Sightseeing, gay bars...and if I'm lucky, maybe a couple of random hookups. That's the extent of my plans when I sign up for a European vacay with my buddies. I've never heard of this Parlaisa country--but hey--a cheap flight and two-star hotel are perfect for a poor college kid, right? And the trip turns out to be even better than I could have possibly imagined when I end up in a bar with some sexy masked guy's tongue down my throat.
And damn...what a tongue.
Even with his face partially obscured, Sexy Masked Guy can't hide those hypnotic steel blue eyes, his chiseled jawline, or the gun show he's working with under that tight T-shirt. But after our kiss, he proves to be nothing more than a cocky, dismissive a-hole. As if that isn't bad enough, flash forward--after one hell of a misunderstanding, I'm arrested by the Parlaisan royal guard and taken to a dungeon, where I learn that Sexy Masked Guy is actually Sexy Prince.
Prince Owen Hawthorne III.
Yes, I was kissing the Prince of Parlaisa!
Even worse, pics of us kissing are posted on the notorious Prince Watch blog. Prince Owen III has been unmasked by the paps, and we've both been outed. And here I had been planning to finally tell my family about my inclinations towards rainbows, glitter, and c*ck as soon as I got back home to Fever Falls.
Seems like my vacation can't get any wackier, but now Prince Owen needs a favor--a fake relationship favor. All I have to do is pretend to be his boyfriend for a good cause and some cash that I could really use right about now. But do I really want to team up with a guy who's been nothing but a prick to me in the short time that I've known him?
Of course, before I know it, I'm in too deep. Fortunately, Owen's strict 'no messing around' rule will keep this from getting out of control.
Even though I can't stop thinking about how he knew exactly what he was doing with his tongue.
Even though he loves watching me prance around in my underwear.
Even though he can't get enough of me on my knees, doing what I do best.
Dammit--did we already screw this up?
Talk about a #RoyalProblem.
#ROYAL is part of the Fever Falls series but can be read and enjoyed as a standalone.
Devon McCormack grew up in the Georgia suburbs with his two younger brothers and an older sister. At a very young age, he spun tales the old fashioned way, lying to anyone and everyone he encountered. He claimed he was an orphan. He claimed to be a king from another planet. He claimed to have supernatural powers. He has since harnessed this penchant for tall tales by crafting worlds and characters that allow him to live out whatever fantasy he chooses. Devon is an out and proud queer man living in Atlanta, Georgia.
Devon's body of work ranges from erotica to young adult, so readers should check the synopses of his books before purchasing so that they know what they're getting into.
This started out as a solid 3⭐️⭐️⭐️ read. I took it at face value and I got what I expected from this writer: -Just OK writing -Wade-in deep characters -OTT and hard to believe plot -Somewhat cheesy dialogue
I was fine with it. I was enjoying it—not loving it. But then I just couldn’t keep buying the drivel being shoveled down my throat (and not in a fun way)!
This fake boyfriend story is my LEAST favorite of any I’ve ever read. (And it’s one of my favorite tropes!) The set-up was hard to buy, I mean there are dungeons involved! Literal dungeons and not the bdsm kind!! Paparazzi. A prince. A 32 year old prince falling for a 19 year old American when he’s never fallen before for a man. Weird rules for their relationship that go out the window and soon land the pair into love-land forever. It was just weird.
The dialogue got so, so, so politically correct in bed—so understanding—long dialogues, internal and external about it needing to be right! Gah! It was just all so freaking polite in bed that it got on my nerves and made me rush through sex scenes—god forbid!
One thing I liked: manties.
So, take my review with a grain of salt and know that this is not my favorite author (when he writes alone). Also know that this bi-for-you/fake boyfriend trope has been done way better by other writers in the MM genre.
WOW, this Author's book four was absolutely amazing and I loved it! Definitely a must read, lots fun and laughter, excitement, drama, sexy characters, secrets reviled and then some! This a beautiful love story, from the beginning to end! So many thanks, Honey Bee
This is the story of a closeted bisexual, European prince, falling for his much younger, American born and bred, fake-boyfriend.
