was found and returned to Avalon. The story is about her many trials and feelings of loss and love. I did enjoy these three books but even then it ended in another cliff hanger. Which made me remove a star because of the cliff hanger.
DNF @3% This book is for 12yos. I don't care that the MC is a 18yo already in college, this is still for 12yo girls who still hold the fantasy of turning up pretty "one day". It reads like a fairy tale.
Don't get me wrong, the writing is competent, the heroine is not obnoxious which was a surprise (at least, she wasn't in the few pages I read) and I found her friendship with Judah endearing. But this is just not for me. As a 35yo woman I'm past the age where appereances matter to me.
I could have read a whole book on how Rose found a way to be happy inspite her looks in a world so focus on outward apperances, how she found herself and her strenght and some success, and who knows, maybe even some love. Lords knows ugly girls get hot guys all the time. Instead, this is about how she was "pretty all along", flawless and perfect and a Disney princess no less.
I might come back to this if I'm ever in the mood for some modern fairy tale for kids, but for now, I'm dnf'ing
Loved the book bundle. Book 1 was about: A girl with a secret past embarks on a dangerous quest to save a magical realm from an evil queen, with the help of a feared warrior. Book 2 was about: In a broken realm, Rosie must prove herself, rescue her cousin, and survive assassination attempts while navigating unexpected alliances and betrayals. And book 3 was about: After Morgan le Fae locks her away in the castle, Rosie sees how very hard her life would've been if Lane hadn't stolen her away. With only her Compass as a tool, Rosie is determined to uncover the stolen Jewels of Good Fortune. She's desperate to give them back to the lands they belong to before it's too late.
I love Rosie! I understood what she was going through. I could relate. Wow nobody ever called me ugly I always felt like I was. I didn't like Kendrick when he did want he did. I was upset with Bastine when a lot In the three books I read in the series. I didn't like how no one was there when her mother taken and put in a hole. Someone was supposed to be close so that nothing happened. But I would continue to read the rest of the series if I had the money. I'm addicted. I need to know what happens. For good or bad.
I stumbled upon these books for free on Amazon I love trying new books. I went in blind not knowing what this would be about. I was very surprised and fell into the world immediately when I finished it I immediately bought the next in the series because I could not just leave it with that ending. Very very great series I'm excited to read more !
Oh wow, this book has such twists and turns that I feel like l am spinning. Just when you think you know what will possibly happen next it all changes. Rosie is a lovable character but very emotional sometimes. I cannot wait to see what is in store in the next part of the series.
Well that was a journey I must say and at the end just wow continue reading to find where this poor group ends up. Not a bad two day read I enjoyed parts and hated parts but in the end I will continue
I am heart broken, Rosie and Bastian rekindling, Demi being stolen by Rosie's aunt, and being thrown into the dark. I would have given up long before Rosie has, she's stronger then me.
I love it the highs and lows the fact that it's not just roses and unicorns but this can be the reality of the monsters we have in the world. It's great thanks for giving us your story..
Book one was great, book 2 had me wanting book 3 and now, now I need book 4! I have to know what happens to Rosie. Ms. Twomey, you have my full attention and I have NEVER said that about an author before.
Absolutely raw emotional truth. Moved me to tears multiple times! Expressed emotions with words in ways I have never been able to in my lifetime. This book has moved me in ways no other book has in many years.
Fun, interesting, fanciful. I got a little tired of the 22 year old speaking street language to everyone in every situation when her thoughts and asides to the reading audience were clearly more astute and educated. But I enjoyed the series overall.
I don't usually read fantasy books, but once I started this series. I could not put the books down. Every spare moment I had, I continued to read. Then, I decided to skip running the errands that needed done just so I could read some more!
Such a fun read. Villain’s, and Hero’s you’ll love to hate. Budding romance, and unrequited love mixed in with magic and fantasy keeps it interesting. A modern day fairy tail. Will love and integrity win out, or fall victim to greed and hate?
The writing was, to quote the book, "super way" juvenile. The story progression was wildly inconsistent with the main character continually entertaining a toxic relationship that makes no sense. Hopefully the later books from the author improve.
These books were amazing and left me not wanting to put it down. The endings always left me wanting more and then the sneak peek into the next book has me wanting more. I am absolutely obsessed with them!
