Obiteljska drama o tajnama iz prošlosti ispričana iz perspektive majke i kćerke koje žive vlastite životne puteve koji se spajaju u jedan, nadopunjuju i podupiru kao u pješčanom satu.
Koliko god me Norina (kćerkina priča iz sadašnjosti) nervirala i bila predvidiva, toliko sam uživala u priči Kloi, opisima Tenbija 50-tih godina i rađanju prijateljstva koje prerasta u ljubav.
Nesretna okolnost razdvaja dvoje koji se vole, ali ljubav pronalazi vlastiti put nakon 50 godina.
"Znam sve o simbolici peščanog sata; moć da ga obrnemo i krenemo sa novim početkom...
Ali za mene je uvek značio sponu između majke i kćerke. Uvek sam imala utisak da je jedna polovina stakla mama, a druga ja. I da smo povezane tim suštinskim spojem. A taj pesak je životna sila koja se presipa iz nje u mene, ali obrni ga i poteći će iz mene u nju - kad sam dobila tebe, shvatila sam da kćerka podupire majku isto koliko je i obrnuto."

If you are looking for a wonderful time slip story full of hope set in the beautiful setting of Tenby, then look no further! I have thoroughly enjoyed escaping into the world of Nora and Chloe set in the present and the 1950's!
In the present, Nora seems to have the weight of the world on her shoulders - working in a job that isn't making her happy, she's just split up with her partner and she's also in counselling to help deal with the anxiety she constantly feels. And then out of nowhere she gets an image of a seaside town stuck in her brain and the pull to Tenby is too much so she finds herself packing up her London life and taking the brave step to reconnect with the world and to find her way again to making herself happy.
In the 1950's, Chloe goes to Tenby every Summer to stay with her Aunt and her family and it is the highlight of her year! Everything seems so much more glamourous to her by the seaside and she soon meets her best friend, Llew, there and can think of nothing better than the big dance of the Summer.
As we follow both stories, they soon reveal that both Nora and Chloe fall quickly under Tenbys' spell and the people they meet have an immediate effect on their hopes and dreams for the future. With Nora she begins to regain her confidence and it is so lovely to see how she finds her feet and settles in so well. It also gives her time to reconnect with her grandmother who lives nearby and through her stories, she begins to learn more about her mother who seems reluctant to ever revisit Wales and seems to have spent her whole life avoiding the area and reluctant to ever commit to anything long term.
And with Chloe we see her transform from young teenage girl to a young woman with her yearly visits to the seaside - how her relationships change with members of her family and those she meets up with every Summer leading up to something that changes her outlook and attitude for her adult life.
Found this to be such an absorbing read as you really get a feel of each character with some wonderful writing, and beautifully described locations that just make you want to visit Tenby right away! As a young swimmer I remember one of our weekends away was spending time in Tenby for a gala meet, so it brought back some lovely memories for me and I could understand how Nora and Chloe fell for its' charm so quickly!
It is a story full of how you can reinvent yourself after setbacks in your life, and how just a different setting or different people around you can inspire you to move on and reassess events that have happened in your past. This is the first book by Tracy Rees that I've read and it definitely will not be the last!!

This is the third book I have read by Tracy Rees and I think it's her best one yet. I enjoyed Amy Snow and Florence Grace, but I loved this book. The author comes from Wales and you can feel her love of the places she describes and having been to Wales myself on numerous holidays as a child I could see the beautiful beaches and sand dunes in my mind of all those years ago as a little girl (although my time there as a child was much later lol)
The book is set in two times periods, the now and 1950's Tenby. The story is told through the perspectives of Chloe, the young girl who stays at her aunt Susan's every summer for three weeks a year and her fateful meeting with a local lad, Llew Jones. Llew is two years younger than the 10 year old Chloe but the age gap is incidental as he is a bit of an old soul. They have an instant connection and become firm friends. Reading their adventures and times together, their dreams and aspirations as the years slip by and childhood runs through their fingers. As they grow and change, so does how they see each other. It takes a terrible catalyst for Chloe to realise the nature and depth of her true feelings for Llew.
The other half of the book that is set in the present or at least 2015, tells the story of Nora. She has just come to a milestone in her life and turned 40. She has taken stock of her life and quit her job and gone off to Wales to sort herself out. She has links with the place, being half Welsh herself from her mother's side. There is a bit of mystery as to why her mother is so reluctant to talk about Wales or her times growing up there and over the years it has been a bit of a stumbling block between their mother/daughter relationship. After spending time in Tenby and making friends with a local woman a few years her junior, she decides to settle there for a few months before deciding what to do with her life. It is during this time that the past catches up with both mother and daughter and the mysteries of the past begin to unfold.
It is a story about second chances, no matter how long you have to wait for them and also at the heart of it is the complicated relationships that can be between mother and daughter. It has a bit of everything and was every bit a satisfying read.