I liked Keegan a lot, but Prince Owen annoyed me to no end. His opening scene, highlighting an unnecessary M/F/M threesome, turned me off his character immediately and it was an upward battle from there to win me over. There were moments I thought I was coming around, but his sooky bullshit near the end cinched things for me — especially when Keegan had to be the mature adult who fixed everything, seemingly allowing Owen to get away with his relationship blunder without any necessary grovelling.
Then there was the age gap. Age differences don’t really bother me anymore — how could they when 70% of M/M stories written these days seem to have a focus on them — but, for some reason, Keegan’s nineteen years vs Owen’s thirty-something age did present an issue for me here. Maybe if Keegan was a couple years older or if Owen was a few years younger I’d believe their connection, but past the whole “you’re hot/no you are!” vibes, I couldn’t really understand what deeper attraction these two had that would make them want to be together.
I guess I simply didn’t buy their relationship, to the point that, even though they got a solid HFN at the end, I just couldn’t imagine these two working out long-term, and that’s beside the facts that one’s a royal and they live in countries on opposite sides of the world, let alone their age difference.
Man, this review is looking very bleak, isn’t it?! But rest assured I still like this series in general. It was great to be back in Fever Falls, even if it wasn’t as much as I would have liked, and it was nice to see all the series regulars make little appearances here and there. Plus, Devon McCormack knows how to navigate a raunchy sex scene, so I’ll always be dishing out points for the steaminess.
In truth, my favourite moments in this book revolved around the little teasing scenes featuring Keegan’s best friends, Steve and Casey. Although Steve is apparently straight at this point, they were both giving off some seriously heated vibes and I was completely riveted whenever they were on page. I think I’ll be pretty disgruntled if McCormack doesn’t follow up with a story about these two, seeing as the will they/won’t they vibes were too strong not to be leading somewhere. Right!?! *looks around frantically*
Now, back to the love lives of "the Saturgays" — the stories I can’t help but like best!
First of all, although this book is the 4th in the series, this book can perfectly standalone. I have no problem at all following the story line and characters of the story. 😁
Keegan is a young, innocent college guy who was on a vacation on a tiny island nation (fictional) in Europe. He’s thinking about coming out of the closet and enjoying the freedom of being out and proud on his vacation. And while he was in a bar with his friends, he met the most handsome and seductive man he’s ever met in his life. That was the hottest kiss he’s ever shared and he thought he’s the luckiest guy on this planet. And everything went south so quickly. Suddenly he was being tased, arrested and being thrown into a cold, damp dungeon. And the man he shared a passionate and scorching kiss with? It was Prince Owen Hawthorne III of Palaisa. Is it a Disney fairytale or a Grim brothers edition one for Keegan?
This book is cute and charming with some amount of angst. The relationship between Keegan and Owen started out as a convenient arrangement but blossomed into something much more shortly. I loved the sexy times between Keegan and Owen. And GFY is a bonus. 😁 I was frustrated with Owen at some chapters for how he acted towards Keegan. I mean the man can be such a spoiled brat sometimes. But it ended well because I loved the ending for those two. I usually love Michel Pauley to death but I have some issues with his performance in this one. First, I didn’t like his voice for Owen’s stepmother/ governess. It sounded more like the wicked stepmother of Snow White. 😂 Also the way he pronounced some words as Owen, like “issue” .. he added some “y” sound in “issue” and I have no idea why! 🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️ Anyhow, those are the small bumps. I still enjoyed this charming royal romance. 😌
3.75 And they lived happily ever after stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️🌟
This book is one of the most different in the series, in this book we know Keegan (brother of Jace, book 2) more intimately and basically everything in this book is worthy of a fairy tale!
Owen is our prince, yes a real prince, he is the prince of a very progressive nation that is trying to pass the first parliamentary law to legalize same-sex marriages. Since the initial vote count gave only a small chance of this law being passed Owen takes the challenge into his own hands.
Keegan never imagined having a false relationship, but it would certainly be worth it if it were to pass a law that would improve the lives of millions of people, right? So Owen manages to convince Keegan to enter into a false relationship with the hope that the law will be passed. What none of them expected was to have real feelings!
