Mighty Min

Her early years were spent drawing and climbing trees, and now she spends most of her time drawing while in her pajamas and daydreaming about climbing trees. She has illustrated many acclaimed picture books including The Balcony, If I Had a Little Dream, and Yellow Kayak. She lives in Cambridge, England.

Min is a tiny person who lives with her tiny aunts. Each night they tell stories of their brave adventures and Min feels she doesn't have a brave story of her own to tell, that is until one night the small creatures in the garden need her help with a fearful monster.
The illustrations are absolutely wonderful! Castrillon has a beautiful style, William Morris meets Kathleen Hale. The illustrations are worth reading this for alone, very beautiful and inventive too, lots of different perspectives and little details to look at. A very nice bedtime story and an absolute joy to look through.

Melissa Castrillon proves the best things come in small packages with the utterly exquisite Mighty Min. Every page perfectly crafted, divine colour palette, and a story which gleams every bit as brightly as the illustrations in a tale described as ‘a feminist Thumbelina’. Loved it!

To bardzo prosta historia o małych-wielkich, ale całkowicie mnie zauroczyła. Piękne ilustracje, czuły humor, wciągająca fabuła i oooogrooomm ciepła.

Milli on ihan onnistunut kuvakirja rohkeudesta ja toisten auttamisesta ilman saarnaamista. Kuvitus tuo mieleen vanhojen venäläisten klassikoiden tyylin. Ihan mukavan omaperäinen visuaalinen ilme kyllä.

Absolutely beautiful illustrations and a sweet story... Sometimes all it takes to be "mighty" is to show up and keep doing the next right thing, putting aside the fear that you or what you can accomplish are too small.

Denk aan een combinatie van het werk van Hayao Miyazaki, het sprookje van Duimelijntje en een beetje Alice in Wonderland. Wat krijg je dan? Machtige Min van Melissa Castrillon, één van de mooiste prentenboeken in mijn kast!
In een bijzonder kleurenpalet van rood, paars en groen tinten leren we de kleine Min kennen. Samen met haar tantes woont Mini helemaal achterin de tuin, waar ze elkaar elke avond rond een warm vuur verhalen vertellen. Min is alleen een beetje verdrietig, want zij heeft ngeen bijzonder verhaal om te vertellen. Maar dat zal deze nacht veranderen, als Mini wordt opgepikt door een grote uil...
“Er zit een monster in de tuin,’
zegt de uil, ’en dat zorgt voor allemaal chaos.
De dieren weten zich geen raad. Wil jij ze helpen?
Min hapt naar adem.
‘Ik ben niet zo heel machtig,’ zegt ze.
‘Maar ik zal mijn best doen.’”
Een bijzonder mooi en warm prentenboek over je waarde leren kennen. Iedereen is machtig, op een compleet eigen manier.

Przeurocza i mądra historia małej Min mieszkającej z odważnymi cioteczkami. Dziewczynka boi się, że nigdy nie dorówna ciotkom i nie przeżyje swojej przygody życia. Czy jednak tak właśnie będzie?
Ilustracje są świetne. Bardzo charakterystyczna kreska i przyjemne dla oka kolory.

Melissa Castrillón became one of my favourite authors in the span of one day. The art!! Y'all, the art!! So beautiful. I could look at these pages for the rest of my life.

I adore Melissa Castrillon’s other children’s books with Nina Laden and was excited to hear she’d written a book of her own. This book did not disappoint and is an absolute feast for the eyes. The colours and patterns are detailed and gorgeous and work well with the story.
The story itself is a modern day feminist style Thumbelina, with mighty Min going on an adventure like those of her brave aunts. I love the display of a different all female family dynamic, that’s loving but bold and protective. Min is a great little character who manages to see the inner softie in the frightening cat that has been terrorising the other creatures. It’s is great that Min is brave and fights with kindness.
Overall I can thoroughly recommend this gorgeous book.

Sopivasti joukosta erottuva kuvakirja millin mittaisesta tytöstä ja tämän seikkailuista puutarhassa. Paljon pieniä yksityiskohtia. Luulin ensin, että tämä olisi ranskalaista kuvakirjaa, mutta ilmeisesti alkuperäisteos on Englannista.

Kerrassaan ihastuttava kirja rohkeudesta ja ystävien auttamisesta! Milli on pienen pieni tyttö, joka asuu neljän rohkean tätinsä kanssa puutarhan keskellä. Eräänä yönä Milli päättää lähteä seikkailemaan ja päätyy auttamaan puutarhan eläimiä.

Een pracht van een prentenboek!
Machtige Min gaat over een klein meisje dat met haar 4 tantes in een tuinhuisje woont. De tantes hebben altijd wonderlijke en avontuurlijke verhalen te vertellen en Min wil ook zo graag haar eigen avontuur beleven. Maar... kan dat wel? Is Min daar niet veel te klein voor? En bovendien is ze ook niet zo machtig als haar tantes...
Ten eerste vielen mij de prachtige illustraties op. Het kleurgebruik, de inrichting van de pagina's, de creatieve manieren om de tekst weer te geven binnenin een vleugel van een witte uil... Dit is één van mijn favoriete nieuwe illustrators van prentenboeken!
Daarnaast was het verhaal ook prachtig. Een avontuurlijk boek vol met dieren en prachtige natuur dat veel kinderen zal aanspreken. Maar bovenal de prachtige boodschap die het boek brengt: iedereen kan avonturen beleven en anderen helpen. Ook al denk je dat je niet zo sterk, slim... bent als anderen, je hebt wel degelijk iets te bieden aan de wereld. Elk kind heeft zijn eigen unieke talenten en vaardigheden die het kan inzetten om dromen te realiseren en een mooie bijdrage te leveren aan de wereld. Als kinderpsycholoog zie ik dan ook direct mogelijkheden om met dit prentenboek te werken met kinderen aan talent, mindset, zelfvertrouwen...
Een absolute aanrader, die ik later zeker wil gebruiken in mijn praktijk!

"Lo bueno viene en envase pequeño."
La verdad es que compré el libro por puro placer visual y no me decepcionó. Es exquisito en sus detalles y precioso en su narrativa. Me transmitió mucho frescor y ternura, y tengo muchísimas ganas de ver más ilustraciones de Castrillón. Me hago fan.
Min es una pequeña niña, minúscula, que vive con sus tías en un bosque. Ellas siempre tienen aventuras que contar...pero Min no tiene ninguna. Sin embargo, una noche llega su turno de demostrar su valor, ¿podrá hacerlo?
El viaje que nos regala la autora, sobre encontrar tus propias fortalezas, aupada en las que tu entorno te transmitió en algún momento, para luego ser reconocido por ellas, es importantísimo. Este es un libro que debería aguardar en la mesita de noche de cada niña y niño. Nos permite aventurarnos y salvar obstáculos, siendo fieles a nosotros mismos.
Particularmente, me hubiese gustado ver un poquito más de líos para entretenerme con la forma en que Min los sobrellevaría, pero al ser un libro para manitos pequeñas, me conformo con esta narrativa, que luego te invita a hacer la tuya propia.
:) Por más "Min's sin miedos", siempre.

My daughter loves Min with all her heart. We read this story ten times already and it looks like there will be only more and more of "mommy, let's read tiny Min!".
Book has beautiful illustrations and the story is so fun to read for a 5 year old.

Een best toffe prentenboek, ik moet zeggen dat al was het verhaal leuk... ik voornamelijk bleef lezen vanwege de absoluut prachtige illustraties. Zoveel mooie details. Zoveel moois om ansich naar te kijken.
