I gave this trio of book 3 stars as it wasn't my usual type of book. I normally like to read detective novels that are about the murders, the detectives and how the ups and downs of the case and the team all come together, and I enjoy learning about the characters through the different cases. Ruby Baker is no police detective, she is a normal Hairdresser who has ran away from her life in Croyden with her best friend Mary and gone to Brighton. They get jobs in a Hairdressers and live in a small flat above the salon. Ruby becomes a private investigater in her spare time. I won't give any more away but I after a slow and slightly confusing start, I did enjoy reading all three books and will read the next when it comes out. So if you enjoy something a little different give them a go..
I read all three of these books before they were put into this collection and I thoroughly enjoyed all three of them. Ruby and her best friend Mary leave London to get away from Mary's violent husband, but not before Ruby has given him a taste of his own medicine. She then worries that someone will put two and two together and come after her. They reach Brighton and manage to get jobs in a hairdresser's shop, whose owner is prepared to give them a chance. They enjoy the social life in Brighton but then murdered bodies turn up and the police don't seem to be making any headway in their investigation. Ruby begins to ask questions and, as she is an intelligent girl, she makes sense of all the clues and finds the killer. (Not giving anything away here - you need to read the books!) As well as the enjoyment of trying to solve a good puzzle, the reader also gets a wonderful helping of nostalgia, reading about Brighton in the 1960's. I found all these books to be incredibly good reads and I am waiting for more. Ruby must carry on!
Slow to start with, but by the time I had finished the first book I was hooked. It was good reading about one of my favourite seaside resorts as it use to be.
If life was like this now it would be so great. To go back to a time were there really wasn't any technology as such. Life seems to be so much better!