The book is very cute and enjoyable, the sex scenes seemed a little rushed but still hot.
Rating: 3.5 Stars. Steam: 6 out of 10. Triggers: Love Triangle: Cheating: HEA:
NOPE. Ok, I let this slide in other books by Devon McCormack, but enough already!
Devon, you don’t have to prove a character is also into women by having an ON PAGE bang session with some chick before he meets the guy he will want even more than the many ladies he has had before.
Tell me he is bi, in denial, gay for that one dude, or whatever and trust me, I will take your word for it. I already wasn’t that interested in reading this based on the blurb and Jace and Dax’s lackluster story, (Plus Jace also banged that girl on page in his first chapter.) but I gave it a shot.
Page 1 and I was done. PAGE 1.
I’m a woman, I don’t just read MM, I read MF stories as well, but for some reason I can’t help but cringe when there is an on page sex scene with a woman in an MM story. Although, really I just prefer no sex outside of the couple to be in their damn story, it’s unnecessary, and stop. Just stop.
3 stars!! 😁💕Liked it.. but did not love it. Keegan and Owen just did not seem like a believable couple despite the steam and sizzle. Plus I also thought that the author put in too many story-tropes.. massive age difference ✔, straight-to-gay/bi ✔, royal family-prince✔, fake-relationship✔, an effeminate kink ✔✔✔ It just felt overwhelming to have all the tropes of a typical M/M romance thrown in together to churn out this book. 🙄 Keegan (younger brother to Jace (Fever Falls #2)) is on a spring-break-type vacation in the royal (and fictional) country of Parlaisa with his friends when he bumps into Owen or Prince Owen Hawthorne III in a pub. Both of them suddenly find themselves caught in front of the press making out 😳💞and suddenly the "fake" relationship becomes a pivotal point for Owen to make a political statement in front of his brother (The King of Parlaisa) and the kingdom. Despite the fact that Owen has always considered himself straight, he finds himself attracted to Keegan not just physically but also mentally. Age difference aside, what helps them bond is the shared sorrow of losing a beloved family member early in their lives. They both also find that they cannot keep their hands off of each other😍🔥, but can love grow in such a short time? And what about their different lifestyles? Owen with his royal duties🤴🏻, always under the scrutiny of the press and Keegan with his college education still on-going? Can they find an HEA?🤔 Honestly speaking, the story doesn't really answer any in-depth questions.😬 Although the MCs get an HFN, I am not sure I believe in the strength of their relationship. 💔Sure, they have a lot of chemistry but will it be enough to hold them together in the long-term? I don't know...🤷♀️ This can be read as a standalone, but it'll be more enjoyable if you read it in order. I'm still very invested in the series and look forward to the next one, hopefully with one of the "Saturgays"👍😍
I liked this one but it wasn't my favourite in the series. Everything happened a wee bit too fast for me to buy into it fully although I did like both main characters.
Keegan was a real sweetie, with a heart of gold and while I totally believed that he'd fall for the super hot older man, I'm honestly not sure they had enough relatable life experience or things in common to make it a lifetime commitment.
Owen came across as an arse at first but, again, he had a lot of depth to his character and was hiding a much kinder and very affectionate nature behind his arrogance and outward appearance.
There're guest appearances by the rest of the Fever Falls crew and I really liked Owen's best mate/personal assistant Frederick (although again, his declaration of love/attraction came a bit out of left field).
Overall, the narrative of this one just felt a bit off throughout, the fake boyfriend trope is normally a fave of mine but here it didn't really last two minutes. Age gap romances are also a fave, but this one didn't actually feel like one because Keeg read older and Owen read younger.
For me, without the "Royal" element, this one would have worked far better. I'm afraid I just wasn't sold a narrative which made me believe a 19-year-old just newly out and living his gay life teenager would be the right match for a newly out and admitting his bisexuality 32-year-old Prince of a country where life's lived totally under a spotlight.
Still, I do love this series and am definitely waiting for the next entry.