Per visą gyvenimą gal tik kelias tokias knygas esu skaičiusi, kur abi istorijos buvo žiauriai geros. Lygiai tas pats ir su „Smėlio laikrodžiu“. Knyga padalinta į du laikus, ir vienas iš jų toks geras, toks įtraukiantis, o kitas visiškai neįdomus ir tik praverst puslapius norisi, kad prie pirmos istorijos galėčiau grįžt. Aišku, nepraleidinėjau, pabaigoj visai neblogai ten apsijungė viskas, bet esu tikra, kad palikus tik vieną istoriją ir ją išplėtus, būtų buvę tūkstantį kartų geriau...
1953 metais Klojai yra trylika metų. Jos šeima negyvena pasiturinčiai, tad tėvai kiekvieną vasarą, trims savaitėms mergaitę išsiunčia į pusseserių šeimą, Tenbio miestelį. Tačiau Kloja dėl to nė kiek neliūdi – atvirkščiai! tai mėgstamiausias jos laikas metuose! Tenbis – paplūdimio miestelis, kuriame gyvena geriausias jos draugas Liu. Jiedu dienų dienas leidžia prie jūros, svajoja, įsivaizduoja savo ateitį ir krečia išdaigas. Tačiau su kiekvienais metais Kloja vis labiau bręsta, ima su pusseserėmis vaikščioti į šokius, rūpintis savo išvaizda ir galvoti apie berniukus. Liu už ją jaunesnis ir ne visada jų norai sutampa, tad tokia stipri draugystė ima braškėti. O atsitikus didžiulei nelaimei, viskas dar labiau apverčia Klojos gyvenimą.
2014 metai. Norai keturiasdešimt, ji lankosi pas psichologą, palieka savo draugą, ir meta saugų, ramų darbą. Ji nori iš naujo pajausti gyvenimą ir išnuomavusi savo butą pabėga į Tenbį. Ten, susipažinusi su keliais žmonėmis ir aplankiusi senelę randa netikėtų sąsajų. Jai pamažu ima aiškėti, kodėl jos mama taip nenorėjo, kad jį vyktų į šį miestelį...
Tai va, pirma istorija fantastiška. Antra nuobodi. O iš esmės, tai toks lengvas, ganėtinai banalus romanas apie šeimos paslaptis ir vieno iš vaikaičių kapstymą jose. Daug tokių knygų yra, ir ši tikrai neišskirtinė. Kas labai smagu, kad knygos gale yra mini, bet smagus interviu su autore ir knygoje minėtų pyragaičių receptas. Tokios smulkmenėlės mane visad nudžiugina.

Tracy Rees has been dubbed ‘The most outstanding new voice in historical fiction’. While I would love to agree with author Lucinda Reilly on this one, I can’t. I really enjoyed Rees’s first book Amy Snow but The Hourglass fell short of the mark. Initially I was drawn to the beautiful front cover of a woman standing on the beach holding a bouquet of flowers, wearing a vivid red dress. I wandered how an hourglass would be interwoven. When I saw the author, it quickly became a must buy. The dual storyline with alternating chapters between the past and present also drew me in as this is one of my favourite writing techniques. Set in both 1950 and 2014, I found myself favouring the 2014 plot. This is highly unusual for me because I adore historical fiction. However, 1950s Chloe in Tenby bored me. Chloe is the main character of 11 years old who visits Tenby once a year, staying with family. While I got to see Chloe grow a little older each summer, nothing really happened. She’s like every other teenager who wanted to hang out with the cool kids and has a major crush on the wrong boy. This was a huge letdown as the blurb promised that the ‘aftermath of a date would haunt her forever’. Disappointingly I predicted what would happen and it did, three quarters of the way through. It felt a little too late and too rushed at this point. 2014 Tenby was much more fascinating as the story arc followed 40-year-old Nora dealing with her relationships issues, mainly her ex boyfriend and parents. I could relate to Nora coming up to the big 4-0 myself but more importantly, events happened to her. Of course, there’s always a connection with two characters in a dual narrative which I though Rees kept well hidden. At over 500 pages, I thought more should have happened to Chloe or Nora’s life should have been the main focus. As for that hourglass, well I won’t give the significance away but it was flimsy at best.

