Bobcats Before Breakfast is the firsthand account of a twentieth century naturalist, guide, hunter, trapper, woodsman who spent more than forty years living with and off the land. With grit and zeal this self-taught naturalist gathered knowledge about how animals live and shared his findings leading hikes and survival classes at the Harris Center for Conservation Education in Hancock, NH. Kulish's daily routine was to rise before dawn, get out into the woods, and track, observe, and record his findings on deer, otters, beaver, wildcats--all before breakfast. "I'm still not sure whether I learned to understand people because they are so much like wild animals, or wild animals because they are so much like people," wrote Kulish.
Enjoyed this book of reminiscences/stories from a time when making a living hunting & trapping was still possible. Emphasis is on the lessons learned from a life lived in the woods.
Bobcats BEFORE breakfast, not Bobcats FOR Breakfast…. Now that we got that out of the way…
John W. Kulish lived a life many of us wish we could live. Those of us wishing on that life forget how tough the life he lived was. When most modern folks venture into nature they get to choose nice weather or maybe have rented a nice cabin or at the least they have a modern vehicle that warms up quickly to remove the chill of cold. John didn’t have these options most of the time, John was busy chasing down the critter of the week that paid the most and he couldn’t give up no matter the weather until he had that critters hide. Bear in mind John was out doing all this in New Hampshire during the early to mid 20th century. New England has some terribly frightful weather, in case you weren’t savvy.
John is going to enlighten you to the ways of beaver, otters, deer, hunting hounds and of course bobcats. Doubtful you’ll ever use any of this knowledge, but this book is a fine read that makes me wish I’d been born a century before I was so I could have lived that wild life. Bobcats Before Breakfast is another quality read that is nonfiction that reads better than fiction. If you’re interested in the trapping lifestyle and want an easy read, give Bobcats Before Breakfast a go.