You know, I’ve always been one of those people who was in love with Prince William and Harry. I mean, how could you not be? They’re hot as hell. BUT, you couldn’t pay me enough to put up with the bull they have to put up with every day. Not just their wives, but themselves. They have to act a certain way and be a certain way, the press and paps in their faces every dang second. It would make me want to hide in the bathroom for the rest of my life lol. For Keegan, he didn’t even know at first what he was getting into. He just wanted to take a cheap vacation somewhere with his friends. And they ended up in a small country a lot of people hadn’t heard of. When they got to dress the cosplay festival, they were having a ball like everyone else. Until Keegan laid eyes on someone who stole his breath. Owen, thinking he’s about to be outed for someone seeing his face, drags Keegan off to read him the riot act, only to realize, Keegan has no clue who he is. When they get back to the table of Keegan’s friends, a game is ensuing and it ends in Owen kissing the socks off Keegan. But from that point on, it becomes a whirlwind. First of lies, then of misunderstandings that has Keegan hurt, and it seems to keep steamrolling. But in the midst of the lies, comes the truth between the two of them. And into way more than either bargained for. And for Keegan, not necessarily a life he’s ready for. I’m not going to lie, when I read book 3, I was so not expecting this for Keegan. I figured he’d get with someone else from book 3, but when does Devon not surprise us. The more I read about Keegan in this story, though, the more I felt for him. Hell, I felt for the both of them. Being a prince is not all fairytales, and Keegan is tired of being treated like he’s fragile or a kid. Even if he is only 19. But more than that, both of the guys have had a hell of a past handed to them. It may have not always been dealt in the right way, but they’ve both come out of it stronger. Although, sometimes it doesn’t feel that way. The thing I loved about them, though, is they saw each other. They saw beyond the exteriors, and they got each other. They understood the others feelings in a lot of ways and they became friends in a way that no one else could be. Because no one else really got how they felt. It’s a good story. It definitely pulls on the heartstrings. And I tell you, with all the action going on with some of the other friends going on in this book, holy crap, I don’t know what to think. I hope they all get it together for the last book lol. There’s a lot of head scratching at the end of this one. It’s not a cliffhanger, per se, but there’s some stories going on there for sure. http://lovebytesreviews.com/
There were parts of this book I really liked, parts I really didn't like, and parts I just through were awkward or not well written. To start with the characters, I thought that Owen and Keegan had a pretty okay relationship and thought the build-up was pretty good. However, Some of the dialogue between them was not great in my opinion and it made me less invested in their relationship as a whole. Their physical relationship was only really present at the very end and while that's fine, the language used in these encounters just read weird to me. I thought their backstories were fine but I thought we never really dove deep enough. This is a longer romance books compared to what I read recently but it didn't feel any longer based on the backstory we got. I also wanted a few of the side characters to be fleshed out a bit more. I would say that there wasn't too much of a plot in this book. There are a few scenes discussing marriage equality in Owen's country and Keegan's birth family but most of the focus is on Owen and Keegan's relationship and their families. I think this is fine but in this case, the family drama wasn't interesting enough and the relationship wasn't interesting enough so I was left feeling bored at some parts. Some parts were definitely entertaining. I don't want it to seem like I hated it. I didn't, I rated it 3 stars. There were parts I thought were really cute. I was just left wanting a bit more. I think I would read more books by this author, just probably not in this series, unless a Casey and Steve book gets published, I'm very interested in their story. I've read all the other plot synopses and I'm not really interested in any of the other stories but who knows, maybe I'll change my mind some day.
I really liked this one when it started out. I liked Keegan in prior books so I was excited to read his. However, once I got into it, it started to fall flat for me.
I don't mind age-gap, but this one didn't work for me. Mainly because EVERYONE kept pointing it out, to include Owen when he would call Keegan a 'kid'. Ugh. It gets super frustrating. I mean most people find 18/19 year olds to be a little on the immature side already, but then to have it constantly pointed out in a book just grates a little.
But what really got me was the ending. Everything with Fredrick didn't make sense. Then the third-act breakup was ridiculous. Now we have the 32 year old acting immature. But then we don't really get an ending with these two. Is Keegan going to move? Because honestly that makes more sense since Owen is a prince for God's sake. But we have no clue because none of that is talked about.