I loved, absolutely adored Amy Snow by this author. So, I was excited about this new book. Unfortunately it's not grabbing me. I made it to page 128 and it's ok, but I'm just bored. So, I'm setting it aside. I will still try Florence Grace which is her other title I haven't read.

Jako lijepa priča, zapravo kao što to u romanima ove vrste obično biva, priče, jedna u prošlosti i jedna u sadašnjosti koje su naravno isprepletene i povezane. Romanom je odlično dočarana atmosfera malog velškog gradića na obali, stoga je i roman idealan za čitanje upravo na odmoru kao što sam ga i ja čitala. Životne priče dvaju junakinja dosta dobro drže pažnju i pored određenih zamjerki zbog nekih naivnosti u događanjima, sve vodi ka efektnoj završnici, pa stoga od mene ovom romanu ide ocjena 4,5 i preporuka za ljubitelje(ice) emotivnih ljubavnih priča.

It was good but hard to get into a bit. Nora's parts were kinda boring to me and I just didn't connect to the characters at all. But I liked Chloe's parts. I would've enjoyed it more if the whole book was from her POV.

Do you like contemporary fiction and historical fiction? Well if so, you are in for a treat with The Hourglass by Tracy Rees, as it mixes both together flawlessly.
The Assets of The Hourglass by Tracy Rees:
2 Fascinating Points of View : Chloe, a teenager in the 1950s who lives for her summer holidays in Wales every year. And Nora, who turned 40 in 2014, and is realising that she hates her life and is ready to change everything up. I loved both voices equally and happily flip-flopped between their story arcs.
1950s Wales setting: OMG, this setting was fabulous. Think innocent times, days spent exploring, beach day after beach day, picnics, the excitement of your first teenage dance, freedom and ice cream. I wanted to time-travel and be Chloe!
The symbolism: I loved the hourglass symbolism. Both Chloe and Nora are at turning points in their lives and the image of an hourglass captured that so well. It’s also important for other reasons, and I appreciated how well that all fitted together.
Warmth: The book radiates warmth. The characters are lively, and I loved the friendships and romances.
Emotional Plot: Such a poignant plot, it made my heart beat faster with all the feels. I 100% fell in love with all the characters and feels were spilling over.
The Liabilities of The Hourglass by Tracy Rees:
I’m racking my brain, because I like to nit-pick! But I can’t find anything I hated. It takes a little bit of time to fit everything together, but that’s part of the charm of the read. So nothing!
Investment potential of The Hourglass by Tracy Rees:
If you like the sound of a contemporary/recent historical fiction mash-up and a heartfelt plot, then yes definitely you should read this. If you are a fan of authors like Kate Morton, or Julia Crouch, then you might also like this one.

Pernai skaičiau šios autorės „Eimę Snou“ ir labai pamilau rašytojos stilių bei sugebėjimą kurti gražią istoriją. Todėl pamatęs, kad netrukus pasirodys kita šios autorės knyga- spirgėjau iš nekantrumo kuo greičiau ją gauti ir perskaityti. O kaip tik buvo mano gimtadienis ir gavau dovanų pinigų, už kuriuos man išėjo šita knyga. Tad greitai pabaigęs pradėtą knygą- griebiausi šitos.
Iš pradžių man istorija atrodė kiek.. neturinti prasmės ir nesirišanti, bet pasiekus kažkur 130 puslapį- viskas ėmė stotis į vėžias ir galutinai mane įtraukė, nes žinojau istorijoje slypinčią paslaptį... tik nenumaniau kokia ji. O jei negali nuspėti knygos siužeto- tuomet knyga yra tikrai verta skaityti. Tad kiekvieną dieną laukiau kada baigsiu darbą ir grįžtant namo autobuse galėsiu tą pusvalandį skirti keliems puslapiams. Na, o kai atėjo mano trys išeiginės- kibau į ją visom išgalėm, nes negalėjau taip paprastai jos padėti į šoną ir eiti miegoti. Kuo toliau tuo viskas ėmė dėliotis į savo vietas ir įgavo prasmę. Visgi- tai ne „Eimė Snou“, bet rašytoja savo stilių puikiai išlaikė.
Jeigu reiktų šitą knygą apibūdinti tik vienu žodžiu, tai būtų- JAUTRU. Tikrai LABAI jautri šeimos istorija. Paskutiniuose puslapiuose plūdau ašaromis, nes nebemačiau veikėjų, o mačiau save ir... vieną ypatingą asmenį, su kuriuo smagiai leidom laiką taip pat kaip Kloja su Liu. Todėl dabar sėdžiu, užvertęs knygą, ir galvoju: gal ir man atėjo laikas kaip Norai važiuoti į tą miestą, kurį kasnakt regiu savo sapnuose..? Štai kokių minčių man sukėlė šita knyga: jeigu jauti, kad turi kažką padaryti- privalai tai padaryti, nes tik taip pat rasi savo laimę.
APIBENDRINIMAS: jautru, romantiška, tobula knyga vėsiam ir lietingam vasaros vakarui namuose ar pajūryje.

Na, o kai atėjo mano trys išeiginės- kibau į ją visom išgalėm, nes negalėjau taip paprastai jos padėti į šoną ir eiti miegoti. Kuo toliau tuo viskas ėmė dėliotis į savo vietas ir įgavo prasmę. Visgi- tai ne „Eimė Snou“, bet rašytoja savo stilių puikiai išlaikė.
Jeigu reiktų šitą knygą apibūdinti tik vienu žodžiu, tai būtų- JAUTRU. Tikrai LABAI jautri šeimos istorija. Paskutiniuose puslapiuose plūdau ašaromis, nes nebemačiau veikėjų, o mačiau save ir... vieną ypatingą asmenį, su kuriuo smagiai leidom laiką taip pat kaip Kloja su Liu. Todėl dabar sėdžiu, užvertęs knygą, ir galvoju: gal ir man atėjo laikas kaip Norai važiuoti į tą miestą, kurį kasnakt regiu savo sapnuose..? Štai kokių minčių man sukėlė šita knyga: jeigu jauti, kad turi kažką padaryti- privalai tai padaryti, nes tik taip pat rasi savo laimę.
APIBENDRINIMAS: jautru, romantiška, tobula knyga vėsiam ir lietingam vasaros vakarui namuose ar pajūryje.

Genoten van dit boek waarin twee verhaallijnen op een mooie manier met elkaar verweven zijn. Het ene speelt zich af in de jaren ’50, het andere in 2015.

I really enjoyed the story and the further we got the more I was hooked. But I do still think that the book didn't need to be as long as it was. Yes, everything kind of added something to the story, but I'm not sure if we needed 5 summers that Chloe spend in Tenby as a teen to be explained in varying detail for example. I think you could've definitely reduced that and made it more compact.
I was almost 200 pages in and still felt like the story was in the very very very beginning - nothing big had really happened yet.
Nonetheless I did fully enjoy the story as I've been to Tenby multiple times and it does hold a special place in my heart. Even before I read this book.

„Smėlio laikrodis“ pasakoja dvi istorijų linijas, glaudžiai susijusias tarpusavyje. Viena iš jų pažindina mus su Nora, iš pažiūros normalia ir sėkminga moterimi. Tačiau jos gyvenimas iš tiesų nėra toks ramus ir patrauklus, kaip atrodo. Išsiskyrimas su antrąją puse bei puikia darbo vieta ne juokais sukrutina jos kasdienybės bokštą. Norą kamuojantys nerimo priepuoliai ir persekiojantys košmarai nenori trauktis, tad siekdama pabėgti nuo nemalonių potyrių ji paatostogauti išvyksta į Tenbį. Kas žino, ką šis miestelis yra paruošęs moteriai ir kur ją nublokš svaiginančio paplūdimio bangos.