Maybe we will find out in the next book. Would be nice.
I don’t know how to rate this but it wasn’t for me, I read it because I am really REALLY looking forward to Sawyer and Carter’s story! Keegan was cute but I am never a fan of Age Gap or The European Prince tropes so I knew right away that it wasn’t going to be a favourite. I want to know more about Steve and Casey though, now THAT’s my cup of tea
Ugh. I think Devon McCormack just ain't bringing it for me. I did not particularly enjoy the books he wrote with Riley Hart, but # Royal and # Burn were both total misses for me. The review for #Burn will follow at some point, but here are my issues with the fourth volume of the Fever Falls series that I actually enjoy overall. First of all, the book feels like a completely different universe has been forcefully thrust into the charming world of a small Georgian town, creating a jarring contrast to the other books. Secondly, the fictional country of Palaisia? (I did already forget the name because it is THAT interchangeable) is everything some Americans seem to think about Europe. Seriously. It ain't better than those Tiktoks. I swear. Also. Ehm. What an American seems to think about European royalty which makes it even worse. We are talking about a wild mixture of quirkiness, Croatian-ish names, a country that talks English and looks like a cross of Vegas, Little Italy, the black forest and Disneyland, and I kid you not, seems to have barely any security for their "royals" but has dungeons and a whole shady government that is basically non-existent as well as a lack of diplomacy or ehm ANYTHING. But sure. We have a dickass thirty-something TOTALLY down to earth, ex-coke-addict, straight prince and a dumbass, super bland American teenager with that madly fall in love - because hold your horses, we need a plot. Yadda, yadda, fake dating, yadda, yadda, not-really problems, yadda, yadda, prince without bodyguards basically moves to the Georgian small town because he fell in LOVE, hea. There. Now, you do not have to read 300 pages of stereotypes, platitudes and a lack of chemistry.
I’ve enjoyed every book in the Fever Falls series so far and this one is no exception. Keegan and his buddies go for a break to Europe to country called Parlaisa, and one night, unbeknownst to Keegan, he ends up sharing a hot kiss with none other than a member of the Parlaisa royal family; Prince Owen Hawthorne III. What follows is a request from the Prince for them to enter into a fake relationship, and this is where the fun begins. I really enjoyed Keeg and Owen’s journey, watching them navigate the differences in their standing and experience, Keeg is 19 and Owen is 32 but he’s never been physical with a guy before. These two just fit and brought out the best in each and this made the story a really hot and fun read. It was great to meet some familiar faces from Fever Falls and this book certainly had the camaraderie and brotherhood that’s been so evident in the series up to now, and I think this is such great thread to run through the series; this almost magical place of Fever Falls, it’s so accepting and fun and we all know it’s home to some of the most hottest guys!
This is a fun, wish fulfillment kind of romance. It’s sweet, but I feel like it was a missed opportunity for Keegan’s story.
As a 19-year-old man trying to figure out his sexuality, Keegan‘s story would have been more true to the character if it focused on first love with someone closer to his age - a REAL relationship, not a fairy tale. The prince/fake boyfriend trope would have worked for anyone in Fever Falls, but Keegan had much more potential than that. How many readers would have seen themselves in Keegan if that was his story? It’s too bad we’ll never know.
I so wanted to like this book. I really, really wanted to like this book. The first and third in this series are perfection. 👌🏻 Unfortunately this fell short in so many ways for me.
The world building with this “royal family” felt slapped together and incomplete. The characters, for me, felt painfully immature in their interactions. Nothing about this story gained my emotional or mental investment.
This book was a pleasant surprise, but I guess I should have expected that from Keegan. Royal romances are one of my weaknesses and this salacious read had everything from the fake-relationships, to blush-worthy banter and endless character growth. I think I fall a little more in love with Fever Falls with each book in the series.
The story starts off extremely raunchy, like Devon McCormack doesn't even easy you in, he just drops you off in the middle to fend for yourself. Which initially, is a little off putting. But once you get past that and get to know the characters better, its clear there is a lot going on. Complex family dynamics, numerous secrets, and a fake-relationship provide endless drama to carry the story.
As a couple, I liked Keegan and Owen. Keegan really grew into his confidence and self over the course of the story. Owen was sort of all over the place emotionally. He was hot and cold, and there were several moments where he was an alpha-hole. At one point in the story, there is a disagreement and Keegan was the one to chase after Owen...when it should have been Owen begging for forgiveness since he was one who start the argument and said hurtful things. So while their banter and sexual chemistry was top notch, there were moments when the relationship needed a better balance.
The secondary characters in Fever Falls had me endlessly grinning. By the conclusion of the story, I was looking up to see if Keegan's best friends, Steve and Casey, had a book because there chemistry was undeniable. But I really didn't like Owen's brother, Lucas. And while a decent portion of the story centered around this broken relationship....even when things seem to be mending, it felt like he was still against Owen being with Keegan. While Lucas kept verbally saying how supportive he was, his actions and behavior didn't feel all that supportive.
In addition, there were a few little plot twists that seemed to be thrown in and literally came out of no where that I felt were unnecessary. As there was already so much going on, these twists really took away from the Keegan and Owen dynamic. Overall, it wasn't a bad story but not one that I would probably pick up again.
FEVER FALLS is an AMAZING series that can be read as standalones, you can jump in anywhere at anytime. Book #4 is in the creative hands of DEVON MCCORMACK. Small town college student Keegan gets to go on vacation and let his hair down. Together with his best friends, they think this cheap trip to a small, obscure kingdom will be all fun in the clubs. Keegan, will begin a journey of a lifetime. Prince Owen will never be King and that suits him just fine. The playboy of this kingdom, just wants to dodge scandal and have some fun. But scandal apparently is his middle name, much to his family shame. Once Keegan and Owen lock eyes, the scandal fuse is lit. Owen doesn't realize, this will be the scandal of a lifetime. I loved these characters. Keegan and Owen, smirked and teased their way into my heart. This was a fun time, even though the story had some serious subjects. The friends, family and love in Fever Falls make it a place you wish you could visit. This series, is a BRILLIANT idea created by DEVON MCCORMACK and RILEY HART. Take one trip there with either author and you will be ready to buy a house there. I don't know who I'm going back with next but I can't wait to get there. I HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK AND THIS BRILLIANT SERIES!!!!!
Ehhhhhhh, I'm sorry. This could have been better and I was really close to DNFing it in the beginning because of how little the characters seemed to care about things that should have left them reeling. Owen doesn't care that suddenly he's attracted to a guy. Hell, we find out later on that he's ALWAYS been attracted to guys, he just ignored it? I guess? I don't know, it was kind of a throwaway line. And Keegan doesn't care that he's caught the attention of a prince. Like seriously, doesn't even blink twice, not much of a reaction when he finds out. And it was hard to take the royal aspect of the story seriously when it was all so obviously made up with names like Lucas and Owen and just over the top snobby behavior. BUT, the story did pick up and I found myself enjoying the second half better. I didn't see the point in Owen and Keegan making that "emergencies only" pact when it was literally abandoned like 2 chapters later; I think that could have been drawn out a little more so they could ponder their feelings a little more but that's just me. Overall, I feel like this could have been anyone's story, I'm not sure why it was Keegan's but oh well.
The fourth book in the Fever Falls series is different in that a portion of it occurs outside Fever Falls. However, this was a necessary literary choice for plot development. Don’t worry we still get to see Ash and Beau, Dax and Jace, Lincoln and Rush and the rest of the Saturgays crew.
This book felt less familiar. I suspect that had to do with the Royalty aspect; not exactly something I encounter in my everyday life....or ever. The underlying fight for marriage equality in the fictional country created good reflection points.
Keegan introduces a little kink to shake things up and Owen’s reaction to that is great, leading to many hot encounters.
Struggles in family dynamics add realism; Nance and Sabrina continue to evolve their relationship with often humorous results; and Fever Falls remains the idyllic town you wish you’d grown up in.
Looking forward to the fifth novel in the series and hoping the authors continue to decide to expand the series.