Tikriausiai būtent todėl itin pamilau tą moterį. Jos jausmai, mintys, santykiai su šeima, noras pabėgti... Visa tai buvo taip šalia mano sielos, jog nesinorėjo padėti knygos. Rodės, kad skaitydama ne tik nutraukiu Noros juntamą vienišumo jausmą, bet ir nutraukiu savąjį. Į veikėją žvelgiau kone kaip į geriausią draugę. O Klojė, tokia naivi ir miela, vaikystėje priminė man mane. Beverčiant puslapius ir jai beaugant radau vis daugiau panašumų ir žavėjausi jos ir Liu draugyste. Abi pagrindinės knygos veikėjos man kėlė teigiamus, malonius, nostalgiškus jausmus.
Tracy Rees rašymo stilius man pasirodė puikus. Jai sekėsi perteikti nerimo būseną, minčių kankynę, slėgusią Norą, o Klojė ir jos vėjavaikiškumas mane nukėlė į pačios vaikystės metus. Kaip ir sakiau, knyga manyje sužadino ne tik jausmų virtinę, bet ir sukėlė pamokančių, giliai įstrigusių minčių. Noros gyvenimo pasikeitimai, spontaniškumas ir didžiausio gėrio atradimas tvirtino, jog kartais, pasikliovus širdies balsu, viskas susiklosto dar geriau ir palankiau nei vadovaujantis protu. Tiesa, kad ir kaip mane kankintų augantis noras mesti viską ir persikraustyti į tylų kampelį, pradėti naują, mane tenkinantį gyvenimą, to KOL KAS padaryti pilnai negaliu ir turiu pasikliauti protu, tad išgyvensiu šiuos pokyčius mintyse ir džiaugsiuosi Noros atgimimu bei paslaptingomis ir posūkių pilnomis Klojos dienomis. O besvajodama glausiu knygą prie širdies, mat ji tokia šilta ir graži, jog galėtų ištirpdyti net šalčiausią širdį ir, žinoma, tvirčiausią sniegą. Stipri rekomendacija iš manęs.

This book was very interesting and I liked it a lot. The story is about two women, Nora and Chloe, the first girl exists in contemporary time, the second, Chloe is a girl who grows up in the 1950s and 60s. Both stories follow life in Tenby, Wales as it is now and as it was then. Dissatified with life, Nora gives up her well paid job in London on a whim as she is suddenly drawn to a place she knew in childhood where she was once happy. The peace she is looking for begins to be tangible in her present doings, while Chloe visits her extended family there as a child growing into an adult. Nora and Chloe are tied into a secret and the latter's story of her happy childhood days and the eventual tragedy that befalls her the reader cannot discover until the end of the story. The novel tells both girls' stories with feeling and compassion and the author's ability to hide the secrets of both women's lives is finally unravelled in straightforward, picturesque writing describing a place that both of her characters remember well The writing is never confusing and the reader is sucked into two lives which can be followed separately until they merge into their surprising conclusion. However the very beginning of the book is now forgotten when an old woman prays for her girls to come home, a foreword that is easily passed over and again only makes sense in the final pages. The only reason I didn't give the novel five stars was because I find the device of changing from one character to another and having to follow their different stories a little bit annoying. However, I can see why the author was doing this about half way through and I think it was quite clever and was handled more skilfully as it drew to its final chapters. The prose was very good indeed and the descriptions were unusual in some places and lovely in others. I think that The Hourglass would be a very good read for anyone, who has the patience to persevere with reading two stories together.

Semesterortsfeelgood. Oväntat trevligt! Även oväntat realistiskt. Uppfriskande att huvudpersonens nya liv inte bygger på att hon ska starta nån jävla entreprenörsverksamhet (hon anmäler sig till en vikariepool för receptionister).
Fyrtioårskrisande kvinna säger upp sig från sitt jobb som receptionist på högskola, efter att ha sett framför sig en vacker strand hon var på nån gång som barn. Innan dess har hon även gjort slut med sin sjukt tråkiga kille + börjat gå i terapi pga ångest + fått trasslig relation till sin mamma (som hon annars har en stört nära relation med). Mamman tycker att hon är dum och hon tror att det är för sent att börja om. Men! Hon bestämmer sig för att resa till den där stranden, träffar en ny kompis som hon hyr ett tjusigt hus med + hänger med sin mormor som bor i närheten + blir kär i en kille från Nya Zeeland.
Parallellt följer man hennes mamma som barn, när hon var på samma semesterort hos en moster på somrarna. Hon var bästis med Lew som ville bli fotograf och var två år yngre. De var oskiljaktiga varje sommar men hon fattade inte att han var kär i henne förrän en dag när hon var på dejt med en äldre snygging. Samma kväll är hon på väg att bli våldtagen men räddas av Lew, som samtidigt får en sten i huvudet i ett jordskred och blir förlamad. Sen vägrade han vara kompis med henne mer.
Visar sig att den konstnär som dottern och hennes kompis hyr hus av är Lew. Han var bara förlamad ett tag men gifte sig med nån annan och ångrade sig sen, har målat en massa tavlor utifrån fotona han tog som barn. Dottern upptäcker detta och sammanför dem. Slutar med att de gifter sig. Dottern bor kvar i semesterorten och funderar vidare på vad hon ska göra härnäst.

I received an electronic copy of this book for free from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review. I have never read any of Tracy Rees' books before so I was very excited when Net Galley approved this book for me to read and review. This was definitely a long book but it held my attention throughout the entire book. The cover is beautiful and what drew me to the book but I was delighted to find the contents were just as good, if not better than the cover. I can't wait to go back and read more by Tracy Rees!

Šios autorės knygą "Eimė Snou" atsimenu iki šiol. Ji buvo kaip gaivus oro gurkšnis!! Suskaičiau per keletą dienų :) Vos tik pasirodė ši knyga, labai norėjau perskaityti 😉 tad, kai radau bibliotekoje, ėmiau negalvodama :)
1950 m. Klojė jauna, labai graži ir paprasta mergaitė, kuri kiekvieną vasarą per atostogas su nekantrumu keliauja pas savo tetą į Tenbį. Jos ten laukia mylintys giminaičiai ir geriausias draugas Leo. Ten ji praleidžia gražiausius jaunystės metus.
2014 m. Nora jauna, graži ir paprasta mergina, kuri stengiasi kardinaliai pakeisti savo gyvenimą: išeina iš nemylimo darbo, išsiskiria su tiesiog patogiu vaikinu ir bando susitvarkyti su savo baimėmis likti vienai. Ji suvokia, kad dvasios ramybę atgauti gali tik nuvykusi į Tenbį ir susivokusi, ko tiksliai nori iš gyvenimo. Ji net pati nesupranta, kad Tenbis tampa jei labai ypatinga vieta.
Knygoje smarkiai paliečiamos savęs atradimo ir suvokimo, kas tu esi, temos. Mamos ir dukros santykiai - šios knygos ašis. Viso pasakojimo metu matome, koks glaudus ryšys sieja jas, nors dėl praeities paslapčių jos to ryšio vos nepraranda. Draugystės stebuklo puoselėjimas, vaikų virsmas jaunuoliais ir nauji neatrasti bei labai dauginantis jausmai. Ir žinoma duoklė amžinai ir tikrai meilei, kuri gali išlaukti :)😉

I have only visited Tenby once. My late Grandad loved the place and his sister had a little place there. He used to take photos and turn into slides for a projector. I found them recently whilst sorting out my old family home. Plus waiting years in the hope a lost love can be given a second chance this book resonated on so many levels. Whilst it was a long read and a slow burn in parts I absolutely loved it. It made me miss my own late Mum more, and my whole family and it made me cry yet it give me a glimmer of hope for that lost love... and a need to visit Tenby once more. Lovely lovely story.

Loved this book from start to finish. I like a book with places I know, I live in Kingston and although I am from Wales I have never been to Tenby. This will have to be remedied (although hubby left a chunk of his leg on the rocks at Tenby so I might have to do a ‘Nora’ and go on my own!). Highly recommended read.

Definitely a fun “beach read”. I definitely recommend. It is sweet with a mystery and lovely ending. I must try making Welsh cakes now.

Jaukus, niekuo neišsiskiriantis iš kitų meilės romanų skaitinukas:) patiko gražūs gamtos aprašymai, jūros vaizdai... smėlis... tačiau pati knyga skaitėsi gan nuobodžiai, tarsi neišbaigta... aprašytos veikėjos leidžiamos vasaros vis tokios pačios, veiksmo mažai... 🌟🌟🌟 :)
